The police in Plateau State on Monday confirmed that two bombs were discovered in the premises of a hostel at the University of Jos on Sunday. The Police Commissioner, Mr Emmanuel Ayeni, said the officers were able to detonate one of the bombs while the second exploded, injuring no person. He said, “When my officers and men with the Anti-Bomb Squad arrived in the scene, they were able to detonate the second bomb and luckily, the one that exploded did not harm anybody or cause damage to the hostel block.’’ Ayeni said although the police had begun investigation, no suspect had been arrested, describing the incident as criminal. He said the bombs were locally made, promising that the planters would be found and brought to judgment. He called on students and members of the university community to go about their normal activities as the police were on top of the situation. A security officer with the university’s Intelligence Unit, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN that the unit received an emergency call on the development at about 8.00 p.m. and subsequently, invited the police. “The bomb exploded was planted behind a hostel block while the one that the police detonated was planted beside a building. “Our joy is that nobody was hurt nor the hostel damaged by the blast; probably this is because the devices were said to be locally made,” he said. In his comment, the Chief Security Officer of the university, retired Col. Labaran Bature, also confirmed the incident in a telephone interview. NAN reports that normalcy has returned to the university as students are going in and out of the affected students’ hostel for their lectures. http://www.nigerianewstoday.com.ng/ |
UNILAG Students, Police Clash - 3 Wounded The Akoka community of Lagos was thrown into chaos, on Friday morning, as the students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) engaged the police in a fierce battle, leaving three students seriously injured. As early as 10 a.m, the students had mobilised to resume the protest over the renaming of the university after the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, late Chief Moshood Abiola by the Federal Government, but met a stiff resistance from the police. The police had stationed their vehicles at the university gate to prevent the students from undertaking a protest march to Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja as planned. However, in their attempt to prevent the protesters from taking over the streets, the police shot teargas sporadically into the air, with teargas sending two female and one male students into coma. The spokesman for the students and the former Public Relations Officer for National Association of Nigerian Students, (NANS), Mr. Usman Oloyede, also confirmed that the students were seriously injured and rushed to the university clinic. He alleged that, “One of the ladies bled due to the teargas shot at her at close range. There are about 10 armoured vehicles loaded with riot policemen to stop the students’ protest. This is another military idea that President Goodluck Jonathan has imposed on students.” In spite of the police presence, however, the students turned the university gate to a centre of entertainment as they trooped out, calling on the Federal Government to reverse its decision. A student, who simply identified himself as Dokun, told newsmen that the students had improvised by staging musicals to register their protest against the government decision on the university. He said, “Ordinarily, we are not supposed to turn the gate to a theatre of entertainment, but the presence of the police has stopped us from walking on the streets. We have chased them away. This is our new base; any attempt by them to move closer will be met with stiff opposition. We don’t want to see policemen here.” One of our correspondents, who monitored the situation, observed that the policemen had relocated to Abule Oja, about 300 metres to the university gate, where they stationed an armoured vehicle. http://www.nigerianewstoday.com.ng/unilag-students-police-clash-3-wounded/ |
Chelsea of UK feeder team player, Emmanuel Seriki, has lost his elder brother, Peace Seriki.Peace committed suicide on Thursday at Kaduna after a quarrel over N500,000 he squandered inappropriately. One of the family members who spoke to newsmen said Peace drank a highly poisonous insecticide known as Snipper which he mixed with shaving powder. “We woke up this morning (Thursday) and discovered that his door was locked. When we forced it opened, we saw him dead,” he stated. According to information gathered from close friends at Emma’ residence at Narayi Highcost, Kaduna, he must have felt humiliated that his younger brother, Emma, could call him unprintable names just for spending his money without proper explanation. A source hinted P.M.NEWS that Emma, the Chelsea player, sent the money into Peace’s account and asked him to cash it from the bank and meet him in Abuja on Tuesday 29, May, when he flew into the country . But Peace withdrew the money and spent it. All efforts to speak with Emma Seriki on the why the quarrel with his elder brother proved abortive. He simply told our reporter: “Please I am not in the right state of mind to talk now.” The family decided to bury him today . http://www.nigerianewstoday.com.ng/chelsea-players-brother-commits-suicide/ |

A letter by President Goodluck Jonathan to the Senate yesterday caused a stir, as many senators took umbrage at the letter which reportedly endorsed Senate President David Mark for the position when the new upper chamber is inaugurated on May 29.Some of the senators who spoke to Daily Champion on the conditions of anonymity said the President had by the letter preempted senators many who desire for a change of leadership. The Presidents choice for Mark may have unsettled Governor Danjuma Goje of Gombe who is said to be scheming to replace Mark next month. President Jonathan in a letter to the Senate President and read on the floor of the Senate said: working together (with Mark), I am confident that we can successfully drive our nations transformation over the next four years However, there were speculations that Uche Chukwumerije may have pitched tent with Goje in his bid to stop the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu. Chukwumerije who was said to be working for Governor Goje was alleged to have decided to give his kinsman a fight for his job next month. Daily Champion gathered that Chukwumerije was alleged to have declared his interest to run with Goje even when odds favour Senator Enyinna Abaribe for the job. Our source said some of the northern senators would rather go for Abaribe in the event Ekweremadu fail than to have Chukwumerije as the deputy senate president. Although Abaribe was said to have remain mute over such ambition, but source alleged that Ekweremadu may not face stiff opposition. Jonathan in a letter of congratulation to Mark over his victory at the National Assembly election assured the senate president of his support in the next four years He said: “I assure you of the federal governments unstinting support as we jointly work to reposition Nigeria for her God-ordained greatness”. He said the re-election of Mark should therefore be seen as a further call to service and an opportunity for moral introspection, spiritual reorganization and a new resolve to chart a glorious future for your people Meanwhile the Idoma professors have endorsed the Senate President, saying that would be counter productive to change what they called a winning team. The professors in a statement signed by Prof. Owoicho Akpa said their son has made an indelible mark in the Senate, adding that his track record is strong enough to earn him fresh four year tenure in office. http://www.nigerianewstoday.com.ng/president-goodluck-jonathans-letter-causes-stir-in-senate/ |
The Nigeria Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’I, has expressed optimism that the new nine federal universities would take off in September 2011. Speaking in Abuja at the two-day retreat for Vice-Chancellors and Registrars of the newly-established universities, organised by the National Universities Commission (NUC), the minister said that the retreat was to acquaint the vice-chancellors and other officials with the NUC guidelines on the universities and to ensure that the institutions have a smooth take-off. “What we are doing is to ensure that these vice-chancellors are aware, even though most of them are former vice-chancellors, that they have more responsibilities. “We want to ensure that we acquaint them with the proper procedures of NUC, the guidelines and minimum benchmark,’’ she said. According to her, the Federal Government has directed that each of the new universities should not have more than 500 students at a time. Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Executive Secretary, Education Trust Fund (ETF), said the retreat would ensure the vice-chancellors and registrars are updated on certain processes in the university system. He listed the processes to include procedure for accreditation, financial regulations, public procurement processes, procedures for accessing ETF funds and governance issues in the universities. In his remarks, Prof. Julius Okojie, NUC’s Executive Secretary, said the retreat would assist the participants on how to relate with their host communities. Represented by Mr Akinbode Agbaoye, the Deputy Executive Secretary of NUC, Okojie noted that some of the vice-chancellors are Nigerians who were brought back home from the Diaspora. One of the participants, Prof. Jubrila Amin, Vice-Chancellor, University of Dutse, said the universities were prepared to meet the challenges of running tertiary institutions. He disclosed that his institution’s temporary site was already undergoing renovation to keep to the September take-off date. The federal government had in February 2011 approved the nine new universities with a take-off grant of N1.5 billion per university. CHAIRMAN of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, yesterday said that the impact of the changes he initiated upon assumption of office were being clouded by the past misdeeds of the electoral umpire. He did not spare the Commission’s officials of blame in Nigerians’ continued waning faith in INEC’s ability to conduct credible polls in April as he accused them of colluding with corrupt politicians to manipulate past elections. Jega spoke yesterday in Abuja at a three-day retreat for electoral officers (EOs) drawn from the 774 local councils in the country. According to him, because of the indecent conduct of INEC officials in the past, a lot of Nigerians do not still believe that the commission was capable of conducting free, fair and credible elections next month. There were also indications yesterday that 63 political parties are set to sign a code of conduct with INEC on peaceful conduct of the forthcoming polls. The revised conduct document was ratified during a recent retreat held between INEC and the parties in Calabar, Cross River State. Mrs. Funmi Wakama, the Programme Manager, Media and Outreach of the International Republican Institute (IRI), the facilitators of the event, said yesterday that the revised code of conduct would guide the political parties on how to comport themselves before, during and after the elections. A similar pact was signed in 2006 ahead of the 2007 polls. Jega, who admonished the electoral officers to conduct themselves in an honest, decent and transparent manner at the event with the theme: “Free, fair and credible elections in April,” said “Nigerians view us with mixed feelings; there are so many Nigerians who still worry whether INEC can deliver free, fair and credible elections. There are Nigerians who feel that the enormous changes taking place in the commission can permeate to the grassroots to ensure free and fair elections. http://www.nigerianewstoday.com.ng/attahiru-jega-to-inec-officials-no-more-room-for-misbehavior/

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday revealed that he was tricked to attend the reception ceremony recently held in honour of Bode George who regained freedom after completing a two year jail term.Mr Obasanjo made this known in an interview with newsmen while preparing for his 74 birthday anniversary at his Hilltop Private residence in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, scheduled to hold today (Saturday). He stressed that his attendance of the event was totally in error. “You got it wrong again. I was not part of the celebration of Bode Goerge. He sent a passionate message to me from prison urging me to attend a family church thanksgiving and I believe that for whatever any family is giving thanks in the church or in the mosque and he invites me and I am able to go there, I will go there, whether it is for marriage, for burial, house warming or christening a child.” Mr Obasanjo said. “But when I got to the church, the atmosphere I found was more than a family affair. And I even took the opportunity to ask the state PDP Chairman that, ‘is this a PDP affair?’ And he told me it was not a PDP affair. “And I have condemned it but he did not go to prison for political offence. If he had been sent to prison for political offence, then he comes back and all his political associates may get round him and PDP must do something noble and wholesome but in this case, PDP as a party must dissociate itself from celebrating criminality. “When I asked the state chairman, he said ‘well, you know Area Boys, they do hijack these things.’ If it’s Area Boys, leave it to the Area Boys and not to PDP,” the party’s board of trustee chairman emphasised. On the Federal Court judgement which pronounced Tunji Olurin as the party governorship candidate in Ogun State, Mr Obasanjo said: “Don’t forget that PDP is a family; there may be a little misunderstanding but we have to go to court for adjudication; the court adjudicates but as soon as possible, the family should come together and forge ahead. http://www.nigerianewstoday.com.ng/olusegun-obasanjo-attend-bode-george-reception/ |
There are indications that, the imprisoned chief of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olabode George, will be set free on Saturday. He was sentenced to two years imprisonment, together with five others, by an Ikeja High Court on October 27, 2009, without an option of fine. Mr. George, Aminu Dabo (former Managing Director of the NPA); Olusegun Abidoye; Abdullahi Tafida; Zanna Maidaribe and Sule Aliyu, were convicted on charges of abuse of office and award of about ₦100bn contracts without due process. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had on August 8, 2008 arraigned George and the others on a 163-count charge-later reduced to 68– to which they all pleaded not guilty. Spokesperson for Nigerian Prisons Service, Lagos Command, Ope Fatiniku, however said on Wednesday that no official pronouncement had been made over their release. ‘‘The prison authority has not pronounced any date of release for the PDP leader. It is against the ethics of the service to disclose a programme of release,” he said. According to him, the prison authority does not disclose the programme of the release of an inmate for security reasons. ‘‘The prison authority gives out information immediately an inmate is released, but not before the action is carried out,” he added. The Deputy Controller of Prisons, Ailewon Noel, who is directly responsible for Mr. George and the other five convicts refused to comment. The relations and friends of Mr. George are eagerly awaiting his return home and are planning elaborate receptions meant “to shake Lagos”. http://www.nigerianewstoday.com.ng/bode-george-freedom-saturday/ |
