The International Monetary Fund has said that reliable and actionable data are crucial for harnessing the economic potential of Artificial Intelligence.

The Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, made these remarks during the Fund’s 12th Statistical Forum in Washington, D.C., in a broadcast monitored by PUNCH Online on Wednesday.

“AI has huge potential to boost growth and efficiency,” Georgieva said, noting productivity gains of up to 34 per cent in call centres, especially among new and lower-skilled workers.

However, she warned that AI could disrupt labor and financial markets and exacerbate inequality within and among societies. “At a time when many societies are already polarised, AI has the potential to destabilise them further,” Georgieva said.

The forum, which continues on Thursday, brings together policymakers, researchers, private sector representatives, and data experts to discuss how AI is reshaping economies.

The event, themed “Measuring the Implications of Artificial Intelligence on the Economy,” focuses on the need for robust and comparable statistics to guide policy making.

“To make AI a force for good that drives inclusive economic growth, we need coordinated actions by governments, the private sector, and civil society,” she added. “And to inform those actions, we need reliable, tightly accurate, and actionable data.”

Georgieva’s comments reflect growing concerns about AI’s uneven impact on global labor markets and economic stability.

Earlier this year, the IMF Chief described AI as a double-edged sword. “We are on the brink of a technological revolution that could jumpstart productivity, boost global growth, and raise incomes around the world. Yet it could also replace jobs and deepen inequality,” she said.

“The rapid advance of artificial intelligence has captivated the world, causing both excitement and alarm and raising important questions about its potential impact on the global economy.

“The net effect is difficult to foresee, as AI will ripple through economies in complex ways. What we can say with some confidence is that we will need to come up with a set of policies to safely leverage the vast potential of AI for the benefit of humanity,” Georgieva added.

At least 10 people, including three children and seven adults, lost their lives in an accident at the Abule Osun area of the Lagos-Badagary Expressway, Lagos State, on Tuesday night.

Three other persons sustained varying degrees of injuries in the accident that occurred around 11 pm.

According to a Wednesday statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the accident occurred when a Siena vehicle loaded to capacity rammed into a stationary truck along the road.

He disclosed that the investigation revealed that the Siena vehicle was on top speed without taking cognisance of the granite-laden truck, which had taken half of the road.


Oke-Osanyintolu said, “On arrival at the scene of the road traffic accident at Abule Osun, inward Iyana Iba, along Lagos-Badagry Expressway, it was discovered that a Toyota Sienna bus, registration number BDG 342 FS, laden to capacity with passengers from the Eastern part of the country was involved in a road accident with a parked SHACMAN truck, registration number unknown.

“Further investigations revealed that the truck, which was laden with granite, was parked on the road, shutting down about half of the carriageway, while the Toyota Sienna on top speed, unknowingly crashed into the parked truck from behind.

“Ten people lost their lives to the unfortunate incident, while three were critically injured. The dead passengers include three male adults, four female adults, two female children and one male child.”

He added that the injured persons were rescued by officials of the FRSC before the arrival of the LASEMA team while the deceased would be handed to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit for necessary action.

“The injured passengers reportedly rescued and taken to a nearby hospital by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps before the arrival of the agency’s LRT at the scene of the incident include; one female adult and two children (male and female).

“The accidental Toyota Sienna was recovered with the aid of the Agency’s Lite Tow Truck and towed to the FRSC station.

“The 10 commodities have been bagged, awaiting the arrival of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit for evacuation of the commodities,” the LASEMA PS said.

Justice Haleema Salman of the Kwara State High court, Ilorin, on Thursday, sentenced five suspects, who had been standing trial over the Offa bank bloody armed robbery case to death by hanging.

The robbery took place on April 5, 2018, in Offa, Offa Local Government Council Area of the state, where about 32 persons, including nine policemen, were killed.

The court held that the convicts robbed and killed innocent citizens including nine police officers in Offa during the bloody robbery attack.

However, the judgement was meant to be delivered on August 2, 2024 but was put forward because of the August nationwide protest.

The six suspects: a policeman, Michael Adikwu (now deceased), Ayoade Akinnibosun, Azeez Salahudeen, Niyi Ogundiran, Ibikunle Ogunleye and Adeola Abraham, were arrested in connection with the bloody bank robbery incident on April 5, 2018 in Offa, Kwara State.

Michael Adikwu, the leader of the robbery attack, reportedly died in police custody while the remaining five pleaded not guilty in court.

The Nigerian government has secured a $600,000 relief fund and commitments from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a flood alert to Nigerians in anticipation of water releases from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.

Umar Mohammed, the director-general of NIHSA, announced on Tuesday that regulated water releases from the dam are scheduled to commence on September 17.

According to Mohammed, the water will initially be released at a rate of 100 cubic metres per second (m³/s), equating to 8.64 million cubic metres per day. This flow rate will be gradually increased to 1000 m³/s over the next seven days. The releases are intended to prevent exceeding the River Benue’s capacity and causing major flooding in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Police, Lagos Command has arrested a police officer for manhandling an elderly woman in Alagbado area of the state.

The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has allayed fears over earth tremors experienced in Mpape, Katampe, Maitama and other areas of Abuja the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Presidency has announced the take-off of the 550 million US Dollar upstream gas project between the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (NNPCL) and TotalEnergies on development of Ubeta field.

Special Adviser (SA) to President Bola Tinubu on Energy, Olu Verheijen disclosed this at an inaugural US-Nigeria Strategic Energy Dialogue, hosted by the US State Department, in Washington, DC.

Speaking at a luncheon organised as part of the inaugural dialogue, Verheijen said the upstream gas project would deliver 350 million standard cubic feet of gas per day when operational.

A statement on the event signed by Morenike Adewunmi, Stakeholder Manager, Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, was made available in Abuja on Tuesday.

Verheijen told the gathering that major energy reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu since June 2023 focused on improving energy security, attracting investments and deepening collaboration with key partners including the the US government.

She said the key reforms had improved the viability of the gas-to-power value chain of the country.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has voiced his concerns regarding the new structure of the UEFA Champions League, highlighting the potential strain on players.

The Brazilian shot-stopper criticized the increase in the number of games, arguing that the changes have placed undue pressure on footballers and that their well-being is being overlooked.

Under the revamped format, the group stage has expanded from six to eight matches, and the extended league phase before the knockout rounds further complicates the schedule. Alisson pointed out that while the new format might be exciting for fans, the impact on players is significant.

“For the supporters, it is amazing. More games, bigger games,” Alisson acknowledged ahead of Liverpool’s return to Europe’s elite competition after missing out in 2023-24. However, he emphasized that the increased workload is taking a toll on players’ performances.

“No one asks the players what they think about adding more games, so maybe our opinion does not matter. But everybody knows what we think about having more games. Everybody is tired of that,” Alisson said, underscoring his frustration with the relentless scheduling.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended five Chinese nationals for alleged illegal mining in Ndito-Eka-Iba village, Ibieno LGA of Akwa Ibom state.

In a statement on Sunday, Dele Oyewale, EFCC spokesperson, said the Chinese nationals were arrested in August and September by the special task force on illegal mining.

He said the arrests followed credible intelligence on the illicit activities of foreign mining companies in Eket and Ibieno LGAs of the state.

“The five arrested Chinese suspects are Zhon Qinping, apprehended on 10 September, and Li Yi, Xie Bin, Chen Mou Zhou, and Chen Zeng, arrested on 29 August,” he said.
