Health / Re: Busy Mum Hacks For Fast Healthy Children’s Meals by beatstorch: 1:00pm On Aug 04, 2017

I believe in my heart that the Proverbs 31 woman had a hack, a formula or whatever meme we may call it that helped her gain popularity as the well rounded woman, model wife, mother, enterprising woman and all her many caps of success.

This is because I have a hack for busy mornings, a hack for laundry, another for getting to functions and church early, another hack for looking beautiful and fresh always and most importantly, a hack for daily bible reading and devotionals. Just google “busy mom life hacks” and world of endless possibilities awaits you!

I am going to be sharing some feeding hacks and a meal plan for children.

Feeding Hacks 101

Always have a plan

You don’t have to follow the one you pasted on the kitchen door, but you must plan your meals even if only in your head at least a day in advance, preferably, plan the weeks meals on weekends.

Cook in large batches and freeze.

Do not let your kids miss out on Jollof rice on a busy morning. You can make Jollof rice sauce as well as other soups and vegetables in large batches and freeze.

Explore!

Check out some restaurants in your area, you just might discover a wonderful restaurant that cooks delicious homemade like meals. e.g Making moi-moi from scratch is a laudable effort but if there is a store that sells delicious beans pudding in around you, buy some and freeze. Pop in the microwave for breakfast to go with your child’s favorite cereal.

Buy in bulk

Buying in bulk is cheaper but it also helps when you have needed groceries handy as at when needed.

Buy Pre-processed

If you use spices as much as I do, you will agree that dried ground spices will help you save some time you would have spent peeling ginger, turmeric or garlic.

About Her: Seun Sangoleye, CEO Baby Grubz Nigeria ®, has always been a foodie and kitchen pro.

10 important early pregnancy symptoms you must know

One of the toughest parts of trying to get pregnant has to be playing the waiting game. Here are 10 important early signs of pregnancy to look out for.
(1) BREAST TENDERNESS:

This is a tricky one, because your boobs could also be hurting due to where you are in your cycle. But having sore tatas could very well mean you’ve got a ‘bun in the oven’ too.
(2) UNEXPLAINED MOOD SWINGS:

And when I say mood swings, we mean mood swings.A lady I personally knew had a striking experience.About two weeks after her son was conceived, her husband picked up some foodstuffs on his way home from work, and he forgot the bag of spices and seasoning.(How DARE he?) Normally she wouldn’t have cared about it at all, but for some reason, she threw a full-blown temper tantrum about that seasoning he forgot,
to the point where he finally broke down and went and........

Health / 18 Important Ways To Care For Your Child’s Teeth by beatstorch: 2:18pm On Apr 24, 2017
toddler brushing her teeth

Many parents have a tough time judging how much dental care their kids need. They know they want to prevent cavities, but they don’t always know the best way to do so. Here 18 important ways to care for your child’s teeth:

Caring for your baby’s teeth

-At birth, your baby has 20 primary teeth, some of which are fully developed in the jaw.

-Even before your baby starts teething, run a clean damp washcloth over the gums to rid it of harmful bacteria.

As soon as your baby begins to grow teeth, brush them with an infant toothbrush. Use water and a tiny bit of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice). Use NAFDAC-approved fluoride toothpaste...........

Fashion / 8 Ways To Incorporate Colours Into Your Wardrobe by beatstorch: 11:41am On Apr 20, 2017
8 ways to incorporate colours into your wardrobe

nicole-chikwe dazzles in this beautiful print number

Finding the right colour, right bag, purse shoe or scarf to match your outfit is one of the many ways you can incorporate colours into your wardrobe. We have prepared 8 tips for you to incorporate colours into your wardrobe:

Make-up

Your makeup goes a long way in complimenting your look. You can use colors that accentuate with your eyes, take for example; Blue goes well with rusty brown, purple, orange, pink and different shades of blue. Green eyes on the other hand go well with purple, ashy, brown, silver and gold.
Manicures

Just as makeup can help add colour to your wardrobe, manicures can as well help add more color to your wardrobe. You can opt for brighter hues, some sparkles or nail to help compliment your outfit. Just in case you don’t know what colors would look good on you, you can ask your manicurist for help.

Scarves

There are countless options when it comes to patterns and colors that scarves can help you achieve as wearing a scarf is one of the easiest ways to add prints or colors into your wardrobe. Scarfs are inexpensive accessories.

Prints

Prints are actually one of the best ways to add texture and color to your outfit without actually looking like you’re adding texture and color to your outfit. Depending on what you’re wearing, the size of the print helps provide a stylish way of adding colour and texture. However, avoid wearing too much of one print or multiple prints, make it simple as much as you can. Avoid overpowering and unflattering................

My wife taught me a lot of things I know- Peter Okoye

Fabmum had a quick chat with award-winning artiste, Peter Okoye( Psquare) on parenting and fatherhood.

In what ways does your wife, Lola, compliment you as a father?

She taught me a lot of things that I know and I am not going to deny that. She lets me know that a little mistake can hurt a child especially when done ignorantly. She told me that when you bat an eyelid figuratively speaking in a second, your child might be prone to danger at that instant. She is more careful than I am; I can use a toothpick and drop it on the table but she will help me see reasons why I shouldn’t have do so. I am a careless person but she has corrected me and taught me so many things. For instance, I can ask my son to bring my charger upstairs but again, she will again give me reasons why I shouldn’t allow him come in contact with.....................

Fashion / 5 Cool, fun Ways To Wear Print by beatstorch: 12:04pm On Apr 11, 2017
5 cool, fun ways to wear print

There are several fun ways to wear print. From geometric, floral, mirror, or animal prints, you can’t go wrong with prints. Not only does a print outfit add some spark to your wardrobe, it is also very versatile.

Go easy on prints

Always stick to one print clothing at any time and keep the rest of your outfit plain. Whether it’s a one-shouldered dress, leggings or a waistcoat, feel free to go as colourful and bold as you like, as long as you don’t incorporate block colours into the mix. Animal prints should be teamed with black alone and you can only wear only one type of print at a time.

Fit matters

An oversized garment with an oversized print will only make you look like a stuffed pillowcase. If a fitted dress teamed with leggings are your absolute staples, invest in a pencil-thin leather belt to flatter your best assets.

Size Matters

Large prints give the impression of a greater surface area, so avoid if you are of a big boned or fat. Stick to smaller patterns instead. The smaller the print, the smaller the frame appears to the untrained eye. Choose florals with flowers that are no larger than your hand span.

The right print

Balance your one print outfit by adding accessories in contrasting colours. Pairing a loud leopard pant with solid colours keeps your look balanced. Tribal prints are one of the biggest trends this season. Mix them with similar looking prints or with touches of metallic. Either way, you can’t go wrong. When buying floral prints during the colder months, go for one with a dark base like black or navy. This will allow you to easily pair with tights, sweaters and boots without sending mixed signals.

Accesorising

-Pair a dark and moody floral outfit with a bold gold chain. Your necklace will stand out without and enhance your appearance.

– When you’re wearing patterns, simple accessories are the best option. Accessories and jewellery that are too busy will make prints look tacky.

-A vintage silver locket will be a great complement to a print dress. When selecting earrings, understated silver studs or gold earrings may work well, although more ornate earrings with matching colours can also add some visual appeal.

-Wear a belt that matches one of the colours in your dress. By contrast, black and white print dresses can work with nearly any accessory colour, but they always look............

Health / Everything You Need To Know About Fibroids by beatstorch: 4:40pm On Apr 10, 2017
Everything you need to know about fibroids

doctor examining a woman

Fibroids are tumors (abnormal growth) that grow in or on a woman’s uterus. This occurs when a single muscle cell in the wall of the uterus multiplies and grows to form a non-cancerous mass. Uterine fibroids are also called Myoma.

Causes of Fibroids

The exact cause of uterine fibroids is unclear, but there is evidence that it may be a combination of genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors. Fibroids are found in approximately 20% of women who are in their reproductive age because the growth is fueled by female hormones like estrogen. When estrogen levels drop in menopause, fibroids begin to shrink.

Fibroids and Infertility

Fibroids are very common in African-American women. Also, overweight and obese women are at a higher risk of developing fibroid compared to women with normal weight. However, the size and location of fibroids determines the impact it will have on fertility. There are three major locations for fibroid which are:

Subserosal – on the outside surface of the uterus

Intramural – within the wall/muscle of the uterus

Submucous – protruding into the uterine cavity

Most women with fibroids may conceive without difficulties, but, fibroids that are found inside the uterine cavity (submucosal), very large fibroids within the wall of the uterus (intramural), can be a threat to fertility.

Fibroids may hinder fertility in women by:

Blocking the fallopian tubes, where fertilization occurs.
Changing the shape of the cervix which may affect the quantity of sperm entering the uterus.
Preventing blood flow into the uterus which can reduce the chances of an embryo sticking to the uterus (implantation)
Leading to uterine contractions and miscarriage.

Symptoms of Fibroids

Many women with fibroids may not experience symptoms, those that do, may experience the following:

Abdominal /Pelvic pain
Abdominal mass/ Distension (especially if fibroids are large)
Heavy menstrual bleeding
Increased menstrual cramping/ pain
Menstruation that lasts longer than usual
Painful sex
Increased urination
Repeated miscarriages

Treatment for Fibroids

Before treatment, several tests will be carried out to confirm that the patient has fibroids. These tests shows the doctor a picture of the inside of woman’s uterus without surgery. Afterwards, the doctor will develop a treatment plan based on her age, the size of fibroids and overall health. Treatments can vary from medication to surgery, depending on the approach that best suits her condition.

Medications

Medications for uterine fibroids treats symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding and pelvic pains. They may help shrink fibroids but not eliminate them completely. Some of these medications are:

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Gn-RH) agonists- which blocks the production of estrogen and progesterone, thereby putting the patient in a temporary post-menopausal state.

Progestin-releasing intrauterine device (IUD) – which relieves heavy bleeding caused............

Vision warning signs at preschool age
