- Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II has lamented over the usage of hate speech in the social media
- Sanusi said Nigeria is on the path to anarchy because of the reckless use of hate speeches on social media platforms
- He, however, called on the relevant authorities to checkmate the menace before it drags the country into the anarchyEmir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II on Monday, February 19, faulted usage of hate speech in the social media and called on relevant authorities to checkmate the menace before it drags the country into anarchy.
The Nation reports Sanusi who made this known through the district head of Rogo, Alhaji Muhammad Muhammad Muaraz said political leadership across board must arise and fight against the usage of hate speech.
He further said that Nigeria is on the path to anarchy because of the reckless use of hate speeches on social media platforms.
The monarch made this in his remarks during the opening session of the 2nd NUJ National Conference Kano 2018 with the theme, “Hate Speech: Halting the Tide before It Is Too Late”.
According to him, ''Indiscriminate use of words that are provocative posses the danger of leading the country towards anarchy.''
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the Emir of Kano said intelligent debate on restructuring must start to end ethnic agitations across Nigeria.
Speaking at the Union Bank’s centenary event in Lagos state, the Emir Sanusi said there is need for federal government to interact and bring lasting peace in the country.
Emir said the current constitution which states the country must have governors and deputies in all the 36 states, president and vice president, ministers from every state, over 109 senators and over 360 House of representatives, 774 local chairmen are not sustainable. https://www.naija.ng/1153099-sanusi-laments-usage-hate-speech-social-media.htmlhtmlLalasticlala, Mynd44 |
Politics › Rumors Of Ortom's Plans To Join PDP Heightens As He Reconciles With Suswam by BeeBeeOoh(op): 7:21am On Feb 20, 2018*. Modified: 9:33am On Feb 20, 2018 |
...Reconciles with SuswamThe insinuation that the Benue State Governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom, is planning to dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday gained ground as the governor and his predecessor finally reconcile after several months of hostility. The two have had a frosty relationship since 2015 when Ortom won the governorship election after defecting from the PDP.
However, recent development resulting from the Fulani herdsmen attack in which the governor felt slighted and abandoned by some bigwigs of the APC, the governor was alleged to have been making a subtle move to the PDP.
The state has also recently been a Mecca of visit by several past and present governors of the PDP, including Nyesome Wike of Rivers State and Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State which some PDP source disclosed was to convince Ortom to join the PDP.
While fielding questions from journalists at the Government House in Makurdi yesterday, Ortom said he and Suswam have decided to embrace peace and work together after a meeting which was held in Gboko, Tiv traditional headquarters, at the weekend at the instance of the Tor Tiv, Professor, James Ayatse.
“The meeting was a peace meeting and it was convened at the instance of the Tor Tiv.
“The Tor Tiv told us that he noticed that the relationship between me and the former governor was not good, and advised us that as Tiv prominent sons, we should work together.
“He said whatever were our differences, we should sheath our sword and work together for the common good of the people of the state.”
The Tiv paramount ruler, according to Ortom attributed some problems bedeviling Benue today was as a result of lack of unity between the leaders of the state,” Ortom stated.
He said the Tor Tiv asked for synergies between them, and therefore urged them to harmonise their differences and work together for the interest of the state.
On insinuations that he was begging his predecessor for platform to contest the 2019 gubernatorial election, Ortom said there was nothing of such, stressing that such rumours are from some elements who have been benefitting from the crisis between him and Suswam.
He said there was no basis for him to beg as the sitting governor, adding that he has since put on hold all political activities until the 160,000 displaced people in the displaced people’s camps return to their ancestral homes.
On threats to his life as a result of his posture on the anti-open grazing law, the governor said he has heard about them and has since reported to the police for necessary action. http://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2018/02/20/rumour-of-ortoms-plans-to-move-to-pdp-heightens/

Phones › Nigerians Spent N3.208 Trillion On Airtime In 2017 - New Telegraph by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:13am On Feb 19, 2018 |
Despite the economic recession, which started in Nigeria in 2016 and lingered till a greater part of 2017, Nige-rian telecoms subscribers across mobile networks still spent a huge chunk of their household income on telecoms services last year, New Telegraph investigations have revealed. According to findings, a whopping N3.208 trillion was expended by Nigerian subscribers as the estimated amount used to buy airtime credit to access voice and data services on their mobile devices across mobile network operators (MNOs).
The amount also represents the estimated revenue raked in by various telecoms companies across Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM),Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and fixed wired/wireless networks. In 2015 and 2016, estimated spending of subscribers on airtime purchases to access both voice and data services on the devices were conservatively valued at N2.8 trillion and N3.3 trillion respectively, as analysed by this newspaper.
It was gathered that the airtime credits were purchased across different platforms such as the physical recharge card option, the virtual top-up (VTU) done through USSD code, subscribers’ bank accounts domiciled on their mobile devices, vending on web-based platforms, as well as on Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).
The estimated airtime spending and revenue for subscribers and telcos respectively, was arrived at using the monthly active subscriber base for the 12-month period and the Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) data in the nation’s telecoms industry.
ARPU is the industry’s benchmark determined by industry players to measure the average or mean spending by telecoms consumers on airtime, which they, in turn, use to access voice and data services. Throughout 2017, industry ARPU in the country’s $70 billion telecommunication market floated around N1,842. Hence, the N3.3 trillion as conservatively arrived by multiplying the underlining ARPU figure of N1,842 with active subscriber base from January to last December, as released by the telecoms umpire.
With 155.1 million active subscriber base on mobile networks in January last year, the estimated household spending on airtime stood at N285.6 billion. In February and March same year, when active subscribers stood at 154.1 million and N154.4 million and with the ARPU of N1,842, the estimated consumer spending were N283.8 billion and N284.4 billion respectively. Also, airtime spending last April, May and June were estimated at N274.8 billion; N267.6 billion and N263.4 billion when active telephone users across different mobile networks seated at 149.2 million, 145.3 million and 143 million in that order.
In addition, operators raked in N256.2 billion and N256.7 billion in July and August as declining subscribers dropped to 139.1 million and 139.4 million respectively. By September and October, when active subscribers were 139.9 million and 140.7 million, the amount spent by the subscribers on airtime purchase were estimated at N257.6 billion and N259.1 billion respectively. Also, the subscriber spending stood at N262 billion when active subscriber base on mobile networks rose to 142.2 million in November and N267 billion expended on airtime last December at a time active subscribers reached 145 million.
Meanwhile, the decline in subscriber spending between 2016 and 2017 had been attributed to the sharp decline in the active subscriber base in the country and the fluctuation that greeted the rebound efforts. Telecoms stakeholders, including the NCC and telecoms companies under the aegis of the Association of Telecoms Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) and Association of Licensed Tele-coms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), have attributed the decline to a number of factors, especially the effect of over the top (OTT), the tough economic situation and the high rate of subscriber identity module (SIM) churning.
According to them, one of the major threats that have also continued to rear their heads since beginning of this year is the increasing realisation on the part of telecoms companies that they are losing substantial amount of revenue to OTT platforms such as Facebook call, Skype, WhatsApp, BBM, Viber, among others on their revenue. Already, telecoms operators in Nigeria have called on the NCC to regulate OTT, but the regulator has said it does not regulate technology, but charged operators to be innovative.
“OTT has come to stay and the only thing remaining for the mobile networks is to be innovative,” Chairman, ALTON, Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, said. He noted that with the increasing usage of datadriven OTT platforms to chat and make VoIP calls by subscribers, the number of voice subscriptions has, over the first 10 months last year, dropped from over 155 million to 140 million as at last October, representing a loss of 15 million subscribers. “People use OTT platforms to make IP calls instead of the traditional voice calls, which is relatively cheaper for them,” he said, stressing that the drop in voice subscriptions was resulting in declining revenue for telecoms operators. https://newtelegraphonline.com/2018/02/nigerians-spent-n3-208trn-airtime-2017/

Politics › Why President Buhari Is The Best For Nigeria - Lai Mohammed by BeeBeeOoh(op): 1:23pm On Feb 18, 2018 |
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said with President Muhammadu Buhari piloting the affairs of Nigeria, the country is in very safe and competent hands, hence there is no cause for alarm.
The Minister said this at a mini town hall meeting with the staff of the Nigerian Embassy in Madrid, Spain, and a cross-section of Nigerians living in the European country on Saturday.
He said contrary to the fake news being peddled on the Social Media, Nigeria is making steady progress, especially in revamping the economy, tackling insecurity and fighting corruption – the three cardinal programmes of the Buhari Administration.
”Don’t believe everything you read on the Social Media. Nigeria is neither at war nor in crisis,” Mr. Mohammed said, according to a statement by his special assistant, Segun Adeyemi.
”Contrary to what you may be reading on the Internet, the Buhari Administration is putting Nigeria on a solid footing, after the years that were eaten by the locust.”
He said naysayers are spending millions of Naira to distort the true situation of things in Nigeria and to make the administration look bad.
The Minister said the administration’s achievements should be evaluated against the background of the tough challenges that it has faced since coming into office on 29 May 2015. ”It is said that if you don’t know where you are coming from, you won’t know where you are going,” he said, listing the drastic fall in the price of crude oil, the low foreign reserves at $24 billion, the fact that the federal government was borrowing to pay workers’ salaries, and the fact that many states were unable to pay salaries as some of those challenges.
Mr. Mohammed also said when the Administration came into office, unpaid pensions had run into billions of Naira in many states, contractors had abandoned sites across the country because they were being heavily owed, infrastructure was in poor state, power generation was 2,690 megawatts, billions were being paid as ‘fuel subsidies’ to fat cats, corruption was the order of the day, while 20 of the 27 local governments in Borno were under the firm control of Boko Haram.
”Today, the trend is being reversed, and the results are showing: Foreign reserves is now $42.8b, the highest level in four years, inflation has fallen for 12 consecutive months to 15.13%, 108 billion Naira has been saved from removal of maintenance fees payable to banks before Treasury Single Account (TSA), the nation is being saved 24.7 billion Naira monthly with the full implementation of the TSA and the elimination of ghost workers has saved the nation 120 billion Naira.
”With improved macro-economic conditions, capital inflow is on the upswing, reaching $1.8 billion in the second quarter of 2017, which is almost double the $908 million in the first quarter, Nigeria’s stock market is one of the best-performing in the world, delivering returns in excess of 40 percent, Nigeria jumped 24 places on the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business ranking, and earned a place on the List of Top 10 Reformers in the world,” he said.
The Minister also told the meeting that the Administration’s agricultural revolution is moving Nigeria close to self-sufficiency in many staples, especially rice, that the home-grown school feeding programme has created jobs for 61,352 cooks, and it is providing 6.4 million school children in 33,981 schools across 20 states with one meal a day, that power generation has increased to 7,000 megawatts, that Boko Haram has been massively degraded and that the administration’s is embarking on a massive infrastructural renewal.
Mr. Mohammed, who urged the Nigerians to download the FGN-iAPP in order to get authentic news from Nigeria, later fielded questions from the Nigerians, with many of them seeking to know when Nigerians in the diaspora will be able to vote, how they can access the national identity card, how they can get authentic information from Nigeria and what the federal government is doing to end the herder-farmer clashes.
Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain, Susan Aderonke Folarin, led the staff of the embassy to the town hall meeting, which was held at the embassy premises. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/259056-why-buhari-is-best-for-nigeria-lai-mohammed.htmlhtml

Isn't it obvious that since these wanton killing by killer herdsmen started no northern governor, emir, sultan and so on haven't condemned the killings rather, they always justify it? “Where we come from, you don’t pay for land, you only ask for permission to use it. That is why I said you people are biased against other people and that is why the peace of this country will be very difficult.” Can you imagine? So, what this man is tryna tell us is that people(be it Igbo, Yoruba etc) doing businesses in the north doesn't pay for the shops they are using or they didn't purchase the land's they built their hotels? Truly, truly Nigeria is Federal Republic Of Cow Last Bullet: Don't condemn Mr. Ango Abdullahi because he spoke the mind of an average Fulani man |
Politics › Why Fulani Herdsmen Kill - Ango Abdullahi Says by BeeBeeOoh(op): 10:59am On Feb 18, 2018 |
A former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, and spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum, NEF, Prof. Ango Abdullahi has vehemently defended the incessant killings by Fulani herdsmen across the country.
Abdullahi also said that the herdsmen menace is politically motivated by the South to disrupt the politically united North ahead of the 2019 general elections, adding that this was how Boko Haram was introduced during Goodluck Jonathan’s government which led to his failure in the 2015 polls.
Justifying the killings, the Professor said that the herdsmen are killing members of their host communities in order to defend themselves, adding that the herders were free to take the cattle to any part of the country the same way an Igbo man does his business.
In a strong worded interview with Vanguard, Abdullahi said, “I have been involved in debates against some respected people from the southern part of this country who believe that this country is not balanced because the North is too big; because the North is too politically united, so there must be a way of disrupting this unity, and this is what we are seeing on ground today, and the elements that are being used are the Fulani herdsmen.
“This matter would be looked at properly; political alliances and so on are welcome. You don’t need to lose blood, or property to engage in political alliance or whatever you want, or still, you don’t need to introduce excuses that will lead to loss of lives. We saw this when the Boko Haram was on ground; they said northerners created the sect to disrupt former President Goodluck Jonathan’s government, which led to his failure in the last election, and so on.
“Now that Boko Haram is out of the way, the new excuse is the Fulani herdsmen. This is what is happening in other places except in areas that you are talking.
“We have seen what they called a new handshake across the Niger; it is political, and we have seen the mourning that has taken place in Benue and other places to show that the monolithic North is not in tandem with the Middle Belt; it is all politics. Our Middle Belters don’t need to take the agenda that appears to be a thing of distrust. We are not going to force anybody into a relationship politically or otherwise. We see this as a political agenda.
Asked if herdsmen are not the ones committing the murders, he added, “The truth is, if you want to kill me and I have a chance first, I will kill you, or you do want people to be killed and not defend themselves? By your reporting, you have denied them justice and government also has denied them justice by not going to arrest those that are killing them. So, they defend themselves.
On the herdsmen that kidnapped, raided and Chief Olu Falae’s farm ablaze, he said, “My uncle was kidnapped last week in Kaduna, my cousin’s children were also kidnapped and they had to go and find N2.5 million to pay. Why is Olu Falae case different?
“Because he was Secretary to the Federal Government? He is a Nigerian just like my uncle and my cousin whose children were kidnapped. The right of every citizen is important under the law. Why is he so special?
“What about the impunity of the people killing herdsmen? The herdsmen in Nigeria are reacting to the injustice meted out daily to them?
“You people, you Nigerians, including you who are biased, who are not prepared to protect the rights and interests of herdsmen. They are killed but not reported, that is not acceptable.
“Herdsmen operate in these places you mentioned because the country has denied them the traditional routes which the British created for them IN 1914 when they occupied this country because they realised that, like cars require tracks, herdsmen also require tracks they can use to graze and drink water.
“The British provided it for them and gazetted it but people have denied them these routes. So, where do you expect the animals to follow? They have to follow somewhere and the easy road is the one other people are using. We are all living in Nigeria.
Asked if he was trying to justify the menace of herdsmen, he maintained, “I am justifying it very strongly because herdsmen are being unjustly treated in this country.
“They are businessmen just like the farmers whose crops are being destroyed. They should invest in their business; buy ranches like the farmers bought their parcels of land.
They are businessmen. If an Igbo man could go to my state and set up a shop, why shouldn’t herdsmen operate elsewhere? Or are you the one who planted the grass the animals are feeding on? Are you the one who created the water they drink?
“The land belongs to Nigerians and herdsmen are Nigerians. If an Igbo man can go to the North and set up a business, why won’t herdsmen go to the South, including your village, to graze their cattle?
“Where we come from, you don’t pay for land, you only ask for permission to use it. That is why I said you people are biased against other people and that is why the peace of this country will be very difficult.” http://dailypost.ng/2018/02/18/herdsmen-must-kill-ango-abdullahi/

Prior to the news that was posted here some days ago about Nigerian Army killing a vigilante member(Mr. Efe Igbnovia) and freeing suspected herdsmen arrested for robbery along Benin-Abraka expressway. https://www.nairaland.com/4348666/soldiers-kill-vigilante-man-edoToday, the NA are debunking the claim saying they never killed vigilante member nor freed any suspected herdsmen The 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Benin City, has denied killing any vigilante member or freeing any suspected herdsmen in Edo State.
The Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Capt. Mohammed Maidawa, stated this in a statement on Saturday.
He said the attention of the Headquarters 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, had been drawn to a malicious story going round mainstream and social media alleging that soldiers killed a vigilante member and released suspected herdsmen in Edo.
“Ordinarily, one would have dismissed without responding, but for the ethnic undertone attached to the alleged false story.
“We wish to state that the story is not correct as no suspected detained herdsman was set free as being reported in the media.
“Therefore, it is important to put the record straight.
“In the early hours of February 14, our soldiers deployed at Ologbo for pipelines protection received a tip off from locals of a robbery incident.
“Acting on the information, our troops swiftly moved to the area and sighted armed men.
“Our troops fired a warning shot and the armed men responded with gunshots, the soldiers returned fire towards same direction of fire.
“However, on reaching the scene, they discovered a dead body alongside cartridges and a cutlass.
“The body was taken to the nearest police station and was later identified as a vigilante member,” the army spokesman said. http://thenationonlineng.net/army-denies-killing-vigilante-member-edo/Lalasticlala, Mynd
