Health / An 86 Year Old Man Has A Perplexing Issue by bebe77: 6:43am On May 06, 2015
An 86 year old man went to see his doctor with a perplexing issue

The doctor asked him how he was feeling, and the man said, Things are great and I've never felt better.
I now have a 20 year old bride who is pregnant with my child. So what do you think about that Doc?

The doctor considered his question for a minute and then began to tell a story.

I have an older friend, much like you, who is an avid hunter and never misses a season. One day he was setting off to go hunting. In a bit of a hurry, he accidentally picked up his walking cane instead of his gun.

As he neared a lake, he came across a very large male beaver siting at the water’s edge...
He realized he'd left his gun at home and so he couldn't the magnificent creature. Out of habit he raised his cane, aimed it right at the animal as if it were his favorite hunting rifle and went 'bang bang'

Miraculously, two shots rang out and the beaver fell over dead.
Now what do you think about that? asked the doctor.
The 86 year-old said, 'Logic would strongly suggest that someone else pumped a couple of rounds into that beaver.'

The doctor replied, My point exactly.

Lol

Health / 7 Ways Your Husband Could Be Making You Sick by bebe77: 11:10pm On May 05, 2015
Though being married is generally associated with better health, all that togetherness can come with some unexpected side effects. From packing on the pounds to surprising skin conditions, here are a few ways your husband could be the root of some bizarre conditions.

1. He’s making you fat.

A study from Southern Methodist University found that people in happy marriages are more likely to gain weight over time, even controlling for factors like pregnancy. Researchers say that’s likely because if you’re single, you’re more concerned about controlling your figure to get on the dating scene. But if you’re married, you can let that slide—and that can lead to health problems if you don’t keep it under control.

2. He’s making you drink more

If your husband likes to kick back with a few beers after work, soon enough you will too. Research presented at the American Sociological Association found that married women are influenced by their husbands’ drinking patterns. Men who are married generally keep their drinking stable, but women drink more—likely because they want to keep up with their husbands. So if you marry a heavy drinker, it could lead you to consuming dangerous levels of booze, without even realizing it.

3. His beard might give you a skin disease.

A beard might give your husband an air of Paul Bunyan manliness, but it’s definitely not the most hygienic way to go. Experts say facial hair is coarser than normal hair, which means that it can trap germs that linger around men’s noses and mouths. If your husband touches his beard with dirty hands, germs are more likely to linger around his face and get him sick. And all that fuzz can mask skin conditions that can spread to loved ones—i.e. you. Make sure your husband washes his facial hair regularly and checks on the skin underneath, for your sake and his.

Health / ISIS Order Nurses To Speak Fluent English by bebe77: 2:46pm On May 05, 2015
Nurses working under ISIL must speak fluent English under strict new regulations enforced by the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. The order was announced by an Islamic State militant with a loudspeaker to residents of Taqba city.

The surprising job requirement is being implemented as the terrorist organization plans to open a ‘school of nursing’ in the Islamic State’s de facto capital Raqqa, a city in Syria about 160 kilometers east of Aleppo.

Additional candidate descriptions released by the jihadi fighters include: that prospective nurses must be under 25, have graduated from secondary school with background in science, be willing to work for ISIS institutions anywhere inside ISIS territory for at least two years after graduating, and must speak fluent English.

Graduate nurses who receive top grades and show the most promise at the school will be rewarded with places at the ISIS medical school, where they can train as better-paid doctors and surgeons.

Health / Nigeria: 13th Worst Country To Be A Mother by bebe77: 7:58am On May 05, 2015
Women in Nigeria are more than twice as likely to die in pregnancy and childbirth as women in Ghana, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Nigeria came 166th out of 179 countries in the State of the World's Mother's Report of 2015; earning a place in the last 20 countries.

An under-5 year old child born in Nigeria is also almost twice as likely to die as a child in Ghana, Botswana and Kenya.

The 10 countries showing the greatest survival divide between wealthy and poor urban children were Rwanda, Kenya and Malawi – where survival gaps have roughly doubled – as well as Cambodia, Vietnam, Peru, India, Madagascar, Ghana, Bangladesh and Nigeria.

The countries in the bottom 9 are: Chad (172nd), Cote d' Ivore (173rd), Gambia (174th), Niger (175th), Mali (176th), Central African Republic (177th), Congo (178th), and Somalia (179th).

Finally, the best country to be a mother is Norway (in 1st position). The UK and U.S were in 24th and 33rd place respectively.

Health / Xenophobia? Nigerian Doctor Sacked In South Africa by bebe77: 6:37am On May 05, 2015
A Nigerian doctor is jobless and homeless in South Africa.

Dr Sidney Essien worked in South Africa for 15 years before he was dismissed without a valid reason, disciplinary hearing or warnings. He is now suing the Gauteng department of health for R600 000.

He claims that, while working in South Africa, he was unfairly discriminated against because of his illness, narcolepsy (a chronic neurological disorder involving the loss of the brain’s ability to regulate sleep-wake cycles normally).

He also said, that his salary was decreased while he was still working for the department. In addition, the department had blocked his staff number, a number every government employee receives, effectively stemming his ability to get a job at the KwaZulu-Natal department of health.

Health / Nurse Loses Both bosom To Hospital Mix-up by bebe77: 12:16am On May 04, 2015
Nurse Elizabeth Dawes was told she had a Grade 3 invasive tumour in her breast and had a lumpectomy and bilateral breast lift at New Cross Hospital, in Wolverhampton, where she worked in the oncology department.

But four days later the 39-year-old was told she never had cancer, and had been misdiagnosed due to a ‘mix-up’ with notes.

She said, "I was very sore after the operation and shocked by the extensive scaring, so to be recalled four days later to be told none of it was necessary was truly horrendous."

Health / Health Myth Vs Health Truth by bebe77: 7:46am On Mar 14, 2015
Health Myth Vs Health Truth

I must say myths are quite delicious, backed with delightful stories, passed on from one friend to another, easy to spread and enjoy because the truth can be, well, actually boring. Here are some common myths and the...."boring" truth:

1. The main reason to brush your teeth is to remove food debris.
False. Brushing is a great way to get the gunk out of your teeth after a meal. But the real benefit of brushing is to eliminate the bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. Bacterial plaque constantly forms on teeth and gums and is one of the main causes of tooth decay and gum disease. Since plaque-building bacteria thrive on foods that contain sugars and starches, you need to brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes each time and floss once a day. If calcified plaque, known as tartar, starts to get under your gum line, it's time to head to the dentist for a professional cleaning, usually every six to nine months.

2.Once you've had a caesarean section, you'll always have to have one.

Not so. Fifty to 80 per cent of women who deliver by C-section because their labour failed to progress (known as dystocia) or their babies were in a breech position can successfully have vaginal deliveries for the next baby. This is known as vaginal birth after caesarean. There are, however, some circumstances under which a woman would always have to have another C-section; these include a vertical incision for the original C-section or extensive uterine surgery. Both can increase the risk of uterine rupture during a subsequent labour and delivery.

3. Cracking your knuckles will cause arthritis or big knuckles.

Cracking your knuckles occasionally may annoy those around you and make your joints sore, but there's no evidence that this directly causes arthritis, a disorder characterized by sore and swollen joints. If you crack your knuckles all the time, however, you could injure the cartilage and cause the joints to swell. Keep this up and eventually it may lead to degenerative joint disease, such as arthritis.

4. If you drop food on the floor and pick it up within five seconds, it's safe to eat.

The "five-second rule," or other timed variations, doesn't prevent bacteria and other germs from getting on fallen food. If you can't wash the food that has fallen on the floor, don't eat it. Sometimes adults, often jokingly, say this myth in front of children. It's important to teach children that the "five-second rule" isn't true and that they shouldn't eat food that has fallen on the floor.

5. Microwaving food destroys the nutrients -False

According to Harvard Publications, "Some nutrients break down when they’re exposed to heat, whether it is from a microwave or a regular oven. Vitamin C is perhaps the clearest example. But because microwave cooking times are shorter, cooking with a microwave does a better job of preserving vitamin C and other nutrients that break down when heated."

6. Washing your vagina with soaps, feminine washes and scented creams helps keep it fresh and clean.

False. The vagina (not to be confused with the vulva) is capable of cleaning itself. Douching with chemicals that are supposed to make your vagina smell like a field of flowers actually ends up having quite the opposite effect. They wash out all the healthy bacteria that helps your vagina stay clean and infection-free. The chemicals left behind by douches can cause irritation and even burning, and the same goes for feminine sprays. Using just warm water and your fingers is sufficient in cleaning the vagina.

7. Deodorants can cause breast cause cancer.

False. Researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), a part of the National Institutes of Health, are not aware of any conclusive evidence linking the use of underarm antiperspirants or deodorants and the subsequent development of breast cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates food, cosmetics, medicines, and medical devices, also does not have any evidence or research data that ingredients in underarm antiperspirants or deodorants cause cancer.

Health / Re: Eggs Are Safe by bebe77: 1:42am On Mar 05, 2015
fromnigeria:
aawwkei!!
yes it is true. The cholesterol in eggs do not contribute to the risk of heart disease.

Chicken eggs are high in cholesterol, but the effect of egg consumption on blood cholesterol is minimal when compared with the effect of trans fats and saturated fats.

The risk of heart disease may be more closely tied to the foods that accompany the eggs in a traditional American breakfast — such as the sodium in the bacon, sausages and ham, and the saturated fat or oils with trans fats used to fry the eggs and the hash browns.

Most healthy people can eat up to seven eggs a week with no increase in their risk of heart disease. Some studies have shown that this level of egg consumption may actually prevent some types of strokes.

But the story is different for people who have diabetes. In this ever-growing population, eating seven eggs a week significantly increases the risk of heart disease.

If you want more information, click these link or just google eggs and increase in cholesterol

Health / Eggs Are Safe by bebe77: 6:17am On Mar 04, 2015
Chicken eggs may contain contain cholesterol but several researchers have found that healthy people can eat up to 6 eggs a day without increasing their risk of heart disease.

The problem with consuming eggs is related to the oil used in frying the eggs (trans fats and saturated fats) and the accompanying meal like bacon and sausages which have a high salt content.
It is however different for diabetics who may have a slightly increased risk of heart disease.

Health / Nurse Who Recovered From Ebola Sues Hospital by bebe77: 5:23am On Mar 03, 2015
Nurse Nina was the first person on U.S soil to contract Ebola after treating the Liberian,Thomas Duncan in Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, Dallas.

Four months after recovering from Ebola, Nurse Nina is suing the parent company of the hospital, Texas Health Resources for violating her privacy by releasing without her consent videos and pictures of her when she was battling for survival and using her illness as a publicity tool to redeem the hospital's image when they had not done enough to protect her. She is worried about her health in the long-term after taking experimental drugs and her return to critical care nursing.

The lawsuit alleges that Nina did not get the training or the equipment she needed to properly protect herself when she was assigned to care for Duncan leaving her to use her discretion in deciding what personal protective equipment (PPE) to wear. In the process, she inadvertently exposed her neck and hair as she cared for Duncan. She also wore her scrubs home that day with the risk of taking home the virus.

Nina is seeking compensation but the hospital hopes to resolve the issue amicably.

Health / 1.1 Billion People At Risk Of Hearing Loss by bebe77: 10:31pm On Feb 27, 2015
WHO highlights serious threat posed by exposure to recreational noise.

Some 1.1 billion teenagers and young adults are at risk of hearing loss due to the unsafe use of personal audio devices, including smartphones, and exposure to damaging levels of sound at noisy entertainment venues such as nightclubs, bars and sporting events, according to WHO. Hearing loss has potentially devastating consequences for physical and mental health, education and employment.

Safe listening depends on the intensity or loudness of sound, and the duration and frequency of listening. Exposure to loud sounds can result in temporary hearing loss or tinnitus which is a ringing sensation in the ear. When the exposure is particularly loud, regular or prolonged, it can lead to permanent damage of the ear’s sensory cells, resulting in irreversible hearing loss.

WHO recommendations

WHO recommends that the highest permissible level of noise exposure in the workplace is 85 dB up to a maximum of eight hours per day. Many patrons of nightclubs, bars and sporting events are often exposed to even higher levels of sound, and should therefore considerably reduce the duration of exposure. For example, exposure to noise levels of 100 dB, which is typical in such venues, is safe for no more than 15 minutes.

Teenagers and young people can better protect their hearing by keeping the volume down on personal audio devices, wearing earplugs when visiting noisy venues, and using carefully fitted, and, if possible, noise-cancelling earphones/headphones. They can also limit the time spent engaged in noisy activities by taking short listening breaks and restricting the daily use of personal audio devices to less than one hour. With the help of smartphone apps, they can monitor safe listening levels. In addition they should heed the warning signs of hearing loss and get regular hearing check-ups
