What a people, what a shame!

So for the Nordic countries, going Cashless or Digital isn't because it is cliche or in vogue. Its designed to solve a fundamental problem which appears to be cultural and societal.

The failure of a society rests on its inability to study, understand the shortcomings of diverse culture and accepted norms of the people who make up the system..... and make bidding laws to protect everyone.

Let me share a little bit of a research I did for a client.

On one side of the capital, Finnish President Alexander Stubb made a highly publicized appearance at Prince Daniel's Fellowship Entrepreneurship Day and Nordic Tech Week 2026. Amid ongoing global anxiety regarding Russian aggression, Stubb's presence served as a visible reminder that Nordic bilateral cooperation, tech innovation, and economic resilience are moving forward full steam—the threat landscape hasn't wound down, but the Nordics are actively adapting rather than retreating.

Yet on that exact same Monday, an entirely different kind of state machinery was turning quiet gears at the Svea Court of Appeal (Svea hovrätt). The appellate court officially registered an "Ö nummer" (procedural case number), formalizing an appeal against AKT 66 on the basis that, the process had previously been allegedly muddled by preparatory staff of the Stockholm District Court (Department 1).

What makes this routine administrative docketing read like a legal thriller is the high-stakes backdrop:

A complex civil claim filed against the Swedish business operations (St1 Refinery AB and St1 Sverige AB) belonging to top Finnish energy billionaire Mika Anttonen.

Active scrutiny by the Parliamentary Ombudsmen (JO) into the handling of the case file by preparatory staff at Stockholm District Court.

This may be the Ultimate Litmus Test for the well-known Swedish Judicial Independence!

For outside observers, the perfect alignment of a Finnish Head of State arriving in town just as an appeal targeting a massive Finnish corporate empire is resurrected might look ripe for a geopolitical conspiracy theory. In Sweden, the strict separation of powers means that judicial clerks, court dockets, and independent ombudsmen operate or should operate completely blind to the diplomatic itineraries of visiting dignitaries or assumed back door pressure. The Svea Court’s decision to correct a lower court's procedural misstep, entirely unswayed by the immense wealth of the defendant or the sensitive nature of international cables, will stand as a testament to institutional resilience.

Two case studies. Two conflict theatres. One uncomfortable question: Are African conflicts treated by the Nordic system in the same way as conflicts elsewhere?

Sweden has built a remarkable international reputation around dialogue, mediation, peace-building, transparency and the creation of space for difficult conversations.

The country’s diplomatic history gives this reputation considerable substance.

Sweden has repeatedly supported preventive diplomacy, inclusive mediation and informal dialogue. Its own foreign-policy statements have emphasized that mediation works best when it creates space for dialogue between actors who may not otherwise be able or willing to communicate. Sweden has also played a role in facilitating peace processes, including the 2018 Stockholm consultations on Yemen.

That history is precisely why I became curious.

What happens when we compare the treatment of actors connected to conflicts in the Middle East with the treatment of actors connected to conflicts in Africa?

So I started digging. Not through rumours. Not through social-media commentary. Not through classified material.

Through publicly accessible information.

Sweden is, in many respects, a transparency haven. And that is wonderful.

Because if you know where to look, what to look for and how to connect the dots, public records can reveal extraordinary amounts of information-- Government statements. Parliamentary records. Funding decisions. Press releases. Institutional partnerships. Public appointments. Court records. Organisational registrations. Diplomatic engagements. Public events.Policy documents. Actors. Networks. And the language used to describe them - Emmanuel Ogbuanu
You can begin to reconstruct not merely what governments say, but how institutions actually behave.

And this is where my comparative study became uncomfortable.

The comparison
I examined two broad conflict environments:

Case Study I — Middle East
Sweden has maintained substantial diplomatic, humanitarian and political engagement around conflicts in the Middle East.

The Swedish Government’s current foreign-policy position, for example, explicitly discusses diplomatic engagement, humanitarian assistance, negotiations, sanctions, international law and political solutions in relation to Gaza, Israel/Palestine, Iran and other regional crises. Sweden also maintains a regional development-cooperation strategy covering the Middle East and North Africa, worth approximately SEK 2.3 billion for 2024–2027.

Case Study II — Africa
Africa receives significant Swedish humanitarian, development and peacebuilding support too. Sweden has publicly emphasized African-led mediation and the importance of dialogue, prevention and regional institutions. In 2026, Sweden chaired the International Contact Group for the Great Lakes and participated alongside African Union and regional mediation actors, explicitly stating that there can be no military solution to the conflict.

So this isn’t an argument that Sweden does nothing for Africa.

Quite the opposite. The question is more subtle:

Are comparable actors and political causes given comparable institutional space, diplomatic access, language, tolerance and procedural treatment?

That is where the comparison becomes interesting.

The treatment of controversial actors
One of the patterns that caught my attention concerns how controversial political actors are categorized and treated.

In some Middle Eastern contexts, actors associated with deeply controversial political positions can nevertheless become interlocutors within extensive diplomatic, humanitarian, academic, mediation or policy ecosystems.

That does not mean Sweden endorses them.

It means that contact, dialogue and engagement remain possible despite controversy.

But when we examine some African conflicts, the institutional environment can look markedly different.

Actors may be moved much more quickly from the category of:

“political actor”

into:

“security problem,” “extremist,” “criminal actor,” or “law-enforcement matter.”

And once that categorization occurs, the available space for dialogue changes dramatically. That is the issue I want to interrogate.

Not whether every actor deserves legitimacy.

Not whether every organization should be invited into a negotiation.

But whether the threshold for dialogue, engagement and political recognition is applied consistently.

Because if the standard changes depending upon geography, identity or geopolitical interest, we have a problem.

Justice cannot be selectively blind
We often hear:

“The law is blind.”

But blindness is only meaningful if it is accompanied by consistency.

If similar conduct produces radically different institutional responses depending on who the actor is, where the conflict occurs, or which geopolitical interests are involved, then we should at least be willing to ask questions.

I am not making a criminal-liability determination about any individual or organization in this post. That is not the purpose of the research. The purpose is to examine institutional patterns.

Who gets access?

Who gets heard?

Who gets funded?

Who gets invited?

Who gets classified as a legitimate interlocutor?

Who gets treated as a security threat?

Who receives diplomatic engagement?

Who receives humanitarian engagement?

Who is given space for political dialogue?

And who finds the door closed before the conversation even begins? And why?

And then there is the question of “values”
This is where historical comparisons become uncomfortable.

Take Finland.

Finland’s wartime relationship with Nazi Germany is a complicated historical subject and infact Finland was simply “a Nazi ally” in the 1930s. Finland’s military cooperation with Germany developed during the Second World War, particularly around the 1940–41 period, and Finland subsequently fought the Soviet Union alongside Germany during the Continuation War.

Finland’s blue swastika had been adopted as a Finnish national symbol before Nazi Germany rose to power and had a distinct Finnish origin, we understand this. However is a deeper-than understood connection between Nazism and this selective response? The Finnish Air Force subsequently phased out the symbol in 2020.

Why mention this?

Because history teaches us that symbols, alliances and political relationships cannot always be understood through simplistic moral categories.

States act according to circumstances.

Interests.

Security.

Geography.

Power.

And strategic necessity.

That is precisely why I am uncomfortable when contemporary foreign policy is explained simply through the language of “love,” “values” or “human rights.”

International relations are more complicated than that.

Interests matter.

Strategic interests matter enormously.

The Swedish transparency paradox
And here is the fascinating part. Sweden’s transparency makes this kind of comparative research possible. You don’t necessarily need privileged access. You need methodological discipline. You follow the documents. You compare statements. You trace funding. You map actors. You examine institutional relationships. You compare language. You identify omissions. You establish chronology.

And eventually, patterns begin to emerge.

That is the real power of open-source intelligence and documentary research.

The archive talks. You just need to know how to listen.

Today, we took the next step.
Bigkoko, today submitted a Voluntary Transparency Notification to the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs (UD) and the Swedish secret police Sakerhetspolisen (Sapo) , in our assessment, potentially raises questions relevant to geopolitical developments in Africa.

We are putting this on record because our position is simple:

Africans deserve equal measures.
If dialogue is considered useful in one conflict environment, dialogue should not automatically become suspicious when Africans demand it.

If humanitarian concerns justify engagement in one region, humanitarian concerns should not become politically inconvenient in another.

If political actors can be studied, heard, consulted and engaged despite controversy in one theatre, then the threshold for doing so elsewhere deserves scrutiny.

This does not mean excusing violence. It does not mean legitimizing crimes. It does not mean abandoning international law.

Quite the opposite.

It means applying international law, due process and institutional standards consistently.

Sweden itself has repeatedly emphasized the importance of international law, preventive diplomacy, inclusive dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution.

So the question is not whether Sweden should abandon its values. The question is whether those values are being applied consistently across geopolitical theatres.

My question to Sweden is therefore straightforward:
Can we have one standard for the Middle East and another for Africa?

Can an actor be controversial but still considered a potential interlocutor in one conflict, while a comparable African actor is immediately reduced to a security or criminal-law question?

Can peace-building mean dialogue in one theatre and containment in another?

Can self-determination, human rights and civilian protection be universal principles while their practical application remains geographically selective?

I don’t think we should be afraid of asking these questions.

Because transparency is not dangerous.

Selective transparency is.

And justice is not justice because we call it justice.

Justice becomes credible when it is blind to identity, geography and political convenience—and free from improper interests.

What is good for the crisis in the Middle East should be good enough to consider for the crisis in Africa.
Justice must be blind. Dialogue must be possible. Standards must be consistent.

And above all:

Africa deserves equal measures.
