US Visa Data: Ghana overtakes Nigeria in latest United States visa overstay report

According to the report, Ghana is ahead of Nigeria in abuse of B1/B2 and F,M, and others

Mon, 18 Nov 2024Source: mynewsgh.com

A United States Government Report on Visa Overstays for the year 2023 shows Ghana is ahead of Nigeria in abuse of B1/B2 and F, M, and J Non-Immigrant Visas for the period October 2022 to September 2023.

The latest report sighted by MyNewsGh.com breaks down the overstay rates to provide a better picture of those who abused their visas to remain in the United States beyond their period of admission and for whom there is no identifiable evidence of a departure, an extension of the period of admission, or transition to another immigration status.

Other categories of overstays overstayed their visa (beyond the permitted 6 months or less) but eventually left after the overstay, all of which is captured in the latest report.

Overall, at the end of Financial Year 2023, there were 510,363 Suspected In-Country Overstays, which represents 1.31% of expected departures, and there were 54,792 Out-of-Country Overstays, representing 0.14% of expected departures.

Ghana B1/B2, FMJ Visa Overstay Rate

In 2023, according to the report, 25,454 B1B2 visas were issued to Ghanaians, out of which 1,910 overstayed, representing a 7.50% rate of abuse.

This category refers to Nonimmigrant Ghanaians Admitted to the United States for Business or Pleasure via Air and Sea Point of Entry.

For other overstay Rates for Nonimmigrant Ghanaians Admitted to the US as Students and Exchange Visitors (F, M, J), the figures show an abuse rate of 21% as 2,559 visas were issued with 537 of the number overstaying and remaining in the US.

For some perspective, in 2019, before the pandemic, Ghanaians received 28,844 B1B2 visas, out of which 1,723 overstayed, representing a 5.09% abuse rate, compared to 2018, when Ghanaians received 23,486 B1B2 Visas and 875 overstayed, representing 3.73%.

The 2019 overstay rate for student visas was 12.7%, as 2,762 visas were issued and 352 overstayed.

Nigeria and the rest of Africa Visa Overstay Rates

In 2023, Nigerians had 84,051 B1B2 visas issued, out of which 6,000 Nigerians overstayed, representing 7.14% compared to Ghana’s 7.50%.

Nigerian students and Exchange visitors had 7,556 FMJ visas issued in 2023, out of which 1,179, representing 15.60%, overstayed compared to Ghana’s 21% overstay rate for the same visa category.

Before the pandemic in 2019, Nigeria had 177,835 B1B2 visas issued, out of which 17,566, representing 9.88%, refused to return. Student visas for the same year for Nigerians stood at 9,336, but 1,254, or 13.43%, refused to return.

From the data, Ghanaians had a relatively better US visa record than Nigerians before the pandemic.

For the 2023 year, Mali had a visa abuse rate of 5.27%, Ivory Coast at 7.48%, Togo at 19%, Burkina Faso at 12.13%; Niger at 7.41%, Uganda and Sierra Leone at 8.4% and 15.4% respectively.

An overstay is defined as a nonimmigrant who was lawfully admitted to the United States but remained in the United States beyond the authorized period of admission. This can be a fixed period or for the duration of a certain activity, such as the period during which a student is pursuing a full course of study or any authorized technical/practical training program.

US Customs and Border Protection identifies two types of overstays: 1) individuals for whom no departure was recorded (Suspected In-Country Overstays) and 2) individuals whose departure was recorded after their authorized period of admission expired (Out-of-Country Overst

It is a shame that okomu oil company pays over N12b annually in taxes to the federal government, yet the government cannot provide security for such a company... What a country we live in. And the management of the company is threatening to shut down operations if the government refuses to act.
CrimeIjaw Freedom Fighter Unleash Mayhem In Okomu Oil Community (graphics Pics) by BEJV(op): 9:24am On May 14, 2024
Ijaw Freedom fighters have wreaked havoc on Okomu Oil Palm’s neighbouring community in Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State. The attack resulted in the death of one of the community members with seven vehicles and three houses burnt while other members of the community suffered various degrees of injuries.

A few days ago, The Nigerian Observer reported that there was an attack on Okomu premises which led to the death of three plantation workers. According to the members of the community, this latest attack is connected to last week’s attacks on Okomu Oil Palm’s facilities which left three of the company’s plantation workers dead.

Some eyewitnesses who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent that they believed the attack on the community was because the majority of the residents of the community are workers of the company.

The eyewitness revealed that the attackers arrived at the community at about 12:15am on Monday morning, shooting sporadically into the air before unleashing terror on the community.

They added that the attackers thereafter went around the community where they burnt down two trucks used to convey workers from the community to Okomu, one 15-seater bus, and four cars.

The attackers also razed down three houses belonging to members of the community, macheted a prominent community leader who is currently in critical condition in the hospital and killed a man who was relaxing in front of his house.

One of the victims who gave his name as Peter, whose car was burnt by the attackers said he was woken up by the heavy gunfire in the community. He added that the attackers later broke the windscreen of his truck, and deflated the tyres before setting it ablaze.

Peter said, “initially when I woke up, after hearing the heavy gunfire, I looked through the window and all I could see were armed men going towards my truck, destroying the glasses before setting it on fire.

“When I heard them coming towards my house, I had to run by scaling through the window into the nearest Catholic Church for safety until the early morning.”

The attackers after macheting the victim left a note on his body with a list of demands addressed to the Edo State Government.

According to the note, they are demanding the creation of an Ijaw Local Government Area in Edo State; recognition of their right as not slaves to the Bini people; the call for the Binis to leave Ijaw land and a call for the board of Okomu Oil Palm Company Plc to accord them their rightful place in the company.

According to the letter the attackers who claimed to be members of Ijaw Freedom Fighters said they are ready to unleash more mayhem on the local government area if their requests are not immediately attended to.

It was learnt that some members of the community deserted their homes while others who said they have nowhere to go are calling on the state and federal governments to immediately send security personnel to the area as they are afraid the attackers could return to unleash mayhem as promised in the note they left behind.

The students lamented the South Africans’ threat against the goalkeeper, saying football should rather “promote friendship and not bitterness.”

“We have played in different tournaments where the Super Eagles have lost. We never channelled or blamed our performance on any country or persons outside our country.

“We have always been a chief promoter of the spirit of sportsmanship as this remains a solid avenue to spread love across the countries of the world. But we will at no time fold our arms and watch bad losers pounce on our brother for petty reasons like this.”

This is my personal opinion. I feel this is actually one of the best organized Afcon if we are to consider some criterias, such as organization, quality of stadiums, media, officiating, quality and standard of play, VAR, etc...

So what is your own personal opinion?
