Staring at the screen, looking intently as if the graphics were quite impressive. He didn't know what he was doing - perhaps most people didn't either. Now the sun had set and everywhere was gradually getting dark. On a seat, within four tables arranged perpendicularly in a medium-sized staff room capable of occupying 40 standing students with no space to spare, sat a slightly depressed male. He quietly but hurriedly grabbed his l-bag, handsets and modem. Leaving for home "Hey, can I have a talk with you?" asked a dark, rough -looking slim guy - extending his hands which must have hung in the air for about 5 seconds. I am sorry can I help you? - Deen asked 'Let's have a conversa....' - emmm...I am sorry 'm on my way to...Deen quickly interrupted. ' To where?' he asked. To a building, mmm ..to a house, home?...Deen said swiftly, weighing his excuses. Well he could tell this guy was certainly a roadside preacher. O no, I ain't waiting for this - Deen muttered, scurrying off without considering the strangers gesture. A sense of freedom and carefree attitude overwhelmed him - O yea, dad travelled! Good evening Ma, 'you are welcome' - the kiosk owner replied. With a sigh of relief after the 6 minutes walk, he entered the gate to the compound which wasn't locked as usual. "Something is on my mind!" - Deen said to himself, filled with burden and weakness. Pretending as if there was nothing out of place, he moved around the large but under-furnished sitting room, which barely allowed him to stand erect. 'No Dinner! I want to lie on the mattress. There is a problem. Philosophy might just help. It hasn't come yet, but when it does it smells like death ....not literary he said. It's just weakening .... |
The brain uses sleep to wash away the waste toxins built up during a hard day's thinking, researchers have shown. The US team believe the "waste removal system" is one of the fundamental reasons for sleep. Their study, in the journal Science, showed brain cells shrink during sleep to open up the gaps between neurons and allow fluid to wash the brain clean. They also suggest that failing to clear away some toxic proteins may play a role in brain disorders. One big question for sleep researchers is why do animals sleep at all when it leaves them vulnerable to predators? It has been shown to have a big role in the fixing of memories in the brain and learning, but a team at the University of Rochester Medical Centre believe that "housework" may be one of the primary reasons for sleep. "The brain only has limited energy at its disposal and it appears that it must choose between two different functional states - awake and aware or asleep and cleaning up," said researcher Dr Maiken Nedergaard. "You can think of it like having a house party. You can either entertain the guests or clean up the house, but you can't really do both at the same time." source: http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/health-24567412?SThisFB&fb_source=feed&ref=feed&refid=7&_ft_=qid.5936198742696461130%253Amf_story_key.428501540587714 |

Making a good first impression is essential in many social and business situations, so learn the proper way to shake hands. This gives you the opportunity to establish your friendliness and accessibility, whether you are meeting your neighbors or starting a new job. Practice with friends or family members before you start shaking the hands of strangers. Remember that people often initially judge you by your handshake, so make sure it shows your confidence and pleasant personality. 1. Know when to initiate the handshake : The person in a higher position of authority or age should be the first one to extend a hand. For example, if you are interviewing for a job, the interviewer should be the one to take the lead. When meeting future in-laws, the father-in-law should start the handshake. If you make a mistake and initiate it, don’t withdraw your hand because that would be rude. Always follow through with a handshake. Smile and continue with the introduction. Don’t apologize. 2. Stand and look the other person in the eye before shaking hands. If you are sitting, rise before extending your hand. This shows respect and puts you on the same level as the other person. Make eye contact and offer a sincere smile to show that you are happy to be where you are. Be still and face the other person to prevent giving the impression that you are in a hurry to get away. If you are walking, try to stop, turn, and face the other person, unless it creates an awkward situation. 3. Offer a greeting before and during the handshake. If your palms are damp, you can delay extending your hand if you introduce yourself while blotting your palm on the side of your slacks or skirt. Your greeting should include his or her name and a pleasantry, such as, “It’s so nice to meet you, Ms. Jones.” If you have more nice things to say, include them at this time, but don’t go overboard. In order to remember the other person’s name, you might want to say it several times during the conversation: once during the initial handshake, shortly afterward, and again while shaking his or hand before you part ways. This will make a very strong, positive impression because people like knowing you care enough to remember their names 4. Your handshake should be firm but not crushing. You don’t want to offer a limp hand because it gives the impression of weakness. However, this does not mean you should crush the other person’s hand. Be firm but not overpowering. If the other person offers a limp hand, give a gentle squeeze. This can be a cue for him or her to grip more firmly. 5. The handshake should be approximately two to five seconds in duration. Most people prefer shorter handshakes. Be observant and follow the lead of the other person, particularly if he or she is in a superior position to you in business or social position. If the other person continues holding onto your hand longer than five seconds, politely withdraw your hand. Maintain eye contact and a pleasant expression afterward to maintain a positive interaction. 6. Be aware of your other hand. Most people use their right hands, unless they have a reason to use the left. Ideally, your left hand should be visible and unclenched. Don’t have your left hand in your pocket because this appears defensive. In most business situations, you shouldn’t use your left hand to touch the other person’s arm or cup his or her hand. However, in a personal setting, you may. 7. Shake hands in an up-and-down motion. The handshake shouldn’t go back and forth or side to side. Don’t pump the other person’s hand more than three times, or the greeting may become very uncomfortable. Occasions you will need to shake hands: Initial introduction Job interview Seeing someone you haven’t seen in a long time Greeting guests when you are the host or hostess Greeting a host or hostess when you are the guest Saying goodbye to a friend or business associate Whenever someone else extends his or her hand |

topas100: Great article.@op Are u an optometrist?Nope. But medically inclined. |
credits: thomasbond.co.uk Today is the World Sight Day, and the focus is on the need to demystify blindness as the scourge of humanity. This is because blindness is regarded as one of the chronic health problems that anyone can suffer from. While blindness may be caused by a myriad of problems, which are sometimes preventable, the bitter truth is that when it happens, life not only changes for the victim — especially where both eyes are affected—those around him will also feel the pain, even if psychologically. Diabetes A Diabetologist/Medical Director of Rainbow Specialist Medical Centre, Lekki Phase 1, Dr. Afoko - diabetes, when neglected, may result in many health complications, including vision impairment or outright blindness. She warns that people with diabetes have a higher risk of blindness as a result of what she calls “diabetic retinopathy.” She says, “Diabetic retinopathy is the most common diabetic eye disease and may lead to blindness if left untreated.” Experts warn that approximately 80 per cent of all patients who have had diabetes for at least 10 years risk some degree of diabetic retinopathy. “Diabetic retinopathy is the damage to the retina (the light-sensitive membrane that covers the back of the eye) Glaucoma Aburi says glaucoma is a term that describes a group of eye conditions that lead to damage to the optic nerve as a result of increasing pressure in the eye. The eye physician explains further, “Sometimes, the cause is unknown — as in the case of chronic glaucoma, which tends to run in families and painlessly and slowly damages vision. “Another class of the disease, called acute glaucoma, occurs when the exit of the aqueous humor fluid is suddenly blocked. This causes a quick, severe, and painful rise in the pressure in the eye. It is a medical emergency that must not be ignored.” Aburi adds that when an eye suffers acute glaucoma, it soon affects the second eye, hence the need to act swiftly. “Even eye drops that dilate the eyes, and certain medications, may trigger an acute glaucoma attack,” Aburi warns. Among babies, Aburi contends, congenital glaucoma happens because it often runs in families and is present at birth. “It is caused by abnormal eye development,” he says. Physicians warn that certain drugs, such as corticosteroids, can cause secondary glaucoma. Ditto some eye diseases such as uveitis (swelling and irritation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye), trauma, and some systemic diseases — which affect a number of organs and tissues, or affect the body as a whole. “That’s why regular eye check-up is absolutely necessary for people of all ages, and especially for those who are ageing,” Aburi counsels. Cataracts Aburi says this is a condition that clouds the lens inside the eye and leads to a decrease in vision. “It is most commonly due to biological ageing and it is the most common cause of blindness, though it is absolutely treatable,” the doctor says. “Other causes of blindness include blocked blood vessels, complications of premature birth, complications of eye surgery, lazy eye syndrome, stroke, and certain types of tumors,” Food for the eye Nutritionists say diets rich in fruit and green, leafy vegetables can promote eye health. Feast on them, as there’s plenty benefits to get from them.

National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has warned Health Care Facilities (HCFs) and Healthcare Maintenance Organisations (HMOs) against cutting corners in the discharge of their duties under the scheme. The North-East Zonal Coordinator of the scheme, Alhaji Ma’aji Abdu, gave the warning yesterday at a one-day interactive forum with NHIS accredited HCFs and HMOs at the Federal Secretariat, Bauchi. He said the success of health insurance in the country depends on the sincerity of purpose by all stakeholders and appealed to them to utilise the opportunity provided by the forum to openly discuss with NHIS staff on how to move the scheme forward. In his remark, the Bauchi State Coordinator of the scheme, Sani Garba Affa, said the essence of the forum was to provide a platform for cross fertilisation of ideas among stakeholders. He said the recent creation of state offices by the scheme was intended to expand the activities of the scheme and to bring services closer to the people. According to Affa, part of the objectives of the health insurance were to protect families from the financial hardship of huge medical bills and improve access to good healthcare services among different income groups, and called key-players to work towards the realisation of the objectives. He appealed to HCFs and HMOs to avail themselves with the operational guidelines and procedures involved in order to ensure hitch- free service delivery to enrollees. He said such forum would avail stakeholders the opportunity to discuss matters concerning service provision to enrollees, noting that the state office will continue to engage key stakeholders for the benefit of the programme. Participants were drawn from various HCFs and HMOs in Bauchi State attended the interaction. http://pointblanknews.com/pbn/news/nhis-warns-against-violation-of-operational-guidelines/

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan was snatched by gunmen before dawn Thursday from a Tripoli hotel where he resides, the government said. The abduction appeared to be in retaliation for the U.S. special forces raid over the weekend that seized a Libyan al-Qaeda suspect from the streets of the capital. Zeidan's abduction reflected the weakness of Libya's government, which is virtually held hostage by powerful militias, many of which are made up of Islamic militants. Militants were angered by the U.S. capture of the suspected militant, known as Abu Anas al-Libi, and accused the government of colluding in or allowing the raid. In a sign of Libya's chaos, Zeidan's seizure was depicted by various sources as either an "arrest" or an abduction. That is because the militias are interwoven in Libya's fragmented power structure. With the police and army in disarray, many are enlisted to serve in state security agencies, though their loyalty is more to their own commanders than to government officials and they have often intimidated or threatened officials. The militias are rooted in the brigades that fought in the uprising that toppled autocrat Moammar Gadhafi in 2011, and are often referred to as "revolutionaries." A statement on the government's official website said Zeidan was taken at dawn to an "unknown location for unknown reasons" by a group believed to be "revolutionaries" from a security agency known as the Anti-Crime Committee. The Cabinet held an emergency meeting Thursday morning, headed by Zeidan's deputy, Abdel-Salam al-Qadi. The snatching of Zeidan came hours after he met with the family of Nazih Abdul-Hamed al-Ruqai, the al-Qaida suspect seized by the Americans, now being held in a U.S. warship.

ACT OF GOD - an extraordinary interruption by a natural cause or the usual course of events that experience, prescience or care cannot reasonably foresee or prevent [Merriam Webster dictionary ] SYNONYMS : Disaster, catastrophe, tragedy. (Pardon the english lecture) It didn't take much ado before the vicious commentator FFK bashed the Aviation minister - Stella Oduah, after she described an accident as an "act of God" “We do not pray for accidents but they are inevitable. But we will continue to do everything to ensure that we do not have accidents. But an accident is an act of God" - Stella Oduah In a haste to expose his ignorance, FFK engaged in a diatribe saying ... "God does not cause accidents. Only the devil does that. You can say a fatal accident is an ACT OF GOD if the devil is your God"....lol Of course that's true, but taking the statement Literally only shows that this guy(educated) is rambling, and moreover ignorant of his numerous hate articles The truth which which we all know - The aviation sector isn't the best, poor maintenance and all that. Even so unfortunate, the aircraft that crashed was OLD! , frail...too bad. (RIP to the dead) It was a DISASTER! ,it was a TRAGEDY!!...it was an ACT OF GOD!!!

Let’s say it’s 6.15pm and you’re going home (alone ofcourse), after an unusually hard day on the job. You’re really tired, upset and frustrated. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to drag out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home. Unfortunately you don’t know if you’ll be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself. HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE Since many people are alone when they suffer a heartattack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital. Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!!
