Politics / Biafra: Asari Dokubo Slams Ezeife For Backing Nnamdi KANU, IPOB by BeeBeeOoh(m): 11:01pm On May 07, 2022
Former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, has lambasted erstwhile Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, for backing Nnamdi Kanu and the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Dokubo described Ezeife as a useless old man for supporting Kanu and IPOB.

Speaking on Facebook Live, the former militant leader accused Ezeife of “playing politics”.

According to Dokubo: “Old useless men like Ezeife who are playing politics, at this old age, when they are at the train station to leave. I used to love him; I used to invite him for my programme. He was somebody I love so much. But for him to be justifying this evil, I feel sorry for his old age.

“The Yoruba elders and Pa Edwin Clark that are meeting together, why did they not ask Sunday Igboho and his Yoruba Nation secessionist to adopt the same strategy that Nnamdi Kanu has adopted in Igboland?

“Why will they recommend one strategy for you in Igboland, to destroy Igboland, and they practice another strategy in Lagos, in Ota, in Ibadan? ‘Yes, Eastern Security Network (ESN) is the best internal security’, and you are clapping for him (Kanu).”

Travel / Azman Halts Operations As Airlines Begins Nationwide Shutdown by BeeBeeOoh(m): 10:49pm On May 07, 2022
Azman Air has announced an indefinite suspension of its flights across the nation.

This is in compliance with the directive of the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) to shut operations over hike in aviation fuel.

The opr

While one of the AON members, Ibom Air, said it would continue normal operations, Azman Air announced the suspension of its flights, with effect from Monday.

The airline is owned by the President of AON, Alhaji Abdulmunaf Yunusa Sarina, who briefed the press on the development on Friday.

The statement read, “In compliance with the verdict of Airline Operators of Nigeria to discontinue operations Nationwide starting from Monday May 9th, 2022; Azman Air Management will like to inform its Esteemed Passengers that all our domestic operations are now SUSPENDED till further notice.

“The situation leading to this difficult decision is truly a pathetic one and we pray there is a quick intervention to restore the sustainability of Air Transport in Nigeria. We will like to kindly appeal to all our passengers to persevere with us during this tough times while we regret all inconveniencies caused. Hopefully, we will see you again soon.”

The Federal Government had appealed to the airlines not to suspend operations.

Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, made the appeal, saying though the issue of fuel supply is not within the purview of the Ministry, it would engage with agencies, institutions and individuals in position to provide succour to the airlines..

Phones / No Approval To Increase Voice, SMS, Other Tariffs By Network Operators - NCC by BeeBeeOoh(m): 10:28pm On May 07, 2022
The Nigerian Communications Commission has said that no approval has been granted Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to increase tariffs.

The reaction is following agitation by telcos under the umbrella of Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON).

This was contained in a statement signed by Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde Director, Public Affairs of the Commission.

Telcos have decried high cost of running their operations and seek to raise tariff due to 40 per cent increase in cost of doing business.

ALTON proposed an upward review of the price of calls from N6.4 to N8.95, while the tariff fir SMS will increase from N4 to N5.61 according to a letter sent to the regulator.

“Given the state of the economy and the 40 per cent increase in the cost of doing business, we wish to request an interim administrative review of the mobile (voice) termination rate for voice; administrative data floor price, and cost of SMS as reflected in extant instruments,” ALTON had said.

But the regulator acknowledged the letter and said consistent with international best practice and established regulatory procedures, the NCC ensures its regulatory activities are guided by regular cost-based and empirical studies to determine appropriate cost for services delivered.

The NCC said, “The Commission ensures that any cost determined, as an outcome of such transparent studies is fair enough as to enhance healthy competition among operators, provide wider choices for the subscribers as well as ensure sustainability of the Nigerian telecoms industry.

“For the avoidance of any doubt, and contrary to MNOs’ agitation to increase tariffs for voice and Short Messaging Services (SMS) by a certain percentage, the Commission wishes to categorically inform telecoms subscribers and allay the fears of Nigerians that no tariff increase will be effected by the operators without due regulatory approval by the Commission.

“It is noteworthy that tariff regulations and determinations are made by the Commission in line with the provisions of Sections 4, 90 and 92 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003, which entrusts the Commission with the protection and promotion of the interests of subscribers against unfair practices including but not limited to; matters relating to tariffs and charges.”

The Commission admitted the telcos have justifiable reasons to demand the review of tariffs adding, “current tariff regime being administered by the service providers is a product of NCC’s determination both for voice and SMS in the past.”

NCC noted that operators do not have rights to review the charges without recourse to regulatory standards.

The NCC explained, “It should be noted that they are not allowed to do such either individually or collectively without recourse to NCC, following the outcome of a cost study. This is not the case for now.

“Through NCC’s commitment to engendering healthy competition among the licensees, the cost of services has been democratised and become more and more affordable for Nigerian subscribers. The regulator is even more committed to this cause to ensure subscribers get greater value for money spent on telecom services.”

A.M Linus, a Sergeant of the Nigerian Army, alongside his wife, were killed on their way to Imo State on Saturday.

Details of the attack were not clear as of the time of this report, but Daily Trust gathered that they were targeted because they were military personnel.
