Nigerian message to the globe on nuclear weapons
By Abdulrazaq O Hamzat

Countries are struggling to acquire nuclear capabilities to guarantee their independence and security, but no one has been able to show clear evidence of how nuclear weapon protects, whereas, we have evidences of how the weapon against humanity destroys.
While such destruction took place more than 70 years ago, precisely in August 1945, Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which suffers from the cruelty of human indiscretion are yet to recover from the impact of the grave tragedy. Without evidence of any goodness nuclear weapon has done the world, how do one makes meaning from the escalating tension between U.S and North Korea, over the latter’s nuclear program?

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un are made up of the same specie. Hot headed, aggressive, and violent. Meanwhile, one represents USA and the other North Korea, but in character, it appeared they are born by the same womb of bombardment.

From the look of things from these two men now described as'' Rocket Man and the Giant Goliat'', it seems they are set for show down. If US insist on North Korea dismantling its nuclear weapon, Kim Jong will no doubt resist that by all means possible, as contained in his personal response to Trump’s speech at the United Nations Security Council.

In my views as a peace professional, it is a settled case that the world will have to live with a nuclear North Korea, at least for now. I doubt if there is any amount of diplomatic efforts that may persuade Jong to discard the weapon against humanity, especially when they are witness to what happened in Libya and Iraq.

Some analyst have argued that, the attitude of Trump, especially at a global platform like the UN security council, where he threatened to destroy North Korea provide more justification for Kim Jung to keep its nuclear weapon. I am forced to agree with this view.
However, Simon Abah in a publication on Punch newspaper argued that, a nuclear-armed North Korea wouldn’t only be dangerous for regional stability(Korean Peninsula) and United States, but to the entire world. According to him, North Korea is not a democratic country. Democratic countries hardly go to war with another democratic country without parliamentary approval. Here, meaning Jong is a leader with a poor human rights record in the habit of killing his own people with ballistic missiles and getting a heck out of it. Can a US president ever authorize the use of a nuclear weapon unilaterally? But the North Korean can he argued.

While the above point is very valid, it is important to note that, 8 countries already have nuclear war heads and not all of them practice democracy as it should be practiced. U.S has it. Russia also does. The same with China, UK and France. Even India and Pakistan also have nuclear weapons, and many suspects that Israel also do have it, though it wasn't announced.

If all these countries can have nuclear weapons and keep it despite its destructive capability, can we morally justify the condemnation of those countries who aspire to have it too?

It has been proven over and over again that Mr Trump is rash and unpredictable, this is a quality he his proud to carry and in my view, the only thing that can restrain him a bit is the consciousness that his North Korean counterpart, who is as rash and unpredictable as him may also have mutual destructive power. Anything outside that may prove fatal for Jong, hence his country’s determination to hold unto their nuclear weapon, which they had invested billions of dollars into building over the years.

The real questions we should be asking is that, why should any democratic nations have such deadly weapon if they don't want others to have it? If the weapon is so destructive, that they fear it could be misused, why do they keep theirs? Isn’t it only proper that all countries with nuclear weapon destroy it? Until the world is nuclear free, diplomacy may not prevent others from acquiring it.

As it stands today, we are unsure what may happen next, but the tension is really rising and the possibility of a nuclear war has never been this close. All thanks to Trump UN speech which threatens to destroy North Korea and sanction Iran, coupled with his numerous inciting tweets.

No wonder many tends to agree with Zimbabwe President, Robert Mugabe who advise Mr. Trump to please blow his trumpet in a musical way towards the values of peace, unity, co-operation, togetherness, dialogue which UN have always stood for and which we read in UN very sacred document — the charter of the United Nations.

The undiplomatic attitude of Mr rump really calls for concern. Stephen Collinson had written in a publication titled Donald Trump’s undiplomatic diplomacy that President Donald Trump is quickly becoming the world's most undiplomatic -- and unpredictable – diplomat. That’s not far from the truth. The publication followed Trump’s tweet, which described the efforts of his Secretary of State, Mr. Rex Tillerson of opening lines of communication with North Korea as a waste of time, and seeming to rule out a diplomatic resolution to the nuclear-edged confrontation with Pyongyang. “I told Rex Tillerson, our wonderful Secretary of State, that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man,” on Twitter, using the derogatory nickname he has assigned to, the North Korean leader. “Save your energy Rex,”, “we’ll do what has to be done!” Stephen said.

While it is true that negotiations with North Korea have long proved frustrating to American leaders. Mr. Bush and President Clinton both tried talks and granted concessions while ultimately failing to prevent North Korea from developing nuclear weapons, something that Trump described as a failure he doesn’t intend to repeat. However, the outcome with previous US presidents is not unexpected since American itself has the weapon it is attempting to prevent others from having. US leaders lack moral justification to persuade others from pursuing nuclear.

Meanwhile, Nigeria has taken the bold step to ensure African is nuclear free. The giant of Africa pledged Africa’s support to the non-proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction mass (WMD), saying a world free of nuclear weapons is the ideal society it envisaged.

Prof. Tijani Bande, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered this position on behalf of the African Group at the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly General debate on disarmament and international security. The Nigerian envoy said: “The continued existence and possession of nuclear weapons do not guarantee security but an affirmation of the risks of their potential use. “Our world, including the outer space, must be free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. “It is in this context that the African Group stresses the need for the nuclear weapons States to cease their further modernization, upgrading, refurbishment, or extending the lives of their nuclear weapons and related facilities”.He concluded that the time has come for the world to speak with unanimity towards ensuring a world free of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction.

In view of this, I make bold to say that the world must learn from Nigeria and Africa, in its quest for global peace and security. A world seeking peace and security cannot keep nuclear weapon. Nations across the globe must understand that, nuclear weapon does not protect anyone, it destroys everyone. Therefore, i hope that reason and diplomacy prevail to avert the catastrophe that may likely unfold from further escalation of the current crisis.

Why young people like *Mathias Baba Tsado* important for Nigeria’s future?

We all knew how developed nations were able to be where they are because fresh and bright brains are in charge of the country’s affairs.

Why can't we emulate that in Nigeria? So that Nigeria will be among the league of top countries in the world.

A country with youth making up to the 60% of the population, they should actually have a say in the way their society is being governed, in how their resources are being used.

That is why we supported the successful campaign of
*#NotTooYoungToRun* a local campaign that aims to increase the number of young people running for office.

If not now, when will Nigerian youth wake up?

I met Mathias Tsado few months ago, i was surprised when he told me he is contesting for President 2019, I asked my self has Nigerian youth started thinking of taking what belongs to them? He made two statements that I always think of, I quote: 1. *I know it will shock you but I am serious because things are not working the way they should be in this country*, 2. *We should not continue to allow same people that have been leading this country for the past 40 years to continue leading us to the wrong destination*.

I am now satisfied and supporting *#HOPE2019*.

Because young and competence people like *mathias* should be given the opportunity to contribute to the development of their country through political participation that grants them access to structures of governance where decisions are taken.

His confidence to even come out to contest will tells you that he has a vision which if given the opportunity, he will surely produce result.

I am using this opportunity to call on my colleagues Comrades, My brothers and sisters, It's time for a new Nigeria, a Nigeria that will focus for the development and unity of the people, the so called religious and ethnic consideration should not deceive us, let's support youth who knows our problem and will listen to our voice.

From my personal findings, I am sure if mathias Baba Tsado will be recognize as a midwife for Nigeria, He will deliver Nigeria to the promise land.

I so submit.

FPP protect pregnant victim of domestic violence

It was on Sunday, 1st October 2017 in the afternoon that a married woman named Saratu Abubakar reported her husband, Abubakar Muhammad to the Vice Chairman of Nassarawa Elders Forum, Mallam Auwal Danladi over a small misunderstanding between them.

The woman, who is carrying a 6 months pregnancy alleged that her husband is used to assaulting her, which she find unbearable.

It was a coincidence that the Northeast Director of Foundation For Peace Professionals (FPP), Mr. Alkasim Aliyu and the Asst. P.R.O of FPP in Jos, Plateau state were present when the woman was narrating her story.

"My husband assaulted me over a small misunderstanding we had and I'm carrying a 6 months pregnancy. He mercilessly beats me and injured my face, right now he is at home" she said.

Mr. Alkasim instantly requested for the husband's contact and called him to know his whereabout, but the husband claimed that he wasn't nearby, whereas, the wife said she left him at home. After brief investigation about the FPP, the wife was taken to a nearby clinic for treatment and the husband was arrested by the police.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police Plateau state, ACP Grema and the D P O of Nassarawa Gwong assisted greatly in the peaceful resolution of the matter and we appreciate their prompt response.

This report will not be complete without acknowledging the kind gesture of PHC clinic Filing ball, for understanding the critical condition of the woman and treated her even without police report as recently directed by the authorities.

What do Nigerians really want?
Uncompleted projects due to lack of continuity in governance is hurting us. But do we really care?

If an administration come on board today, and instead of starting new projects of its own all together, the new administration decided to complete projects of the past governments so as to ensure continuity in governance, the same Nigerians who often complain of several abandoned projects will begin to shout at the top of their voice, this government lack original ideas to move the country forward. They are only working on projects from the past governments.

Then, when another administration comes on and decided to start its own brand new projects, leaving those of its predecessors uncompleted, the same Nigerians will begin to complain, why can't they complete the uncompleted projects of the previous government?

This contradictions is really disturbing.

As a result of this kind of disjointed reasoning, leaders across the country, particularly state governors that want to be duly accredited for their own ideas had often abandon uncompleted projects of those before them, thereby initiating new projects all together. A project, which may also end up not completed.

From North to South, Aba to Adamawa, the story is the same.

Former Kwara State governor, Alabi Lawal who left office in 2003 still have some of his water projects left uncompleted in Kwara State.

Very few courageous people, like President Muhammadu Buhari have dedicated his time and energy not to start new projects for praise singing, but to complete abandoned projects of past administrations, including those started as far back as 1972.

However, despite this courage, some people are bent on discouraging continuity, through disparaging remarks as a result of such continuity. Its so unfortunate.

This is why i am forced to ask, what do Nigerians really want?

Uncompleted projects everywhere or completed projects?

Remember, those uncompleted projects are done with our common wealth.

Whether we complete them or not, the billions that have gone into building them to their current states cannot be retrieved. Isn't it only proper to complete the projects to serve certain purposes, even if we disagree with its initial conception?

As a matter of fact, if any administration come on board, it is our collective duty to ensure that the new government complete old projects before embarking on new one's.

Let's think straight beyond sentiments. Its for our own good.

Between terrorism and criminality, IPOB and herdsmen in perspective
By Abdulrazaq O Hamzat

Following the proscription of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) group as a terrorist organization, debate about what differentiate terrorism from criminality has become a major topic in the country.

Sympathizers of IPOB, particularly those from the south east region have been trying to find justification for their disagreement on the proscription of the group, giving reference to the Fulani herdsmen, a criminal gang that they opined should have been labelled terrorist organization.

The Chairman of the South-East Senate caucus, Enyinnaya Abaribe in a recent interview was quoted to have said,“You cannot proscribe a group of people; you cannot leave glaring evidence of those who actually work against the unity of this country, those who are actually killing people, those who are actually taking up arms against this country and then you turn around and say that these people have a potential to do so, therefore you now go ahead to declare them a terrorist organization with the implications for this country that are very glaring.”

Before going any further, it is important to state that, both terrorist and criminal organizations are engaged in anti social behaviors that should be condemned by all. For no reason should any one justify a terrorist or criminal group, or favor one over the other. Both are menace to any society.

We should however guide against deliberate falsehood and dishonesty that is being promoted, especially by public figures, intellectuals and public officials. This will ensure that every contributor to public issue is doing so with the best of intention. Honesty and best intention should not be sacrificed on the alter of political correctness.

At this point, it is important to ask, what is the difference between a criminal and a terrorist? From record, crime is seen or generally understood to be something done for personal gain, to feed some person need, lust, or revenge. That’s crime and anyone who engages in such act is refereed to criminal. Terrorism on the other hand is understood to be actions taken to create a climate of fear in the populace at large that then leads to some big societal change.

For example, Steve and his group attacked John’s community and killed many people over disagreement on land, that's a crime and Steve’s group is refereed to as criminal organization. On the other hand, Steve and his group mounted a road block on the way to John’s community, waved flag and intimidated John and others to pledge allegiance to an imaginary country, failure to which they would be harmed, injured or killed. That’s terror and Steve’s group can be regarded as a terrorist organization. While in the first example, many people were actually killed by Steve’s group and it could be nothing more than crime, in the second instance, no one was killed yet, but it is terrorism.

One fundamental difference between a criminal and terrorist is that, criminals tend to avoid the limelight, but the reverse is the case for terrorists. While criminals commit the act, go underground and hide their faces from public glare, terrorist commit the act and celebrate it via media and recorded videos that is shared all over.

The aim of a terrorist group is to cast terror in the mind of the populace via threat of violence and forceful suppression. This is so because; terrorism usually has a strong political, cultural and social element to it. Unlike criminals, terrorists seek a high level of publicity for their actions to achieve its aim.

Some analysts have opined that, not every terrorist act is a crime and not every crime is a terrorist act. However, former US President, Barrack Obama maintained that, all acts of terrorism is crime, but not all crime is terrorism. A terrorist typically wants to create terror to scare people into succumbing to their will. A person or group can create terror with words or images; it doesn’t make it less dangerous than those throwing bombs. Criminals on the other hand just want to achieve a personal fulfillment of gain, revenge or others.

The activities of herdsmen have proven over time that it is criminal in nature and over a thousand herdsmen are currently in detention across the country, facing criminal investigation and prosecution. While more proactive responses are required to tame the deadly group, we cannot claim that nothing absolutely is being done to contain their criminal activities.

This brings us to the proscription of IPOB as a terrorist organization. Is IPOB a terrorist group? The answer can be found in the terrorism prevention act.

According to the act, a terrorist is a person who knowingly (a) does, attempt or threatens to do an act preparatory to or in furtherance of an act of terrorism. For example, ‘’we will make Nigeria worse than Somalia as stated by Ipob’’ (b) commits to do anything that is reasonably necessary to promote an act of terrorism; e.g, ‘’soliciting funds for the purchase of ammunition as captured on the video tape’’.

In another section, "act of terrorism"is defined as an act, which is deliberately done with malice, aforethought and which: (a) may seriously harm or damage a country. For example, establishing an illegal radio biafra to incite hate (b) is intended or can reasonably be regarded as having been intended to unduly compel a government to perform or abstain from performing any act; e.g, attempting to prevent election from holding in Anambra through suppression and terror, (c) seriously intimidate a population e.g, through promise of death and violence to anyone who disagrees with them, (d) otherwise influence such government by intimidation or coercion; e.g, setting up a Biafra Secrete Service and Guard to destabilize state activities and abuse, defame and threaten constituted authorities such as Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha and Anambra state governor, Willie Obiano.

Another acts that constitute terror, according to the act is for an organization to involve or causes, as the case may be (i) an attack upon a person's life which may cause serious bodily harm or death; e.g, killing police and some northerners among others as seen on videos widely circulated (ii) kidnapping of a person; e.g, kidnapping some northerners by BSS and torturing them in their yard as seen on some videos widely circulated (iii) destruction to a Government or public facility, a transport system, an infrastructure facility, including an information system, a fixed platform located on the continental shelf, a public place or private property, likely to endanger human life or result in major economic loss; e.g, burning of police station, vehicles etc as seen on videos widely circulated on the internet.

This is apart from attacking the army contingent on a lawful national duty, among others.

It is obvious from the foregoing that IPOB fulfill all the description of a terrorist organization as contained in the terrorism prevention act, as amended and they are so designated.

I would advise however that, rather than distort facts or attempt to cast government in dark light for doing what they consider to be right and proper, all well meaning Nigerians should advise all those with grievances to articulate their concerns and follow the constitutional process of agitating for them in a peaceful manner.
