The Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill: This Bill proposes creating a Joint Revenue Board to replace the Joint Tax Board, covering federal and all state tax authorities. The fourth bill will also establish the Office of Tax Ombudsman under the Joint Revenue Board, protecting taxpayers’ interests and facilitating dispute resolution. US rapper Young Thug was released from jail Thursday night after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including gang, drug, and gun offences. His release concludes what has been the longest criminal trial in Georgia’s history, the BBC reports. The 33-year-old Grammy winner, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, had been held for over 900 days following his arrest in May 2022 on racketeering and gang-related charges. Prosecutors initially alleged that his record label, Young Stoner Life Records, served as a front for an organised crime group connected to violent crime in Atlanta. In a hearing Thursday, Williams was sentenced to time served and 15 years of probation, with jail records confirming his release that evening. “I take full responsibility for my crimes, for my charges. “To really everybody that has got something to do with this situation, I want to say sorry,” Williams said in court. He expressed regret, describing himself as a “good guy with a good heart” who fell into trouble due to his nature of being “nice or cool.” He acknowledged, “And I understand that you can’t be that way when you reach a certain height because it could end bad… and it could fall on you.” Though prosecutors initially suggested a 45-year sentence, the final decision by Superior Court Judge Paige Whitaker commuted his sentence to the time he had served. “I want you to try to be more of the solution and less of the problem,” Judge Whitaker advised him. As part of the plea agreement, Williams pleaded guilty to one gang charge, three drug charges, and two gun charges. He also entered a no-contest plea to leading a gang and violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, accepting punishment without disputing those charges. Additional terms of his probation include 100 hours of community service, restrictions on gang contact, and a ban from staying in the Atlanta area for the first decade of his probation, with exceptions for family events and anti-gang presentations. The lengthy trial saw numerous delays and disruptions. Young Thug, known to fans as “Thugger,” and 27 associates at YSL Records were accused of crimes under the RICO Act. Prosecutors argued YSL was shorthand for “Young Slime Life,” an alleged criminal gang linked to violent crimes including murder, robbery, and carjacking in Atlanta. The use of rap lyrics in the indictment sparked backlash, with critics asserting that the prosecution’s case infringed on artistic freedom and was unfairly targeting a Black-dominated genre. Multiple co-defendants took plea deals or had cases separated, with jury selection taking nearly 10 months starting January 2023. In July, the trial was paused after Williams’s lawyers claimed misconduct by Judge Ural Glanville, alleging he pressured a witness to testify. During the trial, a series of unusual events unfolded, including the arrest of a deputy accused of smuggling contraband to a defendant and a security breach in which someone yelled “Free Thug!” on the court’s Zoom call. MTN Nigeria recorded a loss after tax of N514.9 billion for the first nine months of 2024, primarily attributed to naira depreciation, which increased foreign currency-denominated obligations. In his comments on the results, MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola noted that had it not been for the forex revaluation losses, the company’s profit after tax (PAT) would have been N118.5 billion, down 59.2% year-on-year Subscriber and revenue insights During the period, MTN Nigeria’s total subscriber base saw a slight decline of 0.9% to 77.0 million, primarily influenced by compliance with NIN-SIM regulations. In contrast, active data users increased by 5.1% to 45.3 million, while active mobile money (MoMo) wallets declined by 21.8% to 2.8 million. The telecom giant reported a robust increase in service revenue, up 33.6% to N2.4 trillion, demonstrating continued demand for its core services despite the challenging macroeconomic environment. The company’s recent renegotiation of its tower lease contracts with IHS Towers yielded savings in operating expenses, which positively impacted its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) margin by 2.3 percentage points. However, EBITDA declined by 5.3% year-on-year to N860.2 billion, with the EBITDA margin decreasing by 14.9 percentage points to 36.3%. Financial highlights Total subscribers declined by 0.9% to 77.0 million, while active data users rose by 5.1% to 45.3 million. Service revenue increased by 33.6% to N2.4 trillion. Negative Earnings Per Share (EPS) of N24.51 kobo; adjusted for forex loss, EPS would have been N5.65 kobo, down 59.2%. CEO’s comments Commenting on the results, Toriola, said despite forex challenges, MTN Nigeria’s positive free cash flow, supported by favourable working capital movements and reduced capital expenditure, underscores its resilience in navigating the current economic landscape. “As we manage the effects of the ongoing macroeconomic headwinds on our business, we remain focused on initiatives to accelerate our earnings recovery profile, strengthen our balance sheet, and restore our net asset position faster,” he said. In a voice message on Monday, October 28, the country's minister for the promotion of virtue and prevention of vice announced the bizarre new restriction on women's behaviour. Although precise details of the Taliban's ruling are unclear, Afghan human rights activists have warned it could mean women are effectively banned from holding conversations with one another. In his message, minister Khalid Hanafi said: "Even when an adult female prays and another female passes by, she must not pray loudly enough for them to hear." "How could they be allowed to sing if they aren't even permitted to hear [each other's] voices while praying, let alone for anything else." He said these are "new rules and will be gradually implemented, and God will be helping us in each step we take". As the Taliban has banned living beings from being shown on television, his message was delivered via voice recording instead of a television broadcast. "How are women who are the sole providers for their families supposed to buy bread, seek medical care or simply exist if even their voices are forbidden?" one activist said in response. "Whatever he says is a form of mental torture for us," an Afghan woman in Kabul told The Telegraph. "Living in Afghanistan is incredibly painful for us as women. Afghanistan is forgotten, and that's why they are suppressing us - they are torturing us on a daily basis."
