A commanding officer stationed northeast Nigeria gives a detailed account in a letter to President Goodluck Jonathan, on several troubling issues plaguing troops combating the Islamist terror group Boko Haram in the region.

The officer stated that, corruption, maladministration, lack of resources and troops motivation has militated against a successful campaign to end Boko Haram’s deadly reign of terror in the northeast.

The officer’s lengthy complaint which he claims would lead to a threat to his life forewarns that if his pleas continue to be ignored by the country’s leadership that both the Nigerian Army and the country will crumble under the insurgency.

“If all issues raised in this letter are not urgently addressed, the Nigerian Army will soon be history and by implication there will be no country called Nigeria,” the officer gravely states. “No country without a strong army will survive.”

Below is the full text of the officer’s letter addressed to President Goodluck Jonathan

PLEASE MR PRESIDENT SAVE THE MILITARY AND NIGERIA FROM COLLAPSING

1. Sir, I am constrain to write you this letter which I consider it a matter of more than great importance for me to inform you and put to record issues that are happening in the North East (Operation Zaman Lafiya). I choose this medium to write you this open letter because I have written similar letter but no action was taking which I believe some forces have blocked it are now after my life. Sir I have served in 7 Division as staff officer and presently I am the commanding officer of 103Bn in the field. My combined wealth of experience as a staff officer and now commanding officer are the disturbing fact that necessitated me to write you this letter. While as a staff officer, I was among those who believed that the commanders in the field are not doing well. But presently, as a commander in the field, I found out that it is not the fault of any commander that the defeat of the so called BOKO HARAM (BH) has not been achieved.

2. First and foremost sir, the Nigerian Army is poorly equipped in the North East, if all the battalions are well-equipped as required; it will not take the Army more than two weeks to flush out the BH. Presently there are four units in my location here in KONDUGA including 21 Armoured Brigade HQ. If all the units are provided with all their requirements, we can advance and flush out BH out of North East. Mr. President sir, the Nigerian Army is well-trained and capable of defending our nation. It has demonstrated the capacity to even successfully enforce peace in other nations. Why not in our own country Nigeria?

3. The fact about NE operation is that we are poorly equipped, understaffed, high corruption from Army Headquarters down to battalion level. Commanders see it as opportunity to make money. My predecessor has complained of the same problem. Instead of ASA addressing the issue raised by him, the army authorities decided to Court Martialled him. All the units in NE are understaffed, but on payroll their strength are complete just to collect more allowances than what each unit is supposed to. The commanders see it as a personal money making venture rather than taking care of men and equipment. This ugly trend led to loss of many officers and soldiers and thereby having adverse effect on the moral (sic) of troops. Majority of soldiers in the operation area wear mufti (civil cloths) under their military uniforms in case there is an attack and the troops cannot withstand the BH, they found it easy to disguise as civilians to enable them escape. This is not the traditional practice in the NA. Though it is lack of adequate equipment and poor administration from the higher authority that resulted to this ugly trend by our troops

4. Sir, another bad and unprofessional act is that soldiers don’t take to orders from their superior officers because they have lost confidence/trust from them. The case of former General Officer Commanding 7 Division Major General A. Mohammed is enough evidence to show that all is not well in the Nigerian Army. It will interest you to note that worse cases has been recorded before that of the former GOC and more are still happening, but nobody is ready to investigate the root cause of problems facing the troops in the field.

5. This brings me to a recent occurrence which is my main purpose of writing this letter. As I mentioned earlier, due to the failure of the authority to address issues that I made mentioned, when a unit is attacked and overran by the BH not because the soldiers are unable to fight, but lack of weapons, ammunitions and communications equipment, the soldiers on many occasions will ran away, and a commander cannot stand and fight alone as a result of this. Presently seventy percent of commanders in the NE are facing Court Martial due to the reasons mentioned. We the commanding officers are very worried over this development. This is because we many soon find our self as victims of this maladministration from our higher authorities.

6. There is no sincerity in this operation; this is because the present acting GOC has never visited any location outside Maiduguri town not to talk of principal staff officers in Army Headquarters or even the COAS. But we keep on hearing all sorts of lies that Generals are leading the fight against BH. These are facts that can be confirmed from officers and soldiers in this operation including those in the 7 Division Headquarters. The GOC is so afraid that even with the Divisional Headquarters; he doesn’t go out and always locked himself inside his office. Infact it is a common knowledge among officers and soldiers in this operation that the acting GOC is here to make his money and earn his promotion to the detriment of the operation. The completion of his mansion at No 8 Gwamna Road in Kaduna which the GOC ignorantly disclosed that when he completed it, will be among the best houses in Kaduna, has turned to be a subject of discussion among troops.

7. The former 21 Armored Brigade commander is facing Court Martial today because the acting GOC does not want to see him and his garrision in Maiduguri town simply because of the huge monthly allocations from the Borno State government to the brigade garrision. He wanted to be collecting his money by using 7 Div Garrison, but in reality 7 Div Garrision does not have troops to claim such money. It is worthy to note that the GOC received 33,000litres of AGO and PMS each, 600 bags of rice monthly from Borno State government. All these items are diverted for his personal use.

8. Recently the newly appointed 21 Brigade commander lead 3 units to flush out the BH, that operation was successful, almost 300 BH were killed, weapons and vehicles were recovered from them, in the process the troops exhausted their ammunitions from the Div, the GOC simply replied that there was no ammunition this made all the troops to withdraw back to KONDUGA.

9. Presently more than 3000 officers and soldiers are either killed in action, deserted, captured as POW or on AWOL. But due to lack of proper administration the army directed that their salary should be stopped. This affect the families of those that are either genuinely killed in action or captured as Prisoners of War. It has also affected some of the troops that are still participating in this operation.

10. Mr. President sir, if all issues raised in this letter are not urgently address, the Nigerian Army will soon be history and by implication there will be no country called Nigeria. No country without strong army will survive. I decided to write you this letter because the life of officers and soldiers trusted in my care are no longer save. My life is also at the stake because the NA authority as usual will say I have communicated directly to you as the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and may sanction me. As a citizen of this country and a commander in the operational area, with all the points I have mentioned in this letter, it is clearly that the Military authorities have failed the country, as such they should be held liable for their misdeeds. I have consulted seasonal constitutional lawyers if writing you this letter will be an offence, but they said it is my constitutional right to inform the C in C about what is happening in the NE and within the military which if not address will affect the survival of Nigeria.

Open Letter to Senator Bola Tinubu On 2015 Presidential Election [Part 1] By Deborah Nelson

1. Chief Obafemi Awolowo was imprisoned on trumped-up charges by Hausa Fulani controlled Federal Government of Nigeria [FGN] because they could not manipulate him. However, following the rebellion by Eastern Region against FGN and likely secession of Western Region from Nigeria, Chief Awolowo was released from prison and appointed Federal Commissioner of Finance and Vice Chairman of Federal Executive Council [FEC]. Because of Chief Awolowo’s sincere and selfless contributions to the fatherland, Western Region did not secede and the Civil War was brought to an end earlier than it would have been without him. But when General Mohammed overthrew General Gowon in 1975, he dropped Chief Awolowo as Federal Commissioner of Finance and abolished the office of Vice Chairman of FEC. The question is, if the military could work with a civilian Vice Chairman of FEC during the civil war, what genuine excuse did late General Mohammed have to abolish it after the civil war? Next to this was the barefaced rigging of 1979 presidential elections by FGN in favour of a Fulani Grade 2 teacher, Alhaji Shehu Shagari. In summary, Hausa Fulani politicians jailed Chief Awolowo on trumped-up charges because they could not manipulate him, they later released him from jail so that he could assist them to keep Nigeria united for them to plunder her resources and finally dumped him unceremoniously the moment they achieved their aim.

2. During Alhaji Shehu Shagari’s administration, Chief MKO Abiola used his Concord Newspapers to relentlessly denigrate Chief Awolowo while singing praises of President Shagari’s government to high heavens. However, when Chief Abiola wanted to contest for presidential ticket against Alhaji Shagari on NPN platform, he was derisively advised to forget it because, according to Alhaji Umaru Dikko, ‘presidency is not for sale’. During Babangida’s transition program, he won the presidential elections on the platform of SDP, but was disallowed from exercising the mandate because he was not a core north Muslim. His attempts to claim the mandate led to his unlawful imprisonment and mysterious death in prison. As if these were not enough, his wife, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola was also assassinated.

3. General Olusegun Obasanjo reluctantly assumed power as a military Head of State following assassination of General Mohammed. He knew that if he should openly express interest to replace late General Mohammed, core north military officers would definitely waste him. During this period, real executive powers were exercised by Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, late General Shehu Yar’ Adua. As a nominal Head of State, General Obasanjo presided over state sponsored manipulations of the presidential elections and Judiciary in favour of Alhaji Shehu Shagari in 1979. Following the death of Chief MKO Abiola in prison and the need to pacify your people, core north reached out for Chief Obasanjo, believing that they would be able to manipulate him as before. They first wanted to assassinate him to pave way for his Vice, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku to takeover power. However, they decided to test likely response of your people by spreading rumors of his assassination. Core north was shocked to note that your people were solidly behind Chief Obasanjo, though they did not vote for him. Their plan to impeach him was also vehemently resisted by your people. In their misguided determination to disgrace Chief Obasanjo out of office, core north introduced Sharia Laws in their states and this led to massive destruction of lives and properties of Christians in the north. Consequently, Muslims and Christians do not trust each other and there is no major town in the north today that both Muslims and Christians live together in peace.

4. A contingent of the army of old Oyo Empire under the command of Aare-Ona Kakanfo Afonja was dispatched to Ilorin to protect Igbomina Yoruba people against Nupe slave raiders by Alafin Aole. Afonja later rebelled against the Alafin and declared Ilorin independent of old Oyo empire. In order to sustain his independence, he invited a Fulani charm maker, Sheik Shehu Alimi to relocate to Ilorin from Kuwa so that he could benefit from the Sheik’s spiritual powers. He recruited slaves from everywhere, including old Oyo Empire into his army and granted them enormous powers because he believed the slaves would be more loyal to him than his soldiers. However, Aare-Ona Kakanfo Afonja was later murdered by the slaves when he tried to bring them under his control. When Sheik Alimi died, he was succeeded by his son, Abdul Salami. With the support of the slaves that killed Aare Ona Kakanfo Afonja, Abdul Salami eliminated all perceived obstacles to his ambition to transform Ilorin into an Emirate. In 1823, he declared Ilorin an Emirate, installed himself as the Emir and pledged allegiance to Sokoto Caliphate. Today, none of your people can become Emir of Ilorin, and their traditional rulers are under the Emir, a descendant of itinerant Fulani charm maker because of Afonja’s treachery and inordinate ambition.

5. The real APC’s presidential candidate for 2015 presidential election will be either Buhari, Kwankwarso or Abubakar Atiku, all Hausa Fulani Muslims. Amongst these three crown princes of APC, you prefer General Buhari [rtd] with yourself as the VP. Sir, have you made any genuine effort to know the ‘man’ General Buhari [rtd]? As Head of State, General Buhari [rtd] promulgated Decree 4 to cage press freedom because he felt the press wrongly accused him of stealing billions of US Dollars as a Petroleum Minister. He also promulgated a retroactive Decree which he used to execute Mr Bathlomew Owo and two others by firing squad for an offence they committed even before he became Head of State. In his interview in 2013 with Desert Herald, a Kaduna based Weekly, he promised never to either forget or forgive Chief Obasanjo for undisclosed reasons. In his penchant to burn fingers that feed him, he planned to court marshal General Babangida on trumped-up charges even though it was General Babangida who installed him the Head of State after risking his life to topple the Shagari’s government. After the military coup, ex President Shehu Shagari, a Fulani Muslim like him, was placed under a house arrest in a well furnished Guest House with unfettered access to good things of life while the ex Vice Presdident, Dr Alex Ekweme, a Christian of Igbo extraction was dumped in Kiri Kiri maximum security prison with common criminals. Sir, it may interest you to note that the Buharis regard the rest Nigerians as ‘infidels’, all Yoruba Muslims inclusive. As the Chairman of PTF, over 70% of all major projects successfully executed by PTF were located in North West Geopolitical Zone. He ordered National Security Organisation [NSO] to kidnap Alhaji Umaru Dikko in London and bring him dead or alive to Lagos. Is it proper for anyone to borrow N27.5 million from a Bank without collateral and invest the whole money in politics as he did?

6. Sir, you are the undisputed kingmaker in APC and all core north politicians look up to you for direction and favour. You used this leverage to force Kwankwarso to install the disgraced Governor of Central Bank , Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano. Driven by hatred for the Obasanjos and desire to emerge as the leader of your people, you masterminded the installation of Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal as Speaker of Federal House of Representatives, thereby denying your people the post zoned to them by PDP. You joined forces with Hausa Fulani Muslims, the most conservative ethnic group in Nigeria to form a political party, APC, whose only objective is to wrest power from President Jonathan at any cost.

7. Sir, as you enjoy the ride on tiger’s back and crying more than the bereaved, please always note that one day the tiger will do the ‘needful’. I have made some efforts above to draw your attention to what Hausa Fulani people did to your people on more than three instances. You may wish to find time out of your very busy schedules to ponder over these questions. Why did core north military officers install Lieutenant Colonel Yakubu Gowon as the Head of State instead of the most senior military officer then from the south in line with military tradition? What led to Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s imprisonment? What led to Chief MKO Abiola’s imprisonment and subsequent death in prison? What were the reasons behind the creation of Mid-Western Region and Ekiti State from Western Region and Ondo State respectively? What led to the transformation of Ilorin to an Emirate. Why is it that all Yoruba traditional rulers in Kwara state are under the Emir of Ilorin, a descendant of itinerant Fulani charm maker? Why was Oyo Empire moved southwards to its present location? What was the cardinal reason that propelled General Babangida to overthrow Major General Buhari? Sir, no successful leader ignores lessons learnt from history.

8. In Julius Caesar written by Williams Shakespeare, Julius Caesar ignores warnings from a soothsayer and Artemidorus because of arrogance. He thinks nothing can hurt him because he, ‘Caesar’, is more dangerous than danger. This ‘greater than thou’ attitude of Julius Caesar leads to his assassination by Brutus and his fellow conspirators. Sir, here is a portion from Artemidorus’s letter to Julius Caesar for your necessary actions ‘THERE IS BUT ONE MIND IN ALL THESE MEN……..IF THOU BEEST NOT IMMORTAL, LOOK ABOUT YOU, SECURITY GIVES WAY TO CONSPIRACY’. Apart from these Hausa Fulani politicians, there are many credible northerners APC can field as its presidential candidate in 2015 and Sam Nda-Isaiah is one of them. I doubt if you will give this a serious thought because Sam Nda-Isaiah is a Christian. Please learn from what Hausa Fulani Muslims did to Aare Ona Kakanfo Afonja, Chief Awolowo and Chief MKO Abiola just to mention a few and adjust accordingly. Sir, if you decide to ignore this advice, please be prepared to go into self exile again if General Buhari [rtd] becomes president of Nigeria because he will definitely use you to demonstrate his resolve to fight corruption. Security gives way to conspiracy, Senator Tinubu, be wise and watch your back.

Dr Deborah Nelson, Sobi, Ilorin, Kwara State

As much as Nigerian leaders call for and promote unity of our country, Southern and Northern elders still would often exchange bitter words. Earlier, Naij.com has posted an opinion by our contributor Hussain Obaro who warned Southers leaders against presenting the North in the wrong light and antagonizing Nigerians. Today, Dr. Deborah Nelson, writing from Ilorin, Kwara State, appeals to the Northern elders and voices her own concerns.

“1. Northern elders! During the Yar’Adua administration, militants’ activities in the Niger Delta led to substantial drop in crude oil production. To restore normalcy to the region, Niger Delta elders, led by the then-Vice President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, went into the creeks and persuaded the militants to embrace peace. Similarly, when activities of the OPC were becoming a threat to national security, Yoruba elders met with the OPC members and persuaded them to embrace peace.
“But in the North, instead of adopting similar measures to restore peace to the region, you are busy looking for whom to blame. According to you, Northern elders, Boko Haram terrorists are not Northerners but Southerners, financed to destroy the North. Unfortunately, while you are busy playing the ostrich, a sizable part of this nation is being destroyed by Boko Haram terrorists and Fulani herdsmen.

“2. Northern elders! In 2010, Alhaji Kaita promised to make Nigeria ungovernable for Jonathan if he was elected Nigerian president in 2011. In 2010 also, Atiku Abubakar promised to bring about violent change if he did not become Nigerian president in 2011. As promised by Kaita and Atiku, Boko Haram metamorphosed into a deadly terrorist sect overnight as soon as president Jonathan was sworn in as president in 2011. Just recently, Dr. Junaid Mohammed threatened that “if this President rigs himself back into office in 1015, it may very well mark the end of this country”. One hopes Dr. Junaid Mohammed, his wives and children will personally participate in his self-imposed mission to destroy Nigeria.

“3. Northern elders! You called for investigation and prosecution of General Ihejirika, rtd., and Senator Sheriff based primarily on accusation by Mr. Davies. The same Mr. Davies accused you of using Boko Haram to destabilize Jonathan’s government. He also accused a high-ranking official in the CBN, who recently left his post, of financing Boko Haram. But you feigned ignorance of these aspects of Mr. Davies’ allegations. Of recent, Mr. Obermayr, a member of European Parliament, accused General Buhari, rtd., of financing Boko Haram, and Alhaji Atiku of being financed by al Qaida to destabilize Southern Nigeria. He also accused the APC of channeling European Parliament financial aids to support insurgency in Eastern Nigeria. As expected, you and Chief John Oyegun, APC Chairman, are exhibiting incurable symptoms of selective amnesia as regards those accusations.

“4. Northern elders! You often celebrate Boko Haram attacks on security forces as a manifestation of Jonathan’s incompetence. But any counter-attack by security forces against Boko Haram attracts prompt criticism from you. According to you, Boko Haram terrorists are fighting for their rights the same way the Niger Delta militants did, hence, the government should stop attacking them and grant them amnesty. By your actions, utterances and body language, you created enabling environment for Boko Haram to grow into the present monster that is currently decimating the region. You condemn Boko Haram only when they attack mosques or Muslims. When Emir of Kwarso was killed by the sect, Sultan Abubakar only admonished Boko Haram to ‘stop killing Muslims’.

“5. Northern Nigeria is synonymous with violence. This had been the norm even before President Jonathan assumed power. You want everyone to convert to Islam. during every religious riot, you engineer slaughter of anyone who is not a Hausa-Fulani Muslim, irrespective of his or her religion.
“Mr. Gideon Akaluka was beheaded in Kano in 1996 for just touching Holy Koran. Hundreds of Nigerians were killed in the North when you organized a religious riot against the hosting of Miss World Contest in Nigeria in 2002. In 2005 in the North, hundreds of Nigerians were killed in religious riot because a newspaper in Norway published a caricature of Prophet Mohammed. A Yoruba lady teacher from Ogun State was roasted in Bauchi by her Muslim students who accused her of touching Holy Koran in 2007. Some bloody religious riots are Maitatsine riot in Kano in 1983, 1991 riot in Kano against Evangelist Bonnke, Maiduguri riot in 2006, Sango Kataf riot, Sharia Law riot in Kaduna in 2000.
“In short, there is no year without bloody religious riots in the North, all perpetrated by you. Consequently, there is no town in the North today where Muslims and Christians live together in peace. Added to this is the widespread destruction of lives and properties of Christians by Fulani herdsmen in Kaduna, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Taraba, Plateau, Adamawa states, even down to Anambra, Enugu and Oyo states.

“6. Northern elders! The inspiration for you to always orchestrate bloody religious riots could be attributed to your resolve to implement Sultan Ahmadu Bello’s Doctrine which states, “The new nation called Nigeria should be an estate of our great grandfather Othman Dan Fodio. We must ruthlessly prevent a change of power. We must use the minorities in the north as winning tools and the south as a conquered territory and never allow them to have control over their future.”

“Another source could be the Organization of Islamic Countries’ (OIC) Abuja Declaration of 1989 which enjoins all member countries to ensure only Muslims are elected to all political posts of member nations, eradicate in all its forms and ramifications all non-Muslim religions in member nations (Christianity, Ahmadiya, and other tribal modes of worship unacceptable to Muslims), ensure ultimate replacement of all Western forms of legal and judicial systems with Sharia in all member nations before then next Islam in Africa Organization conference, and ensure the appointment of only Muslims into strategic national and international posts of member nations. The IAO was founded by OIC in 1989 in Abuja to implement Abuja Declarations and incidentally, one of you, Doctor Usman Muhammad Bugaje, is the current Secretary General of IAO.

“7. Nothern elders! Because of stiff opposition by you, the emergency rule imposed in the 3 North-Eastern states is not comprehensive. If you had allowed for imposition of emergency rule with a military administrator in Borno state, Governor Shettima would not have had the opportunity to organize the controversial abduction. On 11 June 2014, Governor Shettima said Boko Haram might attack Southern Nigeria. On 15 June, 3 bombs were detected in Winners Chapel Church in Owerri. Same day, soldiers intercepted 33 buses around 3 a.m. in Abia State with 486 Hausa Fulani Muslims. 86 of them were confirmed members of Boko Haram. But, led by Sultan Abubakar, you, Northern elders, called them “innocent Hausa Fulani businessmen” and demanded for their unconditional release. Even though none of these ‘businessmen’ had up to even N1,000 on them! On 20 June 2014, Boko Haram suicide bomber was arrested while trying to plant bombs in a school in Owerri. Mallam Shehu Sani said that Boko Haram would like to exchange the girls with their members in government custody, and the next day Shekau, Boko Haram leader, announced same to the public. How did Governor Shettima and Mallam Shehu Sani get the information from Boko Haram?

“8. Northern elders! Governor Shettima is old enough to make informed decisions, but he decided to play politics with human lives. If Governor Shettima’s children were in that school, would he have refused to move the students to Maiduguri, as advised by the Federal Ministry of Education? Would he have refused to provide adequate security in the school, as he promised? Why did Shettima replace all Christian staff with Muslims prior to the abduction? Why is it that on the night of the said abduction, the staff and their families did not sleep in the school? Why is it that over 90% of the girls are Christians? Why is it that none of these physics students could speak English? Initially, the Principal, Mrs. Asabe Kwambura. said she was present when the girls were abducted. Why did she change her story that she was at Maiduguri when the abduction took place? The number of the abducted girls was put at 129 initially. Why did the number increase to over 200 after Shettima offered to pay each family one million naira?
“While you mount pressure on the presidency to facilitate safe return of the girls, you should also cause your son, Governor Shettima, to provide answers to above questions. However, you can ignore this suggestion if you, Northern elders, have actually connived with Governor Shettima to facilitate the abduction of Chibok girls for political gains.

“9. Northern elders! Through deliberate adulteration of Almajiri System of Islamic Education(ASIE), you had been able to produce inexhaustible reservoirs of human robots whom you often use to prosecute endless bloody religious riots in Northern Nigeria primarily to protect your selfish interests. While you send your children to acquire Western education, you discourage the less privileged amongst you from doing same by deceiving them that Western education is un-Islamic. While you allow your children to be vaccinated against polio, you discourage the less privileged amongst you from doing same by deceiving them that it is un-Islamic. While you send your daughters to acquire Western education, you encourage less privileged amongst you to marry their daughters off at the age of seven by deceiving them that it is Islamic to do so. What do you gain by hiding under Islam, a religion of peace with over a billion believers? Remember, Allah is watching you, so, do unto the less privileged amongst you what you want others to do unto you and stop seeing them as expendable.

“10. Northern elders! You want power to return to the North next year at any cost. Some of you, Northern elders, had gone further once again to threaten to make the country ungovernable if a Northerner does not assume power next year. It is a fact that most of you are in your sixties and above, hence you think you have nothing to loose if you set the nation ablaze. If that happens, you will surely relocate abroad with your families and from the comfort of your lavishly furnished palaces, watch innocent Muslims and Christians kill themselves. If all elders in Nigeria will resort to violence to press home their demands like you, will there be any country called Nigeria by the time the winner finally emerges. Please talk like a typical African elder who is an embodiment of wisdom, peace and humility and not like a motor park tout.

“11. Northern elders! The vast majority of people of Niger Delta believe, rightly or wrongly, that Hausa-Fulani politicians use Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen to destabilize Jonathan’s government. Consequently, they may destabilize any government headed by a Hausa Fulani president. Niger Delta people are not against the rest Northerners. To avoid a situation whereby Nigeria will be forced to fight three wars (the Boko Haram war, Fulani herdsmen war, and oil and gas war) simultaneously with no money to prosecute the wars, Hausa Fulani politicians should step aside for now. There are many capable and credible northerners (both Christians and Muslims) such as Sam Nda Isah, David Mark, Iyocha Ayough, and many others whom the North can jointly adopt and support to contest for presidency. You will as expected, wave this suggestion aside as an idle talk, hoping that you will cross the bridge when you get there. From available indices, there may be no bridge to cross because emergence of a Hausa-Fulani president next year through whatever means, will usher in unprecedented disruption of gas and crude oil production throughout the duration of the government.

“12. Northern elders! Instead of wasting precious time trying to blame anyone but yourselves, you should meet with Boko Haram members and persuade them to embrace peace, just as Yoruba and Niger Delta elders did. You, Northern elders, may not feel threatened by the avoidable disaster you have brought on the North. This is because your people will believe and do whatever you tell them without a second thought. This also informs your penchant to relish in issuing threats with or without provocation. Having produced easily manipulated, inexhaustible reservoirs of human robots through deliberate adulteration of Almajiri System of Islamic Education, you are emboldened to play the ostrich while the North is on fire.

“May Allah grant you the grace to retrace your steps for the benefits of the unborn generations in your various communities, amen.”

Open Letter to General Buhari [Retd]
On 2015 Presidential Election

1. Majority of politicians who encourage you to re-contest in 2015 do not share in your vision. Most of them, especially Hausa Fulani politicians, want to ride on your popularity to victory politically. Today, even Mallam El Rufai who insulted you and described you as a ‘perpetually unelectable’ politician in 2010 is now singing your praises. So, what has changed between then and now other than El Rufai’s selfish desire to use you to achieve his political ambition? Just take a look at his campaign posters in Kaduna and judge for yourself. This was the same reason that led to massive influx of politicians, mostly Hausa Fulani politicians into CPC in 2011. They know that without you, they are politically dead, hence, they will continue to flatter you, insult your perceived political opponents and pretend to support you in order to ensure your continuous participation in partisan politics for their selfish interests.

2. Most Nigerian politicians are thieves, including members of your party, APC. Currently, all lawmakers in NASS, irrespective of party affiliation, are cooperating amongst themselves to steal public funds. If any of them or any Nigerian politician believes that you will fight corruption if elected into office as Nigerian president, he or she will not vote for you. Do not be deceived because they are into politics primarily to steal public funds and protect their ill gotten wealth as long as they live. In addition, there are thousands of very corrupt and influential Nigerians such as ex-presidents, ex-governors, contractors, etc who had already corruptly enriched themselves. As long as these thieves are alive, they will go to any length to ensure that your path to Aso Rock Villa is strewn with impassable obstacles.

3. You supported introduction of Sharia Laws in the north in 2000 and advised Muslims to vote only for politicians who would protect Islam. When ex-Governor Yerima was criticized for amputating a Muslim’s hand for stealing, you supported it and asked’ what is wrong if, according to Sharia Laws, Muslims cut off another Muslim’s hand for stealing?’ You said that Boko Haram terrorists were fighting for their rights like Niger Delta militants did. You also called on Federal Government to grant them amnesty and stop dropping bombs on ‘innocent northerners’. In recognition of your support, Boko Haram terrorists nominated you to lead their delegation for negotiation with Federal Government. A member of European Parliament, Mr Franz Obermayr accused you of sponsoring Boko Haram terrorists, but up till date you have not reacted to this weighty allegation. Also, you have not even for once condemned the on going widespread destruction of lives and properties of northern minorities by Fulani herdsmen in the north. Because of these amongst others, you are the most popular living politician amongst Hausa Fulani Muslims, especially Islamic fundamentalists who believe that you are the ‘Amir’ who will surely implement Sharia Laws in Nigeria. For the same reasons Sir, non-Hausa Fulani/Kanuri Nigerians fear and detest you with a passion, especially northern minorities who are being butchered daily by Fulani herdsmen and Boko Haram terrorists.

4. You won a total of 12,214,853 votes during the presidential election in 2011. Out of these, you got 10,078,356 votes [82.5% of the votes]from Hausa Fulani and Kanuri dominated states in North West Geopolitical Zone [NWGZ] and North East Geopolitical Zone [NEGZ]. From your geopolitical zone alone, NWGZ, you secured 53% [ 6,453,437 votes] of the total votes, [12,214,853 votes]. However, you did not secure the mandatory 25% of votes cast in any state in the south. Though you did not even campaign in those states, you expected Nigerians in those states to vote for you, Sir, what do you take them for? As expected, you said the elections were rigged in those states which you did not win, but free, fair and credible in those states which you won. The fact is that whether you campaign or not, you will always win elections in those Hausa Fulani and Kanuri dominated states. But Sir, the opinions held by a high percentage of the rest Nigerians about you are just too negative. Some of your praise singers are collaborating with Sahara Reporter Newspaper to produce bogus online opinion polls in your favour. Sir, you may wish to hold political rallies outside Hausa Fulani/Kanuri dominated towns to see things for yourself.

5. Sir, your real supporters are product of Almajiri System of Islamic Education whose upbringing does not permit independent and logical analysis of any situation. They are programmed to accept whatever their leaders tell them without reasoning. They consider the use of violence to settle any dispute as a norm and they rarely travel out of their immediate environments. They believe that implementation of Sharia Laws will transform Nigeria into a paradise and they strongly believe that you are the only trustworthy politician who will guarantee Sharia Laws in Nigeria. They believe that Hausa Fulani Muslims constitute 80% of Nigerian population and because of this mindset, they conclude that you must win in any election even if nobody votes for you in other parts of the country. Unfortunately Sir, you also believe that you are so popular that no Nigerian politician can defeat you in a free and fair election, hence, your penchant to condemn any election as being rigged whenever you do not win. Sir, the truth is, most non-Hausa Fulani/Kanuri Nigerians do not want you as their leader for whatever reason.

6. Judging from your antecedent Sir, election is only free, fair and credible when you win. You emerged as a presidential candidate in 2003, 2007 and 2011 through consensus arrangement. You want APC’s presidential candidate, preferably you, to emerge through consensus. Now, Hausa Fulani pressure groups such as ACF and NEF have sprung into action to cause Tambuwal, Atiku and Kwankwaso to step down for you. As for Sam Nda-Isaiah, since he is not a Hausa Fulani Muslim, ACF and NEF do not consider it worthy to even approach him to step down for you. Sir, if you are as popular as you believe, please go through indirect primary election with the rest presidential aspirants, stop begging Senator Tinubu to anoint you APC’s presidential candidate and withdraw your ‘attack dogs’ from further intimidating other presidential aspirants to step down for you.

7. Sir, you are reputed to be an incorruptible retired General with impeccable integrity. These two qualities had been your unique selling points amongst politicians, but two decisions you took of recent have cast doubt on them. In 2011 you promised that you would never contest for elective office again and sealed it with a rich dose of tears. Last month in Abuja, you dishonored that promise because according to you, many Nigerians begged you to come and ‘rescue the nation’. You said a delegation from Niger state and another one from Kano state came to beg you. Sir, can you also mention any delegation that begged you from any non-Hausa Fulani state, none for sure. Recently, you said Mallam El Rufai was the one who prevailed on you to change your mind. You described him as ‘ a kind of person that will respect you if you respect yourself and if you don’t respect yourself, he will help you go down the drain.’ Sir. when he insulted you and described you as a ‘perpetually unelectable ‘ person in 2010, was it because you did not respect yourself? Sir, it seems you have embraced doublespeak as a tool in your political career, so, under what circumstance will it be advisable for Nigerians to believe anything you say again?

8. Sir, as if the self-mutilation of your much trumpeted ‘impeccable integrity’ was not enough, you told Nigerians how you got a loan of N27.5 million on a ‘man know man basis’ from a Bank in Kaduna by telephone call in less than 12 hours without a collateral to buy APC nomination forms. Sir, these are your words ‘ N27.5 million is a big sum, thankfully I have a personal relationship with the manager of my bank in Kaduna and early this morning, I put an early call, I told him that very soon the forms are coming so, whether I am on red or green or even black, please honour it, otherwise I may lose the nomination’. Sir, please, ignore your ‘praise singers and attack dogs’ but enlist the services of lawyers who will be sincere and bold enough to explain the full weight of this transaction to you. Every aspect of this transaction is corruption personified. If you are this poor, whether you win or not, how do you intend to repay the loan? How will you fund your campaigns? Is it the right thing for a poor person to borrow N27.5 million from a bank without collateral and invest the whole money in gambling [politics]? Sir, a lot of questions begging for answers. In a society where politicians respect themselves and do not see election as a do or die issue, the least you ought to have done since, is to return people’s money [N27.5m] to the owners [the Bank], apologize to Nigerians and withdraw from partisan politics. But here in Nigeria, anything goes, especially when one’s ability to reason objectively is irretrievably impaired by ‘born-to-rule’ syndrome and chronic desperation.

9. Sir, no person or delegation prevailed on you to change your mind and re-contest in 2015 but the following reasons. The first is the massive movement of Hausa Fulani Muslims to southern Nigeria to register and vote for you in 2015. With this, you hope to secure the mandatory 25% of total votes cast in each of the 17 states in southern Nigeria. The current widespread confusion associated with PVCs distribution and registration of new voters in southern Nigeria is purposely engineered by INEC to accommodate this plan. The second is the plan by Professor Attahiru Jega to create 21,615 Polling Units for the north as against only 8,412 Polling Units for the south. Though Professor Jega had reluctantly suspended this plan which he designed to give you undeserved 10,807,500 votes, he had opted for Plan ‘B’ which is to replace commissioners in the south with those in the north in order to manipulate 2015 presidential elections in your favour. The third is Senator Tinubu’s promise to deliver Yoruba votes to APC in 2015. You believe this because Senator Tinubu had already demonstrated his willingness to repeat the mistake of Aare Ona Kakanfo Afonja of Oyo Empire who collaborated with itinerant Fulani charm maker, Alimi in 19th century to ‘donate’ Ilorin to itinerant Fulani herdsmen. Because of above reasons, you concluded that your chance to emerge victorious in any presidential election had never been so bright, hence, you prevailed on yourself to dishonor your promise and re-contest in 2015.

10. Sir, you are one of a few Nigerians who had been blessed by Allah/God, even to a fault. You have been a General Officer Commanding, Military Governor, Federal Commissioner of NNPC, Head of State and C-in-C of Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairman of PTF just to mention a few. At a ripe age of 72, what do you want again from Allah/God? In 2011, ten [10] youth coppers were among hundreds of innocent non-Hausa Fulani/Kanuri Nigerians slaughtered by your supporters in northern Nigeria even before INEC announced the results of the presidential election. As if that is not bloody and despicable enough, you have promised to soak non-Hausa Fulani/Kanuri Nigerians whom you prefer to call ‘dogs and baboons’ in blood if you lose presidential election in 2015. If one may ask, after butchering these Nigerians you call ‘dogs and baboons’ in 2015, what next? Sir, you may be ‘untouchable’ with millions of human robots [almajiri supporters] at your command to do whatever you like here on earth, but note that one day, you will stand before your creator [Allah/God] alone for judgement.

11. People of Niger Delta believe that you are amongst core north politicians who sponsor Boko Haram terrorists and Fulani herdsmen to destabilize Jonathan’s administration. Consequently, if you win in 2015, they will also make your government ungovernable by disrupting oil and gas production throughout the period of your government. Due to non availability of funds, it will be difficult for governments at all levels to function. Funding for security forces will be considerably reduced thereby weakening their capacity and commitment to fight Boko Haram terrorists, Fulani herdsmen and militants in the creeks of Niger Delta. The environment so created will be conducive for Boko Haram terrorists to easily achieve their aim of establishing a Caliphate at least in north eastern states. The center will be too weak to enforce laws and order thereby encouraging ‘self help’ and gradual but sustained disintegration of the nation. Sir, with the same zeal that galvanizes you to continuously re-contest, please do use it to arrange for alternative sources of revenue because it will never be business as usual as far as oil and gas revenue is concerned, or else be prepared to go down in history as a Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachov of Nigeria.

12. And if you lose the presidential election in 2015, there will be serious problems also but unlike in 2011, you now have a reliable partner, Senator Tinubu in SWGZ. While you pledged to soak ‘dogs and baboons’ in blood in the north if you lose next year’s presidential election, your partner, Senator Tinubu equally promised to roast Nigerians alive in the south if APC does not win next year. Since both of you had never accepted defeat in any election however credible it may be, the country is most likely to go up in flames if you lose the presidential election. However, both of you have nothing to lose if that happens because each of you is above 60 years old. Secondly, while Tinubu can easily flee with his family in his private jet to ‘Toronto’, you also can evacuate your family to Sudan in your bullet proof jeeps. But Sir, as you orchestrate destruction of lives and properties of non-Hausa Fulani/Kanuri Nigerians in Hausa Fulani controlled parts of northern Nigeria, note that there are millions of innocent, hardworking, peace loving Hausa Fulani/Kanuri Nigerians living in the rest parts of Nigeria, because this time around, there may be disproportionate and uncontrolled reprisal attacks.

13. Sir, whether you win or not, your participation as a presidential candidate in 2015 will unleash unprecedented disaster on this nation. Please step aside for the sake of unity and survival of Nigeria. Anoint and give your total support to any northerner of your choice for the job. But Sir, if you decide to listen to the El Rufais whose primary aim is to use your popularity to achieve their political ambitions, you will definitely dismiss this suggestion and even the advise earlier given to you by the revered Sheik Gumi as arrant nonsense. May Allah/God grant our leaders the grace to conduct themselves as leaders.

RomancePlease Young Ladies, Cover Your Buttocks (low-waist Trousers) by bestads(op): 12:55am On Nov 29, 2014
this is the source ooohhh http://www.brimtime.com/2014/11/please-young-ladies-cover-your-buttocks.html?m=1

Oh my God, what sort of temptation is this, please young lady, cover your buttocks. You are making me feel uncomfortable, exposing it.” “Oga what is your business with my ‘backside’; wetin your eye find go there, abeg no just disturb me again, unless both of us go put leg for the same trouser inside this bus.”

Funny enough, this exchange took place weekend inside a commercial bus which I boarded recently to Agege, Lagos, between a man in his late 50s and a young lady, assumed to be a student of one of the nation’s tertiary institutions in her mid-20s.

The mild drama started when the man unfortunately let his eyes catch a glimpse of the young lady’s exposed ‘bums’ (buttocks), as a result of the kind of pair of trousers she was putting on, I mean the popular “Low-waist trousers.”

Assuming the role of a father who would not want her children go astray, the man reprimanded the lady on the essence of not getting her body exposed. However, whether he did it in a friendly way or not, which made the young lady take offence and began to spit fire and brimstone on that fateful day, is not my major concern.

The low-waist trousers have become so popular these days amongst our female folks, especially in our tertiary institutions. Even though this wear exposes their bodies which Muslim and Christian faithfuls refer to as the temple of God, patronizers of these wears give reasons such as; it’s a Jeans that fit my petite shape, it’s what is in vogue; it makes me look attractive before guys and if you don’t have one, it means you belong to the oldies and a host of others.

These jeans come in varying sizes and shapes, depending on the waist size and hips of the wearer.

There are those meant for the ‘Orobos’ (fat ladies) and others meant for the ‘Lepacious’ babes (skinny ladies). They wear them to lecture theatres, birthday parties, hostel parties and jams, with outright disregard for the opposite sex, whom they consciously or unconsciously lead into temptation. The most glaring of this situation is a lady with this wear on a commercial motorcycle. Precious me! As a young guy, your prayer that moment will be the verse of the Lord’s Prayer which reads; “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from all evils…”

Be that as it may, the pertinent question remains: Have our tertiary institutions become dumping ground for outright display of nudity, rather than ivory towers for instilling morals? Could this trend be regarded as mere fashion, globalisation or aberration?

“In a typical civilized African culture, which Nigeria is a leading force, decency in dressing remains a core value handed down from one generation to another, but with the flippant display of the sensitive parts of the body by most female students, it has become a worrying departure from our cherished culture of deep respect for our bodies,” posits Chukwuma Okolie, a 300L student of the University of NigeriaNsukka (UNN).

For Adanma Nweze, a fresh graduate of Anambra State University (ANSU), Uli, the current trend which seems to be the fashion for most ladies is a far-cry from the legacies of our mothers. “During the days of our mothers, were they putting on low-waist jeans, show-me-your-back, show-me-your-boobs and what have you? Weren’t they looking attractive prompting our fathers to marry them? I believe that it is demonic for anyone to think that these kinds of wears will make her look attractive before men. Rather than looking attractive, it makes such a person look cheap before men.”

Nweze opined that men regard ladies who expose their buttocks in public as cheap prostitutes. Recalling how her female friend was publicly embarrassed at the Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State, she said: “Even though I have two or three of this wear, I have been always conscious to cover up with a long dress, especially when going out.

For one of my friends (names withheld), she was embarrassed by some traders at Onitsha Main Market recently because of the low-waist pair of trousers she was putting on which exposed her buttocks. One of the traders pounced on her from behind and threw sand into her buttocks. As this was happening, other male traders there started shouting at her and calling her ashewo (prostitute).”

In fact, I was totally embarrassed and felt pity for my friend, even though I had earlier warned her before we left home that fateful day.” To the graduate of Marketing, she held that in the Eastern and Northern parts of the country, the trend is at lower ebb as compared to the West, especially Lagos.

She ascertained that adults in the Eastern part of the country would not tolerate a younger one exposing what ought not to be exposed. “Lagos is a no man’s land, so anything goes,” she submitted.

On her part, Adewunmi Adeoye, a 300L student of Lagos State University, affirmed that low-waist and exposure of the buttocks is not a good way of dressing. “It does not make the adherents look responsible. Even though they think it’s the latest fashion in vogue, I disagree. I think its outright stupidity, because what you are meant to hide, you are exposing it.”

Asked if she has one, Adeoye held that she puts on the pair of trousers occasionally. “I know it is band-less, so I wear a long top to cover up.”

Even though Charles Bakare, a final year student of the University of Ibadan (UI), blamed this trend to parental upbringing, he had that these female folks knowing fully well that they possess romantic powers, use what they have to get what they want. “It may not be surprising that some of them go as far as show-casing their back-sides to male lecturers, whom they cow into awarding them undeserved marks for their courses.”

Similarly, Ajala Lawrence, a Mass Communication student of Lagos State University apportioned the blame of this trend to the media. According to him, “the media through the Agenda-Setting and Cultivation theories have instilled this wrong sense of dress code to our gullible young female folks.”

Surprisingly, even as these attires are worn to worship centres within and outside campuses, Akinwale Wavesglory, another student cleric admonished that religious leaders have a lot to do in preaching the right doctrines to these folks.

“Perhaps, they should read the portion of the bible Deuteronomy 22 vs. 5 where God warned against women putting on wears meant for men and vice versa. God hates people who do this, Also, Romans 6 vs. 18 also warned that we should use our bodies to glorify God Almighty, rather than exposing it to sexual immoralities,” - Vanguard.

Atiku Abubakar (born 25 November 1946) is a Nigerian politician, businessman and philanthropist, who served as the 2nd elected Vice-President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007, on the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), with President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Abubakar worked in the Nigeria Customs Service for twenty years, rising to become the Deputy Director, as the second highest position in the Service was then known. He retired in April 1989 and took up full-time business and politics. He ran for the office of Governor in the Gongola State (now Adamawa and Taraba States) in 1991, and for the Presidency in 1993, placing third after MKO Abiola and Babagana Kingibe in the Social Democratic Party (SDP) primaries.

In 1998 he was elected Governor of Adamawa State. While still Governor-Elect he was selected by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential candidate Olusegun Obasanjo as his running mate. The duo went on to win elections in February 1999, and Abubakar was sworn-in as Nigeria's second democratically elected Vice President on May 29, 1999.

Abubakar's second term as Vice President was marked by a stormy relationship with President Obasanjo. His bid to succeed Obasanjo did not receive the latter's support, and it took a judgment of the Supreme Court to allow Abubakar contest after he was initially disqualified by the Independent National Electoral Commission on the grounds that he had been indicted for financial misconduct by an investigating panel set up at Obasanjo's behest. The Supreme Court decision ordered the electoral commission to restore Abubakar's name onto the presidential ballot. Abubakar ran on the platform of the Action Congress, having quit the PDP on account of his issues with President Obasanjo. Atiku lost the election, placing third after Umaru Yar'Adua and Muhammadu Buhari of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).

Atiku is a co-founder of Intels, an oil servicing business with extensive operations in Nigeria and abroad. He is also the founder of Adama Beverages Limited, and the American University of Nigeria (AUN), both in Yola.

Early life[edit]
Atiku Abubakar was born to an itinerant Fulani trader and farmer Garba Abubakar, and his second wife, Aisha Kande, in Jada village in what is today Adamawa State. He was named for his paternal grandfather, Atiku Abdulkadir. An older sister died in infancy, making Atiku the only child of his parents who divorced before his father's death by drowning in 1957. Atiku's early years were spent in Kojoli, 30 kilometres east of Jada. His mother later remarried. She died of a heart attack in 1984.

Education[edit]
Like many of his generation, Atiku's father was opposed to the idea of Western education, and tried to keep Atiku out of the traditional school system. When the government discovered that Atiku was not attending mandatory schooling his father spent a few days in jail until Aisha Kande's mother paid the fine.[1]
At the age of eight Atiku enrolled in the Jada Primary School where he performed well. In 1960, he was admitted to the prestigious Adamawa Provincial Secondary School in Yola where he did well in English Language and Literature, struggled with Physics and Chemistry and Mathematics. He graduated with a Grade Three WASC/GCE Certificate in 1965.

Following secondary school, Atiku studied a short while at the Nigeria Police College in Kaduna. He left the College when he was unable to present an O-Level Mathematics result.[2] He worked briefly as a Tax Officer in the regional Ministry of Finance, from where he gained admission to the School of Hygiene in Kano in 1966.
He graduated with a Diploma in 1967, having served as Interim Student Union President at the School. In 1967 he enrolled for a Law Diploma at the Ahmadu Bello University Institute of Administration, on a scholarship from regional government. After graduation in 1969, during the Nigerian Civil War, he was employed by the Nigeria Customs Service.

Marriages and Family[edit]
While at Idi-Iroko Atiku met nineteen year old Titilayo Albert, who he secretly married in December 1971, in Lagos, because her family was initially opposed to the union. On 26 October 1972, Titilayo (affectionately called 'Titi') delivered a baby girl they named Fatima. She later gave birth to Adamu, Halima and Aminu.

In January 1979 he married Ladi Yakubu as his second wife. "I wanted to expand the Abubakar family. I felt extremely lonely as a child. I had no brother and no sister. I did not want my children to be as lonely as I was. This is why I married more than one wife. My wives are my sisters, my friends, and my advisers and they complement one another," Abubakar has said.[3] He has six children with Ladi: Abba, Atiku, Zainab, Ummi-Hauwa, Maryam and Rukayatu.

In 1983 he married his third wife, Princess Rukaiyatu, daughter of the late Lamido of Adamawa. She gave birth to AIsha, Hadiza, Aliyu (named after her late father), Asmau, Mustafa, Laila and Abdulsalam. His fourth wife, Fatima Shettima, followed in 1986. Fatima gave birth to her first child Amina (Meena), Mohammed and two sets of twins Ahmed and Shehu, Zainab and Aisha then her last daughter Hafsat.

Abubakar later divorced Ladi, allowing him to marry, as his fourth wife (the maximum permitted him as a Muslim), Jennifer Iwenjora, who then became Jamila Atiku-Abubakar. Jennifer gave birth to Abdulmalik, Zara and his youngest child, Faisal.

Civil Service Career[edit]
Atiku’s Customs career commenced on 30 June 1969, service number 7370. His first posting, after a training stint at the Police College and the Customs Training School in Lagos, was to Idi-Iroko, a border town between Nigeria and Benin Republic. It was not only his first time in Lagos, it was the first time he was leaving northern Nigeria.
Atiku has spoken about the carefree days at Idi-Iroko, partying late into the night in Lagos and then driving to the border post to resume duties in the morning. His assignments included the Lagos Airport, Apapa Ports (1974), Ibadan Customs Command (1975), Kano Command (1976), Maiduguri (Area Comptroller, 1977), Kaduna (1980) and the Apapa Ports in 1982.

In April 1984, Atiku’s name was associated with a scandal that made headlines in Nigeria, involving the Lagos Airport Customs Command where he was serving as Area Administrator. An influential Northern Emir had flown into Nigeria from Saudi Arabia with several suitcases with unknown contents. The new military government had recently phased out the old naira currency and replaced it with new notes, as part of efforts to cripple corrupt politicians who had stashes of stolen cash in their possession.

Orders had been given to ensure that all luggage entering the country was properly screened to prevent smuggling of the old notes. The Emir had refused to submit himself for Customs Clearance. A Customs Officers leaked the story to a newspaper, setting off a scandal. As the Customs Officer in charge of the airport, Atiku was inevitably named in the story. According to his biographer, he was put under tremendous pressure to deny the incident ever took place, but he stood his ground and refused to deny it, almost costing him his job.[4]

In 1987 Atiku was promoted Deputy Director of Customs and Excise in charge of Enforcement and Drugs, one of six deputies to the Head of the Nigeria Customs Service. In April 1989, aged 43, Atiku voluntarily retired from Customs, having failed in his bid to be appointed Director in 1988.[5]

Business[edit]
Atiku started out in the real estate business during his early days as a Customs Officer. In 1974 he applied for and received a 31,000 naira loan to build his first house in Yola, which he put up for rent. From proceeds of the rent he purchased another plot, and built a second house. He continued this way, building a sizeable portfolio of property in Yola.

In 1981 he moved into agriculture, acquiring 2,500 hectares of land near Yola to start a maize and cotton farm. The business fell on hard times and closed in 1986. "My first foray into agriculture, in the 1980s, ended in failure," he wrote in an April 2014 blog.[6]

He then ventured into trading, buying and selling truckloads of rice, flour and sugar.

His most important business move came while he was a Customs Officer at the Apapa Ports. Gabrielle Volpi, an Italian businessman in Nigeria, invited him to set up Nigeria Container Services (NICOTES), a logistics company operating within the Ports. NICOTES would go on to provide immense wealth to Atiku. Conflict of interest accusations have since trailed him on account of his involvement in business while a civil servant, who exercised supervisory authority.

On his part, Atiku has defended the decision, saying his involvement was limited to the ownership of shares (which government rules permitted), and that he was not involved in day-to-day running of the business. NICOTES would later be rebranded INTELS, and go on to feature prominently in accusations of money laundering levelled against Atiku by the US government during his Vice Presidency.

Atiku's business empire also includes a beverage manufacturing plant in Yola, as well as an animal feed factory.

Politics[edit]
Atiku’s first foray into politics was in the early 1980s, when he worked behind-the-scenes on the governorship campaign of Bamanga Tukur, who at that time was managing director of the Nigeria Ports Authority. He canvassed for votes on behalf of Tukur, and also donated to the campaign. Towards the end of his Customs career, he met Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, who had been second-in-command of the military government that ruled Nigeria between 1976 and 1979. Atiku was drawn by Yar'Adua into the political meetings that were now happening regularly in Yar'Adua's Lagos home. In 1989 Atiku was elected a National Vice-Chairman of the Peoples Front of Nigeria, the political association led by Yar'Adua, to participate in the transition programme initiated by Head of State Ibrahim Babangida.

Atiku won a seat to represent his constituency at the 1989 Constituent Assembly, set up to decide a new constitution for Nigeria. The People's Front was eventually denied registration by the government (none of the groups that applied was registered), and found a place within the Social Democratic Party, one of the two parties decreed into existence by the regime.

First Governorship Run (1990)[edit]
On 1 September 1990, Atiku announced his Gongola State gubernatorial bid. A year later, before the elections could hold, Gongola State was broken up into two – Adamawa and Taraba States – by the Federal Government. Atiku fell into the new Adamawa State. After an acrimonious contest he won the SDP Primaries in November 1991, but was soon disqualified by government from contesting the elections.

First Presidential Run (1992)[edit]
A similar fate – disqualification by the military – would befall Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, Atiku's friend and political mentor, in his 1992 bid for the presidential primary of the SDP. With no chance of contesting for the presidency, Yar'Adua decided to push Atiku forward as the focal point of SDP's ambitions. Atiku came third in the convention primary. But because MKO Abiola, the winner, had won by only about 400 votes a run-off was due. Atiku stepped down for Abiola, asking his supporters to cast their votes for him, with an unwritten agreement that Abiola would announce Atiku as his running mate. Abiola won the SDP ticket, and announced Babagana Kingibe, the runner-up, as his running mate.

Second Governorship Run (1998)[edit]
In 1998 Atiku launched a bid for the governorship of Adamawa State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. He won the December 1998 elections, but before he could be sworn in he was tapped by the PDP's presidential candidate, former Head of State Olusegun Obasanjo, as his vice-presidential candidate. The Obasanjo-Atiku ticket won 27 February 1999 Presidential Elections with 62.78 percent of the vote.[7]

Vice Presidency (1999–2007)[edit]
Atiku Abubakar was sworn in as Vice-President of Nigeria on 29 May 1999. He presided over the National Council on Privatization, overseeing the sale of hundreds of loss-making and poorly managed public enterprises.

In 1999 he, alongside then South African Deputy President Jacob Zuma, launched the South Africa Nigeria Binational Commission.[8]

In 2006, Atiku was involved in a bitter public battle with his boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo, ostensibly arising from the latter's bid to amend certain provisions of the constitution to take another shot at the presidency (for the third consecutive time).[9]

In a November 2013 interview Atiku is quoted as saying, regarding Obasanjo's alleged attempts to justify his third term bid: "[He] informed me that 'I left power twenty years ago, I left Mubarak in office, I left Mugabe in office, I left Eyadema in office, I left Umar Bongo, and even Paul Biya and I came back and they are still in power; and I just did eight years and you are asking me to go; why?' And I responded to him by telling him that Nigeria is not Libya, not Egypt, not Cameroun, and not Togo; I said you must leave; even if it means both of us lose out, but you cannot stay.”[10]

The debate and acrimony generated by the failed constitutional amendment momentarily caused a rift in the People's Democratic Party. The Nigerian National Assembly eventually voted against any amendments allowing Obasanjo to run for another term.[11]

The Atiku-Obasanjo face-off damaged the personal relationship between both men.

Second Presidential Run (2006–2007)[edit]
On 25 November 2006 Abubakar announced that he would run for President. On 20 December 2006, he was chosen as the presidential candidate of the Action Congress (AC).[12]

On 14 March 2007, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the final list of 24 aspirants for 21 April presidential election. Abubakar's name was missing from the ballot. INEC issued a statement stating that Abubakar's name was missing because he was on a list of persons indicted for corruption by a panel set up by the government.[13] Abubakar headed to the courts on 16 March to have his disqualification overturned.

The Supreme Court unanimously ruled on 16 April that INEC had no power to disqualify candidates.[14]

The ruling allowed Abubakar to contest the election, although there were concerns that it might not be possible to provide ballots with Abubakar's name by 21 April, the date of the election. On 17 April, a spokesman for INEC said that Abubakar would be on the ballot.

According to official results, Abubakar took third place, behind PDP candidate Umaru Yar'Adua and ANPP candidate Muhammadu Buhari, with approximately 7% of the vote (2.6 million votes). Abubakar rejected the election results and called for its cancellation, describing it as Nigeria's "worst election ever."[15]

He stated that he would not attend Umaru Yar'Adua's inauguration on 29 May due to his view that the election was not credible, saying that he did not want to "dignify such a hollow ritual with my presence."[16]

Post Vice-Presidency[edit]
Third Presidential Run (2011)[edit]
Following the 2007 elections, Atiku returned to the People's Democratic Party. In October 2010 he announced his intention to contest for the Presidency. On 22 November, a Committee of Northern Elders selected him as the Northern Consensus Candidate, over former Military President Ibrahim Babangida, former National Security Adviser Aliyu Gusau and Governor Bukola Saraki of Kwara State.[17]

In January 2011, Atiku contested for the Presidential ticket of his party alongside President Jonathan and Sarah Jubril, and lost the primary, garnering 805 votes to President Jonathan's 2736.[18]

Relationship with President Obasanjo[edit]
On March 30, 2014, Nigerian media reported that a delegation from the Northern Youth Leaders Forum visited Obasanjo at his home in Abeokuta and pleaded with him to "forgive your former vice-president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of whatever political sin or offence he might have committed against you." In response Obasanjo is quoted as saying that "as a leader and father, I bear no grudge against anybody and if there is, I have forgiven them all.”[19]

Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM)[edit]
In August 2013, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) registered two new political parties. One of them was the Peoples Democratic Movement. Local media reports suggested that the party was formed by Atiku as a back-up plan in case the he was unable to fulfill his rumoured presidential ambitions on the PDP platform.[20] In a statement Atiku acknowledged that the PDM was founded by his "political associates", but that he remained a member of the PDP.[21]

All Progressives Congress[edit]
On 2 February 2014, Atiku left the Peoples Democratic Party to the join All Progressives Congress.[22] According to local media reports, he will be seeking to contest for the Nigerian presidency in 2015, on the party's platform.[23]

Philanthropy & Education[edit]
American University of Nigeria (AUN) is the first American-style university to be established in Sub-Saharan Africa. It was founded in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State as ABTI American University of Nigeria (AAUN) by Atiku in 2005. He has said that having benefited from the US system of instruction as a young man, he was eager to make available in Nigeria an American trained faculty – emphasising critical thinking, small classes, student participation, problem-solving. AUN has received special recognition from Google. The University also featured prominently in a $40 million money-laundering investigation by the United States Senate, targeted at Abubakar and his business interests.[24]

In 2012 Atiku donated $750,000 to the National Peace Corps Association in the United States, "to fund a new initiative featuring global leaders who will discuss Peace Corps's impact." It was the largest ever individual donation in the Association's history.[25]

In his speeches and commentary Atiku is a vocal advocate of the importance of Nigeria's educational system. In August 2013 he sponsored a students' essay contest to generate solutions to Nigeria's most pressing institutional educational challenges. Entrants were asked to write between 2,000 and 5,000 words on the topic 'More Learning to More People: How can Nigeria be more innovative in bridging its literacy and skills gap?'.[26]

A longlist was announced on October 21, 2013,[27] and the winners a week later. The joint first prize went to Kenechukwu Nneka Lily Nwagbo and Emeka Chigozie Ezekwesiri.[28][29]

Upon the release of the dismal results of the May–June 2014 West African Examinations Council (WAEC) results,[30] Atiku said, in a statement:

″Our country’s educational institutions are clearly not providing quality learning. Our teachers need to be taught. This situation is a new development—of the past 10 years or so. The steady decline of education in Nigeria is a reflection of our country’s relegation of education to the background of national essentialities. That is where the change must begin. Teachers are important—as important as senators and doctors. Indeed, teachers determine the quality of senators and doctors. And so, the entire country stands to suffer the effects of this neglect in future. Nigeria must once again make education a priority. We must return to the basics.″[31]

In a bid to alleviate the educational decadence in Northeastern Nigeria, Abubakar issued scholarship to 15 escapees of the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping.[32]
