The Imo state police command has neutralised three suspected terrorists after a failed attempt to attack the Njaba divisional police station on Sunday, September 15.

In a statement released, the spokesperson of the command, ASP Henry Okoye, says the police operatives successfully repelled the attack on the Njaba Divisional Headquarters by hoodlums who arrived in three SUVs and launched a violent assault on the headquarters with sporadic gunfire.

Okoye said in response to the attack, its ever-gallant operatives swiftly took up defensive positions and engaged the assailants, resulting in the neutralization of three attackers. He said the remaining assailants, who sustained various gunshot injuries, fled into nearby bushes. During the operation, Okoye added that its forces recovered one General Purpose Machine Gun, one AK-47 rifle, and three vehicles: a Toyota Lexus 470, a Mercedes GLK, and a Toyota Venza.

InvestmentDAPPMAN Asks FG To Stop Dangote Refinery Alleged Monopoly by bcreporter(op): 8:25am On Sep 16, 2024
The group of oil marketers accused by the Vice President of Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, to have reported the Dangote Refinery to President Bola Tinubu for its low-priced product is the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketer’s Association of Nigeria, The PUNCH reports.

The association’s secretary, however, denied reporting the refinery to Tinubu in the manner Edwin described.

Last week, the Dangote official during a space session organised by Nairametrics on X claimed that the oil marketers reported the refinery to the President that the plant’s low-priced diesel was counter-productive to oil marketers’ businesses.

He also revealed that oil marketers had continued to boycott Dangote diesel and aviation fuel after the refinery crashed the price of diesel.

According to him, over 95 per cent of petroleum product importers in Nigeria are not buying products from the Dangote refinery.

He said the refinery struggles to sell about 29 tankers of diesel per day due to low patronage from local petroleum product importers.

As a result of poor local patronage, the refinery, he said, exports most of its diesel and aviation fuel.

“Petroleum product marketers in Nigeria have written to President Bola Tinubu, complaining that the refinery’s local diesel prices, which have dropped from N1,200 to N1,000 and now to N900 per litre, are negatively impacting their businesses,” Edwin stated.

Although, several petroleum marketers’ associations have issued statements debunking this claim, a copy of the letter obtained by one of our correspondents on Sunday revealed the identity of the group that was accused by the Dangote official as the DAPPMAN.

In the letter addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on July 4, 2024, the association stated that the correspondence was to highlight issues in the Downstream Petroleum Industry which require urgent intervention to engender the sustenance of deregulation and free market policies as intended by the PIA 2021.

The letter signed by its Executive Secretary, Olufemi Adewole, was titled, “An Urgent Call For The Sustenance Of Deregulation And Free Market In The Downstream Petroleum Industry In Strict Compliance With The Petroleum Industry Act 2021”.

“We write to bring to the attention of the President of The Senate, some highlights of issues in the Downstream Petroleum Industry which require urgent intervention to engender the sustenance of deregulation and free market policies as intended by the PIA 2021.

Nairaland General5 Deadliest Flood Crises In Nigeria Since 2012 by bcreporter(op): 11:41am On Sep 12, 2024
Floods are the most common and recurring disaster in Nigeria. These disasters have become part of the country’s history, causing big changes to the environment, sweeping away homes while forcing many to relocate, and even taking the lives of settlers.

The World Economic Forum says that heavy rains combined with poor urban planning have made parts of Nigeria more susceptible to flooding.

For decades, Nigerians have fought a relentless battle against this crisis. From overflowing rivers to failing drainage systems, the causes are diverse, but the impact is often devastating.

Here are the 5 of the deadliest floods Nigeria has experienced since 2012.

The 2012 Nigeria flooding

According to the NIGERIA Post-Disaster Needs Assessment 2012 Floods, heavy rains between July and October 2012 combined with rising water levels resulting from the runoff contributed to the flooding of human settlements located downstream of the Kainji, Shiroro, and Jebba dams on the Niger River; the Lagdo dam in Cameroun on the Benue River; the Kiri dam on the Gongola River; and several other irrigation dams.

In some cases, the dams were damaged; in others, water had to be released at full force to avert an overflow. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that 363 people were killed, 5,851 were injured, and 3,871,530 were displaced due to the resulting floods.

Nairaland GeneralUAE Demands ‘urgent’ Access To Telegram CEO Locked Up In France by bcreporter(op): 12:04pm On Aug 27, 2024
The United Arab Emirates announced late Monday it had asked the French government to allow consular access to Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, who is currently in police custody in Paris.

Durov, a Russian-born French-Emirati citizen, was arrested late Saturday night and is still being held as part of a probe into allegations relating to child pornography, drug trafficking and organized crime on the Telegram messaging platform, the Paris prosecutor’s office said.

“The UAE is closely following the case of its citizen Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, who was arrested by the French authorities in Paris–Le Bourget Airport, emphasizing that the UAE has submitted a request to the Government of the French Republic to provide him with all the necessary consular services in an urgent manner,” the Abu Dhabi foreign ministry said.

Durov’s arrest triggered an international outcry, with self-proclaimed free speech advocates like billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk denouncing the detention. French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday that it was “in no way a political decision” to arrest Durov.

Nairaland GeneralA Dam Collapsed In Northeast Sudan, Killing Four by bcreporter(op): 2:09pm On Aug 26, 2024
Local media have reported that the dam burst on Saturday night due to heavy seasonal rainfall in the northeast.

A dam has collapsed in northeastern Sudan as the country deals with heavy rainfall leading to disastrous floodwaters, the Federal Ministry of Health said.

The ministry said in a statement late on Sunday that the Arbaat Dam north of Port Sudan had collapsed, killing four people in the floodwaters and sweeping away homes.

It added that resources had been deployed to the area to help those stranded.

According to a local official cited by the Sudanese news outlet al-Taghyeer, the death toll could reach at least 60 people, with many more missing.

Local Ali Issa told Al Jazeera he had received a message that the people were trapped in vehicles due to the floodwater.

“There were seven lorries carrying families, elderly and children,” he said. “We came to see what had happened but were not able to get to the dam.”

Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan said the Arbaat Dam is the main water supply for Port Sudan, the Red Sea city that became the administrative capital as fighting overtook the capital Khartoum.

https://trendburst.com.ng/tinubu-to-inaugurate-n178bn-onne-terminal-next-week/

The Sudanese army has been fighting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, a war that has brought mass displacement and hardship to the people of Sudan.

Port Sudan and the surrounding area may face serious shortages of drinking water as a result of the dam collapse, Morgan said.

Local media report that the dam burst on Saturday night following heavy rains, but exact details have been difficult to gather due to mobile network outages.

Arbaat, 40km (25 miles) north of Port Sudan, is part of Sudan’s system of dams that help manage floodwaters and is where the two upper branches of the river Nile meet in Sudan.

The country has been dealing with heavy rainfall and floods since the end of June, with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) saying that the harsh weather has affected an estimated 317,000 people (56,450 families) across 16 states.

The most affected states include North Darfur, the River Nile, and West Darfur, OCHA reported.

The heavy rains have added to the worsening humanitarian crisis brought on by war.

Alongside a deepening food crisis, Sudan is also dealing with a cholera outbreak due to floodwaters contaminating the water supply.

Nairaland GeneralTelegram Dismisses Claims Against Founder Pavel Durov Following Paris Detention by bcreporter(op): 1:34pm On Aug 26, 2024
The Russian-born founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, who was detained in Paris, has nothing to conceal, and it is unreasonable to hold an owner accountable for the misuse of a messaging and social media platform, Telegram stated in a release.

Durov, a 39-year-old billionaire, was taken into custody at Le Bourget airport near Paris shortly after arriving on a private jet from Azerbaijan late Saturday.

The arrest of Telegram’s CEO led to a warning from Moscow to Paris, urging that his rights be respected, and drew criticism from Elon Musk, the owner of X, who claimed that free speech in Europe was under threat.

Telegram issued a brief statement after midnight Paris time, which didn’t disclose details of the arrest but affirmed that the Dubai-based company complies with European Union regulations and that its content moderation is “within industry standards and continually improving.”

“Telegram’s CEO Pavel Durov has nothing to hide and travels frequently in Europe,” Telegram stated. “It is ridiculous to suggest that a platform or its owner should be held responsible for the misuse of that platform.”

“We are expecting a swift resolution to this matter. Telegram stands with you all.”

Durov, who holds both French and United Arab Emirates citizenship, was detained as part of a preliminary police investigation into alleged facilitation of various crimes due to insufficient moderation on Telegram and a lack of cooperation with law enforcement, according to a French police source.

A cybersecurity gendarmerie unit along with France’s national anti-fraud police unit are heading the investigation, the source added, noting that the judge in charge specialises in organised crime.

Telegram, founded by Durov, came into existence after he left Russia in 2014 when he declined to shut down opposition groups on his VK social media platform, which he later sold.

The encrypted app, which boasts nearly 1 billion users, holds significant influence in Russia, Ukraine, and other former Soviet republics. It is regarded as one of the major social media platforms alongside Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and WeChat.

Born in Soviet Leningrad and a graduate of St Petersburg State University, Durov identifies his political stance as “libertarian” and cites Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs as an inspiration.

With an estimated net worth of $15.5 billion, according to Forbes, Durov mentioned in April that some governments had attempted to pressure him, but he believes the app should stay neutral and not become involved in geopolitics.

Durov, whose arrest made headlines in Russia, conceptualised the idea of an encrypted messaging app while under pressure from Russian authorities. His younger brother, Nikolai, developed the encryption.

“I prefer to be free rather than follow orders from anyone,” Durov remarked in April about his decision to leave Russia and find a new base for his company, which has had stints in Berlin, London, Singapore, and San Francisco.

Russian lawmaker Maria Butina, who served 15 months in a U.S. prison for operating as an unregistered Russian agent, called Durov “a political prisoner – a casualty of a Western witch-hunt.”

HealthBiontech BNT116 Lung Cancer Mrna Vaccine Clinical Trials Initiated by bcreporter(op): 8:26am On Aug 26, 2024
Currently, more Than 5 Lung Cancer Vaccines Based On mRNA Platform Are Under Clinical Trials, Says Kuick Research

A significant breakthrough in cancer treatment was achieved with the initiation of the first mRNA lung cancer vaccine trials globally. This innovative project, featuring BioNTech’s BNT116, heralds the dawn of a transformative period in the cancer therapy domain, with the potential to fundamentally change our strategies for cancer therapy. BNT116 is specifically engineered to combat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and signifies a major progression in the field of personalized medicine. This cutting-edge vaccine employs messenger RNA (mRNA) technology, akin to that used in COVID-19 vaccines. However, rather than targeting a virus, BNT116 is designed to activate the immune system to fight against cancer cells.

Global mRNA Cancer Vaccines Clinical Trials and Market Future Outlook 2024 Report Highlights:

mRNA Cancer Vaccines In Clinical Trials: > 60 Vaccines

Highest Phase Of Clinical Trials: Phase III ( 2 Vaccine)

mRNA Cancer Vaccine Clinical Trials Insight By Company, Country, Indication and Phase

First Commercial mRNA Vaccine Approval Expected By 2029

US and China Dominating mRNA Cancer Vaccines Clinical Trials: > 45 Vaccines

mRNA Vaccines For Skin Cancer Dominating Trials: > 10 Vaccines

The clinical trial, conducted across seven countries, will include around 130 patients at various stages of lung cancer, ranging from early to advanced or recurrent cases. These participants will receive the vaccine in conjunction with immunotherapy, a method aimed at optimizing the potential therapeutic outcomes. The key advantage of BNT116 lies in its ability to potentially reduce the recurrence of lung cancer. This type of cancer is well-known for its high rates of recurrence, even following what appear to be successful initial interventions such as surgery and radiation therapy. The mRNA vaccine may offer the essential enhancement required to significantly boost long-term survival rates.

This effort is not taking place in a vacuum. It is part of a larger initiative by the NHS designed to expedite patient access to clinical trials for cutting-edge cancer therapies. The medical community has recognized this strategy as a possible transformative development in the relentless fight against lung cancer, which remains one of the most lethal forms of the disease.

BNT116 represents a significant advancement in the rapidly evolving area of mRNA cancer vaccines. At present, more than 20 of these vaccines are undergoing clinical trials across the globe, with the US and China at the forefront of research and development. This international initiative highlights the vast potential of mRNA technology in the field of oncology.

As the trial advances, researchers aim to establish the effectiveness of BNT116 in preventing the recurrence of lung cancer. Should the results be favorable, it could lead to mRNA cancer vaccines being recognized as a standard treatment option globally, providing renewed hope for millions of cancer patients and potentially transforming the future of cancer treatment.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has said security is everybody’s business and urged Nigerians to provide the necessary information that would aid the security agencies in their operations.

The CDS’ advice paid off on Friday as the Nasarawa State Police Command arrested a woman in possession of anti-aircraft ammunition in Keffi Local Government Area of the state.

This is just as the acting Governor of Niger State, Mr. Yakubu Garba appealed to the Nigeria Army to redeploy its troops to communities prone to terrorist attacks in the state.

Musa said this on Saturday, in Abuja while delivering his address at the 48th Annual National Conference of the Muslim Elders’ Association of Nigeria.

The conference had the theme: “Making Living Worthwhile for All: Islamic Solutions to Economic and Security Challenges”.

Muslim Elders Association of Nigeria was created to promote peace, foster brotherhood, and enhance leadership values, education and humanitarian services.

attacks in the state.

Speaking with journalists after the 3-days Fidda’u prayer for 13 people killed by bandits in Shiroro LGA of the state, Garba said that the withdrawal of troops from Allawa and other communities had weakened the government’s efforts to tackle insecurity in the state.

The 13 victims lost their lives on Wednesday when they were ambushed by bandits on their way to their farms in Anguwan village.

“I want to appeal to our military to see reasons to go back to Allawa and other prone areas to give full security cover to our people who are predominantly farmers,” Garba said.

Garba stated that Governor Mohammed Umar Bago-led administration had deployed strategies to end insecurity, which had brought safety to commuters along Kuta, Gwada, Zumba and Erena roads in Shiroro council.

He said that those killed in the attack were displaced farmers who left the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Also speaking, the father of one of the victims, Malam Isah Allawa, said the bandits killed eight people by shooting while five others drowned in a river while fleeing the scene of the attack.

“My son Mubarak Isah is among the people killed, the bandits caught them unaware, and they separated people from Allawa and those from Kagara in Rafi Local Government Area.

“The bandits asked people from Kagara to go while those from Allawa had their hands tied to their backs before they started killing them,” he said.

Also, Murjanatu Musa, who lost her son in the attack, said the deceased was married with a daughter, adding that the deceased father was also killed in 2023 by bandits.

NAN reported that the acting governor was accompanied to the three-day Fidda’u prayer by the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umaru Farouk.

Her son, according to her, left home in 2018, leaving her to battle the people he had sold the property to.

Eunice added that his actions left an indelible mark on their lives, turning a time of mourning into a relentless cycle of betrayal and despair.

“Whenever I remember my husband’s memory, it is tainted by the thoughts and images of my two sons battling over his property. That is so unfair,” the 71-year-old woman said.

Nairaland GeneralSevilla Manager Praises Iheanacho, But Calls For Improvement by bcreporter(op): 12:58am On Aug 25, 2024
Sevilla manager, Javier Pimienta has expressed his admiration for Kelechi Iheanacho’s performance in the club’s 2-1 defeat to Villarreal on Friday night, while also emphasizing the need for improvement from the forward.

Iheanacho, who joined Sevilla as a free agent following his departure from Premier League club Leicester City, made a brief appearance as a late substitute during the match.
Despite only playing for thirteen minutes, the 27-year-old managed to make an impact, forcing Villarreal goalkeeper Diego Conde into a notable save in the closing moments.
“Perhaps he (Iheanacho) was the one who had the most problems because he played less time, but he moved very well in that difficult moment of the match and he had a very clear chance to score and the goalkeeper was able to stop that play,” Pimienta told Futbal Fantasy.

While Pimienta acknowledged Iheanacho’s impact after coming on, he also hinted at the expectation for the forward to elevate his game.

Rivers State Governor, Simi Fubara, addressed protesters on August 1st during the nationwide protests against bad governance, hunger, and hardship. The governor engaged with the demonstrators, acknowledging their right to protest and expressing empathy for their concerns.

Governor Fubara commended the protesters for maintaining a peaceful approach and assured them that their grievances were understood. "I know that you're hungry. I feel your pain," he stated. He emphasized that the state government is actively working to alleviate the difficulties faced by the citizens, and pledged to communicate their concerns to the federal government.

The governor highlighted the challenges of implementing new policies, noting that initial measures might be harsh but are aimed at achieving long-term benefits. "Support the government. In the beginning, the policy might be harsh, but at the end, everything will be fine," he explained.

Fubara also addressed the issue of potential violence, warning that some elements might attempt to exploit the protests to cause destruction. He stressed the importance of maintaining a peaceful stance and reassured the crowd that security measures were in place to prevent any disruption.

As a gesture of goodwill, the governor provided the protesters with basic provisions. He concluded his speech by encouraging patience and tolerance, promising that positive changes would come with time. "We are appealing as a government that everybody should be patient. I believe that with a little time, allowing these policies to materialize, things will be normalized," he said.

Nairaland GeneralWhat Was Something Small You Went To The Doctor For That Turned Out To Be Bad by bcreporter(op): 6:49am On Jun 20, 2024
In January of 2019 I woke up on a Saturday with a pain under my ribs/ kind of like heartburn. I have awful anxiety and thought it was a panic attack so I took half a Valium and went to my daughters basketball game. After the game the pain hadn’t gone away, so I took the other half of Valium and decided I needed to sleep off the panic attack.

By Monday night the pain still hadn’t gone away so I went to an urgent care after work. They told me it could be a gallbladder attack but didn’t think so because I was fine - I mean besides the pain I was fine. I wasn’t in horrific pain, probably a 4 on a scale of 10. But they said since I’ve had this pain for 3 days I should have an ultrasound of my gallbladder to make sure everything was ok in there. They didn’t seem too concerned at all. So I got in for the ultrasound on Wednesday, I drove myself, the pain still there but again, not awful, just annoying at this point. It was constant but got worse after I ate anything. Full story
