The complainant was a Mr. Buhari, a neighbor who felt offended. Agreed, the dog owner has the legal right to name his pet any name, fine, the northerners are easily offended (which I find appalling), but incitement to disturb the peace is a serious one.

According to the report, the man not only named his dog 'Buhari', his neighbor's name ( probably they were best of enemies), he wrote it on both sides of the dog -- that's overly mischievous, and a threat to public peace.

The location matters (he has a neighbour by that name). I remember naming my dog Hitler in the mid 90s (thinking he will be fierce, dog was as timid as a mouse . . . ended up being stolen and eaten by some neighbour), but that was in Ibadan, it would have been f00lish and insensitive to do that in a Jewish community, German community, even anywhere in Europe, or have a jewish neighbour.

We need to learn to live with each other in peace, even we think twice before naming our kids, checking to see how it will be perceived, that does not mean we do not have a right to.

It is not everything you have a right to, that you exercise your right on.

BTW, I think this should be a civil case, and the guy shouldn't be behind bars for over a week now, but this is a reflection of our immature justice system, that protects only the rich or influential.

Actually the police have a case of breach of public peace if it is found that the suspect has done this to provoke his neighbors.

And yes the police can actuly hold him seeing as some criminals parading themselves as been offended have threatened to kill him if he is released on bail. He is being held for his protection.

anything cheque is an unconditional order, the bank cannot but carry out the order. that's why it's criminal to issue a dud-cheque, when you stand as a guarantor, the finance house has no business chasing the debtor, they just tell you to fulfill your pledge(standing in for the primary debtor), even if they can get the debtor's location, they need not go for him but you, in this case, the guarantor already issued a cheque to that effect.
You think guarantee is something you can just dodge? ask yourself why most financial institutions prefer it as a form of security than even the debtor's asset?

The coy need not inform you to effect payment of the debt whenever the debtor defaults.
Also, have you been communicating through mail before you reconfirmed your pledge through mail?
Let your lawyer seek for a way to extract an undue influence from the case, you will use that in court.
stopping the cheque that was legitimately issued for a legitimate transaction(guarantee) is criminal, the coy will charge you, you pay the amount, and still pay a fine plus cost of litigation of the defendant.
If you can, clear the account(still criminal, but the company might think of talking to you instead of filling a suit), you accept responsibility for the loan and if possible, renegotiate the terms.
Get police to help in tracking the guy, extradite him back to nigeria, then you file a suit through the state(police) to collect your cash and other expenses.
you can't go to the embassy, they relate with the state(government), not individual.
