Crime / Re: My Husband Raped Me. by babtoundey(m): 12:51pm On Sep 15, 2022
Moh247:

rape, unlawful sexual activity, most often involving sexual intercourse

Good luck proving it in a Law court that your Legally married Husband with right to Conjugal rights had "unlawful" sex with you

This your definition of rape get as he be. There are many "unlawful sexual intercourse" that cannot in anyway be regarded as rape. So, you got it wrong right from your understanding of the word "rape".
Rape is a non-consensual intercourse. So, ot doesn't matter whether you have the legal right to the person's body or not. As long as you force, coerce, threaten or intimidated the person to have sex with you through whatever means, then you have raped the person.

So,you can actually rape your wife.
While an agreement between a married man and a prostitute to make out can unlawful but still has nothing to do with rape.

As for me, I wish to rest at home. Even if i die inside mars or venus, take me back to where i belong.

They share some words with Yoruba. Sometimes the meaning will be the same, most time, it's the exact opposite

I want to believe the very stool their king/queen sits on was stolen from somewhere.

See how they elevated theirs and denigrate ours. They can have an all powerful queen who is superior to an elected representative but when a similar trace of such practice is seen in Africa, it becomes barbaric, crude, uncivilized.

Thunder fire the white man for colonozing Africa, Thunder fire some African ancestors for aiding and abetting them.

Politics / Re: Obasanjo Teaches His Grandson How To Properly Prostrate While Greeting (Video) by babtoundey(m): 5:33pm On Aug 10, 2022
Amalekki:

Why are you always pulling conclusions out of nowhere in your comments?
Isn't it ignorance to even appropriate 'evolve' with 'abolish'? Some people started something at a point in time (culture), are you saying that some people who were never signatories to that practice have no right to question it and refuse to follow it at another point in time? grin

Btw, America is a nation of natives and immigrants and whether you are originally from Britain, Korea, Vietnam, Germany, Brazil, Nigeria or Japan, when you become an American, you are an American. The rest is in your mind - you could be America's equivalent of Hausa/Fulani, Igbo, Yoruba majorities or you could be one of hundreds of minorities like we also have in Nigeria cool

I have pointed it out already. We, as a people, don't have to always judge our mental stability, smartness and near perfection by blindly accepting foreign norms. It's not until we Americanize ourselves before we can adjudge ourselves informed human. It's not everything African/Nigerian (cultural wise) that should be made to give way to a new way in the guise of questioning or modification.

Certain cultural practices are not good enough and deserve to be ditched outright. But to make informed judgement, you don't just pick everything belonging to a group and tag it inferior stock. Prostrating once again connotes no negative meaning.
Politics / Re: Obasanjo Teaches His Grandson How To Properly Prostrate While Greeting (Video) by babtoundey(m): 4:41pm On Aug 10, 2022
Amalekki:

Let's keep playing the ostrich. For your information, "is it me you are greeting like that" is a very common statement among the 'preservers' of this dobale culture. The fact is already speaking for itself in terms of sustainability. Again, look closely around you especially when you are outside of your influence zone. Wake up and smell the coffee, 17th, 18th, 19th century are gone forever.

*And why this fixation with America? grin
You definitely would be shocked at how much a typical American respect you and your personal space compared with a typical Nigerian. Culture evolves, like it or not! cool

I don't understand the "is it me you're greetings like that..". If you are not born into a particular culture, upholding its nuances is not your obligation. No Yoruba person will feel offended if a non-Yoruba person greets him without prostrating. You can't be expected to uphold what you don't understand. He will feel offended only when you leave your comfort zone, and disparage a practice you have little knowledge or understanding about. That's the time he will put you where you belong.

Once again, no culture is absolutely wrong or right, positive or negative. Culture "evolves" should not be used to mean that everything that is identifiable with a particular people should be tagged unprogressive or disagreeable. If a culture practice is positive, it takes ignorance and sheer stupidity to abolish it. And if it's otherwise it's still stupidity topreserving it. The practice in question is not hostile. It propagates positive value, why then do we have any talk about it fizzling away?

American can be respectable if their culture permits them to be. As long as you are African, you can't run away from your identity. You can only try to be American. You can never be.
Politics / Re: Obasanjo Teaches His Grandson How To Properly Prostrate While Greeting (Video) by babtoundey(m): 3:41pm On Aug 10, 2022
Amalekki:

As long as it's voluntary preservation of your culture then that's fine. If someone is fine with prostrating let them do so voluntarily not threaten, demand or coerce them to submit to the practice. That won't last, look around you.

Why is it now culture? If you're not proud to teach your children your language, your esteemed ways and values? Nobody forces anybody to prostrate or take to certain cultural ways. As long as you're born into a cultured family, as long as you're raised by cultured parents, you don't need to be told what to do and how to do it. You grow into it. You do it unconsciously.
A child that stretches his hand to shake his father or disrespects his/her mother age mate will bring dishonour to the parents that raise him. Once you are born into a particular society, you are expected to act in line with the people accepted norms and conventions.

Nobody forces a worker to resume to work at the appropriate time and get do his job. You can't run away from who you are. If you are born and raised Nigeria you cannot be American overnight.

Amalekki:

All redundant culture including the ones you mentioned should evolve without interference. Mr Babs, your grandfather probably had tribal marks, you already evolved culturally in that sense by not having tribal marks, and if you do, I can bet your kids are not likely to have tribal marks. Mind you, I personally see nothing wrong in it, I'm just emphasizing cultural evolution in our customs and our tradition.

When your grandfather was alive, he most likely lived in the same compound family house with his parents, his siblings, his cousins, his uncles etc till old age. Now we operate nuclear families with just you and your own immediate family.

A friend told me that his family were the ones with the traditional role of feeding the king's horses. They don't do it anymore yet they have several proverbs and sayings about the sanctity of his family's role as the custodians of the king's horses. Culture evolves.

In the past, you could only see kings like the Alaafin and Ooni just one or two times in a year. Today, people dance buga with them on weekends.

Your first statement settles it. There is nothing unwelcoming about prostrating. Not all cultural practices should be subjected to modifications or outright eradication. There are cultural traits that denigrate human dignity and there are some that elevate it. We cannot lump everything together and file them for abolition just because we have been exposed to modernity or on grounds of cultural evolution.

The present has a lot to learn from the past. No culture is absolutely bad or good. Prostration is not a negative value and should not be lumped together with extortionate bride price or "redundant" cultural practices.
Politics / Re: Obasanjo Teaches His Grandson How To Properly Prostrate While Greeting (Video) by babtoundey(m): 6:19pm On Aug 09, 2022
Amalekki:
Nice but we should always keep in mind that culture evolves. Even Obasanjo can't tell how this particular aspect of culture started and who started it.

"Culture is a snapshot of the nuances of one group, however small or large, at a point in time. This would include all aspects of culture. The Cambridge English Dictionary defines culture to be 'the way of life, especially in general customs and beliefs, of a particular group of people at a particular time.' Due to this trait, it is very fluid and dynamic. Cultures typically experience a lot of change over time, some happen quickly and others slowly. There have been 29 different, identified ways in which cultural change can be induced, including things like innovation, growth, modernization, industry, science, and revolution."

Culture evolves... The harmless culture of prostrating should fizzle away while that culture of exorbitant bride price, marginalizing a girl child in family setting, the family of the wife claiming the child of the man that couldn't pay his wife bride price should wax stronger. Teacher, don't teach me nonsense.

In the words of Wole Soyinka,"If I only kneel to God why should I prostrate to you?"

You bow or kneel to God to accord him respect and honour. The same way, your elders, father, mother and community leaders deserve some respects and honour from you. God creates the world, but he doesn't make everyone equal. Some are higher than you by virtue of their age, some by virtue of wisdom and some by virtue of their office. As long as the person is not your equal, as long as the person deserves to be honored, Yoruba culture mandates you to honour him.
