What about Dates?

Date palm which is scientifically known as Phoenix dactylifera is a popular flowering plant in the Middle East and North Africa which is cultivated for its edible sweet fruit. Although its place of origin is not known, it is arguably believed to have evolved from Egypt.

Date palm obtained its name from two Greek words dactylos which means “date or finger” and fero, which means “to bear”- dactylifera “date-bearing”. The fruit’s name is as a result of the fruit elongated shape and it is commonly known as dates.

Dates vary in size, shape, color, texture, and flavor depending on the variety. The fruits are oval/cylindrical, when ripe; its color ranges from bright red to bright yellow depending on the variety. Just like mangoes, dates contain a single seed called stone.

In Nigeria date fruits are commonly known as Debino. However, it is paramount to know that date palm cultivation is poorly known in southern Africa because the plant does better in arid regions whose weather/climate conditions are very favorable to the plant and ever-present in the Middle East and North Africa.

Egypt is the highest distributor and producer of date fruits globally. Other producers are from Asia countries such as Iraq. Dates can be eaten raw, dried, or in combination with other food/dairy products such as milk and yogurt etc.

The fruit is believed to be a balanced diet as it contains the most vital nutrients and can be used to prevent malnutrition in children. Most specialists suggest eating dates daily is one way to keep the body healthy especially in times of injury.

Dates are very nutritious and vital for so many bodily functions such as the heart, brain, muscle, etc. and also for the prevention of other body abnormalities. Dates are eaten for breakfast as it helps to prevent eating too much after fasting periods.

Dates are also believed to fight off various disease conditions affecting the Ear, Nose, and Throat. The leaves of date palms are made into powder and rubbed around these organs to fight off various conditions.

Ingesting the fruit also has a similar effect especially when soaked over-night.

Traditionally, dates are used to reduce alcoholic intoxication. It acts swiftly and very effective against ingesting the harmful amount of alcoholic drink. However, it should be noted that the best results are obtained from debino when soaked in water over night.
