WELCOME ADDRESS BY SENATOR BABAFEMI OJUDU AT THE PRESENTATION OF THE BOOK ‘POLITICS THAT WORKS’ ON THE 4TH OCTOBER 2021.

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the presentation of the book Politics That Works and the bringing together of the old and aspiring politicians to discuss the future of politics in our dear nation.

1.Nigerian is ripe for transitioning; the appetite of the nation is sharply changing and craving more youthful, innovative and genuine governance. The future we desire for our dear nation is anchored on the mobilization, equipping and positioning of more youthful minds in position of power to transform our political space and to creatively upgrade our public sector, to the point where it can rub shoulders with first world nations. This is why we are here today.

2.The future of politics is one that is driven by young people, organized by technology, and fired by a competitive pursuit for world standard excellence.

3.The underlying motive behind the argument put forward by this book is a better future for Nigeria and that future can only be made possible by a new kind of politics. In our political history, since the formal creation of Nigeria, there have been three major eras. Each new era was the result of the toil, sweat and blood of a generation that chose to stand out.

4.First, we had the colonial era. The age of the British rule, where men- the likes of our grandfathers and fathers- the Chief Obafemi Awolowos, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Micheal , Imoudu, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello, Bello Ijumu, Mrs Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, Madam Margaret Ekpo fought in their time for independence and came out victorious. It was this generation that handed over to us an independent nation.

5.Next was the era of military rule. The ones who seized power and rode roughshod over us and took away our freedom to choose . The next generation, those currently between ages 40 and 70, threw themselves in with everything they had and fought them really hard. Some were slain, others were incarcerated for many years, while some others fled the country to stay alive. This was a fight that had me arrested about 15 times, and on one of those times, locked up in solitary confinement for eight months, wearing only a single piece of clothing.

6.Those days are still fresh in our memory. The harrowing tales of the experience of fellow comrades linger in our thoughts,
a sad reminder of the dark days.

7.That was a fight for freedom that had our newspapers and magazines operating in the dark, shifting base from pillar to post, as they were declared prohibited and the operators declared wanted by the military government.

8.The newspaper operations became a mobile enterprise in what has come to be known as Guerrilla Journalism. It was a fight that had my colleague Kunle Ajibade and Chris Anyanwu jailed for life for a coup they knew nothing about; a fight that killed many of my comrades and colleagues, including my enterprising correspondent in Kaduna Mr Bagauda Kaltho.

9.The list is of the victims of this epoch is endless and the harrowing cries from the cells of fellow inmates sometimes still keep me awake. That fight also had people like Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Wole Soyinka, Dapo Olorunyomi, Bayo Onanuga, General Alani Ipoola Akinrinade, Dr Amos Akingba, Chief Anthony Enahoro and a host of others, ran for their lives and take asylum in other countries.

10. We eventually came out victorious and democracy was put in place but unfortunately we were too angry, tired and in some cases shy to make a bold bid for power. Imagine if elements such as Olisa Agbakoba, the man who made human rights a household issue in Nigeria, had returned to the East to take over power; Owei Lakemfa and Abdul Oroh had gone with other of our Comrades to South South and Femi Falana and several activists of that period from South West had held sway in politics. Imagine if it were the elements like Salihu Lukman , Tony Akika who were the deciders in the North. The story would have been different today. We all were looking for a purity of circumstance and as a result of this dropped the baton and let evil elements in our generation take over the mantle of leadership. It is that realization that the nation is endangered in the hands of those clueless inheritors that brought a General Muhammadu Buhari out of his retirement . You all could see the hell he went through before he could wrestle power from them. Even now they are still vicious and not relenting in their opposition to him.

11.Now, it is the turn of the new generation to fight! You are fighting hard on the social media. Yes, we can see that. Many of you are full of anger that you have almost been consumed by abusing everybody and throwing tantrums . Many of you have even gone as far as denigrating , hating and cursing your country Nigeria. Some have lost hope completely and talking about the ‘second option’ . A number of others are withdrawing to their ethnic cocoon , brewing hate, and weaving lies, sewing seeds of discord, manufacturing fakery, reaching out to the depth of the sewage to look for heroes.

12.This cannot be right. Anger solves no problem. It will only lead to despondency and frustration. It is time to take a new approach. A positive one that will be beneficial to all.

13.It is time for today’s youth to take the right tools, with the right understanding and strategy to chart a course for their generation. We believe the struggle, after Independence, after Democracy, is a struggle for Development! The responsibility is on the young generation, the incoming leaders, to hand over a developed nation, in the league of first world countries, to their children.

14.You can only do that by getting involved, and participating meaningful. You have the energy, you have the intelligence. The internet, thank God, has exposed you to myriads of information and developmental options. What is left, is for you , to have the right compass to enable you take over the politics and governance of our country.

Time is not on your side.

15.The bad as well as the crooked elements among your generation are hankering for power and they have amassed wealth from all manners of dubious means . God forbid , if you don’t make haste and make the right moves today they will , using their ill gotten wealth, shut you out of governance and that will be very dangerous for you and for the future of our country.

16.Not long ago the Arab Spring swept through the Middle East. It was driven by a crop of educated youths with a deep understanding of their terrain and a sound vision of liberal politicking with developmental principles, derived from social networking. They used innovative means to standardise their public service. It is time for you ,the Nigerian youths, to deploy your enlightened minds, your ingenuity, your creativity and exposure to rebuild our nation.

17.Some will say but your generation and the generation before you are holding tightly to power, how exactly do young ones take over? How would the angry youth get in the political ring with old, experienced, resourced and powerful politicians and win?

18.This is the gap myself and Alex Adekunle James, a member of your generation , have collaborated to fill through the book we are presenting and the mentorship program we are launching today.

19.The Politics That Works book, first of its kind in Nigeria, is a step-by-step guide that answers the many questions limiting youth dominance of our political space.
This book makes an attempt at providing a strategic way for young people to play around the current obstacles and attain political office without compromising their values.

20.We seek, through this book, to bring the new generation of politicians out of their confusion and hand them the take-over baton. We will help the youths understand what politics that works entails. We have in the book unveiled the superior grassroots strategies you can employ to beat the odds whilst holding tightly to your values.

21.This initiative does not stop with the book, we have also put together a continuity and sustainability plan for the Politics That Works community called MOP Nigeria - where interested youths can sign up onto the mentorship program to learn real politics, be mentored by the grandmasters and get support to participate, run and get into office. We have set a target to put 500 young Nigerians in positions of power by 2031.

22.Thank God today we have with us as Special Guest of honor, the Vice President of Nigeria, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, a youth friendly leader, a man who is schooled in the past , active in the present and willing to be a bridge to the future. His speeches and actions has indicated that he is willing to hold your hand and lead you to be masters of your destiny.
You have also watched our leader, President Mohammadu Buhari and his partners in progress, built the foundation and put in place the German floor of that edifice of the future. The one who will come after him will lay the blocks and put a solid roof . The finishing will be that of your generation to do. It is our hope that you will come up with a beautiful , enduring and long lasting edifice. What you therefore need to realize is that no builder build well without undergoing a period of apprenticeship and preparation. It is time for you to sign on and learn.

Once again I welcome you to this historic event - The Politics of the Future conference; a long overdue conversation between three categories of political stakeholders; The old and established politicians, the fresh and young politicians and the aspiring politicians, to chart a course for the future of Nigeria politics.
It promises to be the most insightful conversation on politics you have been a part of.
Thank you and have a great time.

NATIONAL SECURITY, ECONOMIC SUCCESS, GREATNESS MORE LIKELY WHERE THERE IS UNITY & TOLERANCE -OSINBAJO

Some of the greatest nations in the world are multi-racial, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious, and a united people working together are more likely to be economically successful, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

Prof. Osinbajo stated this on Wednesday during a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa by a delegation from the Arewa Concerned People for National Unity and Religious Tolerance from Kano, led by Alhaji Auwal Maidabino and Prince Usman Ado-Bayero.

According to the Vice President, “there is no great nation anywhere that has not had this sort of challenge, especially where you have a multi-racial, multi-religious setup. And the greatest nations in the world are multi-racial, multi-religious, and multi-ethnic.

“As a matter of fact, some of these things are as important as the economy and security…. for the reason that a united people, people who see themselves as one, are more likely to be economically successful, more likely to be able to secure themselves and secure their borders, and more likely to work together for the goodness and greatness of their people.”

Continuing, the VP told the delegation that “it is the duty of the leadership, not just political leadership, but also the leadership of social groups and organizations such as yours, to ensure that we are focused on these issues of unity and tolerance.”

Prof. Osinbajo explained further that “as you know, religious tolerance and unity, is for me, a matter that goes beyond mere advocacy. I believe very strongly that the greatness of nations, wherever those nations may be, have always been on account of leaders who thought it fit to build those nations on the basis of unity and tolerance.

“I think that it is such an important issue that we cannot afford to discount it. There is a need for us to pay more time and attention to these issues in whatever way we can because every once in a while, we see some threats to the unity of our country, and we must not allow it to happen at all, we must continue not just in the advocacy, but in action that will bring about unity and religious tolerance,” Prof. Osinbajo added.

Earlier in his remarks, the leader of the delegation, Alhaji Maidabino commended Prof. Osinbajo for his innovative approach to governance and the several initiatives of the Buhari administration anchored through his office and prayed God to provide the opportunity to enable him continue to serve the nation.

Alhaji Maidabino noted that through schemes such as TraderMoni, National Homegrown School Feeding Programme, N-Power, and the Ease of Doing Business initiative, among others, the Vice President has impacted many Nigerians across different sectors.

His words: “we wish to commend and congratulate you for your contributions in the area of promotion of good governance, transparency, and efficiency as exemplified with the core principles behind the Ease of Doing Business initiative of this government, and for the continuation of your uncompromising dedication to peace, unity, and economic progress, among others.”

He informed the Vice President of plans by the group to convene a national forum on unity as part of its contributions to entrenching peaceful coexistence and unity among Nigerians.

2023: New Poll Indicates VP Osinbajo Is the Best Candidate to Succeed President Buhari

FCT, Abuja - As conversations around who emerges Nigeria’s next president in 2023 gradually takes centre stage, pundits in the ThisDay group have positioned Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, ahead of other eminent Nigerians listed in a poll published by the ThisDay newspaper on Monday, July 9.

The poll followed an interview of former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida conducted by Arise TV on who should be Nigeria’s president in 2023.

Osinbajo, a worthy presidential material

Aside from educational qualification, Babangida cited age and experience as important determinants for selecting Buhari’s successor in 2023, stating categorically that an energetic individual in his 60s should be considered by Nigerians for the job. The poll published by ThisDay on Monday listed eminent Nigerians, leading with Osinbajo as qualified persons to occupy the top position. Others listed include President of African Development Bank, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina; United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Mrs. Amina Mohammed; former Central Bank of Nigeria deputy governor, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, and Ekiti state governor, Mr. Kayode Fayemi, among others. Building their analysis on the criteria established by the former military leader, former chairman of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, Dr. Sam Amadi, said Osinbajo is eminently qualified above the other 30 personalities listed in the ThisDay report.

His words: “In normal situations, there should be a line of succession. Professor Osinbajo has the quality, and maybe what he needs to build more is courage because Nigeria needs somebody who can speak up and intervene more often in crises facing the people. “He is a good candidate and ought to be the number one contender for that position.” Dr. Amadi acknowledged the fact that Prof. Osinbajo possesses some of the criteria outlined by IBB in the interview. He said other candidates will face stiff challenges. Arise News analyst, Mr. Mahmud Jega agreed that the current vice president has all the credentials to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023. He added: “Osinbajo is extremely capable technocratically to lead this country in 2023. He has all the qualities and is naturally in the lead ahead of the others.” Meanwhile, northern elder and retired permanent secretary, Alhaji Abbas Sambo, has urged the federal and state governments to work towards restructuring the country.

Daily Sun newspaper reports that the elder statesman said Nigeria ought to go through the process before the 2023 elections. He specifically wants President Muhammadu Buhari, Senate President, Ahmed Lawal, House of Representatives Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, all governors and former presidents of the country to do everything within the ambits of the law to restructure the country as soon as possible as the current presidential system has failed as evident in worsening insecurity. Groups canvasses support for vice president Legit.ng had earlier reported that the Progressive Consolidation Group (PCG) recently urged Osinbajo to consider joining the 2023 presidential race. While calling for Osinbajo to declare interest in the 2023 race, the All Progressives Congress (APC) support group, appealed to the former governor of Lagos state, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to withdraw his presidential bid. PCG’s national coordinator, Hon. Ahmed Mohammed and national secretary, Dr. Eberechukwu Eli Dibia made the comment while addressing reporters in Abuja.

Similarly, a group identified as the Osinbajo Grassroots Organisation has described the vice president as the pathway to Nigeria’s future from 2023. The national convener of the organisation, Foluso Ojo, in a statement in Abuja, disclosed that the group has set aside August 8 to celebrate Osinbajo. He said the leadership qualities of the vice-president show that he can succeed Buhari in 2023 and consolidate on what it described as the good initiatives of the current administration.

SUPPORT FOR MSMEs WILL CONTINUE, OSINBAJO ASSURES AFTER INAUGURAL LECTURE AT BABCOCK UNIVERSITY

Prof Oduyoye, the inaugural lecturer, to small business owners: integrity, customer satisfaction key to success

A pivotal element of the Buhari administration's economic direction is providing support to Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in order to raise hope, create jobs and opportunities that will produce growth and development in the country.

This was the summation of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, yesterday at Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, where he was Special Guest of Honour at the University’s 33rd Inaugural Lecture, titled “From the Small Business to Big Business: A Future with Little Hope,”’ delivered by Prof. Oluseyi Oduyoye.

Earlier in the lecture, Prof. Oduyoye, who attended Igbobi College, Yaba, Lagos, at the same time with the Vice President, said while there was much to be done in the MSMEs space to achieve the desired objectives, issues around integrity in the conduct of small businesses has to be addressed as well. He submitted that lack of integrity is among factors militating against the growth of small businesses in the country.

He urged “aspiring small business owners who have the ambition of becoming big players in the future to note that the qualities of integrity and customer satisfaction are key to the success of any business.”

Prof. Oduyoye, a professor of Business Administration, further stated that as significant as MSMEs are to the economy of nations, it is noteworthy that the financing gap for the sector in many developing countries is a militating factor for growth. Hence the need for government, particularly the Federal Government, to give more financial assistance to small businesses.

Prof. Osinbajo who spoke briefly at the end of the inaugural lecture noted that Federal and State Governments "must keep working on small businesses because that is the future of our country. There is no question that the economic future of our country will depend on small businesses."

He then explained that this was why the MSME Clinics were designed by the Federal Government to bring regulatory agencies, whose work affects the business experience of MSMEs, in direct interface with small business owners in the same spot.

"What we do is to visit the States with the regulatory agencies, we would also go with FIRS, NAFDAC, SON, CAC, and co. These regulatory agencies would meet with the MSMEs and discuss their various problems. The obvious reason is that MSMEs are indisputably the engine of growth in any economy.”

Speaking specifically on recent government interventions, Prof. Osinbajo said “one of the things we did with MSMEs during the COVID-19 pandemic and right afterward is what we call the MSMEs Survival Fund.”

“The MSMEs Survival Fund gave almost a million businesses support after the pandemic. We paid three months' salary of several of the MSMEs, especially private schools - private primary schools, private secondary schools. We paid for teachers and also for several other businesses.”

According to the VP, “as I keep saying, Nigeria is a large country, in order to deal with all those issues and in order to support more businesses in a way that they ought to be supported, a lot more money is needed.”

He added that the African Development Bank (AfDB) has agreed to support the government with $500million for MSMEs in technology in particular, noting that “this is something that will be very helpful in addition to the N75 billion (Youth Fund) which the government has set aside for young people in small businesses.”

Prof. Osinbajo commended the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, owners of the University, for the investment they have made in education, noting that “this is very commendable indeed and this is the direction that several religious organizations must follow.”

“The real work of ministry is a work of ministering to the people, especially those who cannot afford to do many of those things themselves. The work that the ministries did was the reason the likes of Professor Oduyoye and I are here.

“So, I believe that it is very important that religious organizations see this as primary in all of the tasks and things they choose to do,” the VP added.

Other dignitaries present at the event include Ogun State Deputy Governor, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele; Former Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Boss, Dr. Babatunde Fowler; board member of Nigeria-Canada Trade and Investment Group, Chief Taiwo Odutola; the Vice Chancellor of Babcock University, Prof. Ademola Tayo; the Akarigbo of Remo, Oba Babatunde Adewale Ajayi; the Olofin of Ilishan, Oba Arimasakin Olufemi Shonuga, among others.

Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have started arriving in Abuja for a meeting on the state of the party.

The meeting, which barring last-minute changes is due to hold on Thursday (today), is aimed at finding a political solution to the challenge posed by the Supreme Court judgment on the Ondo State governorship election.

Some senior party members have argued that a part of the judgment calls to question the continued stay in office of Buni, a serving governor, as Chairman of the Caretaker/ National Convention Planning Committee of the party.

It was gathered that the governors would be discussing how best to give their colleagues “a soft-landing” in a way that would preserve the party’s reputation as well as ensure that the governors would not leave with a feeling that they were used and dumped.

Although neither governors nor members of the Federal Executive Council who are senior lawyers have reached a consensus on the issue, multiple party sources who spoke to our correspondent in confidence tilted towards “saving the party first.”

A high ranking party source told The PUNCH, “There are as many views as there are lawyers in the cabinet and in the party. Just like the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo (SAN) argues that the party should halt further activities and effect changes in leadership, people like the Attorney General of the Federation and our party’s lead counsel in the Ondo case, Niyi Akintola (SAN), maintain the view that the party leadership has no reason to nurse any fear because no law has been breached.”

As of Wednesday, the governors who had arrived Abuja for the meeting included Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Abubakar Badaru (Jigawa), Sani Bello (Niger), Ondo, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe) and Abubakar Bagudu (Kebbi).

Attempts to get an official response to enquiries about the meeting from the Director General of the Progressives Governors Forum, Dr. Salihu Lukman were futile. Calls to his mobile telephone number were neither picked nor returned as at 9:14 pm

Recall that The PUNCH had on Wednesday reported that after a meeting attended by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the APC state governors and other stakeholders on Friday night, the party leaders started considering the removal of Buni as caretaker committee chairman and other governors, who are members of the panel.

Apart from Buni, who is the Governor of Yobe State, other governors, who are members of the committee, are Sani Bello of Niger State, who is representing the North-Central and his Osun State counterpart, Isiaka Oyetola, who represents the South-West.

```How the Thief's Partner Acquired a Curse```
A man who takes part with a thief has hate for his soul; he is put under oath, but says nothing. BBE
Whoever is an accomplice of a thief is an enemy of his own soul. He takes an oath, but dares not testify. NHEB
(Proverbs 29:24)
A thief is a person who claims something that's not his. A thief wrongly takes something that is not theirs. When you take something that was given to you, that's taking it rightly.
An accomplice is anybody that knows about, helps and assists someone to accomplish an offence. So an accomplice to a thief is the person who helps the thief in any way to carry out his act of stealing. Think about the thief in this instance as the devil or demons. The thief's accomplice is the person who assists the enemy, the thief – the one who steals, kills and destroys (John 10:10).
The Bible says that if you're the accomplice of a thief, you are your own enemy. This is because, if you've committed yourself to support anything that the devil wants, you're his accomplice and you are bringing judgement and punishment on yourself. In a sense, you have made an oath.
Demons would say to Jesus, _"Have you come to torment us before the time?"_(Matthew 8:29). There is the time when demons will be tormented and if you're one of the assistants to those demons, you will be tormented. So, never ever be in agreement with the devil.
The fear of man will prove to be a snare but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe (Proverbs 29:25). If you tried to cover up something because you were afraid of what people would think, say, or how you would be punished, you will get in trouble with God.
Do you know what the fear of God is? It is when you're afraid of what God thinks more than what people think. When you are more afraid of what people think [than what God thinks], it's called the fear of man. If you have the fear of man, you'll lack the fear of God. *The extent to which you care more about what people think is the extent to which you lack the fear of God*. But if you're always considering what God thinks, that's the fear of God.
The accomplice of a thief can help himself: *simply by choosing not to fear man more than God.*
*You can help people, but never at the expense of what God thinks*. The Scripture says that you'll be under a curse. Zechariah 5:3-4 says that a curse is in the house of the thief and the liar. There is a curse for the thief and the liar. *The accomplice is the liar.* He didn't commit the offence, but he lies. The accomplice is asked, _"Who knows? Do you?"_ and he doesn't answer.
Many people do things like that in this world — from family, with siblings. So you know your brother or sister did something and you lied and covered it up. This is how many people who go to church and have Christian parents, are under curses all over the world.
A curse stays in your life. It is like sickness, like a disease that gives you a problem here, a problem there. In your body, in your soul, in your spirit, there are different problems all over, and many times, no one even realises it.
_"I don't know what is happening here. Let's pray, let's fast..."_
Physically, people have problems. They have things coming out of their bodies, eyes, ears, etc., their skins go bad; their money is affected, all sorts of things are happening. That's how curses work. If you want to understand how a curse works just look at *Deuteronomy 28.*
People think a curse is when someone says, _"It will not be well with you."_ No.
A curse is anything that takes away God's blessing.
That is to say, that in a certain area, God would have blessed you but you're not blessed. Instead, something is taken away from you.
The curse is in the house... Your body is a house (1 Corinthians 6:19). Curses will destroy the timber and the stones. Picture a life where things are tampered with because of covering up wrong doings. Just imagine how many people this passage is referring to. And this is so normal. If you go to an office, everyone is telling lies. It's lies upon lies. Meanwhile, everyone is attending church, praying and pursuing God.
So you see a man who is an accountant in his office and he lies, cheats, covers up theft (or he steals himself). The devil sees all of those things, and worse still, God sees all of it.
Don't steal or tell lies. Don't join the devil who is stealing and lying to cover up what he is doing. The devil is the thief, don't be his accomplice. When you are asked, "What happened here? What is the truth about this sin that was committed here?"_tell the truth. Always tell the truth, or you're an accomplice of the thief, the devil.
Remember, the more blessed you are, the fewer the curses you're under. Remember also, that God said _"Put them on the mountains, these will stand here and they will say these are the curses... And these will stand here and say these are the blessings..."_l (Deuteronomy 11:26, 29; 27:10-26).
People will say that under Jesus there is no curse. This is true; under Jesus there should be no curse, just like under Jesus there should be no sickness. Jesus took away your sickness. But do Christians get sick? Do you ever get sick? Yes. So do you ever get cursed? The answer is "Yes".
As it is with sickness, so it is with curses. In Jesus, in obedience, if you abide in Him and His words abide in you, ask what you will, it shall be done (John 15:7). All your curses will be removed but you must first abide in Him. You must be obedient to Him.
