Politics › Nigeria Set To Benefit From Bill Gates $776m Hunger Fund- PM News by BeeBeeOoh(op): 2:18pm On Jun 04, 2015
Melinda Gates announced on Thursday that her and husband Bill’s foundation will spend $776 million tackling hunger in Nigeria and four other countries over the next six years, doubling existing commitments.

Gates made the announcement in Brussels, where she urged European leaders to make the nutrition of women and children a priority. The huge pledge also unlocks $180 million in matched funding from Britain’s Department for International Development.

“Malnutrition is the underlying cause of nearly half of all under-5 child deaths,” said Gates. “Yet for too long the world has underinvested in nutrition. Today we see an opportunity to change that.”

Much of the money will be spent in India, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Burkina Faso, where there is serious malnutrition and a real chance to make positive changes, the foundation said.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the world’s largest private philanthropy organization, with a $40 billion endowment. It aims to tackle disease and poverty in the developing world. Bill Gates earned his billions as co-founder of Microsoft.

Every year millions of children die because they get substandard nutrition during the critical 1,000-day period from their mother becoming pregnant until their second birthday, the foundation said in a statement.

“Many European donors are now prioritizing nutrition, which we believe will be one of the fundamental solutions to help cut child mortality in half by 2030,” said Melinda Gates.

The extra funding announced in Brussels will aim to help women and girls before they get pregnant, improving the likelihood of a healthy mother and child. It will also be spent on solutions “proven to improve nutrition” including fortifying food and promoting breastfeeding.

Women and girls play a crucial role in reducing poverty and improving health, Gates said. “From their leadership as farmers, entrepreneurs and consumers to their role as mothers; investment in women and girls will be key to improving nutrition globally.”

United Nations member states aim to agree in September a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), targets for making progress and reducing inequality in areas such as poverty, health, education, women’s rights and climate change by 2030.

Politics › Police Rescues Abducted Kogi State Commissioner- The Punch by BeeBeeOoh(op):
JUNE 4, 2015 : NAN

The Police in Kogi on Thursday announced the rescue of the state Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr. Stephen Maiyaki, who was abducted on May 30.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Shola Adebayo, said in a statement in Lokoja that Maiyaki was rescued at about 2am from the kidnappers hideout at Abobo village in Adavi Local Government area of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the commissioner and six other persons were abducted at Osara village also in Adavi local government while there to resolve a land dispute.

The statement said Maiyaki had been reunited with his family but was silent on the fate of the other six persons abducted along with him.

It was also silent on the fate of Justice Samuel Obayomi of the state High Court who was abducted in the same local government area on May 25.

The kidnappers had killed the policeman attached to the High Court Judge before taking him away.

The judge was on his way to court when he was kidnapped by six masked men.

Already, judiciary workers and lawyers in the state have embarked on strike in protest over his abduction.

The police command in the state has since deployed units of mobile policemen and special anti-robbery squad to areas where Obayomi and others are believed to be held by the abductors.

Romance › Does Anybody Here Agree This Quote That Women Are In Charge Of Dating? by BeeBeeOoh(op): 4:44pm On Jun 03, 2015
What are your thoughts on this?:

I got this quote from a woman that is a dating coach and matchmaker, her name is Amy Laurent, and yes she is like 99 percent of women who stubbornly, adamantly insist that the man should do the pursuing, approaching, asking out, making the first move, etc.

She says that even though the man is taking the lead, doing the leading. Because many people argue and say that since the man typically does the leading, takes the lead, does the approaching and asking out, makes the first move, that means he is the one in charge, in control, but not according to her, here is her quote:

"All the decisions and power lies where the woman sets the boundaries by saying “Yes”
or “No” to things. It’s the woman that sets the pace, sets the parameters, and dictates how she will be treated and looked at by the man (for instance, are you a casual play-thing or relationship/girlfriend material?) This is all up to the woman, and the woman has the most control via means of her “influence.” A misconception is to view it the other way. The core of power does not come from the one who is initiating (the man)."

Do you agree or disagree with that quote?

Crime › Ondo Policemen Kill Driver In Custody, Label Him Armed Robber- The Punch by BeeBeeOoh(op): 4:21pm On Jun 03, 2015
JUNE 3: ADE AKANBI, AKURE

A member of the Ondo State Chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, identified as Gbenga Omolo, has died after being allegedly tortured by some policemen attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the state Police Command.

A source in the union told our correspondent on Wednesday that the 70-year-old man was arrested by SARS last Thursday following a misunderstanding between him and a police officer, whose name was not disclosed, leading to the duo engaging blows at the Arakale area of the town.

The source explained that the following day, the policeman, who fought with the motorist, mobilised six men of the SARS to arrest the deceased and some other people in the area and detained them in their custody, where Omolo was allegedly being tortured.

In detention, the source alleged that Omolo was tortured by the policemen until he died in their custody.

According to the source, when the family members of deceased visited the station, located on Oda Road, Akure, to secure his bail, the men on duty demanded N150,000, which they said they could not afford at that time.

On Tuesday morning , however, it was gathered that the branch chairman of union, identified as Muyiwa, went to the station with N100,000 to bail his detained member, but was informed that the man had died in SARS custody and his remains had been deposited at the mortuary.

Shortly after, the source added that the family visited the mortuary, where the remains of the deceased was deposited with a label on his body, indicating that he was an armed robber.

Meanwhile, the state Public Relations Officer, Mr Wole Ogodo, was said to be unavailable for comment as of the time of filing this report.

A source in the command told our correspondent on Wednesday that all the policemen involved in the incident had been arrested and detained at the police headquarters along Igbatoro Road, Akure.

The family of the deceased also declined to speak with our correspondent on the matter as they said the state commissioner of police, Mr Isaac Eke, had invited them to his office for deliberation on the matter.

Politics › We've Evidence To Probe Senior Nigerian Military Officers- Vanguard by BeeBeeOoh(op): 4:10pm On Jun 03, 2015
Amnesty International said Wednesday there was sufficient evidence for the International Criminal Court to probe senior Nigerian military officers for war crimes in the battle against Boko Haram.  The group stated the case against five senior officers in a new 133-page report based on hundreds of interviews, including with military sources and leaked defence ministry documents.

Members of the court martial sit during the inauguration to try soldiers accused of mutiny tasked with fighting Boko Haram militants in Abuja on October 2, 2014. Nearly 100 soldiers tasked with fighting Boko Haram militants in Nigeria’s far northeast appeared at a military court martial on Thursday, facing a range of charges including mutiny. The hearing comes just weeks after a tribunal sentenced 12 soldiers to death following their conviction for shooting at their commanding officer in the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, in May.

The allegations centre on thousands of people Amnesty claimed were extra-judically murdered by the security forces and its civilian vigilante allies, as well as crimes against those held in military custody. “In the course of security operations against Boko Haram in north-east Nigeria, Nigerian military forces have extrajudicially executed more than 1,200 people; they have arbitrarily arrested at least 20,000 people, mostly young men and boys,” the report said.

Nigerian forces “have committed countless acts of torture; hundreds, if not thousands, of Nigerians have become victims of enforced disappearance; and at least 7,000 people have died in military detention as a result of starvation, extreme overcrowding and denial of medical assistance,” it added.
Amnesty said commanders based in the northeast “should be investigated for potential responsibility for war crimes of murder, enforced disappearances and torture”. Top service chiefs in the capital Abuja “should be investigated for their potential command responsibility for crimes committed by their subordinates given that they knew or should have known about the commission of the crimes, and failed to take adequate action”.

The ICC in The Hague has opened a preliminary investigation into the Boko Haram conflict, which Amnesty said has killed at least 17,000 people since 2009.  The tribunal has previously said there was insufficient evidence tying Nigeria’s military to systematic and orchestrated atrocities targeting civilians.
But the report said: “Amnesty International believes that the evidence contained in this report and submitted separately to the (ICC) Office of the Prosecutor is sufficient to reopen this issue.” The group said it had separately shared its evidence with the ICC prosecutor’s office.

Amnesty’s latest report includes new claims on specific acts of murder committed by Nigerian soldiers in the northeast but the general subject matter is not new.
Amnesty, Human Rights Watch and independent reporting, including by AFP, has found evidence of arbitrary killing, unlawful detention and torture in custody of alleged Boko Haram suspects.

The government of former president Goodluck Jonathan was repeatedly pressured to try all Boko Haram suspects in court.
New President Muhammadu Buhari said after taking the oath of office on Friday that he would review the military’s rules of engagement in a bid to end concerns of rights violations by soldiers.  He also promised to improve “operational and legal mechanisms so that disciplinary steps are taken against proven human right violations by the Armed Forces”.
