Nairaland / General / Leadership Of User-centered Design by BalogunIdowu(m): 3:27am On Jun 24
LEADERSHIP OF USER-CENTERED DESIGN

Leadership can be attained through any of the following ways: position, appointment, qualification or knowledge, experience, election, or consultation. Whatever the modality, a leader has people and things they manage, direct to achieve a certain outcome or success.

The role description widely varies from a family head, a SUG president, a religious leader, a team leader, a chairman, and a president among others. While some may be representative roles, others can be administrative, political, or a blend of any.

The message from this post may cut across boards - by being accountable to the people we lead and having their interests at heart, I am more focused on political-related leaders who have either been elected or appointed - anywhere both locally and beyond the borders.

Unfortunately, while we may all have a share of some of the blame a nation (eg Nigeria) is facing, our leaders have a major share of the bite. We need to deliberately and consciously hold them accountable by keeping them on their feet. There will continue to be leaders who come out with "I will fix the roads", "I will improve the education" and the continuous "I's agenda" not rising higher than their sole interest. Surely, the masses know any intending leader should fix roads, provide electricity, improve the economy, and more - we no longer want "the what" but "the how".

I must reiterate that Leadership is hard work for anyone who has led small groups or held positions not to mention on a grand scale. However, this is not an excuse for a fiasco that may be heavily weighing on people. Leaders are not expected to be magicians who make things happen in the wave of their wands like some think - for today's problems are a culmination of periods before and will take some time to be resolved.

Importantly, our leaders need now than ever to have a "user-centered design" approach to solving problems; having the masses satisfied (to some extent) in making decisions, policies, and laws just as a designer considers the "user" through iterations to have a "usable product" like the app you're on now. By masses, I do not imply their immediate family, aides, or associates who may not know or feel what the impact of a decision will be on the common man. For instance, making new naira notes and enforcing them on masses almost immediately throwing the nation into chaos; removing a fuel subsidy abruptly without a prior plan on ways to ease likely difficulty to mention a few.

In the course of working on this, I came across a video of a legislator being interviewed on channels TV and I cannot but wonder about the keg of gunpowder we are still sitting on as a nation. Do we still have hope or a chance of getting things right? I wonder.

So, what can we do? Briefly, as said, magic won't do it, nor will prayers without our volition to right our wrongs across all boards including you and I in that role we occupy no matter the size. Here are a few thoughts that may be helpful:

+ User (masses) centered approach to making laws, decisions, etc.
+ Apply Pareto's principle: Start by solving problems that will improve another aspect of the masses's lives massively. For instance, electricity/available and cheap fuel will reduce production costs, transport costs...; Good roads will reduce traffic congestion and transport costs...;
+ Respected societal individuals including truthful religious figures should call erring leaders about the precarious state of things.
+ Leaders should embrace THIS - Trust/Transparency, Honesty, Integrity, and Sincerity as largely as possible particularly in financial dealings.
+ To reduce poverty and not continue using it as a tool of sympathy to show goodness.
+ Leaders should embrace "the how" and discard the "the what" they will do when they get a position
+ This is not Utopia, but I do think parties have an equal interest in making a nation better regardless of the ruling. They can be called to collaborate and be willing to support or share ideas at least before clashing again for the position. But what do we usually get? You know better.

Dear reader, every leader belongs to a family, group, community, faith, etc, let us assist them to help us by "telling them what they want to hear and what they need to hear" for a societal reformation.

Until next time.

Is it just me or it's same with other guys, the embarrassment I feel is as if I'm the one doing something embarrassing, and I can't help the feeling, because of that I shy away from buying foodstuff or other stuff that will make me bargain.

Most times I ask my sisters or girlfriend to accompany me so she can do the bargaining or get the stuff for me.

My older brother bargains alot like he can't do without bargaining and for that I avoid going anywhere with him.

Incase you're wondering how I survive without bargaining, I just use people close to me when its something I must bargain for, but if it's something like clothes, I know the standard price for stuff like that so I just make an offer, and for basic things like packaged groceries I buy from supermarkets in more than one quantity.

To dey bargain no be my own problem self but where to start with at times...

Some sellers are extremely wicked with how dey put price on their goods.

Imagine calling something for 3k and wanting to eventually buy it for 1k, it's so nonsensical cos you know the price was raised high.

Politics / Re: Fg Unveils Pink Riders Tricycle Scheme by BalogunIdowu(m): 9:55am On Jun 09
danladi02:
FEDERAL MINISTRY OF WOMEN AFFAIRS, ABUJA

PRESS RELEASE

FG UNVEILS PINK RIDERS TRICYCLE SCHEME

As part of efforts aimed at alleviating poverty and ensuring job creation in the country, especially among the feminine gender, the Federal Government has inaugurated a Pink Riders Scheme with a view to empowering women to earn a living and contribute meaningfully to the upliftment of the lives of their families and the nation at large

Unveiling the Scheme today at the Mogadishu
Cantonment, Abuja, the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs, Barrister (Mrs) Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye stated that the initiative is targeted at boosting the economic status of women so as not to only make them self-reliant and entrepreneurial but to also create an opportunity for the actualization of their potentials in life

She informed that statistics has shown that women constitute about 49 percent of the country's population, thus, if adequately empowered, it will no doubt contribute to the socio-economic growth and development of the country

Kennedy-Ohanenye observed the need
for conscious efforts to be put in place by stakeholders towards the improvement of the lives of women in accordance with global realities

The Minister stated further that the Scheme launched today was one of the many projects of the Ministry initiated to empower the feminine gender in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Administration

Kennedy-Ohanenye who explained that the commencement of the Pilot phase at the military barracks was to ensure adequate provision of security as well as seamless operation for the women, added that this will make room for proper coordination, consistency and sustainability for the Project which is being test run before extension to other States of the Federation

She therefore called on the beneficiaries of the Scheme to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the Federal Government to transform their lives and also contribute to the development of their families and country at large

In a welcome address, the Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, Abuja, Major General Isoni assured of maximum security for the Pink Riders as well as proper monitoring to ensure efficiency and continuity of the Programme.

He commended the Ministry for the initiative, which he said will go a long way in boosting the gender's confidence in the present administration's commitment to the upliftment of their lives

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs Julie Idris
assured that they will put in their best to ensure the success of the programme so that more women can be empowered through the Scheme

She thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in particular,
the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs, Barrister (Mrs) Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye as well as the Management Staff of the Ministry for placing issues of women empowerment on the front burner.

If we are in our right senses, should women be riding this in the first place.

We have to separate reality from fact and emotions.

He spoke reality which isn't wrong, but the fact remains education is important whether formal or informal. However, I see you taking his statement emotionally.
