To start any form of residency training in canada, you have to QUALIFY as a doctor in canada with the MCCEE (It's the equivalent of the MDCN exams for foreign graduates). Next is the MCQE1......It's all like USMLE.

The first step is to join physiciansapply.ca. Your credentials from Nigeria are evaluated and confirmed through this site (and the earlier you start, the better to avoid delays). You need to pay some money though but you have no choice.
You can't do anything without joining that site. You require it both for residency purposes and for the exams itself.

Here's the link to the site http://physiciansapply.ca. You'll find a lot of helpful information on the site

I hope you'll find this helpful
Crime / Nigerian Man Charged With Murdering His Daughter In Canada Http:///egjd4z by bebe77: 2:31am On Dec 10, 2015
A Nigerian man, Oluwatosin Oluwafemi, 39, has been charged with second degree murder nearly a year after the death of his four-year-old daughter in Calgary, Canada.

According to reports, officers and paramedics were called to the family's home at Erin Ridge Road S.E. Calgary around 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 19, 2014 to respond to a report of a girl in cardiac arrest.

When they arrived, the girl, identified as Olive Rebekah Oluwafemi, was in cardiac arrest and not breathing. She was taken to a hospital but died a short time later.

Police said the parents were not cooperative during investigations and initially said the girl had fallen down the stairs. But in January, investigators determined that Olive’s death was a homicide and not the result of play, an accident nor “medical intervention consistent with CPR.

On Wednesday, Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm with the homicide unit said Olive died as a result of blunt force injuries. “We believe there were injuries indicative of upwards of a week’s prior to the incident,” Chisholm said.

Calgary police arrested Olive’s father, in Ontario on Tuesday and flew him back to Calgary. The family had left Calgary within weeks of Olive’s death. Oluwafemi was charged Wednesday morning with second-degree murder and will appear in court Thursday.

No other charges are being considered, Chisholm said. “We were looking at all possibilities but Mr. Oluwafemi was definitely our suspect from the beginning,” he said.

Neighbours said the family was relatively new to the neighbourhood, moving in at the beginning of 2014, and kept to themselves. Olive was an only child.

Jokes Etc / Funny Video About Kicking Out Ebola by bebe77: 6:23pm On Nov 18, 2015
What does it feel like to kick out Ebola?

A music video from Sierra Leone makes it clear: pretty darn amazing. One South African publication calls it the "feel-good video of the year."

Sierra Leonean rappers Block Jones and the Freetown Uncut Collective have captured people's exuberance and relief in Bye Bye Ebola, a 3-minute song-and-dance number celebrating the country's new Ebola-free status.

In the video, people express their joy by doing the azonto, a dance craze kind of like the dougie or the nae nae.

"Thank God that it's over, no time for the haters," sings Block. "Now watch me do azonto!"

This part is probably the most heartwarming. Everyone — and we mean everyone — gets down, from nurses and burial teams at Ebola treatment centers to the military and the media. Even President Ernest Bai Koroma makes a cameo, flashing the "V for victory" sign.

Although it's not certain that Ebola won't ever return to Sierra Leone, for now, the country, which has endured 3,955 deaths from the virus, is thrilled to be saying bye-bye.

I guarantee you will laugh after watching this video

Health / The New STD You Have Never Heard Of by bebe77: 8:41pm On Nov 17, 2015
The science world is buzzing with news of a new STD that was previously overlooked. From what I read, it's possible the STD is in Nigeria too.

A publication in the International Journal of Epidemiology sheds light on the 'new' STD called Mycoplasma genitalium, a.k.a. MG, a bacteria that can live in the urinary and genital tracts.

MG was first isolated by scientists in the 1980s.

Majority of women who have it experience bleeding after sex; some have unusual vaginal discharge, lower pelvic pain, pain during sex, and bleeding between periods.

To learn more about MG, researchers at University College London decided to analyze data from Britain's third National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles, which was a survey of more than 15,000 women and men ages 16 to 44. Participants in that survey answered questions about their sexual habits, history of STDs, and current STD symptoms.

They found that, for both genders, there was a strong association between MG and the number of sexual partners and unsafe sex someone had had in the last year. The scary part: 56 percent of the women who tested positive for MG reported having no STD symptoms (like vaginal discharge and pain during sex). However, they were more likely to experience bleeding after sex.

The researchers also took urine samples from 205 16- and 17-year-olds who reported never having had vaginal, anal, or MouthAction, and the results all came back negative for MG. Those who reported only having had MouthAction also tested negative for MG. That's why they now believe MG is transmitted sexually.

So what can you do to protect yourself? Use condoms.

As for getting diagnosed with MG, the researchers say that there is evolving technology that allows people to be tested for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and MG at the same time—and they're hoping this soon becomes the standard test in hospitals.

Crime / Fake Nigerian Doctor Arrested In South Africa by bebe77: 8:52am On Nov 16, 2015
A Nigerian man, Aberie Nwafor has been arrested in South Africa for using fake qualifications to practise as a “doctor” in a government hospital for years.

Nwafor was said to have arrived in South Africa 15 years ago and was arrested Nov. 6 for using fake qualifications to find a job as a doctor at a Limpopo government hospital.

Nwafor's wife, Amara was also arrested and he was found in possession of 14 fake passports.

Last Monday, he appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate Court on charges of fraud, corruption and violation of South African immigration laws.

Reacting to Nwafor's court appearance, Dr Sizeka Maweya of the South African Medical Association (Sama) warned the problem was widespread.

Maweya said: “The Health Professional council is failing us, now we check those foreign doctors from countries such as Nigeria personally, but the problem is that we don’t have capacity, but now SAMA (South African Medical Association) has said ‘let us be the ones who vet them, because we understand the trade’.”

Maweya said Sama had in the past helped the health department to remove two Nigerian “doctors” suspected of using fake qualifications from the Musina hospital and in Waterberg, also in Limpopo.

Limpopo Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba put the blame on Health Professional Council officials for failing to properly vet these “doctors”.

“Most of these foreign doctors know nothing, even some nurses are better than this foreign doctors,” Maweya claimed.

Health / NEW: Tapeworm Can Cause Cancer In HIV, Immunocompromised Patients by bebe77: 7:01am On Nov 05, 2015
For the first time, cancer cells originating from a common tapeworm have been found inside a patient with HIV.

The unique case, detailed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), suggests that a dwarf tapeworm, Hymenolepis nana, may cause tumors in people with weakened immune systems.

The patient described in NEJM first came to the CDC's attention in 2013. Doctors in Colombia had done biopsies on tumors found in the 41-year-old's lungs and lymph nodes. The tumor cells were puzzling: they grew rapidly like cancer cells, but lab analysis suggested that the cells weren't human. When the CDC got ahold of the biopsy samples, researchers there found an even weirder trait: the cells were quite small.

It took years of tests for researchers to find Hymenolepis nana tapeworm DNA in the cells. Unfortunately, doctors didn't have enough time to treat the patient with medication to fight the tapeworm. The patient died from kidney failure just three days after the discovery was made.

Normally, these tapeworms don't cause major problems in their hosts. People all over the world get infected with the Hymenolepis nana tapeworm, either by eating food contaminated with the worm's eggs or by ingesting insects that are carrying the worm. For people with healthy immune systems, the tapeworm usually stays in the gut and doesn't cause any symptoms or health issues.

In order for a Hymenolepis nana tapeworm to grow inside a human, the worm's larvae burrow into the lining of the intestines to morph into adult form; it's similar to how a caterpillar transitions into a butterfly — with the human gut serving as the cocoon. While the tapeworm larvae are inside the intestinal lining, the immune system somehow prevents the parasite from invading the rest of the body.

But in patients with HIV, the compromised immune system isn’t telling the parasites to stay in the gut. "These parasites take cues from the immune system, but in the absence of those cues, things go awry.

That means the larvae likely traveled through the patient using the series of vessels that carry fluids throughout the body — this is called the lymphatic system. And traveling with the larvae were tapeworm stem cells, which probably lodged themselves in other parts of the body. This patient was just unlucky enough to have at least one tapeworm whose cells started growing out of control.

Hymenolepis nana tapeworms are fairly common throughout the world, infecting up to 75 million people at any given time. Children are much more likely to get infected, as well as those in developing nations, where sanitation levels may be low. Muehlenbachs hopes that doctors in these regions especially will learn about this particular case study, so that they will keep an eye out for a similar rare event. It's possible that tapeworm medication may get rid of the cancer cells, as well as certain forms of chemotherapy — but doctors will only know for sure if they see such an infection again.

Health / Medical Students To Spend 7 Years In School (previously 6 Years) by bebe77: 12:09am On Nov 03, 2015
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has extended the training of doctors in universities to seven years (was formerly six years).

Executive Secretary of NUC, Professor Julius Okojie, presented the reviewed curriculum to the stakeholders at a three-day capacity development programme for staff of medical schools in Nigerian universities.

He said the new benchmark minimum academic standard was competency-based and would substantially address most of the challenges institutions in the country face in training doctors.

Okojie noted that those that people trust their lives must be adequately trained and competent to discharge their responsibilities efficiently.

He said the workshop was to enable the stakeholders brainstorm as well as fine- tune the draft document.

The curriculum review was necessitated by the fact that the frontier of knowledge in all academic disciplines had been advancing with new information generated as a result of research. Other compelling reasons included the need to update the standard and relevance of university education in the country as well as to integrate entrepreneurial studies as essential new platforms that would guarantee all graduates from Nigerian universities the knowledge of appropriate skills, competences and dispositions that would make them globally competitive and capable of contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

Okojie said: "We must built some good quality hospitals and make facilities available for the students who are coming out with competences and skills to work. No doctor would want to work without equipment. "We are trying to look at it from holistic view. Good learning and teaching environment; good medical centres and the management of resource."

Crime / Mother Attempts To Drown Her Baby To Marry Ex-lover by bebe77: 9:52am On Nov 02, 2015
A three month old baby girl has survived a five-hour death scare in a water-logged septic tank in alleged drowning attempt by her own mother at Abirem in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region.

Twenty-three year old Attaa Adomah had dumped the child in the unused tank so she could marry her former boy-friend who has just returned from abroad.

A timely response by parents, community leaders and police led to rescue of the baby who is now on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Doctors say the baby who is currently recuperating at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital is out of danger after three hours in man-hole.

Information available to Nhyira News indicates unemployed Adomah left home in the afternoon on Friday with one mission; to end the life of her 3-month old baby.

The child whose father has denied responsibility has become a stumbling block to prospects of re-uniting with her returnee boyfriend with whom she has a four-year old male child.

About one and a half kilometers from their Abirem home in the Kwabre East District; Adoma dumped the baby in an unused septic tank at Abirem New Site.

Her curious parents were alarmed by her explanations that the baby had gone missing, reported the matter to Assemblyman for the area who in turn informed police at Kenyase.

Nhyira News sources say Adomah initially denied knowledge of the child’s whereabouts but later led police to the scene where the baby was retrieved at about 9 p.m, five hours after it has been dumped there.

She is now asking for forgiveness.

Kenyase District Commander, DSP Emmanuel Adu Boahene, who confirmed the incident, says investigations have begun into the matter.

Crime / Angelic Valle, "The Woman Who Danced Unclad" Has A History Of Mental Illness by bebe77: 2:48am On Oct 31, 2015
Angelic Isabella Valle, 23 is facing lewd and lascivious conduct charges after pouring ketchup on her naked body at a Miami Beach Johnny Rockets restaurant.

The incident was reported Oct. 9 at the restaurant at 728 Ocean Drive.

Video of the incident was posted on social media, and a be-on-the-lookout was issued for the woman's arrest. Miami Beach police arrested Angelic Isabella Valle on Thursday on charges of lewd and lascivious behavior, incite to riot, indecent exposure and disorderly conduct.

Valle burst into tears when she appeared in bond court Friday. A Miami-Dade County judge set her bond at $3,000.

Valle's father also appeared in bond court, telling the judge that his daughter has a history of mental illness. The judge ordered that Valle undergo a mental evaluation.

According to an incident report, Valle walked to the second floor of the building and began spitting down. Police said she came down the stairs topless and began turning over tables and chairs.

A witness said Valle's eyes were open wide, and she was laughing and breathing heavy.

According to police, Valle placed a steel chair leg into her buttocks while a group of men surrounded her outside the restaurant. They said other customers ran off.

"The city of Miami Beach has allocated a lot of resources to improve the lifestyle on Ocean Drive and this is something that will not be taken lightly," Miami Beach police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said.

Valle is also accused of charging at several men in the crowd and taking off the lower part of her bikini. Police said she laid naked on a table and poured ketchup on herself while dancing.

A witness told Valle that the cops were coming and she grabbed a towel and left, telling the crowd, "Look me up on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook," police said. She later came back with clothes on for her shoes and bag, but left again before officers arrived.

According to the report, Valle caused $420 in damage at the restaurant by breaking two tables and two glasses.

Valle posted the following message on her Facebook page Thursday afternoon: "Ya'll saw a Jamaican woman. Listen to Vybz Kartel and he'll explain why I did what I did."

Kartel is a Jamaican reggae artist who is serving a life sentence for murder.

Police are still searching for a man involved in the incident, who is believed to be in his 20s. He is also wanted on lewd and lascivious charges, because cellphone video shows him touching Valle's vagina while she was lying on a table.

Crime / Disturbing Video Of An Officer Assaulting A School Girl In Class by bebe77: 11:09pm On Oct 28, 2015
Videos circulating online show a female student at Spring Valley High School in South Carolina being pushed to the ground by a school resource officer in a violent confrontation.

In the video, a man in uniform is seen grabbing the student- a black girl, by the arm and the neck before dragging her out of her desk and shoving her to the ground.

Ben Fields, the officer involved has a history of using excessive force and racial profiling. He has been fired for his actions.

From reports, the girl was disturbing the class and was asked by her teacher and vice-principal (also black) to leave but she refused. The teacher and Vice-Principal then called for the officer who took drastic action.

The incident, filmed by several other students in the class, took place earlier this week.

One classmate described the victim as "shy" and did not know the victim's name. Another classmate, Niya Kenny, 18 (a black girl) who videoed the incident was arrested for "disturbing" and released on a $1000 bail.

Columbia Mayor Steven Benjamin said in a statement about Monday's incident, “We cannot and will not accept this kind of behavior from any law enforcement officer and I firmly believe we need an independent investigation to get to the bottom of this incident and see that justice is done.

RIP to the deceased.

If the story is as accurate as told by the plantiff, she really has a strong case, and the defendants are on a long thing. This one is not one to blame the goverment for o. If true, it is a clear case of negligence, esp with the "tele-medicine" and unavailability of senior doctors who apparently were supposed to be on ground. I pity the juniour doctor, he will unfairly get blamed by those who dont know how it works.

But one cannot really judge well until one hears from both sides of the party. There are always at least 2 sides to every story.

My personal rule is "never allow a patient who left the comfort of their home to come to hospital at night go back home until at least in the morning, even the patient only complained of a pimple. The night is long. Even when the patient insists, I aint letting them go, unless they have signed a written document stating that they are leaving against medical advice."

The medical job is too delicate. You must always think of the possibilty of a suit for every action you take on the job. No one publishes the thousands of lives saved, only the ones you could not save. You've got to be perfect, or pray your slips doesnt result in death of a patient.

You are so right. I don't think the junior Doctor is to blame

I think identifying what you are allergic to and avoiding it may mark the end of this condition.

Health / New Study: Women Can Eat A Light During Labour by bebe77: 7:19am On Oct 26, 2015
For years, women have been told it's dangerous to eat during labor, both for them and their baby. But a new study suggests that may not be true, and that a light meal could be a good thing.

Moms who have been through labor say fasting their way through the ordeal didn't seem adequate.

For generations, the rule was "no food or liquid" because of risk of inhaling it into the lungs -- especially under general anesthesia. But anesthesia has changed. And now anesthesia is typically an epidural or spinal block.

The rules that have been in place about eating and drinking during labor were intended for practices that have been outdated for generations, agreed Dr. Taraneh Shirazian, an obstetrician at NYU Langone Medical Center.

"They are practices that don't affect the vast majority of women," she said.

A study by the American Society of Anesthesiologists now shows most healthy women would benefit from a light meal during labor.

Researchers analyzed hundreds of recent studies and concluded that moms in labor need the same kind of energy and calories as marathon runners. When they don't get it, their bodies turn to fat for energy.

That can reduce contractions, leading to longer labour and lower health scores in newborns.

"In low-risk women some drinking, mild fluids, light meal is okay, " said Dr. Shirazian.

The revised advice should mean most moms come out of the delivery room feeling only pangs of love, not hunger.

Not every obstetrician will be quick to change protocols. But experts say, it should allow for a conversation before the baby's due date about each woman's particular situation, health and risk factors for eating and drinking in the hospital.

Sounds like a case of allergy because the blocked nose occurs only during the rainy season (Allergic Rhinitis). There's likely a trigger factor. Do u also sneeze?
You need to see a doctor to have a discussion and identify the likely trigger factor so you can avoid/ control your exposure to it.

However, an anti-histamine like Loratadine could be helpful to control your body's response (note- this is not a prescription, I'm just giving you an idea of what could be wrong). Don't be too worried

See a doctor and it does not have to be a specialist. If a general practitioner can't handle it, he will refer you to a specialist.

Health / Saudi Detained 2 Nigerian Females For Trafficking 'pain Killers' by bebe77: 6:47pm On Oct 19, 2015
Whenever I hear drug trafficking, I usually think hard drugs like cocaine or heroin so imagine my surprise when I read Saudi authorities detained two Nigerian females for drug trafficking, and the drug involved was TRAMADOL...wow!

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan on Monday, the Secretary, Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Adeleke AbdulKareem, disclosed that the females (both from Oyo state) were a part of this year’s Hajj and were detained by the Saudi Arabian authorities for a drug-related offence. Abdulkareem added that one of them escaped while the other was still in detention. However he didn't mention the quantity of painkillers involved.

In Saudi Arabia, Tramadol is a contraband substance while in the USA, the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) lists Tramadol as a Schedule IV Controlled Substance. Doctors are allowed to prescribe the drug but must document properly on the patients because the drug could be addictive.

Examples of other Schedule IV drugs include Valium, Xanax, and Ambien.

In Nigeria, doctors prescribe Tramadol to manage pain and in some cases arthritis. So it is probable that the women had a prescription for the drugs.

Therefore, I think the women can't be blamed if Hajj officials failed to inform them some prescribed medication are not be allowed in Saudi. They should also have been given a list of those medications to avoid troubles as this.

But if they planned to sell the drugs, they must be regretting that decision now. My advice--know where you're planning to visit thoroughly.

Health / Nigerian Doctor, Freeman Osonuga Could Be The First Black African In Space by bebe77: 5:22am On Oct 18, 2015
No black African has ever been in space but that could change soon.

Freeman Osonuga, a Nigerian doctor, recognized for his work as an Ebola volunteer, has been shortlisted as one of three young leaders to win an all-expense paid trip to space organized by London-based talent agency Kruger Cowne in partnership with One Young World and Xcor Space Expeditions.

The plan is to send the selected leader to space putting this person in the global spotlight to help lead and promote issues of global importance.

The trip, which can cost up to $100,000 and is scheduled for 2016 will last for about one hour and before the trip, the winner will undergo G-Force training in the Netherlands to prepare them for their experience outside earth.
As an undergraduate and without significant financial support, Osonuga started his Heal the World Foundation which now provides free medical care to orphans and children with disabilities.

Osonuga is up against Keren Jackson of Ireland and Hussain Manawer of the United Kingdom. These three finalists will be flown to Bangkok next month where they will attend the One Young World Summit and also deliver a keynote speech on their topic of choice to the thousands of delegates present as well as a panel of global business leaders after which the winner of a space trip will be announced.

“If selected, I will be making Africa proud as the first black African to go to space thereby making history in the process,” Osonuga told Quartz. “Going to space is not the overall objective of the project. It is to be able to raise global conversations on issues that affect us all as inhabitants of planet earth such as climate change, global peace and poverty.”

White South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth is widely acknowledged as the first African to go to space after a trip back in 2002.

It is not certain that Osonuga would in fact be the first black African, as South African DJ Mandla Maseko, is also in the running after winning a different talent competition in late 2013. But his mission has been pushed forward to sometime in 2016.

Health / Doctor Caught Watching Child Pornography At Work by bebe77: 1:37pm On Oct 13, 2015
Consultant cardiologist Dr Steven Burn, 53, was arrested after IT staff found 65 indecent images of children on his work PC while investigating if it had been infected by a computer virus.

Some of the children featured were said to be as young as seven, while Dr Burn had also downloaded Japanese "Hentai" animated pornographic images and made Google searches under the headings "bestiality", "little Asian girls", "little Japanese girls" and "beautiful little boys". When his computer was confiscated and analysed, specialists found it had 31 indecent images of children and 34 prohibited images of children. They included realistic 3D graphics of adults engaging in penetrative sexual activity with young girls.

At the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service, Dr Burn's excuse was that he had been struggling to obtain funding for the cardiology unit at the hospital, but his efforts were being hampered by NHS bureaucracy which he claimed left him "withdrawn, isolated and inadequate". He said he turned to trawling porn websites "to block things out".

The disciplinary panel said the doctor's fitness to practise was impaired - but suspended him 12 months after he pleaded to be allowed to resume his 28-year career, saying he would "rather die than reoffend".

Before his 12-month suspension expires, Dr Burn must attend a review hearing although the panel didn't think he had put his patients at risk.

Shocking? YES.

Health / Nigerian Doctor Turns Drug Dealer In Dallas by bebe77: 8:23pm On Oct 12, 2015
Dr Theodore Okechuku, 58 is in big trouble in Dallas over his role in an illegal drug clinic operation.

Okechuku, a licensed anesthesiologist, is being accused by Federal authorities of being part of a drug trafficking ring. They say Okechuku conspired with drug dealers by handing out prescriptions of the painkiller hydrocodone for cash payments, often without examining the patients. The dealers then sold the drugs on the street for a profit.

Vans loaded with homeless people pulled up one after another in front of his Lake Highlands clinic. Armed guards patrolled the entrance. And patients handed cash through bars guarding a “caged cash room” at the clinic, they said.

Several of his associates have already pleaded guilty to their role in the alleged conspiracy, including his business manager, Ignatius Ezenagu. The business raked in more than $530,000 during the first eight months of 2014 according to prosecutors.

Okechuku rarely saw patients during their brief visits to his clinic, which had few, if any, examination tables or therapy equipment, according to prosecutors. That job was delegated to Elechi Oti, a physician’s assistant, or to Emmanuel Iwuoha, who did not have a medical or nursing license in Texas.

In December 2013, Okechuku was arrested for similar charges but was released from federal custody after posting $50,000 bail. Months later, he proceeded to write about four times as many illegal painkiller prescriptions as before, federal authorities say.

Dr Okechuku received his medical degree from the University of Lagos in Nigeria in 1980 and his Texas medical license in 2000.

A federal judge ordered Okechuku to prison until his trial.

Hmmm..... When will people learn.
