Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by babniyen(m): 2:53pm On Jul 07, 2018
Forgot its a 150 L freezer..
I have a 200ah battery, 290w solar panel and a generic pwm cc.
ceaser:

Thank you sir. 75 watts at 12 volt is an impressive performance. Please what is the freezer capacity, product name/model, solar accessories that you use with it (panels and battery) and where you sourced the freezer from? May consider using your source since it's a tested an trusted one.

Thank you.
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by babniyen(m): 3:49am On Jul 07, 2018
I will answer the solar freezer part. I have been using a solar freezer since January and I can tell you it works very well. I hardly have power in my area and it has saved me. It is rated 75W @ 12V. [qquote author=ceaser post=69123627]

A little help here sirs. A friend with the same types of gadgets as mine covets my own type of solar set up.

Set up 1.
*A 42" Startimes LED (70 watts with a wattmeter)
*12 volt 100 watts deep cycle battery (can't recall the name and specs and I'm far from home at the moment)
*20A PWM charger
*1000 watts pure sine wave inverter with 10A in-built charger.
*2 x 150 watts 12 volts panels in parallel config.

Set up 2 in another section of the house.
*12 volt 100 watts deep cycle battery (same product as above)
*2 x 150 watts 12 volts panels in parallel config.
*100 watts modified sine wave inverter.
*10A external battery charger.
*A 32" LG LCD TV with 100 watts at full power; 48 watts consumption at power saving mode as shown on the inverter itself.
*A dstv decoder.

Both set up are 12volt system. I prefer 12volt system cos of less battery headaches associated with it. I spend few hours at home almost everyday and the systems get fully sunlight-charged when I get home. Set up 1 can run 4 hours before I retire to bed at 70% DoD. Set up 2 runs a lot better and can go for 8hrs.

Both set-ups DIYed about the same time, have served well for 10 months, no noticeable hitches so far.

In my friend's case, He is around his home all weekends and will have no less than 11 hours of use (including sun hours) on weekdays.

My questions:
*With 12 volt system, can he go for 24 volt solar panels and have it successfully power his 12 volt? (I assume this will result in faster charging because of his own sun-hours simultaneous use?
*He may have to go for 200ah batteries as opposed to my 100ah. What size of 24volt panels would you recommend and in what config?
*Does he necessarily have to go for MPPT or he can stick with PWM like I do and still get satisfactory power supply that suits his needs?
*If MPPT, what specs would you recommend?

Thank you.

Here's an inquiry for my own use: Who has had experience with solar deep freezers? Though more expensive, how reliable and how convenient or efficient is the use above conventional deep freezer-inverter-solar panel combi?
Would you recommend the former above the latter?

Thank you once again. AC[/quote]

Politics / Re: We Increased Train Fare Because Rich People Use It More Than The Poor – Amaechi by babniyen(m): 7:43am On Apr 06, 2018
If this is true. It is the silliest argument in the world for a price increase. It's obviouse that no feasibility study was done before embarking on the project, therefore appropriate pricing was never mentioned. No ROI. This is a FGN project. SMH...
Reportmusic:

Rotimi Amaechi, minister for transportation, says the train fares between Kaduna and Abuja was increased because majority of those using the service are rich.

Speaking on Thursday at the 3rd edition of the Kaduna Investment Summit, Amaechi said the intention of the president towards the railway was to transport poor people.

“Some of you have been asking why we increased the fare between Kaduna and Abuja,” he said during his address at the summit.

“For each locomotive, we spend N56 million, when we were charging you N600, we were getting N16 million so all you rich men, we were dashing you N40 million per month. Actually, very few poor men use those trains. The actual intent of the president is to allow us to move poor people from Kaduna to Abuja. If you go to Rigasa, you will see the big men pack their cars and use the railway and chase away the poor people.

“So since it’s big men that use the railway, we jerked up the prices. You know what it’s called — appropriate pricing. So we price according to your pocket but it does not affect our subsidy, we still subsidise the railway.”

The minister encouraged people to continue making government accountable saying he is the first to know when locomotives are faulty.

“The funny thing about the social media is that anytime there is a problem with the railway, the first person to know is me,” he said.

“I see all sorts of videos and I wonder if they realise that I am the minister for transport not the managing director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation so I can’t run the railways.

“In the past, none of you can send a video to a minister but now you not only send, they direct me on what to do. I urge you to continue in that light and make us accountable to you.”

Complete reply in a small package. Bravo.
NiyiOmoIyunade:
Your solar panels are basically a charge/power source. Because you have a 48v nominal battery system you can expect to see your batteries needing Absorb voltages in the range of 56.4v to 59.2v depending on battery chemistry.

Deriving from above, in order to charge your batteries properly/completely, your solar panels must generate at least that Absorb voltage plus a 7v to 10v margin minimum (this is a rule of thumb) added on top to allow for losses in the cabling, vagaries in PV panels power and voltage output e.t.c.

If we take the battery upper charge limit of 59.2v and add on 10v safety margin we are at 69.2volts or roughly 70volts as minimum solar voltage. Tieing this into another popular rule of thumb that says each 12v battery requires minimum 17.5volts (or 18volts) in solar panel voltage to charge properly, we establish that your 48v (4 pieces 12v batteries in series) batteries need at least 17.5v × 4 = 70volts in solar panel voltage to charge properly.

So in your case that has panels with VoC of 38.8v, one could infer VmP of around 30volts to 35volts max. You would need at least two panels in series to have any hope of charging your batteries at all.

What is right for your setup will now depend on your type of Charge Controller - with a PWM CC 2 panels in series is all you need but with an MPPT CC you may want to gain more voltage headroom to maximise the MPPT boost factor and hence do 3 panels in series. All these are subject to your specific CCs operating and voltage limits of course.

Once your inverter nominal voltage is fixed at 48v then everything else derives from there. Whether to use a 2 panel in series or 3 panel in series config would depend on your panel VmP and Charge Controller type/limits/preferences.

I hope this clarifies? If you revert with the actual VmP of your panels then we should be able to offer you more definitive advise.

Hello, Mr Bigrovar posted extensively about FLA charge current settings which works for him .. You can also view snapshot below for charge voltage settings if you are on L16

Note: the lower you set your charge current , the longer the charging time for fla & gel spec ! AGM specs prefer higher charge current .. Cheer's

Thank you. I will confirm tomorrow.

NiyiOmoIyunade:
Good day Sir. You have to tell us the battery nominal voltage and AH (amp-hour) capacity so that we can advise properly.

Because you said Trojan L16, one could lean forward and say it is Trojan L16 6v 400AH in which case in series you have a 24v 400AH bank.

You could set the inverter to charge between 40amps and 50amps for a start and that should be OK.

More importantly be sure to configure the correct Absorb and Float voltage setpoints for your battery type - an inverter with an adjustable charge amps setting would most likely have customizable battery type selection as well.
