#JonathanMyHero |
By Bode Gbadebo The outcome of the 2015 elections has thrown Preisdent Goodluck Jonathan up as a true hero of democracy. Wherever he goes, history will vindicate him as a man who genuinely served and left the stage when it became expedient under democratic circumstances. For many, there was no how the polls would have been conducted without any crisis resulting from it. The fact that he could concede defeat was an act thought alien to the Nigerian politician. By calling the president-elect, he enters into the pantheon of nationalists and many will accept and appreciate his good nature. There has been so much tension and apprehensions now with that singular act; he has through exemplary conduct doused tension and showed that the panic and hate speech that characterises the 2015 electioneering by Nigerians are needless. President Jonathan has shown how well he is committed to allowing free and fair elections in the country. In the past, he displayed statemanly disposition when his party lost in Anambra, Ondo and Osun State. Although his party won in Ekiti, it cannot be linked to rigging. Jonathan has restored hope in one Nigeria and obviates the feeling of insecurity and apprehension over possible outburst of crisis in the nation as the 2015 election erased the ignoble do or die agenda of most dye-in-the-wool poll. While his party loyalists created a feeling of insecurity in the country with a view to exploiting such to achieve their “inordinate ambition”, Jonathan rose above the fray by insisting that his continued stay in power was not worth anybody’s life. It is to his eternal credit that bloodshed has been averted. His stedfastness on ensuring that people’s votes count in the spirit of one man, one woman, one youth, one vote without unleashing the apparatus of state security on opponents makes him an undisputable hero of Nigeria’s transitional democracy.

armed robbers on Friday 6th march, invaded a commercial bank inside the Rivers State University of Science and Technology and killed two persons before escaping with sacks containing undisclosed amount of money. Witnesses, the police and the university authority said the robbers numbering six trailed a bullion van into the university at about 3.30 p.m. Immediately bank officials started offloading money from the van, the robbers, who came in a Toyota Highlander car; opened fire and swiftly snatched the money in two “Ghana-must- go” bags and escaped through the over-crowded back gates of the university. (The pics above) A student, who witnessed the daring operationration, told Me how students and visitors scampered for safety in different directions as the hoodlums shot sporadically in front of the commercial bank. While trying to escape from the campus, the robbers shot and killed an unidentified person while injuring five other. As soon as the bandits got outside the university premises, some policemen engaged them in a shootout as they sped through the crowded Iloabuchi and Nsuka streets in Mile One area of Port Harcourt. Apparently, the police shotand busted one of the tyres of their getaway vehicle but in a desperate move to escape, Mr. Chuks said the robbers shot and killed a driver of a sport utility vehicle and dragged his corpse down before escaping with the vehicle. “The armed robbers were fearless. They entered the state University of Science and Technology, went straight to the bullion van and opened fire,” “They killed one person instantly while five others who were injured were rushed to the hospital. It is shocking that armed robbers can operate successfully inside the campus and go scot-free. “What I am talking about happened around 3.30pm. They came in through the main gate and left through the back gate of the university. The bank locked their customers inside during the attack.” |
