The organized Labour in Abia state has handed a 14-day ultimatum to Governor Alex Otti, to ensure full payment of the N30,000 national minimum wage and the N35,000 palliative wage award approved by the federal government for workers in the state.

In a letter addressed to Governor Otti, by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Abia state council and Trade Union Congress, TUC, Abia state council, the organized Labour requested that the N30,000 former national minimum wage and the N35,000 wage award approved by the federal government 8 months ago for workers be paid without further delay to Abia workers

Labour also noted that a committee was set up to produce a salary structure based on the N30,000 former national minimum wage which the state government failed to implement.


In the letter, signed by the Comrade Ogbonnaya Okoro and Comrade Emma Alozie , Abia NLC Chairman and Secretary, respectively; Comrade Eneogwe Ihechi and Comrade George Okogbue, Abia TUC Chairman and Secretary, respectively; and Chairman and Secretary of the Joint Negotiating Council, Comrade Innocent Ekwenye and Comrade Oby Maduako, respectively; the organized Labour explained that it relied on the national organized Labour meeting held in Abuja on Monday ,May 20,2024.

The letter read; “Consequent upon the meeting held by the national labour leadership on Monday,May 20,2024,which the state councils were directed to issue 14 day ultimatum to various state governments who have not implemented the N30,000 former minimum wage and N35,000 palliative wage award.


“Furtherance to the directive,the organized labour in the state comprising the NLC,TUC and JPSNC,met on Wednesday, and noted with dismay the various challenges facing labour unions and their members in the state.

“These include non implementation of the former national minimum wage to Abia Non implementation of the N35,000 palliative wage award to Abia workers. The organized labour observed with utmost regret that from 2019 till date ,the Abia state government has failed to fully implement the national minimum wage as agreed upon by the organized Labour, government and employers in the private sector and gazetted by the federal government. Since the state government has continued to shun every attempt for further discussion on the minimum wage.

“The organized labour also critically viewed the issue of non implementation of the N35,000 palliative wage award 8 months after its announcement by the state government as disheartening and this has dampened the moral of workers in the state.

“Since government is a continuum, Your Excellency, you are humbly requested to put in place necessary machinery to kick start the process of implementing in full the N30,000 former national minimum wage and the N35,000 wage award within 14 days in line with the directive of the joint NEC meeting of the NLC and TUC.”

I remember when a church leader narrated his ordeal with armed robbers, after he traveled from Port-harcourt all the way to Benin city to attend a church program at the headquarters of Church of God Mission, and was also sent in the process to deliver some gifts to Benson Idahosa (late church founder when he was still alive) by members of the church in Rivers state.

He said the robbers stole everything he had, including the bag containing his own clothes, but left every single item they saw that was addressed to Benson Idahosa.

He was shocked that the armed robbers were not afraid to rob him of everything he had, except anything that belong to Benson Idahosa.

Just the name of Benson Idahosa inscribed on the gifts alone seemed to strike fear into the hearts of the armed robbers that they dare not tamper with them, even though they were merely gift items sent by his church members (of another state) which he may never have heard of or even had any idea of their gifts by then.

Although the poor man himself may have heard several mind-blowing stories about Benson Idahosa prior to that, however this particular one was now drawn from his own bitter experience, as he didn't have any other clothes to wear for the program he traveled all the way for except that on his body, but for Benson Idahosa who helped him with some, after he had delivered the said gifts and also narrated his ordeal to him.

While with Benson Idahosa, and yet recovering from the shock of his ordeal, he must have wondered what it was about the man before him, that distinguished him before armed robbers, to the extent they were so afraid of touching the man's things but not his, despite also being a Christian himself.

The leadership of the Labour Party has accused, Dr Yunusa Tanko, the campaign spokesman of its presidential flag bearer, Peter Obi, of conniving with the Nigeria Labour Congress to hijack the party.

The National Publicity Secretary of LP, Obiora Ifoh, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday.

Ifoh, who faulted Tanko for allegedly making unflattering remarks about the party, stated that he was not mandated to speak on behalf of his principal.

The growing tension between the warring parties heightened on Wednesday when Obi’s campaign team announced that the recent visit of the former Anambra governor to the LP secretariat on Tuesday was a reconciliatory move and not an endorsement as being twisted in a section of the media.

To further buttress their point, Tanko also stressed that his principal also met with the Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission in the early hours of Wednesday to seek an end to their conflict with the party.

The media has been awash with news of Obi and his supporters’ visit to the leadership of the party at the national secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday.

A few hours after his visit, a section of the media labelled the meeting as an open endorsement of the Abure-led NWC, which has been battling the NLC for validation following the contentious national convention that returned the executives to office.

We have fact-checked and found out that this was another blatant lie by the self-appointed spokesperson of Peter Obi. I must state here clearly that he does not have the permission of Obi to speak on his behalf. The expressions he made at the NLC stakeholders’ meeting and the press release were his personal views.”

Continuing, the party claimed that during his 13-year reign as the national chairman and presidential candidate of the National Conscience Party, Tanko used the position to bargain with the party in government.

“As a national chairman, his party could not produce a single councillor all through his time. “We would like to warn Tanko Yunusa to stop dropping the name of Peter Obi everywhere he goes and be man enough to stand on his pedigree when attending illegal meetings such as the one conducted by the NLC’s Political Commission.


“We are also calling on the NLC’s Political Commission to wake up from their slumber and stop constituting public nuisance with their so-called Interim Leadership. They must realize that Nigeria is a country with law and that the law does not support their actions. Since they have chosen to dance naked in the market square, we have refused to go low with them. But we only want to assure them that for every action there will certainly be a reaction.”

When our correspondent called for a reaction, a disappointed Tanko frowned at the allegations, saying he wouldn’t want to be seen having a heated debate with the party leadership.

He, however, promised to address the ‘insults’ thrown at him at the appropriate time.

“I don’t want to respond to this now. I believe the insults will be addressed at the right time,” he said.

A political ally of Tanko in the party, who craved anonymity because he had not been authorized to talk, however, stood up for him.

The source dismissed the claims, saying those close to him know he is an activist with a conscience.

He said, “If truly he wasn’t speaking the mind of Peter Obi, he would have debunked it in the last 48 hours. What are we talking about? We all know Obi for that. Let the man speak for himself instead of Abure and Obiora attacking him. Has this same Tanko not been defending the party before?



“For somebody who was a national secretary to Femi Falana and Osagie Obayuwana, a vice presidential candidate to Dele Momodu and later became the presidential candidate of NCP, Tanko has paid his dues. INEC was eventually forced to deregister the party only because they spoke truth to power.

“Tanko also came to the Labour Party long before Abure, Obiora and others who are trying to demonise him now. It is a fact. He has been there with Dan Iwuanyanwu and the late Abdulsalam. Aside from Abdulsalam, these people are still alive. Go and verify. This same Tanko was among the electoral committee that brought Peter Obi to LP in Asaba. You can also verify that.”

Obi is too soft and I doubt his competence to be president. Just small party like LP with just one gov Obi cannot handle. You have to be decisive even in the office. Obi's style of not wanting to offend anyone is not the best.

There was no 'lingua franca', so an Igbo speaking family migrating to Ijebu land meant they had to learn the Yoruba language of the Ijebu and speak it, learn the culture, observe their religion etc.

They would get there and ask them about the deities they honour, and they would be guided.

You could not take your religion and deities there. You would adopt theirs. That's how it worked.

After a decade or less, you've effectively become an indigene there. An Ijebu man, plus your kids!

Today we would call you a 'Yoruba man'!

But you're actually an ''Igbo man''!

THERE ARE LITERALLY MILLIONS OF YOU IN THIS POSITION RIGHT NOW.

IE your ancestors of just 150 to 300 years ago were immigrants from a totally different region to where you are now,.

GO AND DO A DNA TEST AND YOU WILL BE SHOCKED as a ''proud Yoruba man'' to learn that your great-great-grandad was an immigrant from Nnewi or Sokoto.

And YOU, Mr ''Proud Igbo man''.

GO AND DO A DNA TEST to find out where you really come from, ie your LINEAGE.

Or even from Sierra Leone or Congo!

Today an Igbo family can decide to migrate to Ibadan, and not bother learning to speak Yoruba for several generations, and they'll be fine, since we can all speak English.

But it was not like that in pre-colonial Nigeria.

You HAD to learn the language, and adopt the culture of your new abode, as a matter of survival.

So you true identity was your LINEAGE, not the language you were speaking at any point in time.

If LANGUAGE was what identified you in the past, that means you could be born Igbo, and by your teenage years be a Yoruba person, and by old age, an Hausa man, depending on your migratory path.

So of course it wasn't language that we identified ourselves by.

IT WAS THE EUROPEAN COLONIALISTS that created these language-based blocs, and falsely claimed that you were of the ''Igbo tribe''.

Of the ''Yoruba tribe''.

Of the ''Hausa tribe''.

Why did they do it?

So that they could create large blocs of DIVISION among you, their subjects.
