Report has indicated that the price of 50 kilogramme bag ofricehas dropped following the rebound of the naira against major currencies....READ FULL ARTICLE Naija News understands that a price of bag of rice has dropped to an average of ₦67,000 in Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, and others, from about ₦90,000 in February 2024. According to a report from Punch, Ogun border communities like Imeko, Idiroko, Oja-Odan, and others, now sell a bag of rice for around ₦49,000 or below. According to Mayowa Tosho, a bag of rice now sells for ₦42,000 at Saki, a border community in Oyo State. Selected rice sellers in Agege and Oshodi markets in Lagos State said the price of rice had been reduced to between ₦65,000 and ₦63,000 compared to December 2023 and January 2024, when the staple was sold between ₦75,000 and ₦80,000. In Oshodi, Ogechukwu Amadi noted that she bought a bag of rice between ₦74,000 and ₦76,000 in December and sold it for ₦83,000 during the period. According to Amadi, she now buys rice for around ₦60,000 and sells it for ₦63,000. “Our purchase rate will always determine our selling price. In most cases, wholesalers usually add about ₦2,000 to their selling price, and this has caused non-uniformity in the prices traders sell in the market. “In December, I was buying between ₦74,000 and ₦76,000. But I now sell for ₦65,000 and sometimes ₦62,000, depending on who sold the stock to me,”she stated. Another trader in the Agege market, who simply identified himself as Ade, confirmed that the price of the 50kg bag of rice had been reduced to around ₦60,000. “We can only thank God that the hardship is not as serious as it was in February. Rice practically turned gold, but we thank God today. I wish it could return to ₦40,000,” he said. Similarly, the price of a 50kg bag of rice dropped in different parts of Ogun State. It was gathered that the prices differ based on the proximity of the areas to the borders with the Republic of Benin, as communities like Imeko, Ilara, Idiroko, Ipokia, Oja-Odan, and others get the commodity cheaper. “I bought one bag of rice for ₦47,000 in Ilara last week. It was close to ₦70,000 in February and March, even here at the border. But now it is coming down,”a trader, who identified herself as Adeyinka, said on Monday. Friday Igwe, who sells foodstuffs along Iperu Junction, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, said that the price of rice had dipped to ₦65,000, from ₦88,000 between February and March, while it was ₦55,000 in December 2023. He, however, lamented that the prices of beans and garri had continued to increase. “The price of rice is coming down. As of today, we sell at ₦65,000 per 50kg bag. Some can even sell at ₦64,000. It peaked at ₦88,000 or even ₦90,000 in February and March, from around ₦55,000 in December. “We thank God that it is coming down now. But, the prices of beans and garri are not reducing; instead, they keep rising. The government should do something about it,”Igwe noted. The Ebonyi State indigene noted that the high cost of food items had affected patronage, saying only a few could afford a small plastic of rice at ₦2,400 instead of ₦700 in October last year. Another trader along Sagamu Road, Adamu disclosedthat the price of a bag of rice was now ₦65,000. “The price of rice has dropped. In February, we were selling it for between ₦80,000 and N85,000; but it has now dropped to ₦65,000. But the prices of garri and beans did not reduce,”he remarked. A resident of Oluwo, Abeokuta, Olubokola Odunayo, said she bought a bag of parboiled rice for ₦65,000 on April 1. An Islamic scholar, Sulaimon Adewale, said that a bag of rice was ₦52,000 in Abeokuta last week before it jumped to over ₦60,000 when the naira slipped again. At the Wuse market in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, the price of a bag of ‘Pretty Lady’ brand of rice dipped to ₦65,000 from ₦70,000, while Big Bull dropped to ₦68,000 from ₦80,000 a few weeks ago. The prices were uniform across many vendors in the market. At the Dutse Market in the Bwari Area Council of Abuja, a 50kg bag of Optimum rice sold for between ₦68,000 and ₦71,000, with half of the bag priced between ₦34,000 and ₦36,000, while a bag of Mama Gold rice costs ₦82,000, compared to the previous prices of ₦76,000 in December. According to a trader, Obiem, a bag of 50kg Optimum rice was sold for ₦42,000 last October. “I bought this same bag of rice last October at N42,000 when I had a major family event. Now, I have to buy half of that same bag of rice for nearly the same price. If it is coming down, I can’t tell because I was charged N68,000 for a full bag,”he said.… https://www./2024/04/23/bag-of-rice-now-sold-for-%E2%82%A642000-%E2%82%A649000-see-states/#:~:text=According%20to%20a%20report%20from,border%20community%20in%20Oyo%20State. |

First Bank of Nigeria has appointed Olusegun Alebiosu as its acting managing director, two sources with knowledge of the development told Premium Times on Sunday. Alebiosu has been the bank’s executive director/chief risk officer since 2022. He has been in the bank’s employ for nearly three decades, with expertise in credit marketing, trade, corporate and commercial banking, credit risk management among others. Mr Alebiosu takes the crown from Adesola Adeduntan, who gave up the role abruptly on Saturday even though he was due to complete his tenure in December. The decision to appoint Mr Alebiosu was reached on Sunday after a Saturday board meeting of the bank could not resolve the controversy surrounding Mr Adeduntan’s resignation. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/04/just-in-firstbank-appoints-olusegun-alebiosu-as-new-md-ceo/amp/ |

Labour Party Has More Promise Than APC In 2023 Election, Says Daniel Bwala Daniel Bwala Daniel Bwala, former spokesman of the defunct Atiku-Okowa Presidential Campaign Council, has described Peter Obi, Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, as a political harlot. According to him, like Judas Iscariot, Obi betrayed Odumegu Ojukwu, the late Biafra warlord, as well as Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He made the claim on his X handle while sharing a video of Obi vowing never to leave the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA. “Take a listen to @PeterObi in APGA vowing if he leaves APGA let his family die; this is before he embarked on his political olosho. “He has since moved from APGA to PDP to LP and is now planning to move to SDP. “He betrayed Odimegwu Ojukwu, he betrayed Atiku Abubakar and now planning to betray Pat Utomi and co. “This Easter period we celebrate the decorated Judas Iscariot. Hear in this video an Obi-erodent making excuses for him, but they would not understand with anyone else,” he posted. |

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi, has expressed deep concerns over the perennial power situation in the country recording 141 times of national grid collapse in 11 years and calls for urgent pragmatic solutions. Obi said Nigeria has only 13,000mw while the demands are about 200,000mw. He said even with the 13,000mw, only about 3,500mw are available for homes and businesses noting that the situation puts Nigeria as the lowest per capita wattage in the world. In an article, titled: “The Collapsing Electricity Sector”, the LP standard’s bearer said, “The Nigeria electricity supply industry faces real and present danger of collapse despite the efforts made in more than two decades to initiate a reform of the NESI. “It is sad today that we suffer periodic and routine system collapses that are attributed to such avoidable situations as fire outbreaks at critical transmission lines across our major cities. It is absolutely distressing and a story of a low level of managerial capability that the entire nation can be plunged into total darkness for a reasonable period because networks go out because of a lack of diligent attention.” A statement by his media aide, Yunusa Tanko, said: “It should worry any Nigerian patriot that the total installed capacity for a country of more than 200 million people with an aspiration to become a global medium economy power is a mere 13,000. Worse still, only about 3,500mws are available for homes and businesses from the grid. Sometimes, it grinds to less than 2,500mws. This is unacceptable. “We can contrast the available supply of electricity with competitor countries in Africa like Egypt and South Africa with respective populations of approximately 112m and 59.6m people supplying about 60,000mw and 58,000 respectively. This difference in energy wattage has massive implications for human development and economic growth. Nigeria today has the world’s lowest per capita wattage in the world, interestingly lower than those of most of our West African neighbours. It is really sad that whereas our energy demand is above 200,000mws, we have only 13,000mw installed capacity and can only deliver less than 4,000mw regularly. “After speaking with experts in the sector I have realized that the crisis of power supply in Nigeria relates to two major sectors: (1) generation, and (2) transmission and distribution. The major challenges of the generation sector are the lack of a regular supply of gas arising from the failure of the government in the last 8 years to provide adequate gas infrastructure facilities, weak commerciality of gas to power and failure to control the restiveness of angry youths leading to vandalism. “It is shameful that for more than 8 years we cannot resolve the infrastructural bottlenecks that constrain the supply of gas to power plants despite billions from CBN for legacy gas debts. “On the transmission and distribution side, the last 8 years have witnessed terrible failure to overcome the deterioration of networks and transmission and distribution networks and invest in modern technologies like SCADA leading to poor coverage, lack of effective coordination between TCN and discos leading to load rejection and inability to generate public trust for policy reform on tariff and leading to low private sector investments. “If we had a good project manager, we would have massively increased generation, transmission and distribution capacity and enhanced policy coherence that would have crowded private sector investment in the degree to sustained rapid growth of the grid. The problem is that the government has exercised the required political will to appoint the right kind of leadership that understands the problems of the sector and has the singular dedication and competence to create quick wins in the short term and transformation in the medium to long term,” he said. |
