Nairaland / General / Leadership Of User-centered Design by BalogunIdowu(m): 3:27am On Jun 24 |
LEADERSHIP OF USER-CENTERED DESIGN Leadership can be attained through any of the following ways: position, appointment, qualification or knowledge, experience, election, or consultation. Whatever the modality, a leader has people and things they manage, direct to achieve a certain outcome or success. The role description widely varies from a family head, a SUG president, a religious leader, a team leader, a chairman, and a president among others. While some may be representative roles, others can be administrative, political, or a blend of any. The message from this post may cut across boards - by being accountable to the people we lead and having their interests at heart, I am more focused on political-related leaders who have either been elected or appointed - anywhere both locally and beyond the borders. Unfortunately, while we may all have a share of some of the blame a nation (eg Nigeria) is facing, our leaders have a major share of the bite. We need to deliberately and consciously hold them accountable by keeping them on their feet. There will continue to be leaders who come out with "I will fix the roads", "I will improve the education" and the continuous "I's agenda" not rising higher than their sole interest. Surely, the masses know any intending leader should fix roads, provide electricity, improve the economy, and more - we no longer want "the what" but "the how". I must reiterate that Leadership is hard work for anyone who has led small groups or held positions not to mention on a grand scale. However, this is not an excuse for a fiasco that may be heavily weighing on people. Leaders are not expected to be magicians who make things happen in the wave of their wands like some think - for today's problems are a culmination of periods before and will take some time to be resolved. Importantly, our leaders need now than ever to have a "user-centered design" approach to solving problems; having the masses satisfied (to some extent) in making decisions, policies, and laws just as a designer considers the "user" through iterations to have a "usable product" like the app you're on now. By masses, I do not imply their immediate family, aides, or associates who may not know or feel what the impact of a decision will be on the common man. For instance, making new naira notes and enforcing them on masses almost immediately throwing the nation into chaos; removing a fuel subsidy abruptly without a prior plan on ways to ease likely difficulty to mention a few. In the course of working on this, I came across a video of a legislator being interviewed on channels TV and I cannot but wonder about the keg of gunpowder we are still sitting on as a nation. Do we still have hope or a chance of getting things right? I wonder. So, what can we do? Briefly, as said, magic won't do it, nor will prayers without our volition to right our wrongs across all boards including you and I in that role we occupy no matter the size. Here are a few thoughts that may be helpful: + User (masses) centered approach to making laws, decisions, etc. + Apply Pareto's principle: Start by solving problems that will improve another aspect of the masses's lives massively. For instance, electricity/available and cheap fuel will reduce production costs, transport costs...; Good roads will reduce traffic congestion and transport costs...; + Respected societal individuals including truthful religious figures should call erring leaders about the precarious state of things. + Leaders should embrace THIS - Trust/Transparency, Honesty, Integrity, and Sincerity as largely as possible particularly in financial dealings. + To reduce poverty and not continue using it as a tool of sympathy to show goodness. + Leaders should embrace "the how" and discard the "the what" they will do when they get a position + This is not Utopia, but I do think parties have an equal interest in making a nation better regardless of the ruling. They can be called to collaborate and be willing to support or share ideas at least before clashing again for the position. But what do we usually get? You know better. Dear reader, every leader belongs to a family, group, community, faith, etc, let us assist them to help us by "telling them what they want to hear and what they need to hear" for a societal reformation. Until next time. Idowu I. Balogun IndigenousGenious
