“The police and DSS especially have been charged to step up their efforts and capacity in this regard.

“Our law enforcement agencies must, at all times, stay ahead of bandits and criminals, wherever they are across the country, by efficiently gathering, sharing and acting on credible Intelligence. I am assuring that we will give them all the support needed to succeed.

“Let me also assure that all persons arrested so far, including those arrested for illegally possessing arms, will be duly prosecuted. I urge judicial officers to be alive to their responsibilities in this regard, to enable the speedy dispensation of justice.”

Politics › Let's Handle Herdsmen And Farmer's Violence With Open Mind - VP Osinbajo Says by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:20am On Feb 13, 2018
Finding solutions to the perennial crises between herdsmen and farmers in several communities in Nigeria could only be achieved if the issue is approached with an open mind, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has said.

The vice-president, who is leading a presidential committee to find solutions to the crises, said unless everyone concerned viewed all the issues in the matter objectively, it would be difficult to find lasting solutions to the problem.

Osinbajo, who spoke through Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi that represented him during a fact finding mission to Benue State Monday, commiserated with the government and people of the state, saying the New Year Day killings and subsequent ones stood condemned.

“We are here to tell you that we feel your pains because whatever happened to Benue may affect other ethnic groups in Nigeria. That is why in the national economic council meetings, the issue of farmers and herdsmen’s crises were discussed extensively after which an agreement was reached that a nine-man committee to be set up to proffer sustainable solutions to the crisis between the two bodies,” he said.

According to the vice-president, as part of the efforts to resolve the crises, a sub-committee was raised to visit the four most affected states including Benue, Taraba, Kaduna and Plateau to interact with the people and get their views.

“We have heard the presentation of the Benue people and shall also try to hear the presentation of the herdsmen so that sustainable resolutions could be found,” Umahi, his representative said, adding: “The herdsmen/farmers crises is not a Benue problem alone but a national problem, which requires national attention and solutions.”
He clarified the cattle colony policy of the federal government, saying that states could not be forced to give up their land except they buy into the programme.

Receiving the delegation, Governor Samuel Ortom thanked the committee for coming to the state.
He appreciated the committee for choosing the state as its first port of call and expressed optimism that the visit would afford its members opportunity to see things for themselves.

“We choose the path of peace in a civilized way to tackle the crisis even when Fulani herdsmen are killing our people like chickens,” he said, adding: “We remain committed to this cause in ensuring that we live in peace. We must not accept the total deceit that is going on in the country.”

Ortom said the anti-open grazing law started smoothly until Miyetti Allah issued a threat, which was actually carried out by them. “Therefore, l want to urge the committee to work assiduously to bring justice to Benue,” he stated.

The President-General, Mzoh U Tiv, Chief Edwin Ujege, who spoke on behalf of Benue socio-cultural groups, said the people of Benue State wanted peace and the protection of the lives and property in accordance with Nigerian constitution.
According to him, since the crisis started in 2011 in Benue State, well over 2,000 people have been killed including women and children with property worth N95 billion destroyed.
He said the federal government must uphold the anti-open grazing law enacted by the Benue State government.

Missing Policeman Found Dead

Meanwhile, a police officer who went missing in the state on Saturday has been found dead, locals told PREMIUM TIMES Monday.
The officer, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was amongst the four riot police officers that went missing following an ambush on their patrol vehicle in Logo Local Government Area on Saturday.

The incident occurred in Tse Akpam village, near Azege town around 3:00 p.m. Saturday while the officers were returning from a peace-building mission in remote villages, Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni told PREMIUM TIMES.

The remains of the officer, said to be a sergeant, were found in the bush on Monday morning and had been deposited at a morgue in Anyiin, another town in Logo LGA, locals said.

Suspected Headsmen Kill 2 Civil Defence Men

Two operatives of the Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) and one of the missing police riot policemen missing since Sunday in Logo have been confirmed killed.

The two NSCDC operatives were killed during an attack on their patrol team at Awange after Kasseyol Village in Guma Local Government area of Benue State.
The Public Relations Officer of the Benue State Command of the NSCDC, Mr Adakole John Peter, confirmed the incident, saying both men were killed when herdsmen stormed the village about 5pm Monday and attacked their team.

Politics › Assassination Attempt: FG Drags Dino Melaye To Court For False Information.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 11:30am On Feb 11, 2018
The federal government has filed a two-count charge against the Senator representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, Dino Melaye, for allegedly giving false information to the police in relation to a claim he made April 17 of an attempt on his life.

The charge sheet marked: CR/106/18, which was made available to journalists during the weekend, was filed on January 31 this year before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Maitama by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).

In the charge, Melaye was accused of falsely incriminating the Chief of Staff to Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, Edward Onoja David, in his assassination attempt claim.

He was also accused of deliberately giving false information to the police to frame Governor Bello’s Chief of Staff as the mastermind of the assassination attempt on him at his hometown in Ayetoro-Gbede in Kogi State in April last year.

According to the charge, the police discovered the alleged falsehood in Melaye’s claim while investigating the Senator’s allegation that some individuals attempted to assassinate him.

In the second count, Melaye was accused of making false statement of facts in a phone conversation with Mr. Mohammed Abudu Abubakar, a son of the late former governor of Kogi State Abubakar Audu, with the intention of harming the reputation of David.

In the charge, Melaye’s alleged offences are said to be punishable under sections 140 and 393 of the Peal Code Law, Cap. 89, Laws of Northern Nigeria, 1963.

The first of the two counts read, “That you, Senator Dino Melaye, male, of the Senate, National Assembly, Three Arms Zone, Abuja, on or about the month of April 2017 at the Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court in the cause of an investigation into the alleged assassination attempt on you, sometimes in April 2017, you gave information to the police stating that one Mr. Edward Onoja David (Chief of Staff to the Governor of Kogi State) did mastermind the attack with intent to convict him for the offence which statement you either knew or believe to be false and you thereby committed an offence punishable under section 140 of the Penal Code Law, Cap. 89, Laws of Northern Nigeria, 1963.”

Melaye was said to have told Abubakar, son of a former Kogi State Governor, in a telephone conversation how he framed Edward Onoja David in the assassination attempt.

He was also said to have made the false claim in the statement he made to the police on April 17, 2017 during police’s investigation into the alleged attempt to assassinate him. No date is set yet for his arraignment.

Politics › Four Officers Missing In Benue As Herdsmen Ambush Police Team by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:55pm On Feb 10, 2018
The police in Benue are searching for four officers following an attack on a patrol team in Logo Local Government Area on Saturday afternoon, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.

The men were returning from a confidence-building mission in remote villages when suspected herdsmen opened fire on them in Tse Akpam village, near Azege town, police and residents told PREMIUM TIMES.

“We had had an encounter around Azege when a team of mobile police went on confidence patrol,” said police commissioner Fatai Owoseni. “When they were coming back at a point in Azege, they started hearing gunfire from inside the bush suspected to be from the herdsmen. There was a serious exchange of gunfire.”

Mr. Owoseni said the attackers burnt a police van and four officers could not be found as at 7:20 p.m. Saturday.
“One of our vehicles was set ablaze. So far, on their side, we’re still trying to ascertain casualties; while we’re yet to see four of our men,” he said.

The police chief said more officers have been dispatched to the areas to comb for the missing officers.
His statement to PREMIUM TIMES corroborates what witnesses had earlier informed this newspaper about the development.

Residents told PREMIUM TIMES that a police officer who sustained gunshot injury was taken to the hospital in Ayilamo, the headquarters of Tombo Council Ward about eight kilometres from Azege where the attack occurred.

Enoch Nyikyaa, a chief in Logo LGA, told PREMIUM TIMES the attack occurred in his domain and that the herdsmen who carried it out also destroyed farmlands with their cattle.

He said the attack occurred in Tse Akpam village, which is within Azege.

The herdsmen are still reportedly grazing in some remote villages in Benue despite a subsisting law that prohibits open-grazing in the state.

The attack comes a day after three persons were killed in separate assaults on villages in the same local government area Thursday night.

Three persons who sustained injuries in the attacks are currently undergoing treatments at the hospital.

The Thursday night attack, which occurred near Anyiin, a town in Logo LGA that serves as a base for police special forces, earned the police renewed criticism from those who believe the security agencies are doing too little to resolve the frequent herdsmen clashes, which has claimed over a hundred lives in Benue alone this year.

Residents have also accused the police of being too afraid to move to the dangerous areas where herdsmen are said to be hiding and which they use as bases to launch attacks, a situation that some officers confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES in confidence last month.

But Mr. Owoseni said Saturday’s attack should be seen as an evidence of police’s proactive approach towards the crisis.
“People are saying police are not working, but going on confidence-building patrol is being proactive,” Mr. Owoseni said. “If we didn’t go on patrol, how would we have suffered this attack?”

The commissioner said Azege and its environs are safe, urging the residents to believe in the ability of police to return peace to the entire state.

“We will not relent, we’ll continue to take the fight to them and give assurances to the people that we won’t wait until they come and attack them,” he said.

Politics › I Don't Like Buhari's Culture Of Silence - Acf's Spokesman, Sani Says by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:34pm On Feb 10, 2018
In this interview with GODWIN ISENYO, Secretary-General of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Elder Anthony Sani, comments on the recent statement by the Minister of Defence that blamed the blockage of grazing routes for the incessant attacks by Fulani herdsmen and other issues

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo in a recent statement asked President Muhammadu Buhari not to contest the 2019 presidency because of his low performance among others. What’s your view on this?

It is the democratic right of former President Obasanjo to advise President Buhari. But the decision to recontest in 2019 or not is within the purview of Mr. President and his party, the All Progressives Congress.

]But he also mentioned other reasons, viz nepotism, inability to halt the herdsmen’ killings in the north and other parts of the country, etc? Do you share such views?

When former President Obasanjo made the allegations of nepotism and cited Alhaji Abdullrasheed Maina, the embattled former Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms boss, to buttress his submission, I could not get the basis. This is because Maina did not commit the offence for which is being declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission during the regime of President Buhari. He is from the North East and not a fulani man. And if he stole billions of naira, I guess those who lured him to come back to the civil service might have done so in order to retrieve some of the alleged loots. But I truly do not know the facts.

On the newly appointed Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, I wonder if the accusers have forgotten the fact that the appointment was recent, while the allegations of nepotism had been long and remained unsubstantiated with facts.

It is unreasonable for anybody to imagine that clashes between herdsmen and farmers are inspired by nepotism on the part of Mr. President. I say this because the president is aware of the fact that the clashes between herdsmen and farmers and any form of violent killings add no political fortune to him and his regime; hence his resolve to bring the clashes under control in no distant future.

What’s more, Fulani are not only herdsmen but some are also farmers. That is why such clashes are reported in some states of North West geopolitical zone which is predominantly Fulani and Muslims. It is therefore unhelpful to give the herdsmen phenomenon ethnic coloration, considering some people in other ethnic extractions are also herdsmen. Once we give purely criminal actions ethnic coloration, we unwittingly provide the criminals platform on which to stand and perpetrate the heinous acts, knowing well how impossible it is to prosecute ethnicity and religion.

It seems to me we only know there is swarm of locust in town but we do not know the pests, hence the stone groping. Nigerians should better come together and unleash their synergistic potential against the collective challenges for common good.

Some Nigerians were of the opinion that Obasanjo ought to have admonished the President in private rather than his usual ‘letter writing’. Do you share this view?

I am happy you use the phrase “usual letter writing”. You may wish to note that those who posit that the former President Obasanjo would have advised President Buhari privately, given the fact of history that Obasanjo was Buhari’s boss under both military and civilian regimes-since he has ingress to the Villa-are those who do not know that Obasanjo is someone who relishes in publicity and relevance, considering this is not the first letter he would write to a sitting president. And since that is his past time which is his democratic right to do so, there is no qualm.

What’s your take on the current government’s efforts in tackling insecurity in the north and the entire country?

The regime faces enormous security challenges posed by insurgence, kidnapping, cultism, armed robbery and child trafficking across the country. There are predisposing factors of poverty that come from unemployment. The cashless economy by CBN has tended to make people not to carry cash, hence the attention to kidnapping. But as the former President Obasanjo has said in his letter, this regime has tried in the fight against insurgence and corruption despite heavy challenges. What remains substantially is the task of addressing the underlying causes of these challenges, which requires time for desired results to come to pass.

Also, many Nigerians, especially the opposition party, PDP, have accused the Buhari administration of being selective in the fight against corruption. Do you agree with this?

I do not have the facts. But it is important to note that PDP ruled for 16 years. It is natural for those who played seminal roles in those 16 years to be the centre of attention. That cannot be said to be discrimination, since the fight against corruption is work in progress and expected to outlive the regime of President Buhari. I would, however, advise those arraigned to defend their innocence instead of saying they are not alone who are corrupt.

What’s your take in the government’s handling of farmers/herders clash in parts of the north?

The fact that the clashes have not ebbed suggests the government has not done enough. This is an odd thing to say, considering the security challenges across the country which put too much demand on the limited number of security agents. But I have the belief that the President will act decisively as promised because the clashes between the herdsmen and farmers pose serious security challenges to the unity of the nation. The President will address the challenges posed by the clashes in the same way he has been tackling Boko Haram and about to defeat them completely.

In what ways has the ACF come in to proffer solution to the herdsmen/farmers clash in the region?

ACF has since suggested that the Federal Government should seize the initiative by convening a meeting between stakeholders for the purpose of arriving at solutions that are acceptable to the pastoralists and the farmers. It is not right for governors of the same ruling party to openly altercate on this matter that poses serious challenges to corporate existence of the nation. Governors should be speaking the same voice on this matter that calls for bipartisan approach.

The Federal Government has proposed ‘cattle colony’ as one of the recipes to the herders/farmers clash. What is your take on this?

I understand cattle colony is a form of ranching. But because the word “colony” has negative connotation, it has not been received well and I think the Federal Government has dropped the name, cattle colony, in favour of a more acceptable name.

What do you think is the solution to the clashes between herders and farmers?

I have told you there are predisposing factors of increased population, desert encroachment, poverty that comes with unemployment and effects of drug abuse by the youths of both pastoralists and farmers. The president should provide leadership by convening a meeting of seminal leaders of stakeholders for the purpose of arriving at solution which the feuding parties share. The media should not help give the clashes ethnic coloration, lest the criminals use ethnicity to shield themselves from the law.

The Minister of Defence recently stood up in defending the Fulani herdsmen, saying that the ‘blockage’ of cattle grazing routes by farmers led to this crisis. What is your view on this?

No blockade is enough to make herdsmen take lives of others and no entering of cows into farms should make farmers kill herdsmen or rustle their cattle. That is not to suggest that blocking of routes does not constitute a problem in the herdsmen saga.

What’s your assessment of the more than two-year old administration of President Buhari?

I believe the regime has done creditably well in the fight against the insurgence and corruption in order to clear the way for the economy which is picking up. That may explain why the letter by the former president has become controversial. If the regime has not performed creditably well, Obasanjo’s letter would have received national endorsement.

But my positive assessment in favour of the regime should not be regarded as if the regime has no shortcomings. No regime can be perfect. Surely, the regime has its own shortcomings such as the impression of a divided presidency where government’s functionaries openly contradict themselves. Also, a party with majority in the legislature should be seen as working in harmony. But this is not the case because members of the ruling party openly challenge the president and the executive arm of the government. This is odd.

I also do not fancy the culture of silence by the President on almost all challenges that come up. This conveys an avoidable impression of a leadership style that allows problems to fizzle out with time. Some of us do not like such style. In addition, while the emphasis the president puts on appointing only people he personally knows to be very loyal is in line with his professional training may be understandable, he needs to know that some of the appointees can still abuse his trust, hence the need for presidential oversight on their activities.

But on balance, the bright side of the president’s performance outweighs the dark side.

Politics › Senate Lauds Total's $16bn Investment In Nigeria, Says Nigeria Moving Rightly by BeeBeeOoh(op): 3:05pm On Feb 10, 2018
Mr Solomon Adeola, the Chairman Senate Ad hoc Committee on Local Content, has commended the management of Total Upstream Nigeria Limited (TUPNI) on its 16 billion dollars (N5.76 trillion) Egina project in Nigeria.

Adeola, who gave the commendation during the committee’s oversight function in Lagos on Friday, promised total support for the local content development initiative.

The committee inspected the 3.3 billion dollar Floating Production Storage Offloading (FPSO) vessel.

The storage facility is for 200,000 barrels per day Egina deep-water oilfield, which is expected from South Korea on Jan. 23.

Adeola said the essence of the visit was to see and have first-hand information on the Egina FPSO and to also commend Total for making the huge investment a reality.

According to him, the 330-metre long Egina FPSO, the largest FPSO ever installed in Nigeria, by private investors and the Nigerian government was commendable.

“If Nigeria can attract such huge project estimated at 16.3 billion dollars, it shows we are moving in the right direction and growing our economy,” he said.

Adeola said this was the first project executed after the passage of the Nigerian Local Content Act, an indication that local content development has come to stay in Nigeria.

He promised that the committee would ensure full implementation of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act (NOGIC) passed by the national assembly.

Mr Nicolas Terraz, the Managing Director of TUPNI, appreciated the committee’s support and encouragements toward ensuring that the projected was completed on scheduled.

He said work had commenced on the FPSO and would undergo the integration of six locally fabricated modules within the next six months.

According to him, the integration of the six locally fabricated topside modules before its final sail-away to the Egina field is a remarkable achievement in local content development in Nigeria.

The Total upstream boss said several technological feats had been recorded by the various entities involved in the project.

“Egina is the deepest offshore development carried out so far in Nigeria, with water depths over 1,500 meters,’’ he said.

Terraz explained that the EGINA FPSO was designed to operate for 25 years and produce about 200,000 barrels of oil per day.

He said the Egina operations would generate significant activities for local contractors in various sectors and would continue to provide avenues for the training and development of Nigerians in various domains.

NAN reports that Egina is the largest investment project currently ongoing in the oil and gas sector in Nigeria.

Education › Snake Swallows N36m Cash In JAMB Office Makurdi, Benue State by BeeBeeOoh(op): 2:06pm On Feb 10, 2018
A mystery snake is said to have sneaked into the accounts office of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, in Makurdi, the Benue State capital and made away with N36 million cash.

Before now, JAMB candidates purchased scratch cards from JAMB state offices and other designated centers, to gain access to the Board’s website for either registration or to check their admission status but the reforms introduced by JAMB registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, recommended an end to the use of scratch cards.

A team of auditors was dispatched to different state offices of JAMB to take inventory of the sold and unsold scratch cards and recover whatever money that might have either been generated or mismanaged during the period of the sale of scratch cards.

On their visit to Makurdi office of JAMB, a sales clerk, Philomina Chieshe, told JAMB registrar and his team that she could not account for N36 million she made in previous years before the abolition of scratch cards.

In the course of interrogation, Philomena confessed that it was her housemaid that connived with another JAMB staff, Joan Asen, to “spiritually” steal the money from the vault in the accounts office.

She said: “I was one of the four sales clerks attached to JAMB office in Makurdi. My responsibility was to sell scratch cards to candidates and not involved in handling the revenues. It was the responsibility of Joan Asen and my other senior colleagues. I only remit money when am done selling the cards.

“Few months ago, there was issue of fraud in the Makurdi office. Auditors were sent from Abuja to carefully flip the record books of the office, to perhaps, ascertain the current state of affairs.

“The state Coordinator, Obilo, was not around when the audit team came. But in the course of the audit, N36 million was discovered to have been missing from the account. An investigation was launched. In the course of the investigation, it was discovered that Joan Asen, who is account staff and a lady outside JAMB have connived to steal the money.”

Philomina in her confessional statement said that Joan Asen and her accomplices confessed that they have been stealing the money “spiritually” through a mysterious snake that always sneak into the office to swallow the money from the vault.

According to her “It was a mystery to me too. I have been saving the money in the bank, but I found it difficult to account for it. So I started saving it in a vault in the office. But each time I open the vault, I will find nothing. I became worried and surprised how the millions of Naira could be disappearing from the vault. I began to interrogate everybody in the house and office, and no one could agree on what might have happened to the money. I continued to press until my housemaid confessed. She said that the money disappeared “spiritually”. She said that a “mysterious snake” sneaked into the house and swallowed the money in the vault.”

Politics › Buhari Sending Fulani Soldiers To Protect Herdsmen, Kill Benue People - IPOB by BeeBeeOoh(op):
The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has alleged that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government deployed Fulani soldiers to Benue State to protect herdsmen and not people of the state.

IPOB said the deployment of Fulani soldiers was to “hoodwink the masses” into thinking that the current government is serious about fighting the crisis the govetnment created.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the pro-Biafra group maintained that the the deployment of troops to Benue State was “not real.”

The statement reads, “The deployment of troops to beleaguered Benue communities is a fraud designed to hoodwink the masses into thinking that this Buhari administration is serious about fighting the menace of Fulani herdsmen which they created through their policy of acquiescence and appeasement. An Australian Islamic cleric a few days ago summarized governance in Nigeria by tagging this Buhari regime a terrorist administration.

“This is from the mouth of an Islamic cleric not IPOB. These so called troops allegedly deployed to Benue are all staffed by Fulani officers who as usual will provide protection and cover for the tribesmen who are doing the killing. The world witnessed the same scenario in Southern Kaduna in 2016\17 or we have, suddenly forgotten. Did Nigerian Army not supply murderous Fulani herdsmen with arms with which they massacred and sacked non Muslim villages in Southern Kaduna?

“This government is currently in the midst of deceit but unfortunately some people are being taken in by their lies. It took pressure from all over the world to get this administration to agree to this paper deployment because we know it’s not real. A non violent organisation like IPOB had Operation Python Dance unleashed on the entire South East and South South with active connivance of Igbo politicians and Ohaneze Ndigbo leadership.

“Have you heard a single word of condemnation from any Hausa Fulani governor or Arewa Consultative Forum against these killer herdsmen? The answer is a capital NO. Maybe there is a lesson here to be learned by Igbo politicians and Ohaneze Ndigbo.

“The best remedy for the murderous mayhem of Fulani terrorists is to divide Nigeria. Anybody still habouring the hope of one united prosperous Nigeria is living in a fools paradise. Unfortunately this belatedly announced Operation Cat paws or whatever they named it, to deal with a band of hardened state sponsored terrorists is totally meaningless. People will continue to die needlessly until Nigeria is divided.”

Politics › PMB Speaks On Herdsmen Crisis, Says Creation Of Grazing Locations Misconstrued.. by BeeBeeOoh(op):
Says creation of grazing locations misconstrued, not another form of colonisation

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday in Abuja explained that the policy proposed by Federal Government in response to the frequent clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the country is not meant to colonise any part of the country.

Receiving Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) led by Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama, President Buhari said the intention of government is to create grazing locations for cattle rearers, which has now been misconstrued as another form of colonisation.

President Buhari said he regretted that the “well-thought out policy of the Federal Government, which was conceived after wide consultations with stakeholders”, had been largely misunderstood by a section of the public.

He, however, assured the Catholic Bishops that the Federal Government will continue to explore all opportunities and support initiatives to ensure peace and stability in restive areas.

Condemning recent spate of killings in Benue, Adamawa, Taraba, and Zamfara states, the president said security operatives would ensure prosecution of perpetrators and all those found with illegal arms in the affected areas.

‘‘The impression created that I was sitting in an air-conditioned office and home, enjoying myself while these things happened, is dishonest.

‘‘At every step, I have tried to foresee these problems because I have the experience as a former military officer who commanded three out of the four divisions of the Nigerian army, in Lagos, Ibadan and Jos.

‘‘I am quite aware of the problems we have and I am doing my best to get law enforcement agencies to be on alert,’’ he said.
Mr. Buhari told the Catholic Bishops that he would not be tired of recounting remarkable progress recorded in the areas of security, economy and the fight against corruption.

‘‘We have done very well on security in the North East, when you compare what the condition was before we came in and what it is now.

‘‘On the economy, particularly agriculture, I am very pleased that God answered the prayers of Nigerians who prayed for bountiful harvest.

‘‘People have taken advantage of Federal Government policies and programmes to return to the farm and they have not regretted,’’ he said.

On the fight against corruption, the president said the government would be guided by the law in the investigation and prosecution of all graft-related cases.

‘‘People are being prosecuted systematically with evidence.

‘‘If a permanent secretary has five houses in Abuja, two in Kaduna and one in Borno and Sokoto and he can’t account for the properties and there are bank transactions linking him to the properties, the prosecuting agencies will not have difficulties to make progress on the case,” he said.

On the question of federal character, the president said no ethnic group or political zone has been deliberately marginalised in the appointments made so far.

He, however, added that he would take a second look at areas on which issues have been raised, when a compendium of all government appointments is submitted to him.

In his remarks, Mr. Kaigama pledged that the Catholic Church in Nigeria would continue to support the Buhari administration and make its contribution to nation-building through prayers, admonitions and assistance to needy Nigerians.

‘‘As the voice of the people, we shall continue to highlight the plight of our people and play our prophetic role of sensitising the government, thus promoting good governance, national unity and cohesion,’’ Mr. Kaigama said.

Politics › NAF Moves Against Killer Herdsmen, Sets Up Base In Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa Axis by BeeBeeOoh(op): 10:01pm On Feb 08, 2018
Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, on Thursday disclosed Nigerian Air Force (NAF) readiness to establish a Forward Operational Base (FOB) in Taraba State.

He said this is part of plans to further tackle the incessant herdsmen-farmers clash in the country.

The CAS while delivering a lecture to participants of National Defence College (NDC) Course 26 in Abuja, also announced plans to establish a Quick Response Wing along the Benue-Nassarawa Axis.

Air Marshal Abubakar also spoke on the current and likely threats as well as contingencies from the perspective of air operations.

He then elucidated on his vision for the NAF while also highlighting current efforts at actualizing it.

Some of the initiatives included establishment of new commands and some units, improvement in human capacity development, improved aircraft serviceability and logistics support as well as enhanced personnel welfare.

He also spoke about the efforts being made in the area of research and development towards improved self-sufficiency, as a result of which the NAF is currently making great savings in foreign exchange.

He further discussed the current NAF Force structure, doctrine, current capabilities and equipment holding in response to threats alongside the NAF’s strategic plan before looking at NAF future perspectives.

The CAS equally examined the challenges and constraints to the NAF’s air power effectiveness before concluding the lecture by discussing the strategies to countering the challenges enumerated.

The CAS, who disclosed the plans while delivering a lecture to participants of National Defence College (NDC) Course 26 in Abuja, also announced plans to establish a Quick Response Wing along the Benue-Nassarawa Axis.

The title of the lecture, which lasted one hour, was ‘The Nigerian Air Force – Challenges and Future Perspectives’. Participants of the Course are drawn from senior officers of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and those of sister African countries, senior officials of other security agencies in Nigeria as well as those of Federal Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

The lecture afforded the CAS to share thoughts with the participants on how the National Defence Policy prescribes that the NAF should be employed, out of which the mission statement of the NAF was coined. Air Marshal Abubakar also spoke on the current and likely threats as well as contingencies from the perspective of air operations. He then elucidated on his vision for the NAF while also highlighting current efforts at actualizing it.

Some of the initiatives included but are not limited to the establishment of new commands and some units, improvement in human capacity development, improved aircraft serviceability and logistics support as well as enhanced personnel welfare. Thereafter, he discussed the current NAF Force structure, doctrine, current capabilities and equipment holding in response to threats alongside the NAF’s strategic plan before looking at NAF future perspectives.

The CAS equally examined the challenges and constraints to the NAF’s air power effectiveness before concluding the lecture by discussing the strategies to countering the challenges enumerated. The lecture was followed by a stimulating interactive session.

In his closing remarks, the Commandant of NDC, Rear Admiral Adeniyi Osinowo, declared that “You cannot win any war today without an effective and virile Air Force”. He then added that there was no doubt that the current NAF leadership is taking a lot of laudable and unprecedented steps, especially in the area of technological development, in a bid to reposition the NAF for greatness. He particularly cited the recent feats by the NAF in locally designing and producing an operational Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, among many other breakthroughs in the area of research and development. He then seized the opportunity to congratulate the CAS on the recent passage of the bill establishing the Air Force Institute of Technology Kaduna, which he believed would further enhance technological growth in the NAF.

It is recalled that the NAF had also earlier announced plans to establish FOBs in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, as part of its commitment to combatting emerging security challenges in those parts of the country.

There's an Igbo adage that says:

Meaning: He That His Father Sent To Rob Uses Leg To Break The Door

That's the case of killer herdsmen these days because they get the backing of the government, very very unfortunate embarassed

Politics › Gani Adams On Fulani Herdsmen Killings: "What Yorubas Will Do" by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:23pm On Feb 08, 2018
Gani Adams, Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, has boasted that the people of the South West would resist any attempt by herdsmen to turn the region into a killing field.

He spoke while lamenting the number of lives lost to the activities of herdsmen across the country.

Adams also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently mandate security agents to, “arrest the blood-thirsty maniacs on the rampage in the country, masquerading as herdsmen, and bring them to justice, to avoid a total breakdown of law and order.”

The Aare Ona Kakanfo stated this in ‎a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Aderemi.

He also condemned the killing of the Officer-in-Charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Saki Unit, of Oyo State Police Command, by herdsmen.

The statement reads, “The first fundamental right of a Nigerian is the right to life. It is when you are alive that you can enjoy other rights. Once this right is taken away from you through killings and murder, you cannot enjoy any other right. Nigerians demand Right to Life. More than a thousand Nigerians have been killed in the last one year. Is Nigeria at war? There is more to all these killings.”

“The diplomacy of the Yoruba on national issues, especially when it borders on security, should not be misconstrued for cowardice. It is part of our nature to accommodate people from other ethnic nationalities but now, our people cannot go to their farms again because of the fear of the unknown. The Federal Government must immediately check activities of these killers to avoid plunging the country into an avoidable war.

“There is no war in Nigeria, there is no famine, no earthquake, but the number of IDPs in the country is more than what obtains in a country where war is going on. Murder of Nigerians, including pregnant women and children continues everyday. What is really going on?

“Perception is everything. The Federal Government is not helping its own image with the belief by Nigerians that the presidency is always silent when the issue concerns Fulani herdsmen.

“Let me remind the government that killing and murder remain serious crimes in our law books. No level of politics can change this. Nigerians are being killed and the government seems helpless. Utterances from government officials such as the Defence Minister, Brig–Gen. Mansur Dan–Ali (retd), and the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, are not helping matters. One wonders if we are in the same country.

“Peace and security cannot be guaranteed where there is no justice. To enforce the law, security agents must ensure justice for all and sundry. Nigerians were shocked to wake up on New Year Day and hear the news of killings in Benue State. Now, Nigerians living in Nasarawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Kogi and others don’t feel safe. Senseless killing is like cancer and if not quickly checked, the situation can lead to a complete breakdown of law and order because Nigerians have the right to defend themselves.

“Historically, the Yoruba are known to have the capacity to defend themselves. These killers are testing waters by burning the farm of Chief Olu Falae and invading the farms of prominent people in the South-West. We will no longer accept activities of this murderous gang in Yorubaland. Enough is enough”.
