FROM ISAAC ANUMIHE, ABUJA Following 50 per cent drop in revenue, inflation and the high cost of living, the Federal Government has commenced the review of the Remuneration Act which will affect what the president, vice president, governors, and others will earn. The review will also affect the remunerations of other political officeholders including the ministers, the National Assembly members and the judiciary. Speaking exclusively to Daily Sun at the weekend, Chairman of Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Elias Mbam, said the review is undergoing a process to determine whether it will be reviewed upward or downward. He, however, noted that given the harsh realities on ground, the 2008 Remuneration Act must be reviewed. “The commission is not insensitive to the realities on ground. There is a drop in the oil price, there is a general economic downward trend. Many states are even finding it difficult to pay salaries. In view of this situation, the commission has commenced the review of the remuneration of the present Act of 2008 and by the time we conclude, we will make public our position with regard to the new Remuneration Act,” he said. Mbam said the commission will consider other things in tandem with what is happening in other parts of the world. “The thing is that we are not working in isolation of other parts of the world. We are also looking at what is obtainable elsewhere. What is being paid in the private sector. What type of work do you do? What are the risks? Does the work require the allowance that you are earning? What are the shortcomings of the present Remuneration Act? What is the rate of inflation? So, it is not something you just say, increase or decrease. But certainly, there will be some changes,” he emphasized. On the time-frame of the new remuneration law, the chairman said it should come up with a new proposal before the end of the third quarter. “It is before the end of September because when we come out with our new proposal, it will still go through the National Assembly for the executive arm of the government. But for the legislators, our determined emolument is final. When we conclude, whatever we decide for the legislators is final. But that of the executive will still go through legislative process. But whatever they will decide finally will not be more than what the commission decided,” Mbam noted.. At the moment, the President earns N3.51 million per year, Vice President (N3.03 million), Minister (N2.02 million), Minister of State (N1.95 million) and Special Adviser (N1.94 million), Governor (N2.22 million), Deputy Governor (N2.11 million), and Commissioners (N1.33 million). http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=122687 Cc: lalasticlala, Ngakwe, Ishilove

Kazeem Ugbodaga Like his predecessor, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has shunned the use of siren, saying he does not want to harass Lagosians with its use. In Nigeria, the use of siren is a status symbol of political office holders, especially governors and the rest. To them, it is the highest form exhibition of authority and superiority to use the siren to oppress motorists on the road. Since he assumed office a week ago, the governor has refused to use the siren, preferring to stay in traffic rather than harass the citizens with siren. Last week, while travelling to Abuja, Ambode remained in the heavy traffic on Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja for about 30 minutes, refusing to use the siren. Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Habib Aruna, when asked why the governor had shunned the use of siren, said this was the style he wanted to adopt in governing Lagos State and assured that in the next four years, the governor’s convoy would not blare the siren. Aruna stated that the governor did not believe in using the siren to oppress people on the road, saying that what is paramount was to deliver good governance to the people of Lagos State. According to him, Ambode had made it clear to his aides that he would tolerate anyone in his convoy blaring the siren as he detests it, adding that he was elected to serve the people and not to lord it over them. “In fact, last Tuesday, when the governor was going to the airport to travel to Abuja, he was held up in traffic on Awolowo Way, Ikeja for about 30 minutes. He did not use the siren to pave way for himself. “He just remained in the traffic patiently for 30 minutes. People who saw him in the traffic were hailing him for being a good example and wished him well,” Aruna said. Former Governor, Babatunde Fashola had adopted the same style as he did not use the siren all through the eight years he was in office as governor. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/06/08/ambode-dumps-siren/

The group, in the suit filed pursuant to Order 26 Rule 8 of the Federal High Court Civil Procedure Rules, 2009, is contending that Hon. Aside Gbajabiamila, the House of Representatives and the Attorney General of the Federation were equally cited as defendants in the matter. Nmerengira averred: “That I am the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the plaintiff organization by virtue of which I am very conversant with the facts deposed herein. “That the 1st defendant is a member of the House of Representatives who nurses the ambition of becoming the Speaker of the House in the next Assembly. That the 2nd defendant is the constitution body created to carry out legislative functions for the good governance and advancement of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “That the 3rd defendant is the Chief Law Officer of the Federation that ensures the sue enforcement of our Laws so that the nation does not fall into the pit of lawlessness. “That as a sensible and responsible organisation, my board deemed it proper that to achieve the objective of the organisation, that we should intervene in public interest litigation in deserving situations. “That few days ago it came to the public domain that the 1st defendant was a leading candidate to the position of the office of Speaker of the House of Representatives. “That my organisation, following the wind of change that has pervaded the political environment in Nigeria, deemed it proper to carry out a background check on the leading candidates for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives. [b]“That I discovered that the 1st defendant was a lawyer and practiced in the United States of America, particularly in the state of Georgia. “That upon further enquiry, I discovered that the 1st defendant was convicted in the state of Georgia for unethical practices and was debarred for 36 months. A copy of the order of the Supreme Court of Georgia to that effect is hereby attached and marked ‘Exhibit A'”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/breaking-news-speakership-court-asked-to-disqualify-gbajabiamila-over-us-indictment/
