Says terrorism in Nigeria is multifaceted
– Urges govt, security agencies, community leaders to ‘do more’
From Seye Ojo

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has stated that adopting the conventional ‘war approach’ is not the way to solve the terrorism challenge currently going on in Nigeria.

The organisation, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, stated that in conventional war, the ‘enemy’ could be identified in terms of location and other signifiers. But terrorists in Nigeria, though not invincible, are not easily identifiable because they mingle with the people who would later become victims.

“As such, the approach to defeating terrorists in Nigeria requires tact, hard-track intelligence, diligence, commitment and sincerity on the part of those deployed to fight them,” Ajayi stated, adding that Afenifere issuing this second statement on the same subject within a short interval was due to the speed with which American President Donald Trump is pursuing his goal of attacking Nigeria ostensibly to come and rescue Christians who he alleged are facing extermination.

The New York Times, on Wednesday, November 5, reported that the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has drawn up plans to attack Nigeria. The plans were categorised as ‘heavy’ (Option A), ‘medium’ (Option B) and ‘light’ (Option C).

Under the heavy option, fighter jets or long-range bombers will target militant strongholds in northern Nigeria. Under the ‘medium’ option, MQ-9 Reaper and MQ-1 Predator drones, supported by U.S. intelligence will ‘conduct targeted strikes against insurgent camps, convoys, and vehicles’ in northern Nigeria.Under the ‘light’ option, US military will be sharing intelligence, provide logistics support and carry out joint operations with Nigerian armed forces against militant groups accused of mass killings, abductions and attacks on churches.

The plans were made on the directive of President Trump who had not only declared Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern (CPC)’, but vowed to rescue Christians in Nigeria who he alleged are being persecuted because of their faith.

In his words: “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening.”Nigerian government as well as some others have consistently denied the allegation of persecuting adherents of any faith, particularly Christians. But the refutations do not seem to dissuade the US government from its seeming determination to attack Nigeria to fight Boko Haram and others who are alleged to be carrying out genocide against Christians.

According to Afenifere spokesman, there is an aspect of the New York Times’ report that is alarming. The paper had reported that because of the feeling that limited air operations alone are unlikely to resolve Nigeria’s prolonged insurgency, there is the possibility of resorting to ‘a full-scale campaign – similar to those in Iraq or Afghanistan’.

“Going by the aftermath of US’ interventions in those countries (Iraq and Afghanistan), only the enemies of Nigeria would wish for a similar thing to happen to her (Nigeria).Rather than toeing that path, Afenifere prefers intelligence/information sharing, training in modern surveillance and where necessary, limited airstrikes or drones (as contained in Plan C, ‘light’ operation) to deal with this multifaceted challenge. “We believe that toeing this path with sincerity of purpose will achieve the desired objective of routing out terrorists and insurgents. We strongly believe that there is no need whatsoever to launch ‘full scale campaigns similar to those in Iraq or Afghanistan’,” the statement emphasised. It went further to state that what happened to countries where America has carried out ‘full scale campaigns’ is undesirable. Countries like Vietnam, Sudan, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya to mention just some.

Ajayi added that rather than the outright military path, better interests would be served by following the established principle of sovereignty based on strategic mutual cooperation, diplomatic engagement, genuine commitment to protecting citizens who are law-abiding regardless of the faith they profess as well as a veritable determination not only to hold terrorists and their sponsors accountable but to defeat them completely.

“The exhortation of US Congressman, Jonathan L. Jackson is pertinent here. After stating that violence against any person of faith is unacceptable, he declared that ‘The suffering of the Nigerian people – Christian and Muslim alike – deserves compassion’ and insisted that the answer to the Nigeria terrorism situation ‘is not American bombs or boots…’ The U.S. has to work with the Nigerian government to eliminate Boko Haram and any terrorism or criminal groups.”

To him, “… this sudden interest in Nigeria’s internal conflict is not about human rights or saving lives. This is the same administration that slashed humanitarian aid across Africa …. You don’t stabilize Africa with missiles – you stabilize it with schools, clean water, and opportunity” adding that the approach should be diplomacy-first; one that prioritises peacebuilding, humanitarian aid and regional partnerships rather than unilateral US intervention. The path to Nigeria must come through dialogue, development, and dignity – not domination. American should be a partner in healing, not a hammer looking for a nail”.

Afenifere called on those who are fascinated by US planned strike to think twice as bombs hardly discriminate between the guilty and the innocents, especially when they are in the same spot. What should be encouraged are intelligence gathering that would make it easier to identify desired targets and go for them directly with minimal collateral damages.

“It is undebatable that Christians and adherents of other faiths need to be protected in Nigeria. So are people who are being terrorized by those who want to take over their ancestral lands. Thus, the approach should be a total war on terrorists who prioritize resources over faith. In the same vein elders in various communities where the menace is rampant should swing more into action.”

PoliticsPolice Deny Smuggling Names Of Politicians Into Academy Admission List by Bestwt001(op): 8:19pm On Nov 11, 2025
By Kingsley Omonobi

The Force headquarters has described as barefaced lie, a report in an online medium alleging that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun smuggled some names from the National Assembly into the Police Academy admission list.A statement by the Police headquarters said 10 candidates based on merit were selected from each state and Abuja, bringing the total number to 370, noting that no state was given extra favours. The statement by Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin reads, “The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to a false, malicious, and defamatory report published by an online medium on 10 November 2025, alleging that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, ‘smuggled names’ into the Nigeria Police Academy admission list.

“This report is a barefaced lie, a product of irresponsible and unethical journalism, and a calculated attempt to mislead Nigerians and malign the reputation of the Nigeria Police Force and its leadership.

“It is both mischievous and contemptuous, crafted with the sole intent of inciting public disaffection and eroding confidence in the Police institution.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the admission process into the Nigeria Police Academy remains transparent, merit-based, and strictly guided by due process.

“For the 2025/2026 academic session, a total of 370 candidates, ten per state, were admitted solely on merit, having met all academic, physical, and character benchmarks as required by the Academy.

“While well-meaning Nigerians, leaders, or institutions may recommend candidates for consideration, as is customary in any public institution, such recommendations do not override merit, nor do they influence the selection process.

“Under the watch of IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, no name is smuggled, no slot is sold, and no standard is compromised. The Nigeria Police Force therefore dares the online medium to produce a single verifiable name from the approved list that does not meet the stipulated admission requirements.Until such evidence is produced, the report remains what it truly is, a baseless fabrication, an act of journalistic blackmail, and a grave defamation of character.

“The Force considers this pattern of targeted misinformation a direct assault on national institutions and an act capable of undermining public trust and national security.

“Spreading falsehoods against the nation’s foremost law enforcement agency is not investigative journalism; it is subversive propaganda.

“Accordingly, the online medium is hereby strongly cautioned to desist from its habitual dissemination of false and malicious reports against the Nigeria Police Force; failure of which the Force will actively consult its legal department and explore appropriate legal redress, including defamation proceedings, against the online medium and any individuals complicit in this calculated misinformation campaign. The public is advised to disregard the said publication in its entirety. It is false, mischievous, and driven purely by ill intent.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute, professional, and unwavering in its commitment to merit, transparency, and accountability.

“We reaffirm that no amount of blackmail or falsehood will distract the Nigeria Police Force from its sacred duty of protecting lives, property, and the integrity of our nation.”

PoliticsPolice Arrest 30 Suspects, Recover Stolen Vehicles, Guns In Imo by Bestwt001(op): 8:04pm On Nov 11, 2025
The Imo State Police Command has arrested no fewer than 30 suspects for offences including armed robbery, car snatching, cultism, and unlawful possession of firearms.

Police spokesperson DSP Henry Okoye disclosed this in a statement released on Tuesday in Owerri, saying the arrests were made during various operations by the command’s Quick Intervention Team and Rapid Response Squad.

Okoye said the operations led to the recovery of three stolen vehicles, arms, and ammunition from the suspects.

According to him, “on November 7, 2025, at about 7 pm, armed hoodlums snatched a Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 with registration number ABC-10CG from one Chukwuebuka and his friends at Ikenegbu by Holy Family Catholic Hospital, Owerri.

“Following a distress call, QIT operatives tracked the vehicle towards Okigwe Road and recovered it at about 10:30 pm. One suspect, Adamu Sani of Kachia LGA, Kaduna State, was arrested. He confessed to the crime and named Abdullahi, Emmanuel, and Emeka as his accomplices.”

He added that around 3 am on November 8, operatives recovered a black Toyota Hilux with registration number NEM-14AG, reportedly stolen from a hotel in Rivers State. The vehicle, he said, was abandoned at New Owerri by De Angels around 5 am.

Okoye also confirmed that on the same day, a Toyota Venza earlier snatched by three armed men at New Owerri by De Compound on November 7 was recovered abandoned at Yar’Adua Drive by Chosen Church around 5:30 pm.All the recovered vehicles have been identified by their owners, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects,” he stated.

In a related development, the command said operatives of the RRS on stop-and-search duty along the Owerri/Aba Road intercepted two young men in a commercial bus heading to Owerri around 8:30 am on November 2.

A search conducted on them, Okoye said, led to the recovery of a cut-to-size locally fabricated double-barrel gun with three live cartridges.

“The suspects, identified as Uchechukwu Ahamefule, 25, and Miracle Eberechi, 28, both of Ogbu Umuorji, Osisioma, Abia State, confessed to being members of the Vikings/Bagar confraternity cult group. They claimed to have seized the firearm from a rival group in Aba for their protection,” he added.

He said investigations were ongoing to arrest other members of their syndicate.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, assured residents of sustained efforts to rid the state of criminal elements, urging the public to remain law-abiding and share useful information to assist security operations.

PoliticsOlubadan Seeks Unity In Terror Fight, Warns Against Foreign Interference by Bestwt001(op): 9:35am On Nov 10, 2025
over the weekend urged Nigerians to unite in confronting terrorism and extremism, emphasizing that the nation must collectively end the scourge and heal divisions caused by years of insecurity.

Oba Ladoja made the call at his palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan, while receiving the President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Francis Wale Oke.

The monarch lamented that Nigeria has been grappling with terrorism for over a decade, since the twilight of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration in 2014, resulting in massive loss of lives, destruction of property, and widespread displacement.

“Many people have been killed, and property worth inestimable amounts destroyed. Families, especially women and children, have been displaced, and kidnappings have become rampant. Successive administrations—from Jonathan to Buhari, and now Tinubu—have spent trillions to fight insecurity. But terrorists do not distinguish between Muslims and Christians; they see everyone as prey,” the Olubadan said.

Oba Ladoja appealed to Bishop Oke, as leader of the PFN, to continue encouraging Christians to remain steadfast and peaceful despite prevailing challenges. We appeal to you to help us placate our Christian brethren, who are understandably aggrieved. These difficult times will pass,” he added.

The monarch highlighted that the South-West enjoys a history of peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths and urged other regions to emulate such tolerance and mutual respect. While acknowledging global concern about Nigeria’s security situation, Oba Ladoja cautioned against any foreign interference in the nation’s internal security matters, stressing that external involvement should only occur through collaboration and mutual respect.

Earlier, Bishop Wale Oke congratulated Oba Ladoja on his emergence as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, praying for divine wisdom, knowledge, and understanding to guide him in fulfilling his duties to both God and humanity.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has asked United States President Donald Trump to withdraw his recent comment describing Nigeria as a “disgraced country,” warning that such language could inflame tensions and undermine national stability. The demand followed an Expanded General Purpose Committee (EGPC) meeting chaired by the NSCIA President-General, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, held on Sunday at the National Mosque, Abuja.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, NSCIA Secretary-General, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, said the Council was alarmed that some “Islamophobic and unpatriotic Nigerians” had misled foreign governments with claims suggesting Nigeria was experiencing a genocide against Christians.

Oloyede stressed that Nigeria’s insecurity affects citizens across religious and ethnic lines, noting that both Muslims and Christians continue to be victims of terrorism, banditry, communal clashes, and criminality driven by climate stress, failed governance, and the proliferation of arms.

PoliticsInflation, Rising Production Costs Threaten Industrial Stability — CANMPEF by Bestwt001(op): 9:11am On Nov 10, 2025
The Chemical and Non-Metallic Products Employers Federation, CANMPEF, has warned that rising production costs, multiple taxation, and foreign exchange volatility continue to threaten Nigeria’s industrial stability, even as manufacturers show resilience and innovation in adapting to the nation’s harsh economic realities.Presenting the President’s Report at the Federation’s 46th Annual General Meeting, AGM, in Lagos, the President of CANMPEF, Chief Devakumar Edwin, said despite daunting macroeconomic challenges, the sector recorded modest growth in 2024, driven by local resource utilisation, product diversification, and expanding regional export opportunities. He said the Federation’s outlook for 2025 would focus on a new industrial agenda anchored on aggressive advocacy for infrastructure development, local value chain strengthening, and enhanced regulatory engagement to support long-term growth.

According to Edwin, Nigeria’s economy demonstrated resilience in 2024, expanding by 3.84 per cent in the fourth quarter to reach N22.61 trillion, with growth driven largely by the non-oil sector, especially financial and insurance services. However, inflationary pressures and currency depreciation continued to undermine industrial competitiveness.

He said “The business environment remained constrained by high input costs, multiple taxation, and limited access to foreign exchange. Despite these headwinds, CANMPEF members showed remarkable adaptability — optimising resource use, innovating around local material sourcing, and exploring regional markets.”

He noted that the removal of fuel subsidy and floating of the Naira, though designed to stabilise the economy, significantly escalated energy and import costs, squeezing margins across industries.

Citing the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) Q4 2024 Economic Report, Edwin said the manufacturing sub-sector grew modestly by 1.79 per cent year-on-year, driven by product diversification and increased local sourcing, even as average capacity utilisation rose to 61.9 per cent.

He noted that the exchange rate, which averaged N1,623.26 to a dollar, reflected a 2.13 per cent depreciation, while headline inflation climbed to 34.8 per cent, driven by high energy costs and exchange rate volatility.https://www.vanguardngr.com/2025/11/inflation-rising-production-costs-threaten-industrial-stability-canmpef/

PoliticsPrivate Sector Operators Differ On 15% Tax On Fuel Imports by Bestwt001(op): 8:19am On Nov 10, 2025
At the backdrop of the Federal Government’s decision to impose a 15 percent tax on imported petrol and diesel to protect local refineries, private sector operators have expressed divergent views on the implications of the policy on the economy in the short-term.

Although they all agreed on the potential long-term benefit of the policy, the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) have called for immediate implementation, while the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) and Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria (ASBON) are seeking a more cautious approach noting that the current inadequate local capacity could create supply gaps leading to hike in prices with the attendant inflationary pressures.

Director General of MAN, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, said the move is a strategic step and patriotic policy that aligns with the ‘Nigeria First’ agenda and MAN’s long-standing advocacy for local content development and patronage of Made-in-Nigeria.

“This is a sure step in the promotion of local value addition, strengthening domestic refining capacity, conserving foreign exchange, and advancing Nigeria’s long-term industrialisation objectives.

“MAN recognises the importance, significance, and necessity of the approval of the 15% import tariff on petroleum products – petrol and diesel; and acknowledges that the tariff is a rightful, deliberately designed policy instrument intended to protect and encourage domestic producers, curb dumping, and create a stable environment for local refiners to thrive.”

Ajayi-Kadir however noted that while supporting the 15% tariff imposition, MAN expects transparent, efficient, and well-coordinated implementation to ensure its benefits reach both industry and consumers, safeguard competitiveness, and prevent unintended cost burdens. In a similar vein, NECA’s Director General, Wale Oyerinde, said the measure will help protect and revive local production.

“If the 15% tariff is the ‘punishment’ we must bear collectively for our recklessness in allowing our four refineries to collapse, then so be it.Even developed nations like the U.S. are introducing protectionist policies to protect their local industries. We don’t have much excuse not to do the same,” he said on a television programme.According to Oyerinde, the model should be extended beyond petroleum products to other sectors where Nigeria has the capacity to produce locally.

“To ramp up production in the manufacturing and real sectors, this kind of policy should extend there too. Why do we import things we can produce locally? We have said that everything we can produce locally should attract import duties, provided we have made sufficient arrangements for local production to meet our needs,” he added.

Taking a different view, Director General of LCCI, Dr. Chinyere Almona, called for the postponement of the implementation of the tax policy. She stated: “Nigeria is already experiencing cost-of-living pressures, supply-chain, and inflation challenges. The business community will be sensitive to further cost shocks. Increased fuel costs affect transportation, supply chains, agriculture, logistics, and manufacturing – this, in turn, disproportionately impacts SMEs and trading firms.

“A premature restriction on imports, without sufficient domestic production, could lead to supply shortages, higher pump prices, and inflationary pressures across critical sectors. We recommend that the implementation of this tax policy be postponed.”On his part, President of ASBON, Dr Femi Egbesola, said the policy could result to higher operating costs for small businesses reduced profit margins in the short run.

His words: “The Federal Government’s decision to impose a 15% tax on fuel imports is a strategic move to protect and encourage local refineries like Dangote Refinery, reduce reliance on imported petroleum products, and conserve foreign exchange. In the long run, this could strengthen Nigeria’s energy security, stimulate investment in domestic refining, and create jobs across the value chain.

“However, in the short term, this policy is likely to increase the landing cost of fuel and push pump prices upward, since local refining capacity is not yet sufficient to meet national demand.

“For small businesses that rely heavily on fuel for transportation and power, this could mean higher operating costs and reduced profit margins. The government should therefore implement the tax gradually and ensure local refineries operate efficiently while providing temporary relief or support measures for small enterprises to cushion the immediate impact.”

PoliticsNavy Rescues 10 Crew Members From Distressed Vessel by Bestwt001(op): 8:08am On Nov 10, 2025
The Nigerian Navy has rescued 10 crew members from a distressed vessel, MV SEMA III, which was en route to Calabar from Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

This is contained in a statement by the Director of Naval Information, Commodore Ayiwuyor Adams-Aliu, on Monday in Abuja.

Adams-Aliu said that the Navy had proven its swift response capability and dedication to saving lives at sea.

He said the operation was carried out by personnel of Forward Operating Base IBAKA on Friday.

“Acting on a distress call received around 2000 hours, a naval gunboat equipped with a submersible pump was immediately deployed. On arrival, the team discovered the vessel taking in water and promptly evacuated all occupants, comprising one Cameroonian, one Equatorial Guinean and eight Nigerians, who were later received, debriefed, and catered for at FOB IBAKA until Saturday.

“The Master of MV SEMA III expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Nigerian Navy for its timely intervention and exceptional professionalism,” he said.Adams-Aliu said the successful rescue operation underscores the Nigerian navy’s renewed efforts to ensure maritime safety, protection of critical national assets, and promotion of lawful economic activities within Nigeria’s maritime domain.

PUNCH Online reports that, in a related development, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, recently approved the appointment and redeployment of 65 Rear Admirals across various commands, institutions, and departments within the Nigerian Navy and the Armed Forces.

PoliticsW/cup Playoffs: Super Eagles Camp Opens In Rabat With 10 Early Arrivals by Bestwt001(op): 8:02am On Nov 10, 2025
The Super Eagles’ camp officially opened on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco, with the arrival of 10 players, as Nigeria begin final preparations for their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup CAF playoffs.

The first batch of players and team officials arrived at the Rive Hotel, Rabat, on Sunday afternoon, signalling the start of what could be a decisive week in Nigeria’s campaign to return to the world’s biggest football stage.

The team’s media officer, Promise Efoghe, told the News Agency of Nigeria that early arrivals included the trio of Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze, as well as Tolu Arokodare and Olakunle Olusegun.

“Later on Sunday, three more players – Wilfred Ndidi, Moses Simon, and William Troost-Ekong—joined up with the squad, bringing the number of players in camp to eight.

“By nightfall, Benjamin Fredericks and Chidozie Awaziem also checked in, raising the total number of players in camp to 10 as preparations gathered pace,” he said.

NAN also reports that coach Eric Chelle on Saturday finalised his 24-man squad for the playoffs as he named a strong roster of Europe-based stars and local standouts for the decisive fixtures in Rabat.

The Super Eagles face Gabon in the first playoff match on Thursday. A win would send them into the African playoff final against either Cameroon or the Democratic Republic of Congo on November 16, also in the Moroccan capital. The playoff round provides African teams with an additional route to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, the winner of this series must still overcome opponents from other continents in a final intercontinental playoff scheduled for March 2026 in Mexico.

Chelle’s squad features several changes from last month’s qualifiers, where Nigeria recorded victories over Lesotho and Benin to climb to second place behind South Africa in their qualifying group. The crucial victories earned the Super Eagles a playoff slot as one of the four best runners-up across the nine African groups.

Among the returnees is Maduka Okoye of Udinese, back to provide competition in goal, while Awaziem also returns in defence.

Midfielder Raphael Onyedika and forward Chidera have been recalled to add depth and creativity.

Players omitted from last month’s roster include Felix Agu, Terem Moffi, and Christantus Uche.

Nigeria, the highest-ranked of the four teams in this playoff round, are widely seen as the favourite to progress — but coach Chelle has cautioned against complacency, stressing the need for discipline and tactical precision.
