Nairaland GeneralNigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab Arraigned On New Us Charges by babytejiri(op): 12:47pm On Dec 17, 2010
The man accused of trying to blow up a U.S. airliner with a bomb hidden in his underwear last Christmas, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was arraigned on Thursday on new charges related to the plot.A federal grand jury on Wednesday indicted Abdulmutallab on two new charges: conspiracy and possession of an explosive device for a terrorism plot. He now faces eight charges and if convicted, potentially a sentence of life in prison. He declined to enter a plea on the new charges during the 14-minute hearing, and Judge Nancy Edmunds entered a “not guilty” plea for him, according to prosecutors and a court official.Edmunds said she would set a trial date at a January 12 hearing.

On a flight to Detroit from Amsterdam, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, originally from Nigeria, tried to ignite explosives packed in his underwear. The bomb failed to fully detonate and he was subdued by passengers and the crew aboard the Northwest Airlines jumbo jet.

Abdulmutallab, who fired his court-appointed lawyers in September, told U.S. investigators earlier this year that he had received the bomb and training from al Qaeda militants in Yemen, U.S. officials have said.

Edmunds appointed him a standby lawyer to help as needed and Abdulmutallab reaffirmed on Thursday that he wanted to represent himself with the assistance of the standby attorney. Wednesday’s indictment said there was evidence Abdulmutallab had traveled to Yemen in August 2009 to become involved in a “violent ‘jihad’ on behalf of al Qaeda.” After the attempted attack, the Obama administration scrambled to strengthen U.S. airline security by deploying full-body scanners to try to detect explosives that could be hidden in a passenger’s clothing.

PoliticsJonathan Warns Ibb, Atiku Over Inciting Statements by babytejiri(op): 12:20pm On Dec 17, 2010
President Goodluck Jonathan has sounded a note of warning to those making inciting statements, challenging Nigeria’s sovereignty as a nation and warned his government would no longer “take that kind of rubbish lightly.” [More, ] The president, who was speaking at the decoration ceremony of some newly promoted Nigerian Navy and Air Force Admirals and Air Vice Marshals yesterday in Abuja, said those who made such incendiary utterances were always the first to take their families abroad to stay until other people’s children and families suffered and died as a result of their mischief.

He was apparently reacting to perceived inciting statements by former president Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) and former vice president and presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku had, while speaking at the National Stakeholders Conference organised by the Adamu Ciroma-led Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF) in Abuja, on Wednesday, warned the Federal Government on the likelihood of violence in next year’s election, saying, “those who make peaceful change impossible, make violent change inevitable.”

President Jonathan warned: “We will no longer allow that kind of culture. I will not allow anybody to take the country for a ride. And sometimes, I frown at some people making statements, especially those of us who are politicians making statements, challenging the sovereignty of this nation.

“Nigerian Government will no longer take that kind of rubbish lightly. Because when we have crisis, we lose army officers, police officers and some of us who are the cause of the trouble are the people flying to the United States to go and stay until other peoples’ children will die, other people’s wives will suffer then they come back to be our leaders. We will no longer allow that kind of culture. I will not allow anybody to take the country for a ride.”

President Jonathan, while decrying inciting utterances by some politicians in recent times, said Nigeria was bigger than any individual. He called on those guilty of such inciting statements to focus on how to move the country forward and not toe the path of destruction. The president commended the role played by the Nigerian military to keep the nation one, saying but for the role played by the Nigerian Armed Forces in international peace support operations all over the world, Nigeria would not have been recognised as the giant of Africa.

He said the country, more than ever before, was ready to take her rightful place in the African sub-region, adding that the whole world was looking up to Nigeria to settle the political situation in Cote d’ Ivoire. “We have to thank the military for keeping the country together. You have shown leadership in the whole of Africa.

As for what is happening in Cote d’ Ivoire everyday, presidents all over the world are calling on me because they feel it is only Nigeria that can solve the problem of that country. That tells you how others rate Nigeria and we have no reason to derail. “I have to commend the military for doing that. We have that standing role in the society because of the role the military is playing.”

The president, who personally decorated the first female rear admiral in the Nigerian Navy with her new rank, said his administration was conferring with the leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces to commence the admission of women into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) to be trained as regular combatant officers.

Nairaland GeneralThree Nigerians In Uk Jail Over College Visa Scam by babytejiri(op): 1:30pm On Dec 15, 2010
Three Nigerians were yesterday jailed for a total of 18-and-a-half years for setting up a fake educational institution, called Bogus Colleges, to help illegal immigrants remain in the United Kingdom (UK). The UK Border Agency’s London Immigration Crime Team, told the prosecution that its investigations revealed the dirty deals of the three, which include a husband and wife, Tiamiyu and Christiana Bello, aged 75 and 67 respectively, and a 39-year-old solicitor, Adeyinka Adeniran.

The couple were arrested following a raid on a property on New Cross Road in South London in July 2007, while Mr. Adeniran was later arrested following a search of his office on Old Kent Road. The sentence yesterday followed an 11-week trial at Croydon Crown Court, where the Bellos were found guilty of conspiring to assist unlawful immigration and conspiracy to possess articles for use in fraud. They were both sentenced to five years in prison each. Mr. Adeniran was also found guilty of conspiring to assist unlawful immigration, which the judge described as a “disgrace to his profession.” He was sentenced to eight and a half years behind bars.

Revelations

The UK Border’s Agency said its raid on Mr. And Mrs. Bello’s office, which was registered to the address of “Academic College of Education” and the “Academic College of Training and Recruitment”, institutions for which the Bellos were the principals, led to the seizures of documents.

“During a search, a large number of documents were seized, including letters purporting to be from the Academic College of Education and counterfeit qualification certificates. Many of the files seized from that address contained documentation from the Bellos’ college. Officers soon discovered that the building was a collection of bedsits and there was no evidence of lessons being taught there,” the agency said.

UK officers told the court that though the scam had been on for many years, the entirety of the business structure totally, “involved the supply of fake qualification documents which were then used to support visa applications to the Home Office. Many applicants were then represented by Mr. Adeniran through his legal practice.”

Chris Foster, who leads the London Immigration Crime Team for the UK Border Agency, described the structure as “a sophisticated criminal enterprise, which had the explicit aim of helping those who had no right to be in the UK evade immigration controls. As this case shows, illegal immigration can be big business. I hope this sends out a message that we are committed to tackling the criminal groups behind it, putting the ringleaders before the courts, and, ultimately, behind bars.”

Nairaland GeneralWorkers Shut Down Union Bank Nigeria by babytejiri(op): 1:12pm On Dec 15, 2010
It was a day of mixed business operations for Union Bank. While its 41st annual general meeting was on at Maiduguri, Borno State capital, protesting staff shut down the bank’s operations nationwide. The workers said they have had enough of the mismanagement of the present management staff, and in particular, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Funke Osibodu. They are also complained about the alleged termination of 200 staff without due process. “Enough is enough,” said one of the protesters, who did not wish to be named. “What is it? Since she came, we have not known peace. She has been undermining workers solidarity and constantly deducting workers salary for no specific reason. We need answers to her actions so far. We need her to clarify certain thing we don’t understand. All the tax that are being deducted from our salaries, there is no evidence that they are being remitted to the tax office. She is looting our money. They were told to come here and raise our share capital base. Nothing has happened so far. It’s not really the layoff that is our problem now.”

Inquiries revealed that all the branches of the bank nationwide were affected by the protest as the central server which is supposed to link up the systems for the online services were shut down as well. The protest is one of the fallouts of the restructuring of the rescued banks by the Central Bank which commenced last year with the takeover of nine banks.

Protest would continue

Denja Yakub, the Assistant secretary Nigeria Labour Congress, said the protest “would continue forever.” “We have succeeded in shutting down all Union Bank branches nationwide,” he said. “They didn’t work anywhere today and we will continue tomorrow. It will continue forever until they decide to talk with us.” Mr Yakub alleged that the bank management has ignored implementation of all collective agreements it signed with the union, misappropriated shareholders’ funds, and sacked over 200 workers without due process.

Among the placards and hand bills held by the protesting workers were inscriptions like ‘Madam Osibodu, stop undermining workers’ solidarity’. ‘Know that working men have no country’. ‘While the wages of workers is under assault, the directors’ income is witnessing an upward swing’. ‘Osibodu, why are you moving deposit to our competitors? Tell the world why you ceded our US$500 million deposit to First Bank of Nigeria’. ‘Madam Osibodu, you represent the Jezebel of our time. We bind you, don’t disturb’.

However, while her house was literarily on fire, Mrs Osibodu was assuring shareholders that better days are ahead as a result of the changes being implemented in the bank. “We are confident that the changes being implemented in the bank will yield the desired results such that they will begin to reap good returns from their investments in the bank in the near future,” she said.

Francis Barde, the bank’s spokesperson, said he was unable to comment on the picketing and promised to call back; which he did not do as at the time of going to the press.

PoliticsNigerian Government Budgets N4.2tr For 2011 by babytejiri(op): 1:05pm On Dec 15, 2010
The federal government has proposed a budget of N4.2 trillion for the 2011 financial year, with a crude oil benchmark pegged at $62 per barrel.

Capital expenditure is expected to take N1 trillion while the remaining N3.2 trillion will be gulped by recurrent expenditure.

It was confirmed that contrary to earlier reports, the federal government intends to commence a cut in the recurrent expenditure starting from the 2012 financial year. The Presidency was however still tinkering with the budget proposal ahead of its presentation to the joint session of the national assembly today.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives, on Tuesday, approved a request by President Goodluck Jonathan to extend the lifespan of the 2010 budget to March 31, 2011.

Mr Jonathan had made the request to the National Assembly two weeks ago, following the row between the House and the Executive arm over the poor implementation of the capital component of the budget.

The House had threatened not to consider the 2011 Appropriation Bill until it was satisfied with the implementation of the capital profile of the budget. It however, rescinded the decision last week after the president’s letter.

Cutting the work force

It was learnt that the government can only cut recurrent expediture if things can be reviewed, like the downsizing of the workforce in the ministries, department and agencies (MDAs) of government; and the merging of ministries, and parastatals.

Available information also revealed that the government is looking at the prospect of voluntary retirement and payoff for civil servants who are willing to leave the service.

“All these are cost saving measures but they are things that cannot be done overnight. It is not a six months thing. The government will have to do this gradually and over time,” a top Presidency official said yesterday in an interview.

The ministry of finance, as part of steps towards the auditing of staff of the civil service and MDAs had already spent over N12 billion in building a database of staff in 16 MDAs with a view to cover all the MDAs and parastatals of government by the end of the 2011 financial year.

“This processes require time,” the source said adding that “people who will be laid off will have to be paid or provided alternative jobs. It has to be planned carefully in order for it not to have a back lash effect,” the source said.

It was however gathered that the disproportionate budgeting pattern had been a subject of concern to the Minister of Finance Olusegun Aganga, hence the setting up of a committee in September to review the expenditure pattern and advise government appropriately.

The committee, as at the time of finalising the 2011 budget proposal, was yet to turn in its report.

PoliticsNigeria Military Kills Abia State Kidnap Kingpin (osisikankwu) by babytejiri(op): 11:33am On Dec 13, 2010
The suspected leader of kidnap gangs in Abia State, Obioma Nwankwo, popularly known as Osisikankwu, was yesterday killed by the military task force deployed to the state by the federal government. The news of his killing led to wild jubilation among residents of Aba and Umuahia. His death marked another success in the efforts of the military task force to rid the state of gangs that have made life difficult for the people of the state and almost destroyed social and economic activities in the area. Deputy army public relations officer and spokesperson of the task force, Sagir Musa, confirmed the death of Mr. Nwankwo yesterday. He said the alleged kidnapper was shot dead at Obokwe market, in Ukwa West Local Government Council, by a joint police and military patrol team.

A broken myth

Mr. Musa said that the military had laid an ambush for the kidnapper for some days after they learnt of his presence in the bush near the market. The kidnapper’s killing brought to an end a myth surrounding him in Aba that the man could neither be caught nor killed. The commissioner of police in Abia State, Jonathan Johnson, also told NEXT that the body of the gang leader will be displayed to reassure residents of the state that he was truly dead.

Another source said the task force got closer to Mr Nwankwo two days ago when his accomplice who used to supply him arms was arrested. After his arrest, arms including two GPMGs, three RPG bombers, 20 pieces of RPG bombs, 93 empty magazines of AK47 guns, 150 litre keg filled with live ammunition and eight pieces of AK47 guns, were recovered from the accomplice. Mr. Musa said last night that the body of the notorious kidnapper had been taken to Umuahia to be shown to government officials and would be publicly paraded today in the city. Hundreds of people trooped to the military barracks in Aba last night waiting to see the body, but they left disappointed when the body was not presented. Mr Nwankwo, who was arrested a few months ago, was inexplicably released by the police and since then, had tormented the people, who ascribed daredevil abilities to him. Mr Musa described Osisikankwu’s killing as a landmark achievement of the military operations in the state and promised that the task force will not relent until it flushes out the remaining kidnappers in the area.

State of anarchy

Kidnapping in Abia State reached new heights on July 11th when four journalists and their driver were kidnapped on their way from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, after attending the National Executive Council meeting of the Nigeria Union of Journalists. Among the journalists was Wahab Alabi Oba, the chairman of the Lagos State Council of the NUJ. The Senate president, David Mark, subsequently demanded that a state of emergency be declared in the state. He also advocated the application of ‘jungle solution’ to the rising level of kidnappings and armed robbery to serve as a deterrent to others, saying the rule of law could not be applied in a jungle situation. Senior officials of the International Police Organisation (INTERPOL) were invited by the federal government to help track down the kidnappers. The journalists were later released although an initial ransom demand of N250 million was not paid.

A few days before the nation’s 50th independence anniversary, gunmen seized 15 primary school children on their way to school. The abductors had contacted the owner of the private school and demanded a N20 million ransom before the children could be released. However, the students were set free on the day of the nation’s independence anniversary. Mr. Nwankwo’s gang was reportedly responsible for the kidnappings.

Career1,500 Nigerians Lose Jobs In Julius Berger Abuja by babytejiri(op): 10:19am On Dec 10, 2010
Construction giant, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc. has in the last one month retrenched 1,500 workers in Abuja.

Investigations by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) revealed that those affected were the aged, the unfit and those due for retirement. The purge which affected all its branches was necessitated by the delay in releasing payments to the company by the government for jobs already executed. Spokesperson for the company, Clement Iloba, told NAN that the affected workers were not sent to the labour market just like that, they were paid all their retirement benefits and or entitlements at the point of receiving their disengagement letters so that they can fend for themselves by establishing personal businesses. He also stressed that in any case, those affected were already at the point of leaving the company, a condition he added was very rare as lots of money were spent on training them on the job.

PoliticsSoldiers Caused Blackout, Say Phcn Workers by babytejiri(op): 7:05pm On Nov 12, 2010
Workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) have said the presence of armed military personnel at its installations is responsible for the current power outages being experienced in some parts of the country even as the trade unions had called off their warning strike.

Speaking under the umbrella of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) yesterday, the workers explained that the continued occupation by military personnel deployed by the Federal Government in PHCN installations was counter productive and affecting the psyche of workers who were being intimidated and harassed by the soldiers.

General Secretary of NUEE, Comrade Joe Ajaero, called on relevant authorities to immediately withdraw the military officers to enable the workers to return fully to their base and continue their operations without undue intimidation and harassment.

Ajaero named the power stations currently occupied by military officers to include Egbin Power Station, Ikeja West Power Station, Ayede Power Station in Ibadan, Oyo State, Benin Power Station, Kano Zonal Office, Kainji and Jebba Power Stations and Gomo Power Stations in Kwara State.

A statement made available to THISDAY reads in part: “Immediately organised labour called off its warning strike to compel the Federal Government to implement the N18.000 new minimum wage on Wednesday, armed military personnel were dispatched to PHCN installations nationwide, allegedly on the orders of President Jonathan.

“It has become expedient to explain to the public why electric power supply has not been fully restored to some parts of the country after the warning strike by NLC has been called off. At the end of the strike action, armed military personnel were dispatched to PHCN installations nationwide, arguably on the orders of the President - Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

“The armed military men's continued occupation of PHCN installations and intimidation of PHCN staff even after the supposed three (3) days warning strike by the NLC had been called-off is affecting the psyche of the workers and would be counter productive in a normal working environment. Besides, the soldiers are equally indulged in undue harassment and intimidation of the innocent and vulnerable workers who are emotionally traumatised at their presence.

“It is therefore regrettable to inform the public on the seeming delay in fully restoring electric power supply to some parts of the country. This is actually caused by the presence of these armed military personnel in those affected areas.

We therefore demand and appeal to the relevant authorities to immediately withdraw these armed military personnel to enable the workers return fully to their base and continue their operations without undue intimidation and harassment. We promise to restore full supply the moment these intruders are withdrawn from our installations nationwide. However, should the harassment and intimidation continue, we may be forced to review our position.”

Meanwhile, irked by the deplorable state of the nation’s power sector, Nigerians have said they are willing to pay for improved service delivery should they be supplied with power for the periods and duration of their preferences.
The availability of power remains the most important priority in power supply, irrespective of who the supplier is, according to a poll.

In a survey titled: “Nigerian Power Sector Poll” conducted by NOI Polls, an opinion polling and market research organisation in Nigeria, they said the deplorable state of the nation’s power sector had continued, despite efforts by successive administrations to address the power supply problem.

The survey, which was conducted in three waves between June and September 2010, revealed “the nation’s poor track record in this critical area continues to attract deep public concern over the inadequacy of supply which has persisted in spite of the well advertised efforts of successive governments to improve the poor level of generation and distribution”.

The research agency also stated that “previous surveys by NOI Polls have shown that most Nigerians would like to see governments at all levels to focus on achieving a significant improvement in the current poor and irregular level of electricity supply which has persisted for so long”.

About 96 per cent of Nigerians would gladly pay more if supply improves to the degree they want, the survey further revealed.
The highest proportion of respondents (42 per cent) said they preferred night time supply.

“Comparatively, 25 per cent said they prefer 24-hour supply; 14 per cent opted for some hours during each period. Another key finding is that three out of four Nigerians (75 per cent) consider availability of supply the most important priority in power supply. 18 per cent ranked predictable supply as their most important priority while 6 per cent put customer service ahead of other considerations. Significantly, price was the least important consideration in the estimation of the respondents with only 1 per cent giving it a thumbs-up,” the survey stressed.

Assessing the impact of the poll, the survey stated that “most Nigerians would prefer 24-hour uninterrupted power supply. Majority of Nigerians would consider paying more than current prices if they are supplied with power for the periods and duration of their preference”.

PoliticsPolice Hunt Assailants For Plucking The Eye Of 84-yr-old Woman by babytejiri(op): 4:59pm On Nov 12, 2010
The Police in Minna, Niger State, have begun an intensive manhunt for a group of cow rustlers suspected to have plucked the eye of an 84-year-old Fulani woman, Hajiya Kaka Hadiza. The incident, according to Daily Sun findings, occurred at a village near Maikunkele some five kilometres from Minna, the state capital.

Hadiza was left at home by her children and grandchildren who travelled to Minna for business. While the octogenarian was relaxing in the hut, her assailants sneaked in and plucked her eye. The old woman was met in a pool of blood by the relations when they returned. She was rushed to the General Hospital, Minna, where she is receiving treatment.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Michael Zuokumor, who visited the victim at the hospital, described her attackers as inhuman and wicked. He promised that a thorough investigation would be carried out to ensure the perpetrators were brought to book.

Dr Mohammed Bosso, who operated on Hadiza, did not give details of the injury, but said that an analysis would be carried out to determine if the left eye was not affected. Meanwhile, Zuokumor confirmed the arrest of a teenage boy (names witheld), who disguised as a woman and was seen parading the streets of Minna.

The 15-year-old boy was sighted by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and when accosted, could not explain his mode of dressing. The Police said that the boy who claimed to have come from Kano, had been taken to court.

PoliticsAnpp Seeks Conduct Of All Elections In One Day by babytejiri(op): 5:29pm On Oct 26, 2010
The All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) has called for the conduct of all elections on the same day in 2011.
Ogbonnaya Onu, the National Chairman of the party, made the call in Abuja on Monday at a one-day public hearing on a bill for an Act to alter the provisions of the 1999 constitution after the first amendment.

"We in the ANPP therefore call for an amendment of the 2010 Electoral Act to reflect the conduct of all elections on the same day," he said. "We believe that by so doing, we can determine the true will of the Nigerian people."

The second amendment of the 2010 Electoral Act is aimed at shifting the date of the general elections, from January to possibly April, in line with requests from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The hearing was organised by the House of Representatives ad hoc committee on the review of the 1999 constitution.

According to Mr Onu, the popular feeling is that the subsisting order of elections will subvert the true desire of the people to elect their leaders during the forthcoming elections. "We in the new ANPP believe that if this problem of election dates is not addressed, it will work against the interest of Nigerians in the electoral process," he said. "We need to ensure that only the choices of the people are declared winners of elections."

He said that the conduct of free and fair elections in 2011 was a great challenge for all Nigerians, and urged the National Assembly to address indiscriminate defection by politicians during the second amendment. "Democracy and the rule of law must go hand in hand to ensure the credibility of our electoral process," he said. "We cannot continue to use the provisions of freedom of association in our constitution to encourage and support what is clearly unprincipled. The challenge we face as a people is to rededicate ourselves to the strong need to work to ensure that our democracy endures in our polity

PoliticsIbru Family To Retain 10% Equity In Oceanic Bank Plc by babytejiri(op): 1:32pm On Oct 12, 2010
Notwithstanding the conviction of the former Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer of Oceanic Bank International Plc,  Mrs. Cecilia Ibru, last Friday for abuse of office and mismanagement of depositors’ funds, the Ibru family will still be allowed to hold 10 per cent equity in the bank.
Ibru, who was removed from office by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) along with seven CEOs of other banks, had been facing trial for mismanagement and putting depositors’ fund in grave danger.
A Lagos High Court, however, sentenced her to 18 months imprisonment without an option of fine, though Ibru will spend only six months in jail as the punishment for the three counts against her would run concurrently.
The former CEO was also ordered to forfeit assets worth N191 billion comprising 94 choice properties across the world particularly United States, Dubai and Nigeria to the Assets Management Corpora-tion of Nigeria (AMCON).
Sources, however, gathered that as part of the plea bargain, which she entered into with the prosecutors, the Ibru family, who used to control majority shares in the bank, would be allowed to own 10 per cent equity.
Going by the current paid up shares of the bank-22.221 billion shares, 10 per cent translates into 2.2 billion units.
Before the bank was taken over by the CBN, the Ibru family used to control over 30 per cent equity in the bank.
News Sources said the decision to allow the family to retain significant shares in the bank is apparently to compensate it (the family) for founding and nurturing the bank before it went public in 2004.
The former bank chief who had pleaded not guilty to a 25-count amended charge filed against her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in February, however, turned round to plead guilty to counts 14, 17 and 23 of the amended charges before the ruling.
Handing down the sentence, Chief Judge of the court, Justice Dan Abutu, ordered that Ibru should forfeit shares in about 80 listed companies on the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE) and 20 unlisted companies.
Justice Abutu added that the terms of imprisonment should run concurrently, which means she would spend six months in Ikoyi Prisons.
The judge, however, directed the prison authorities to take the convict to a highbrow hospital in  Lagos said to be Reddington Hospital, Victoria Island for continuation of treatment, following a passionate appeal by her lead counsel, Prof. Taiwo Osipitan (SAN).

RomanceHow To Really Lose A Guy In Ten Days by babytejiri(op): 7:57pm On Sep 21, 2010
I’m not a huge fan of this movie which stars Kate Hudson and Matt Forever-Shirtless McConaughey. I know it’s supposed to be lighthearted fare for those who are cynical and weary of life and love, and who sometimes like to escape into meaningless fantasy but common!, this movie uses serious style to stretch the limits of our feeble imagination.
Let’s forget the fact that the plot of the entire movie is pretty much about the main characters pretending to be who they are not in order to win a bet and yet, still supposedly falling in love with each other. My main beef with the plot: ten days?! Really should it take that long? Why does anyone need ten days to lose one lousy son of Adam? In this short life of strife and sin? I fail to see the need for such patience and longsuffering!
Let me present to you the accomplished way to accomplish this same feat in less than 60 seconds…

1. BE AVAILABLE.

Very available. After all, no matter much a guy swears that he cannot condone fronting of any sort, he still lives for that chase-and-catch in moderate measure. The trick to being available is to be there for him at every hour! He awakes you from a lusty dream at four in the morning, demanding eba and egusi to be delivered to his house which is ten miles away? You’ll be there. He needs his laundry done at six the next morning? You’ll be there. He needs you to wipe his ass after a particularly grueling battle with the toilet seat? You’ll be thereeeeee, won’t you? Stick to this and his “isn’t-she-so-sweet-selfless-and-caring?” shtick will be transformed to “but-really-what-kind-of-ode-is-this?” in no time.

2. TELL ALL.
You see, nothing intrigues a guy more than the thing he does not know. Why do you think guys spend all their time taking things apart? Exercise your right to free speech until you become extremely “un-mysterious” and boring. Does he really need to know what color your snot is when you blow your nose? Yes, my friend, he does.

3. CRY.
Cry all the time. Cry even when there’s absolutely nothing to cry about. Just cry. Cry blood. This one is very simple. There is just something about the tears of a woman that turns bodyguard Samson to mai’guard Mukaila. Powerful stuff.

4. EAT OLD-SCHOOL STYLE.
Eat with your mouth. Loud noises and grunts of enjoyment are all encouraged. Do not hesitate to pick at that stubborn piece of meat stuck between your teeth with your fingers. Lick your lips after every bite. Gargle after every swallow. Palm oil smears, etc, etc. You go, girl!

5. TELL LIES.
As in those bold-faced kind of lies. You see, men are so used to lying with stealth and crafty cunning that it completely unnerves them to run into someone who lies without tact.

6. KISS LIKE A WATERSPOUT.
Be a gushing fountain– be copious and overly generous in your offering of spittle. Deliver beyond your fair share. After all, the well of saliva is always in abundance, it never runneth out. Keep in mind that you are going to be wading in deep waters if homeboy’s a greenhorn or just a generally bad kisser, in which case the surplus of saliva might not be so unusual to him. In fact, it might even be encouraging. In such a situation, all I can say is enjoy!

7. THE SAY-SOMN-ABOUT-MY-MAMA-CHALLENGE.
Only the insanely courageous will attempt to attack that very weird bond between mother and son. Seldom used. Wisely so. You are on your own.
Well, what if you have exhausted this very promising list of options? What if you have a Die-Hard Part XIII on your hands? The clock is ticking and just like the proverbial tree planted by the water, homeboy will just not be moved. What to do?

Well, we pull out the big guns. Get serious, we are not playing anymore.
The ultimate solution: KISS AND TELL. The less subtle ones among us will refer to this Technical Knock-Out as CHEAT AND FLAUNT.

Believe me, daughters of Abraham…there is no Phensic (Also known as; Panadol, Tylenol) that can relieve the headache of a man who’s been made a fool of. He will be gone in less than 60 seconds, talk less of a day.
