Christianity EtcNew Section: Christianity For Christians Must Be Formed By Seun by bestads(op): 5:42pm On Oct 07, 2014
I see no reason why moslems are allowed to start and reply topic in the religion section when they have "islam for moslems" section.

The xtians cannot post or reply topics in "islam for moslems" section unless you renounce your faith to accept Islam, this is the same method of aggression they use for coercing people to accept islam is what is been done on nairaland.

So Seun or whoever is concerned, please create a new section under religion called "Christianity for Christians" and the condition for anyone to start topics or reply any topic is that the person must accept Jesus Christ as his/her Lord and Saviour.

Not only islam is a religion of peace, Christianity is a religion of peace as well

Christianity EtcThe Spiritual Battle Against The Behemoth Of Islam by bestads(op): 6:34am On Oct 07, 2014
http://www.charismanews.com/opinion/watchman-on-the-wall/45632-the-spiritual-battle-against-the-behemoth-of-islam?utm_medium=MostPopularArticles_UnderArticle

An ancient behemoth has mounted an antichrist campaign to eradicate the gospel from the Earth. The behemoth of Islam is unleashing religious terror unlike anything our generation has witnessed—and steadily advancing in the nations.

John Eckhardt, overseer of Crusaders Ministries in Chicago, explains that behemoths are spiritual strongholds that must be broken in order to see millions of people released from darkness and come into the glorious light of the knowledge of Jesus Christ.

You can find a scriptural reference in Job 40:15: "Look now at the behemoth, which I made along with you; he eats grass like an ox." Merriam-Webster actually defines behemoth as "a mighty animal described in Job 40:15-24 as an example of the power of God" and "something of monstrous size, power or appearance."

"A behemoth is any system large enough in size or power to oppress multitudes of people," Eckhardt explains. "It can be a religious, political, cultural or economic system—and even a blend of those, as in the case with communism. Behemoths are erected by the enemy to keep the gospel out and multitudes of people in darkness."

It's abundantly clear that the behemoth of Islam is rising.

Iraqi Christians are facing extinction as leaders of this demonic movement gain momentum in a holy war that aims to establish a caliphate (an Islamic-ruled state) led by a religious and political leader (caliph) who is a successor to the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Whether you call it ISIS, ISIL or the Islamic State, the behemoth of Islam and its radical jihadist adherents are releasing heart-gripping fear through propaganda and beheadings of men, women and children in a quest to dominate the nations of the Earth.

Political and prophetic voices alike are warning the Islamic State will wreak natural havoc on Western soil if we don't rise up against it. Rick Joyner, founder of Morningstar Ministries, issued a warning after receiving a disturbing prophetic dream about ISIS's intent in America.

"I have done in-depth studies of the cruelty in the Middle Ages, but this was a whole new level of demonic cruelty. It wasn't just about killing people," Joyner said. "It was about bringing as much absolute pain, terror and everything else you can before death."

Considering the gruesome images circulating in Islamic media that show jihadists herding Christians like cattle to mass executions and Muslim extremists sawing off people's heads with small knives, Joyner's prophetic experience is not far-fetched. In response to the violence, America has launched airstrikes that have merely inflamed this behemoth's hatred and spawned more terrifying threats against the nation.

Former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair believes we need boots on the ground to defeat ISIS, but the truth is we need knees on the floor. In other words, we need to engage in effective, fervent spiritual warfare prayer against this behemoth spirit. This ancient stronghold is not easily broken—but it must bow to the Name of Jesus.

Cindy Jacobs, co-founder of Generals International, bore witness to Joyner's dream but offered hope and prophetic insight as to how to respond in an age where the reality of Luke 21:26—men's hearts failing them for fear—seems to be upon us.

"It's important not to get into fear. Fear and faith don't mix," Jacobs said, noting that she prays Psalm 91 for protection every day. "We need to pray for the president. We need to pray for the Pentagon. We need to pray for the Congress. We need to cry out for wisdom. Regardless of different partisan beliefs, we are commanded to pray for them. We must pray for them. Our future depends on our prayers ... and trust God that if we pray He will protect us. This is His Word, and these are His promises. God warns to protect."

Amen. I don't have all the answers about judgment and revival and retribution and awakening. Dutch Sheets has a prophetic revelation about our nation's first flag—long before the stars and stripes—which declares an "Appeal to Heaven" and depicts an evergreen tree signaling our covenant with our Everlasting God. Sheets is bringing hope to hundreds of thousands with his message even while Joyner and others are having dreams and visions of terror in our land.

Again, I don't have all the answers, but like David Ravenhill, the son of the late revivalist Leonard Ravenhill, I believe both prophetic perspectives are right. And I believe Jacobs' interpretation and application serve both sides of the prophetic coin: We need to pray, groan, travail and otherwise enter into Spirit-led intercession for this nation as we never have before to abate the enemy's plans.

There's no denying that the spirit of behemoth—this behemoth of Islam that's spawning radical extremism that is threatening our borders—must bow to the Name of Jesus. It's going to take more than binding the devil, though. It's going to take living and breathing a Scripture we're all especially familiar with right now:

"If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land" (2 Chron. 7:14).

Yes, we need to pray—but we need to do more than pray. We need to get busy being the church, labor to bring in the harvest, and reject any compromise of God's Word in our lives. Please hear me. Wake up. It's worse than you can see with your natural eyes. The time is short. Amen.

http://www.charismanews.com/opinion/heres-the-deal/45564-why-i-m-praying-for-teens-who-listen-to-nicki-minaj?utm_medium=MostPopularArticles_UnderArticleMobile

As kids, many of us eagerly awaited the next hilarious episode of Jed Clampett and his Beverly Hillbillies. Parents never gave a thought that there might be something objectionable on the popular TV sitcom.

Today moms and dads who care about wholesome entertainment for their children and teens have to be ultra-vigilant with the TV and computers due to disturbing trends in today's decadent culture.

Recently, USA Today commented, "Booty is the latest trend that music fans are getting behind—and the numbers back it up. In just three weeks, Nicki Minaj's 'Anaconda' video has seen nearly 170 million views on YouTube, snatching the record for most views in a day from Miley Cyrus' 'Wrecking Ball.'" (On Monday, the figure exceeded 212 million views.)

The latter featured the former "Hannah Montana" swinging completely nude on a wrecking ball while provocatively licking a hammer (it garnered the award for the best music video of the year). Minaj tells us, "I'm going to push the envelope," and goes deeper into the cesspool by not only highlighting her derriere in raunchy gyrations but offers a pornographic display that defies sensibilities.

Pastors and parents, it's time to wake up! Nicki Minaj, Miley Cyrus, Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga and a parade of vixens being put before our youth needs to be exposed once and for all.

This is NOT a harmless trend treated with a wink and a nod and a little chuckle. What's happening in the music industry is undermining morality while promoting promiscuity. Our assignment is clear: Monitor our children's entertainment while making young disciples who know how to "extract the precious from the worthless" (Jer. 15:19).

Here's the Deal: This is Pornography!

In our day we are literally witnessing the outworking of Psalm 12:8, "The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men." And Isaiah 3:9, "They parade their sin like Sodom, they do not hide it."

Pastors and parents, we must be alert to the schemes of our adversary and identify his current activity. We must also speak up charitably yet boldly for righteousness, or there will be no conviction of sin that hinders God's presence in our homes and churches.

These modern-day Jezebels need our prayers to be delivered from their deception and to rescue them from judgment. Let's also pray for other, more wholesome female artists who can be influenced not to go a more edgy and risque way to remain "cool" as they age.

I think specifically here of Taylor Swift, who has just left our Nashville area for brighter lights in New York City. She's left country music and found a new friend in the "loose as a goose" Lena Dunham of Girls cable fame. Swift is currently on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine looking over her shoulder with an alluring "come-hither" look, tousled hair in a soaking wet T-shirt. "The Reinvention of Taylor Swift" is the title of the article. Time to intercede.

Many of these performers purport to be Christians! They literally join hands and pray before their concerts. Under the guise of artists and entertainers, they shamelessly strut their stuff while naively being applauded by people as influential as our own first lady. Mrs. Obama extols Beyoncé as a "true role model for children" and thanks her publicly for "being a role model kids everywhere can look up to."

advertisement
Minaj says she is a "Christian" whose "dad went to rehab, started attending church and got saved!" She tweets about Jesus and declares that God is her "hero." She tweets gratefully that her current hit featuring a barrage of buttocks is "A$$mazing."

Your children may be her followers because she's camouflaged herself very cleverly. She endorses Pepsi, Adidas and MAC cosmetics. She's been an American Idol judge; voice actress for the animated Ice Age kids film; and, dresses in attention-getting, ultra-colorful outfits. The New York Times says Minaj is "the most influential female rapper of all time."

Parents, beware. Her blockbuster music-video song "Anaconda" peaked at No. 2 on Billboard's top 100. Her last hit, "Stupid Hoe," achieved a rarity in that BET banned the video deeming it too raunchy even in these permissive days. When your kids put on their headphones, could they be listening to her catchy music?

I care deeply about young people. We have four children, four grandchildren and one more on the way. I am passionate about informing and challenging pastors and parents to awaken to the cultural realities of our generation as we increasingly awaken to our desperate need for heaven-sent revival before it's too late. The future of our families and nation hang in the balance.

I have just returned from a 10-day tour of Indiana where evangelist Joe Oden and I challenged 400 pastors and wives in Assemblies of God churches. When confronted with the urgency of the hour and cultural realities like I'm unfolding in this commentary, scores of leaders and young people repented of compromise and sinful practices that undermine a visitation in our day.

Parental Advisory: God Help Us Protect This Next Generation

While in Indiana I walked through the lobby of a Marriott hotel where there were a number of booths set up for some type of children/youth education fair. The very first booth was highlighting the LGBTQ agenda. The gay man seated at the table was giving out literature and told me that their organization provided a "safe place for children 12 and up to be affirmed as self-identifying gays and lesbians." Young people with same-sex attraction need to be helped in this discovery process, he told me.

In case you're wondering, you can be assured that I engaged the man for at least 15 minutes while I elevated my voice in a civil way so four or five other individuals manning booths could hear as I shared truth to dispel the lies and false information he was disseminating. Christians are called to be "salt" and "light," and that's exactly what I was.

Over dinner that evening Joe and I engaged our waitress and discovered that she had been living with her fiance for years, they had a 2-year-old son, and, of course, she was a faithful church-going "Christian." While we were as loving and kind as we could be, giving her a generous tip and calling over her manager while she was present to commend her for her excellent service, we took the opportunity to tell her privately that she was living in sexual immorality and that God could not bless her relationship. We lovingly appealed to her to repent and get right with God.

Our nation is at the tipping point. We are in a meltdown, and barring a transformative revival our nation will not survive. God is giving us a lifeline of opportunity to see things turned around as we humbly pray, speak up for righteousness, and carefully protect the young ones entrusted to our care.

Christianity EtcWhat The Python Spirit Really Wants by bestads(op): 6:08am On Oct 07, 2014
http://www.charismanews.com/opinion/45551-what-the-python-spirit-really-wants?utm_medium=MostPopularArticles_UnderArticleMobile

I didn't realize how strong is the spirit of python's chokehold on my region until I started to personally experience the effects of its presence. One of the only named spirits in the Bible, the python spirit is a coiling spirit that works to squeeze out the breathe of life (the Holy Spirit) and cut off your lifeline to God (prayer).

To accomplish its deadly agenda, this spirit will remind you of wounds from your past, surround you with ungodly influences that tempt you to compromise the Word of God—or just barrage you with circumstances that knock the wind out of you.

Symptoms of a python attack may include weariness, a loss of passion to worship and pray, feeling pressured, overwhelmed, helpless and even hopeless. The severity of those symptoms depends on how long this enemy has been coiling itself around you and how much pressure it has applied.

Let me show you this spirit in the Bible. You'll find it in Acts 16:16 when Paul encounters a girl possessed with a spirit of divination. The word divination in this verse comes from the Greek word for puthon, which translates in English as "python." Vine's Dictionary explains how Greek mythology believed the Pythian serpent guarded the oracle of Delphi until Apollo slew it (and then took on the name Pythian). The word was later applied to diviners or soothsayers, inspired by Apollo.

Attacking Your Prayer Life

Python can attack anyone. You don't have to be in sin to find python trying to slide under your door. Paul was a man of prayer. The Bible says he spoke in tongues more than anybody else in the Corinthian church (1 Cor. 14:18)—and probably more than anybody else in the early church.

Despite Paul's relationship with Christ and a strong prayer life, he still had to wrestle against principalities and powers and rulers of the darkness of this age and spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places (see Eph. 6:12). Paul had to wrestle against python—and so may we. Let's look at Paul's encounter with the python spirit.

"Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, 'These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.' And this she did for many days" (Acts 16:16-17).

The python spirit had a stronghold in Philippi. When the man of prayer started heading for the house of prayer, this spirit launched its first attack against him—a distraction followed by a full-blown trial that aimed to take him out of his purpose. Python knows it has no authority in a city that prays in the presence of God, so it works to distract people from praying so they can't fulfill their purpose.

Python would rather watch you lick your wounds than pray to a healing God. Python would rather hear you complain or gossip than take your problems to a miracle-working God. Python would rather distract you with attacks, trials and persecutions than see you press into a gracious God for deliverance. Again, python's ultimate goal is to put you in bondage and thwart your purpose. You may be going through the motions but you feel dead on the inside because python has squeezed the life out of you.

Loosed From Python's Grip

When you rise up in your Christ-given authority against python, the battle ensues. Paul cast the demon out of the girl, which meant her masters could no longer profit from her false prophecies. "They seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities" (Acts 16:19). From there, they were falsely accused, had their clothes torn off, were beaten with rods and thrown into prison with stocks on their feet.

Paul and Silas were in physical pain. They had been publicly humiliated. They were slandered and maligned. And they were in the grip of the python spirit. At this point, they had several options: They could lie there and lick their wounds. They could complain to one another about their situation. They could meditate on the persecution and decide to abandon their purpose in exchange for being set free. But they didn't do any of that. Thank God, they left us a model for how to break free from the python spirit.

"But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed" (Acts 16:25-26). Prayer and praise are what python is trying to stop, but prayer and praise will set you free.

Twas made known on Saturday that a large chunk of the funds used by the terrorist group, Boko Haram passes through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), unknown to many officials.

According to latest reports, this disclosure was made by an Australian, Dr Stephen Davis, who had close links with the terrorist group and had worked as a go-between for government during negotiation.

Davis, who said he was disclosing all he knew about the Islamist group because he could no longer bear what the kidnapped Chibok girls were going through, affirmed that Boko Haram commanders told him that a senior CBN official (names withheld) was fully involved in the funding of the insurgency.

Davis, in an interview with an online publication, TheCable, said Western countries could not trace the majority of the source of funding to Boko Haram because “it is done through a legal channel; through the gatekeeper; the CBN, and that makes it very easy to cover up.

“One of the biggest of suppliers of arms and military uniforms to the JAS (Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad), better known as Boko Haram, currently lives in Cairo, Egypt. He is the recipient of money sent by political sponsors from Nigeria. The funds go through the CBN’s financial system and appear to be legal transaction.”

Nyanya bombing suspects’ relative involved
Dr Davis spoke further that three of the suspected masterminds of the recent bombings in Nyanya area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, were relatives of the said CBN insider who facilitated movement of funds for the terrorists.

“Meanwhile, the CBN official who handles the funding is an uncle to three of those arrested in connection with the Nyanya bombings. The three boys lived with him. They were arrested by the Department of State Security (DSS) after the bombings, but they do not seem to have been interrogated about their uncle in CBN. Or if they have given up information about their uncle, then, the SSS has not moved against him.

“Also, a senior official of CBN, who recently left the bank, was very close to Sodiq Aminu Ogwuche, the mastermind of the Nyanya bombings who also schooled in Sudan. Boko Haram commanders said Ogwuche’s wife used to visit this top official in his office at the headquarters of the bank in Abuja before the Nyanya bombings. They were very close,” he said.

Why he opened up
Davis said he decided to come out to speak now because the Nigerian authorities were not acting fast and that he was heart-broken by the evils being done to the Chibok girls.

“I have three daughters. I just cannot stand the thought of what those girls are passing through. I have spoken to an escapee who described how she was being raped for 40 days by militants. I can’t stand it. It is heart-breaking.

“Nigerian authorities must act decisively now,” he said.

B/Haram also uses Chibok girls to get money
Davies also opened up on how members of the group may have been using the abducted girls in their captive as bargaining chips to extort money from government.

He said the terrorists were now in groups and each of the groups had some of the girls, who had also been divided into groups, in its custody.

According to another report by Daily Mail, the Australian expert disclosed that but for the money politics among the groups within Boko Haram, he would have helped the Nigerian government to secure release of about 60 of the girls.

Davies said he was within 15 minutes of achieving this when a rival group of Boko Haram members got wind of the huge money involved and moved the group of girls away from where it was supposed to be met.

The foreign media added that “the 63-year-old former Canon Emeritus at Coventry Cathedral in the United Kingdom (UK), who has extensive contacts with African terrorist groups, had been negotiating with Boko Haram commanders for some time before they agreed to release the girls.

“Mr Davis was asked to come to Nigeria by the country’s president for his hostage negotiation expertise, after previously brokering a truce between violent rebels and the government in the Niger Delta in 2004, when he was working for the oil company, Shell.”

According to the report, which also quoted ABC’s Radio National, Davies himself explained that “I made a few phone calls to the Boko Haram commanders and they confirmed they were in possession of the girls.

“They told me they’d be prepared to release some as a goodwill gesture towards a peace deal with the government. So, I went to Nigeria on the basis of being able to secure their release.

“This is a long process of building trust on both sides. There are several groups to deal with as the girls are held in several camps. This makes any thought of a rescue highly improbable. To attempt to rescue one group would only endanger the others.

“Every day, there was the possibility of the release of the girls.”

He added that upon negotiating strict conditions for the girls’ release, the rescue mission was sabotaged by “another group who hoped to cash in on the monetary reward being offered by Nigerian police for their retrieval.

“We travelled for four-and-a-half hours to reach them, but 15 minutes before we arrived, they were kidnapped again by another group who wanted to cash in on the reward.”

Obsolete arms militating against forces –Report
Meanwhile, insiders in military circles have proffered reasons for a slow start of full Nigerian military operations against the dreaded Islamic sect.

Details contained in a report submitted to the Nigerian authorities and which was examined at a recent top security meeting indicated that the Nigerian military was left with no new arms procurement since 1982 after the Shehu Shagari-led administration embarked upon the last massive arms procurement.

A source further told Sunday Tribune that “the military had not been empowered since the Shagari administration; every other regime after Shagari was involved in regime protection. This is the first time since after Shagari when the military is being fully equipped.”

Role of opposition
Another source also stated that internal opposition elements had also informed the slow operations of the military, as some of the politicians introduced ethnic and religious insinuations to the initial operations in the North-East.

Another reason for the slow start, according to the report, was the fact that the Nigerian military has largely not seen war in the last 20 years or so. It was also gathered that a good number of the men and officers who participated in Sierra Leone and Liberian wars had retired.

It was also indicated that terrorism, a global trend in recent years, is new to the Nigerian military and that the architecture to fight insurgency is not the same as for traditional warfare.

“Nigerians are not aware of the challenges the military is facing. The infrastructure that need restructuring are massive. Right now, the military is being repositioned and I am sure that when it is ready, it won’t take a long time for it to rout the insurgents,” another source stated.

Effect of coups
Besides, the technical analysis of the situation indicated that the military was practically demobilised as a result of two coups in the past. It was gathered that the Mamman Vatsa coup of 1987 saw to the demobilisation of the Air Force because reports had indicated that officers of the Force were to be massively deployed to bomb strategic places during the coup.

The Gideon Orkar coup of April 1990 was also said to have brought another albatross on the military as the Armoured Brigade was said to have been largely demobilised after the aborted coup.

Sources said since the two major aborted coups, the regimes continued with the implementation of regime protection policy.

“You don’t lay the blame for security lapses on the administration of President Jonathan. He is the one who is now empowering the military and ensuring that it maintains the rules of engagement and respect human rights at all times. We are assured that a more professional military will emerge out of the ongoing reforms. There would certainly be some dare devil squads which will deal decisively with anyone who plans to threaten the territorial integrity of Nigeria,” the source stated.

Excerpts from the interview

Can you share with us your experience with Boko Haram leaders?
Let me take you back a bit. I specialise in negotiation. It may interest you to know that I have been involved in peace negotiations in Nigeria since 2004 when President Olusegun Obasanjo invited me to intervene in the Niger Delta crisis. With a local Nigerian colleague, I spoke with Asari Dokubo and took him to Obasanjo at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Because Asari is a Muslim, the Muslim boys in the north heard about me and warmed up to me. I did a report in 2005 on the threat of extremism among young northern Muslims. Obasanjo’s security chiefs dismissed the report with a wave of the hand. They said no such thing existed. In 2007, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who desired to end militancy in the Niger Delta invited me and made me presidential envoy. I toured all the northern states. I went to the country’s borders. I came back with a report that there were some budding sects in the north. The national security adviser (NSA) at the time, Gen. Sarki Mukhtar, dismissed the report. He said they didn’t exist. A succession of NSAs dismissed all these reports and allowed the groups to flourish.

In all your discussions, did they name their sponsors?
They named the man who lives in Cairo. He is of the Kanuri tribe. He passes arms, ammunition and uniforms to them. The CBN official who handles the funding (name withheld by TheCable for legal reasons) is an uncle to three of those arrested in connection with the Nyanya bombings. The three boys lived with him.

They were arrested by the SSS (Department of State Security) after the bombings but they are yet to be interrogated about their uncle. The official still works with the CBN. He is still there. He works in currency operations. He knows how to handle the transaction in a way that it can never be traced. Western countries are frustrated that they cannot trace the funding.

How can they when it is passed on legally, through the gatekeeper, through the CBN? Also, a senior official of CBN, who recently left the bank, was very close to Sodiq Aminu Ogwuche, the mastermind of the Nyanya bombings who also schooled in Sudan. Ogwuche’s wife used to visit this official in his office at the headquarters in Abuja before the bombings.

They were very close. Don’t forget that the CBN official who handles the transactions also used to report to his superior, the official who recently left the bank. Also, there is a politician who was supplying operational vehicles for the suicide bombers.

How did you become involved in the negotiation for the release of the Chibok schoolgirls?
Because I had built trust among the militants, I made calls to them when I heard about the abductions. They confirmed to me that the girls were with them. I came to Nigeria in late April (the girls were abducted on April 14). I told the president I would try to intervene and help get the girls out. He said he would give me the needed support if I wanted. However, what I discovered was that thrice we tried to get the girls released, and thrice my efforts were sabotaged. That was when I now realised that some politicians were also involved in the insurgency. There were remnants of those involved in the former peace deal as well as a political arm and what I call the ritual arm which specialises in butchering human beings.

While I was making efforts to get the girls released, the political backers of the group threatened that if I got 30 or 40 girls out, the militants would kidnap another 60 to replace them. I became very frustrated. They threatened that any commander of the group who agreed to participate in any dialogue would be slaughtered by other commanders. The political sponsors are very powerful because they supply the finances and the arms. Until they are cut off from the group, those girls will not be released. We are talking about 200 Chibok schoolgirls, but there are over 300 other girls that have been kidnapped. There are many young men that they also kidnapped and turned them against their families. They asked them to go and slaughter their family members and they are doing it. Nobody is talking about those ones. They are the new child soldiers.

What deal were you seeking under Jonathan’s mandate?
The president wanted peace. He asked me to discuss with them so that we could arrive at the terms of peace. They came up with some terms that were acceptable and others that were not acceptable.

What were those terms?
They wanted training for the widows of their deceased fighters. They asked the government to give these women cottage training. They, ironically, wanted education for the children of their deceased members. That is why I don’t call them Boko Haram (“Western education is a taboo”). They asked that the children be sent to school. They also wanted the government to rebuild villages that were destroyed by the security agencies. They asked for amnesty as well.

What terms were unacceptable?
The president said he would not grant amnesty in the sense that they meant it. He said those who surrendered their arms would not be prosecuted, but those who continued to commit more crimes would face the law and would be charged with treason. They also wanted women and children who were being held in custody to be released. Their leaders that I spoke with were ready to accept the conditions. But the NSA then, Gen. Owoye Azazi, went vehemently against it. He said there should be no negotiation with terrorists. He completely turned the military against the peace deal I was working on, even though we were very close to bringing an end to the insurgency the same way we did it in the Niger Delta. The military then refused to back the deal. They succeeded in convincing the president not to accept it. I could understand where they were coming from: the security budget was like $6 billion and any peace deal would seriously reduce their budget.

How can we get these girls released?
The first thing is to stop the bagman who supplies weapons and military uniforms. We know his name, location and associates. If the man is stopped, the slaughterers, the ritual arm of the group, would be demobilised. The girls can be released afterwards. This man controls these ritualists.

Was there really any deal to release the girls?
Yes, there was. Some commanders of the group told me that they would first release 100 of the girls and that would be the first step towards dialogue. They needed a guarantee from President Jonathan that they would not be arrested or prosecuted if they showed up for dialogue. They agreed with me that if they did that and no one was arrested, then they would return to the camps to release the rest of the girls.

After getting discharged from the hospital, Dr. Kent Brantly has come out and thanked supporters for their prayers.

He and a fellow aid worker was taken to the US for treatment three weeks ago from Liberia where they contracted the disease, according to BBC.

He said: “Today is a miraculous day, I am thrilled to be alive, to be well, and to be reunited with my family. As a medical missionary, I never imagined myself in this position.

“When my family and I moved to Liberia two years ago, Ebola was not on the radar. We moved to Liberia because God called us to service in Liberia.”

He revealed that after his family returned to the US, he stayed back to help treat the Ebola patients and then one day he woke up feeling “under the weather”.

Brantly said he lay in bed for nine days, getting progressively sicker and weaker. On August 1, he was flown to Atlanta for treatment at Emory.

He said, “I cannot thank you enough for your prayers and your support, but what I can tell you is that I serve a God who answers prayers.

“God saved my life, a direct answer to thousands and thousands of prayers…Thank you to the Liberia community, Emory hospital and so many of you, my family, friends and church family.
“My family and I will now be going away for a period of time to reconnect, decompress and to continue to recover physically and emotionally. After I have recovered a little more and regained some of my strength, we will look forward to sharing more of our story.

“Above all, I am forever grateful to God for sparing my life and I’m glad for any attention my sickness has attracted to the plight of West Africa in the midst of this epidemic. Please continue to pray for Liberia and the people of West Africa and encourage physicians of leadership and influence to do everything possible to bring this Ebola outbreak to an end.”

Dr Kent Brantly was infected with the Ebola virus, but due to his government’s intervention was taken home and then treated with the new and experimental drug Zmapp.

The two-month ultimatum from the Northern Elders Forum to President Jonathan to rescue the abducted Chibok girls rekindles fault lines in the Nigerian nation
By Emmanuel Aziken, Political Editor
It was a battle they inherited from their ancestors. The faceoff that emerged yesterday between Afenifere, the Yoruba Socio Cultural group and the Northern Elders Forum, NEF over the feasibility and competence of President Goodluck Jonathan’s reelection was a recall of the mutual suspicion that existed between Nigeria’s first indigenous regional leaders.

While the conflict of the forefathers was essentially centered around regional domination, the conflict that burst yesterday is on the surface focused on the fate of the more than 200 Chibok secondary schools abducted last April.
At the peak of the distrust between Nigeria’s founding fathers, the late Northern leader, Sir Ahmadu Bello was quoted as saying that his priority in filling job vacancies in the north would be “first a northerner, then an expatriate and then a southerner and that on contract.”
Bello’s assertion was to be the basis of the chasm and subsequent hostility that shadowed relations between the two sides of the country since independence.
The hostility which was fueled by the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election Chief Moshood Abiola was only partially soothed by the election of General Olusegun Obasanjo as president in 1999. However, since the Obasanjo phenomenon and the relegation of the north from its position of political dominance, the seeming discomfort of the north in playing second fiddle in the polity has taken a central role in the polity.
It has been especially so under President Jonathan who has generally been affirmed to be Nigeria’s most “troubled” leader. Jonathan has been troubled by the insurgency fanned by what was once thought to be a mainly Islamic agenda. The Islamic Boko Haram group which started by killing Christians, burning and bombing churches has lately expanded its agenda to killing non conforming Islamic leaders bringing to question the real motif of the group.
While some allege that it still has an Islamic agenda, the gruesome and unrestrained brutality of the group has given vent to a political agenda.
So when the NEF last Monday urged President Jonathan to forget re-election if the Chibok girls are not returned, the group whether advertently or inadvertently rekindled the regional distrust that existed between the north and the south.
In a statement issued by Barrister Solomon Dalung and Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the group alleged that the ongoing insurgency in the north was aimed at politically and economically weakening the north to allow the easy reelection of President Jonathan.
“We also reject the notion that multiple internal security challenges such as attacks on villages, ethno-religions conflicts and banditry springing up by the day in many parts of the north are all a coincidence,” the statement said. “Indeed, we are convinced that most of these conflicts are being engineered to weaken the North politically and economically by interests which intend to exploit such weaknesses for electoral benefits.”
Alleging that the administration was deliberately allowing the crisis to fester, the NEF said:
“The lack of a strong will at the level of the presidency to fight it, as well as deep-seated corruption and incompetence in governments and in the management of our security challenges has allowed a band of terrorists to take and hold vast parts of our land and populations hostage, while every citizen lives in fear that they will be its next victim.”
The NEF which has such prominent Jonathan bashers as Dr. Junaid Mohammed, Prof. Ango Abdullahi in its fold and had never hidden its revulsion of a second term for Jonathan or the aspiration of any other southerner, was quick to push forward its most notable agenda, to wit, that Jonathan should not re-contest.
“In the light of our firm conviction that the insurgency and related security challenges pose threats to the 2015 elections and the survival of our nation, we strongly advise President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to bring an end to the insurgency in all its manifestations and produce the Chibok girls before the end of October, 2014. The circumstances under which our fellow citizens in and around Gwoza in Borno State in particular live and die will not be tolerated by any people who have a government and a leader sworn to defend them, and they must be reversed immediately. In the event that President Jonathan fails to do this, Nigerians will be left with the only conclusion that he has forfeited his right to ask for our mandate beyond 2015.”
Afenifere in a sharp rebuttal was quick to enter the fray yesterday. The group in a statement issued by its spokesman, Mr. Yinka Odumakin said the statement by the NEF was an exposure of the linkage between the Islamic Boko Haram sect and some northern elites.
“By linking the electoral fortune of President Jonathan in 2015 to “Bring Back Our Girls” latest by October as well as ending Boko Haram at the time, the “elders” have just confirmed the suspicions in the land that the activities of the Islamic Sect Boko Haram is either enjoying the sponsorship of some elites of the North or at the least having their sympathy.”
Afenifere was quick to spot out what it referred to as the unwillingness of the northern elders to condemn the activities of Boko Haram while focusing on the alleged failures of the president.
“In all the sound and fury of the Forum, we searched in vain any outright condemnation of Boko Haram. And this has .been the pattern of most reactions from the majority of the elites of the region who always appear politically correct to the insurgents while using their activities to rattle the government. The most audacious of this perfidy is this direct put by the Northern Elders Forum.”
“A traumatized country that has been held in anxiety over the fate of the abducted girls cannot but challenge these elders at this stage to appeal to their wards in Boko Haram to release the innocent young girls who now appear cannon fodders in the struggle for “we want our power back”.
“A time has come to let these elites know they can no longer play the ostrich by burying their heads in the sand and think no one sees them because they are seeing no one.”
“We, however, frown at the disingenuous attempt by unconscionable elites who are now dishing out two months ultimatum to end an insurgency that they prepared the atmosphere for in decades of exploitation and iniquitous dealings with their own people. Can they name one country that has defeated terror in 60 days?”
“How many rulers have we had in Nigeria since 1960 and how many come from the North? Why did it not occur to any of them that the Almajiris should go to school?” “The country has suffered enough of the errors of these leaders which has now produced terror in the land, they should stopping pouring salt on the injury,” Afenifere said.
Northern Elders on Jonathan
•Administration is insensitive to the plight of
Chibok girls
•Toying with corruption
•Has put politics ahead of governance
•Has closed its eyes to the Boko Haram scourge in the North
Afenifere on Northern Elders
•They are cuddling Boko Haram
•Refusing to condemn Boko Haram
•Prefer to cite alleged incompetence of Jonathan
•Not sincere about Chibok girls
