HealthRe: First Aid: Tips For Common Accidents And Emergencies by bides: 12:17pm On Jun 07, 2015
A GOOD DAY TO BE ALIVE : First Aid

A good day to be alive!
When a Cardiac arrest survivor was asked how he was feeling? He replied “it’s a good day to be alive”. Another Cardiac arrest survivor Mr. Hicks, while giving a speech to thank the team that saved him said “Every day is a blessing. It can end in a heartbeat.”(American Red Cross stories, 2013). Anyone who has had a near death experience will feel that way. Life is good! Trust me, life is precious. We all want to be healthy, we all want to be strong and we all want to be alive.

Normal days and events we can’t predict
Our days can be very normal, blessed with routines and we could almost predict what happens next. For instance, you could tell who is coming to dinner; you could predict the weather for the next day but you cannot tell the next healthy friend or family who will suddenly fall ill or die. It can be heart wrenching to watch friends, colleagues and family pass-on in your arms without being able to help.

Could you have done something to save a life?
This is a one billion dollar question! Can you do something to help a dying person? Without any form of medical training or skill can you act and save a life? I know you’d be tempted to say “All I have to do is rush down to the hospital” What if the hospital is far and you get stuck in traffic? You need to do something NOW and you need to act FAST! Just take a look at yourself now and be honest. Is there something you can really dohuh

OH YES! There is something!!
Ever heard about persons who were not nurses, doctors or paramedics saving another person’s life? Oh yea! Real life stories about real people being saved by the skills of others. All over the world people saving people outside hospital settings. In a village with no clinic, a villager revived a drowned little boy with the skill he learnt.

That something you can do is called FIRST AID!
Oh yea! FIRST AID!!! When there is no doctor, no E.R, no Ambulance what you need to start doing before help arrives is first aid. It has made the difference between Life and Death in a lot of cases. First Aid sounds simple and trivial to an average Nigerian but it is the lack of it that accounts for poor outcomes in some accidents and illness and death in some others. Dramatic numbers of Nigerians are dying for lack of First Aid. It is a vital skill every Adult must have.

FIRST AID skills come with benefits
Apart from helping you to save life and helping others get better, First aid skill also comes with benefits.
First aid will give you an edge over others during recruitment. It is a legal requirement for some employers to have trained first aiders so with your primary qualification; your first aid training may give your employer the reason to pick you from the crowd.

Everyone needs to learn First Aid
I have heard doctors and Nurses argue to be custodian of skills far more superior to first aid. However, I have seen Nigerian healthcare providers find it difficult to give care outside their professional environment without their regular gadgets.
First Aid is simple, it saves lives and anyone can learn it. Based on international standard, I think it’s safe to say that all Offices in Nigeria should have at least one appointed first aider. All household should have at least one person trained in First Aid CPR. First Aid is not only Red Cross thing.

Where can I learn First Aid?
There are many centres in Nigeria where you can learn First Aid. You can take advantage of Logroplus Consulting First Aid trainings.

Contact info@logroplusconsulting.org. For those in Port Harcourt, there is a FREE training session on the 11th of June, 2015. More information on http://www.logroplusconsulting.org/training-schedules-12.html
