National Open University of Nigeria is the best institution in Nigeria. You can quote me. If you are ready for Study, noun is your best place. If you want personal development, noun is your best place. But if you want to short cut, noun is not a place for you. If you want lecturers assisting you, don't go close to noun. In all, you can't graduate from noun and remain unemployed. You maybe under employed, but definately not unemployed. Noun is the only institution in Nigeria without jobless graduates. |

*Twitter is crazy* Until Twitter allows ISIS and Alqaeda to tweet death to America, without attempting to restrict them, Nigeria's ban on twitter will always be justified. Why do you think ISIS and Alqaeda are not on twitter? It's because Twitter didn't allow them to operate because their tweet is considered a threat to America and the US government will never accept that. Yet, Twitter is at home with someone twitting death to Nigeria, what they would never tolerate, against America. If Twitter can accomodate someone twitting death to Nigeria, but frown at someone who said he will speak to them in the language they understand, then Twitter is crazy. |

*More than 50% of Nigeria's security challenges are climate change problems- Abdulrazaq Hamzat* The Executive Director of Foundation for Peace Professionals also known as PeacePro, Mr Abdulrazaq Hamzat has described climate change as the number one problem facing Nigeria and the world. Abdulrazaq Hamzat, who is a peacebuilding professional also noted that, more than 50% of Nigeria's security challenges started as a climate change problem. This position was made while delivering a paper titled "Climate Change is a Water Problem" during a webinar of World Environment Day hosted by International Human Rights Commission in Karachi, Pakistan. According to Hamzat, Nigeria is currently battling with many crisis, which include but not limited to insecurity. "But in the true sense of it, if one takes a critical look at the situation in the country, one would realize that more than 50% of Nigeria's security challenges are largely climate change problem" he said. Hamzat explained that, Farmers-Herders clashes and Banditry, which are major security concerns in Nigeria that is pitching the southern part of the country with the North started as a problem of climate change, in which herders finding it difficult to feed and preserve their aminals in their usual environment due to disruption in the ecosystem, began to search for conducive environment for sustenance. "In the process of moving around in search of food, herdsmen begin to direct their aminals into farms, thereby causing crisis with farmers, a crisis that has now escalated into armed conflict in some environment, leading to invasion of many communities". Hamzat added that, in addition to the farmers-herders clashes, cattle rustling is another challenge that came out of the disruption in global ecosystem. According to him, while herders are moving around to new environment in search for food, many herders lost their cattles to criminal acts of cattle rustlers and in some situations, many herders even loose their lives. And in an effort to protect themselves from the rustlers, many herders began to acquire arms, especially AK-47. "Herdsmen that has lost their cattle with no means of livelihood saw the prospect in crime as a means of survival, starting with revenge against their former attackers, then suddenly to banditry, which has now become a major occupation". He said. Speaking further on climate change, Hamzat maintained that, "disruption in global ecosystem which is described as climate change has impacted the world in complex ways". "In Africa especially, climate change is an increasingly serious threat, as the continent is the most vulnerable to ecosystem disruption". Citing a report by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change, Hamzat explained that the vulnersbility of Africa to climate change is driven by a range of factors that include weak adaptive capacity, high dependency on ecosystem goods for livelihood and less developed agricultural production system. He maintained that, climate change is the number one problem in the world and he urges the United Nations to hold every nation accountable, inline with the degree of their contribution to the problem. "Africa is the least contributor to the ecosystem disruption, but it is the most affected by it consequences and in finding lasting solution to the challenge, the United Nations must device a scientific means of measuring nation's contribution to the problem and get them to take responsibility" he said. Earlier, Four Former Presidents and Prime Minister, namely Former President of Ecuardor, Mrs Rosalia Arteaga, Former President of Mauritius, Dr. Ameenah Firdaus and Former Prime Minister of Guinea Bissau, Mr Rui Duarte De Barros and former Interior Minister of Pakistan, Senator Raheem Malik call for quick action in tackling climate change, urging global community to work together to restore our ecosystem in the interest of future generations. They maintained that, developed Nations cannot continue to pay lip service to the issue of climate change because they are the highest contributor to the problem. Similarly, the World Chairman of International Human Rights Commission, Dr Shahid Amin Khan also urges the world to make peace with nature by growing trees, rewild our garden, change our diet and clean up rivers. Dr Khan also assured the gathering that the resolution of the event shall be passed to the United Nations and form basis of further engagement on the subject.

There's nothing new in current secessionist agitation There's nothing IPOB is doing today in South East that MASSOB didn't do in the past. MASSOB killed several soldiers and other security officials, attacked and attempted to take over govt house etc. But OBJ dealt with it, along side the OPC and the Niger Delta militancy. Despite Leaders and elders plea and blackmail, OBJ refused to take it lightly with the agitators, until the end of his administration. It was the South East Leaders and elders that eventually prevailed on Former President Yaradua to release MASSOB leaders that were captured and detained. So, as OBJ dealt with the agitators then, Buhari should deal with them now. He should speak with them, in the language they understand. |
hedonido:Yes, he's the people, as far as the law is concerned. He's at the time, the premier of eastern region, voted for by the people. He's the leader of the political party and all his position were delibrated at both the party and regional level, before it was presented as the regions position. Thanks |

gidgiddy:They all eventually agreed with Zik, through the intervention of the Brit, who also agreed with Zik. So, nobody can turn around to complain and be seeking secession |
OfoIgbo:What is wrong with 1999 constitution?* "One of the biggest misconceptions is this idea that the 1999 constitution was written by the military. Not True! No single military man was in the constitution drafting committee of 1975/1997 and the CA in 1977. Infact, the 1999 constitution was a replica of the 1979 constitution. The 1999 Constitution was drafted by a Constitution Debate Co-ordinating Committee headed by Justice Niki Tobi, with Dr. Suleiman Kurmo as deputy. They went round the country collecting memoranda through town hall meetings in Benin, Enugu, Jos, Phc, Kaduna, Kano, Ibadan, Lagos. ...Sokoto. They excluded military formations. After all the debates, the Chairman Tobi said, “In the light of the memoranda and the oral presentation on the 1995 Draft Constitution, it's clear that Nigerians basically opt for the 1979 Constitution with relevant amendments. They want it, and they've copiously given their reasons for their choice in the different memoranda and oral presentations. So we've recommended the adoption of the 1979 Constitution with relevant amendments from the 1995 Draft Constitution.” Abdulsalami accepted the recommendation. It's important to unpack this statement. Tobi was saying that based on oral & written submissions, Nigerians preferred the 1979 constitution but with a few amendments extracted from Abacha's jettisoned 1995 draft constitution. Let's look at how the 1979 constitution was drafted... In 1975, Gen Murtala Muhammed set up the constitution drafting committee headed by eminent jurist FRA Williams. The report of the committee formed the basis for discussions at the 1977 Constituent Assembly chaired by Justice Udo Udoma and had people like MKO Abiola, Bola Ige,Abraham Adesanya, Bisi Onabanjo among the 232 members. This 1977 CA gave us the 1979 constitution. This is the document the 1999 constitution was based ALMOST WORD FOR WORD. None of the characters involved in the drafting committee or CA in 1975-77 and 1998-99 were military. According to Simon Kolawole, the 1999 constitution is "pure plagiarism of the 1979 constitution". Exactly as Niki Tobi told us. The only differences were; the 13% derivation, the number of states in the federation (19 States in 1979 & 36 in 1999) and changing of FEDECO to INEC. Like Simon Kolawole said "The 1999 constitution was NOT written by the military. I also hasten to say that nobody can write a perfect constitution. Even if Prof. Ben Nwabueze, a well-respected constitutional expert, writes a new constitution today, loopholes will surface in a... ...matter of time. That is why laws are dynamic. As loopholes appear, you plug them". I agree with him. The 1999 constitution is not a perfect document. The point is not to throw it away (you can't) it's to fix it. But the fixing must start with the truth..." Yinka Ogunnubi |

*My stand on amalgamation and secession* By Abdulrazaq Hamzat Before independence in 1960, we are all aware of the 1914 amalgamation and the claim of lack of consent in the merging of the southern and northern protectorate. However, while the nation was preparing for independence, any region not pleased with the continuous stay in Nigeria had the opportunity of walking away before independence. The west could walk away and stay on its own. The east could do the same and so is the north. As a matter of fact, the north wanted to walk away, due to perceived incompatibility and it made this position known publicly, but the west and east prevailed on the North to stay. Dr Nnamdi Azikwe and Chief Obafemi Awolowo told Sardauna of Sokoto, we are the same and we can work on our areas of disagreement. Sardauna accepted and we all became one nation with the thumb print of God. The perceived lack of consent, in the 1914 amalgamation, was corrected prior to the independence and all region consented to Nigeria's nationhood. Even when Sardauna and Awolowo said we should have secession clause in the constitution, incase any region is displeased and want to exit the union, Dr Azikwe argued otherwise. He insisted that once we have agreed to stay together as one, the nation should become indivisible and indissoluble under God and every region agreed to this indivisibility of our great country. So, people who insisted that Nigeria is indivisible and indissoluble before independence in 1960, and worked against insertion of secession clause in the independent constitution, without remembering the 1914 amalgamation, cannot turn around and be complaining or raise question about the amalgamation, neither can they be asking for secession, after everyone had invested their political, economic and emotional capital in the nation. Therefore, we must make the nation work for all, inline with its founding principle of indivisibility and indissolubility. *Abdulrazaq Hamzat can be reached at discus4now@gmail.com* |
