Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has been appointed into the United Nations (UN) High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation along with 17 other current and former global leaders.
The Secretary-General, Antonio Gutierrez had in September announced the establishment of the board to provide him with advice on mediation initiatives and back specific mediation efforts around the world. The Board is composed of 18 current and former global leaders, senior officials and renowned experts who bring together an unparalleled range of experience, skills, knowledge and contacts.
The Secretary-General explained that the establishment of the Board is part of the “surge in diplomacy for peace” he has consistently advocated, and gives due priority to the prevention and mediation work of the United Nations.
The Board is expected to allow the UN to work more effectively with regional organizations, non-governmental groups and others involved in mediation around the world.
In the announcement of the appointments, the world body described Obasanjo as one of the most distinguished elder statesmen of Africa.
It added: “He served as President of the Republic of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007, and before that as the Head of the Federal Military Government of Nigeria and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces from 1976 to 1979. Over his long career, Mr. Obasanjo has been involved in numerous international mediation efforts, including in Angola, Burundi, Mozambique, Namibia and South Africa.

Firefire: If indeed this statement is coming from Pastor Osinbajo, I am bold to say that he is deranged.
Nigeria went into recession as a result of the policy somersault of the Buhary's administration. FACT!
1. Nigeria as a monocultural economy largely depends on oil revenue. Any fluctuation or drop in the price of crude oil in the international market below the budget benchmark has a frustrating effect on our economy.
2. How the import dependent nation (e.g. Nigeria) administer her FX policy goes a long way to determine the direction of its economy.
- CBN bans deposits into dom accounts. (A misfire approach by this clueless administration) 3. Internal democracy. In the face of reduced revenue on crude oil, sane minds should know that is the best time to maximize your production output. Nigeria has a maximum crude oil daily production capacity of 2.5 million barrels per day, BUT due to the unguided statement & perceived bitterness of Mohomody Buhary towards the oil producing region. "We will deal with Niger Delta militants like we dealt with Boko Haram - PMB", (https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/209422-will-deal-niger-delta-militants-like-dealt-boko-haram-buhari.html) the economic terrorist from the region went into action by bombing the pipelines. Nigeria oil output went as low as 1.2 million barrels per day. I've come to realize that Osinbajo is not that different from Buhari, their reasoning are the same. The only difference between them is that Osinbajo saw the four walls of higher institution, while Buhari only saw the road that led to higher institution but ended up inside the bush |
Politics › UN Commends Jonathan For Electoral Reforms, Lauds His Role In Promoting Peace In by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:29am On Nov 07, 2017 |
The United Nations has commended former President Goodluck Jonathan for the electoral reforms he initiated during his tenure, and for the good works he has been doing to promote peace and stability in Africa.
In extolling Jonathan’s achievements, the UN prayed that the institutions he built and the high standards he established in organising credible and peaceful elections are maintained and sustained in Nigeria. The global organisation made this known during a courtesy call onJonathan last weekend by a delegation led by Ambassador Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, and Chairman of theCameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission (CNMC).
Speaking of the 2015 general elections, Chambas who was accompanied by the UN Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Edward Kallon, commended ex-President Jonathan’s roles in stemming the tide of agitations which threatened Nigeria’s unity ahead of the elections.
He said: “What we noticed in 2015 was that there was a display of maturity in the way the elections were handled. There was hardly any major incident between the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). The problems were mostly internal to parties.”
According to him, the delegation came to express their appreciation to Jonathan for the good works he has been doing to promote democracy, peace, and stability in Africa, adding that the ex-President “still continues to do good with his decision to serve as the leader of one of the election observation missions to the forthcoming presidential run-off in Liberia.”
Chambas further told the former President that the UN was seeking his support to ensure the success of a scheduled all party stakeholders forum similar to the inter-party peace forum which held under the Jonathan Administration.
In his response, former President Jonathan commended Chambas and his team for the initiative and congratulated the special envoy for moving up to a higher platform, after serving as the President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Ex-President Jonathan also commended the UN for its support in election processes in West Africa and in all of Africa, adding that the efforts of ECOWAS leaders had ensured that West Africa had remained relatively peaceful.
He said further: “First let me welcome you and your team. I believe this is a familiar environment for you because you had been with us inmECOWAS. I am happy that you have now gone higher than the ECOWAS level. Let me also, through you and your team, commend what the UN is doing in terms of its proactive approach in sanitising election processes in Africa.”
Jonathan also noted that electoral processes in Nigeria were getting better compared to what it was in the Second Republic when widespread irregularities forced the military to topple elected civilian leaders. The former President further made a case for credible elections in Africa stressing that tensions arising from poorly conducted elections and other leadership issues are at the heart of most crises on the continent.
“Elections must be credible. They must not just be free and fair but must be seen to be transparent and credible. That way peace will reign and sustainable development can take place” Jonathan reiterated his belief in peace and credible election processes, saying that peaceful power transfers remain one of the main focus of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation. He also expressed his readiness to encourage and work with the envoy to achieve its mandate in the area of peace. Ex-President Jonathan stated further that democracy seemed to have stabilised in some African countries including Ghana, South Africa, and Nigeria. http://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2017/11/07/un-commends-jonathan-for-electoral-reforms-lauds-his-role-in-promoting-peace-in-africa/

Politics › Corruption Under Jonathan Caused Recession - VP Osinbajo by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:46am On Nov 07, 2017*. Modified: 6:12am On Nov 07, 2017 |
...Dogara, Tambuwal speaks on poverty, devolution of powersVice-President Yemi Osinbajo, yesterday, said “unbridled corruption’ by the immediate past administration caused recession in the country because the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government failed to create buffers that would have provided the needed stimulus for economic recovery during the turbulent period of recess.
Osinbajo, who stated this in his opening remarks at the Legislative Framework for Economic Recovery and Sustainable Development forum organised by the House of Representatives’ ad hoc Tactical Committee on Economic Recession in Abuja, vowed that Nigeria must never walk that way again.
In a piece titled: “The Nigerian recession: We must never walk this way again,” the vice-president said: “I don’t want to keep repeating some of the incredible things that happened a few weeks before the last elections; how large sums of money, a N100 billion in cash ostensibly for security. Another $289 million in cash was paid out in the same period. No country can survive that kind of unbridled waste and corruption. We must never forget that corruption is perhaps, the most outrageous cause of our economic decline.
“Aside from barefaced stealing or waste of resources, the inflation of contracts and other procurements ensures that the cost of infrastructure necessary for development will always be unaffordable. So, if what we should spend on building a 200 kilometre road ends up being spent on a 20 kilometre road, there is no way we are going to make any progress and there is no way we won’t end up in some kind of economic decline or the other.”
He also blamed the delay in the passage of budgets as a contributory factor in the deepening of the recession, warning that the nation cannot afford to have a strained relationship between the two.
“The truth is that no developing economy can afford the luxury of prolonged executive/legislative wrangling over the budget. Developed economies with strong and independent private sectors may be able to cope, but Nigeria simply cannot.
“Budgetary delay in a situation of national economic emergency, and the hardship encountered by so many, is simply wrong and unacceptable. Neither the executive nor the legislature can excuse itself. It is wrong for us to hold up the budget for that long. The delays of course, will ensure that money will not flow into the economy, and that capital projects will not be done.”
On why Nigeria should never experience it again, he said: “There are two reasons why; the first is so as to ensure that never again, do we experience the horrors and deprivations of a recession, the second is that we cannot afford another recession, not now or in the future,”
Giving a background to the recession, Osinbajo explained that three reasons accounted for it. He said: “One, we were running an unstable economic structure. Oil alone contributed 70 per cent of budgetary revenues and 90 per cent, perhaps more than that, of our foreign exchange revenues. The second weakness in our economic structure is that it had mainly been consumption driven with a high propensity to import. Worse still, we were importing food, food that we could grow. Our unsustainable food importation bill at some point was over N1 trilion, it was particularly damning for the economy as foreign exchange revenues dried up.
“Of course, we all know that there was very little by the way of investment in infrastructure and capital projects. In fact in 2015, capital spend was less than 11 per cent. So, there was very little to show for where this money went.
“Today, we can say that despite the 60 per cent or even more reduction in revenues from oil, we are bailing out the states and our capital spend in 2016 was close to N1.3 trillion, the highest yet in the country’s history. So, with more prudent management, it is possible to do more with far less money.”
The vice-president said Nigeria exited recession because of a “focused and determined leadership,” adding that this found expression is in the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan of Government.
“The results are clear, with oil production now at two million barrels per day (including condensates which are not part of the OPEC quota) and our external reserves now stand at about $34 billion.
“A second plank of immediate actions taken was ensuring that consumption and investment did not contract any further. The Federal Government did paid its own salary obligations and extended support to the states to pay the backlog of salaries.
“In addition, our social intervention programmes put money in the hands of Nigerians through N-Power jobs for young graduates, about 200,000 have been engaged and another 300,000 are in the pipeline for engagement, microcredit loans for market women and artisans, and indirectly, by paying for meals for primary school children through our home grown school feeding programme.
“The capital spend of about N1.3 trillion in the 2016 budget was unprecedented, but it was important in ensuring that money would go into the economy. This capital spend had the dual purpose, one – boosting growth through government spending but also to provide infrastructure to underpin what we hope would be a fast-growing, dynamic and diversified economy.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, who said for Nigeria to put an end to the gale of violence, it must eliminate poverty in the land, assured that the House is committed to providing all needed legislative interventions and measures that will exit Nigeria permanently out of recession, return it to the path of economic growth and development.
His words: “The fight against violence is the fight of the 21st Century. So many nations have lost their civilizations or have become failed states due to violence. Poverty and misery serve as fuel to violence. For citizens of democracy to defeat violence, they must first defeat extreme poverty. Our democracy cannot survive the 21st century, unless we eliminate extreme poverty and violence.
“Therefore, the most important work for democracy now is eliminating extreme poverty and expanding economic opportunities for all. This is a fight government alone cannot win. In fact, government has never won this fight. It is the private sector that always wins the fight. Our citizens and indeed all democratic Institutions must stand up and be counted. For us in the parliament, today’s event is expected to serve as our modest contribution to this noble fight for democracy and progress.”
He explained that the Ad hoc Committee on Economic Recession was set up following a concurrent resolutions of both chambers of the National Assembly to among others, monitor the various steps and policies of government on the subject; interact with relevant stakeholders towards overcoming the challenges and to help develop legislative responses to efforts by key actors designed to return our economy to the path of growth and stability.
Chairman of the occasion and governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, called for devolution of powers to the state to engender sustainable economic growth across the country.
According to him, “the truth is that we must find ways to get more money to the tiers of government that are closer to the people so that our economic policies will be more effective”
He noted that although the nation had technically exited recession, the margin is still fragile hence the government and all stakeholders must work assiduously to ensure that the country does not fall into the unfortunate economic trap again. “I believe that in order to have sustainable development, the states and Federal Government must be on the same page. The need for fiscal federalism cannot therefore be over emphasized.
“I therefore, hope this conference will consider how critical devolution of powers is in the context of sustainable growth. We must close the gap between the needs of the states and the policy framework of the Federal Government. Proper devolution will engender better synchronization between the centre and other components of the federation. It is then that the crucial welfare programmes mean to cushion the effect of the recession can have better means of success,” he said. https://newtelegraphonline.com/2017/11/corruption-jonathan-caused-recession-osinbajo/Lalasticlala, Mynd44 |

Politics › 2019 Elections Will Be Free, Fair - Presidency Assures Nigerians, Int'l Communit by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:07pm On Nov 06, 2017 |
The Presidency on Monday assured Nigerians and the international community that the 2019 general elections will be free and fair.
It also said the 2015 general election was credible just because of the then chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed these in a statement made available to journalists.
Shehu was reacting to a United Nation’s prediction that 2019 elections in Nigeria will be credible and violent-free.
He described the prediction as yet another indication of the world’s confidence in Nigeria’s current administration.
A United Nations representative was said to have made the prediction in a Channels TV interview.
Shehu expressed pleasure at what he called the world body’s accurate observation of the trends in President Muhammadu Buhari’s government, which he said could only lead down the path of free and fair elections come 2019.
He said, “The Buhari government doesn’t believe in cheap propaganda.
“It is not about responding to the attacks, false allegations, and insinuations of the PDP or of the still very active media machinery of the previous government.
“We believe in taking active steps to ensure that the future of Nigeria is better than it is today and we are glad to see that the United Nations has acknowledged this.
“Under the government of President Buhari, a number of credible elections have been conducted in states and local governments across Nigeria and, so far, there has been no cause for fear or worry.” http://punchng.com/2019-elections-will-be-free-fair-presidency/ |

Foreign Affairs › 26 Dead Nigerian Women Found In Spanish Warship.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 7:29pm On Nov 06, 2017 |
Italian prosecutors have commenced investigations into the deaths of 26 Nigerian women whose bodies were recovered at sea, BBC reported on Monday.
The victims, who are mostly teenagers, aged 14-18, are believed to have been sexually abused and murdered as they attempted to cross the Mediterranean.
Following several rescues, their bodies were discovered in a Spanish warship, Cantabria, carrying 375 migrants and the dead women; 23 of whom women had been on a rubber boat with 64 other people.
Italian media reported that the women’s bodies were being kept in a refrigerated section of the warship. Most of the 375 survivors brought to Salerno were sub-Saharan Africans from Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, The Gambia and Sudan.
Among the 375 survivors were 90 women, eight of them pregnant, 52 children and some Libyan men and women on board.
People-smuggling gangs charge each migrant about $6,000 (£4,578) to get to Italy, $4,000 of which is for the trans-Saharan journey to Libya and many migrants have reported violence, including torture and sexual abuse, by the gangs. Five migrants are being questioned in the southern port of Salerno.
Thousands of Nigerians travel through the desert to Libya from where they try to cross the Mediterranean to Italy seeking better life.
Hundreds of such Nigerians, who could not make the crossing, end up getting trapped in Libya with many of them eventually returning to Nigeria with the help of the International Organisation for Migration. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/248485-26-dead-nigerian-women-found-in-spanish-warship.htmlhtml
