Nairaland GeneralView This Video And Help A Naija Sister Win Her School Fees by blackhope(op):
Wow. Its been ages I came online. Glad to see that nairaland is becoming a stronger and more vibrant community!.

Well. To the topic at hand.

A naija sister really needs your help to win a scholarship video contest .

So if you have a minute (two actually) simply watch a video (in its entirety) that she made for the contest here :-

https://whatsyourstory.trendmicro.com/blog/entry/1-01e956/

Simply watching the video from start to end will give her one more view of the video which counts towards her winning the contest.

To take it a step further you can vote up the video and comment on it. However this step requires registering on trend micro which is a put off for most people. If you do decide to register (answer 4 questions or so and provide an email), then you can watch the full video again after logging in, then click the heart symbol to vote and optionally comment on it.

There you go. its not so hard to lend a helping hand where you can.
Art, Graphics & VideoWhat do you folks think about this 2 minute video - The Legend of Netvenger by blackhope(op):
It is a video about a fictional superhero who somehow gets digitized and transmitted into the web and then gets duplicated unto every internet device connected to the net. Trillions of her code are able to monitor the web and warn internet users about the many online dangers on the web in real time. Do you think this would make a good movie?.

PoliticsAfrica's Race To $1,000,000,000,000 - And The Winner Is... by blackhope(op): 6:20pm On Apr 30, 2015
(CNN)Nigeria is set to be the first African country with an economy larger than $1 trillion, according to the latest projections from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Africa's most populous nation, which recently held peaceful elections, revamped its gross domestic product data in 2014 and pulled ahead of South Africa to become the continent's largest economy with a GDP of $469 billion. Between now and 2030, experts predict annual growth rates as high as 7.92% resulting in a GDP of $1.05 trillion.

"A lot of Nigeria's growth will come from agriculture and services are huge in Nigeria," says Charles Robertson, global chief economist at Renaissance Capital. He adds that he actually expects the country's GDP to reach $1 trillion before 2030. "Banking, retail, telecoms and Nollywood has been an explosive growth story in past couple of years."

As a source of employment for 70% of Nigeria's population in 2013, the country's $56 billion agriculture sector currently accounts for 24% of GDP and the country's minister of agriculture, Akinwumi Adesina, has said "the new millionaires of Nigeria will be in agriculture."

PoliticsRe: Pictures: South East Youths Declare Total Support For President Jonathan by blackhope: 8:15pm On Mar 19, 2015
It is futile attempting to influence or allocate blocs/groups (regions, religions, associations, tribes, interest groups etc) of votes to candidates regardless of their party, based on public announcements of 'group endorsements' or by bribing local 'respected' opinion leaders or distributing 11th hour gifts for stomach infrastructure, etc.

At the end of the day each individual will cast their lone vote with their PVC for whomever they decide to vote for on March 28.

And most people have already made up their minds.

The basis of their voting decisions is another matter entirely.

jcflex:
Joe Biden, vice president of the United States, on Wednesday spoke with President Goodluck Jonathan on the 2015 general election, which was rescheduled for March 28 and April 11.

He expressed support for the use of card readers by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the elections, according to a statement issued by the United States Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria.

Biden also expressed “concern” about recent political violence in the country and “reiterated” the need for Jonathan, the candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Muhammadu Buhari, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to condemn it.

THE FULL TEXT:

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden spoke yesterday with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari ahead of the Nigerian presidential election, which is scheduled for March 28.

The Vice President commended President Jonathan and General Buhari for signing the Abuja Accord in mid-January as a show of their commitment to non-violence throughout the election process.

The Vice President further expressed the United States’ support for the Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission and its work to deliver free, fair, and credible elections, in part through its essential efforts to distribute Permanent Voter Cards and help ensure that electronic voter card readers are in place and fully operational.

He also noted his concern about the violence during some recent election-related events and reiterated the need for both candidates to make clear that such violence has no place in democratic elections.

Vice President Biden affirmed that the United States stands with the Nigerian people in support of credible and peaceful elections, and will continue to stand with the Nigerian people whatever the outcome.

not entirely true.. I read that other article some days back. This one added salts and pepper. The newsrescue article said that they unilaterally started the renewed efforts to destroy boko haram. Where were they all this while? They waited until election period to start an intensified effort against them? Because they are trying to gain popularity for goodluck? Its a pity that the press wants to lower the morale of our soldiers in the name of politics. Imagine after giving so much effort to make a breakthrough someone else takes all the glory and no one believe that u are actually the hero. Ofcourse your morale would be grounded etc
You are right!. That reuters article does not mention the bold declaration by the chadian president about taking unilateral action. And it also does'nt mention anything about how the Boko Haram leader managed to escape!

In another reuters article I just read - http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/03/04/us-nigeria-violence-shekau-idUSKBN0M029220150304 .. - (another possible newsrescue source) which contains relevant statements from the chadian president on the subject I also did'nt find those inflammatory statements from the chadian president.

Read the report folks - there are many parts to it....
PoliticsRe: INEC Wasn’t Ready For Elections On Feb 14 - US Institutions by blackhope: 4:51pm On Feb 12, 2015
Violence in pre-election period.

The delegation heard reports of recent election-related violence in Jos, Plateau State and Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and the use of inflammatory messages by some party officials and supporters, sometimes delivered through print and social media. Some interlocutors alleged that in response to these acts of violence and utterances, certain elements of the security services have not conducted themselves evenhandedly. Security services interviewed by the delegation denied this allegation. Lack of confidence in the security services, were it to persist, could as just one example provide an excuse for vigilante activity, which would then raise the risk of spiraling partisan violence at the state and local levels. The delegation learned that unlike during past elections when interagency collaboration among security services was a challenge, INEC has created and co-chairs with the national security adviser, the “Interagency Consultative Committee on Election Security” (ICCES), to facilitate seamless coordination. ICCES committees have been created at the state and LGA levels as well.
PoliticsRe: INEC Wasn’t Ready For Elections On Feb 14 - US Institutions by blackhope: 4:49pm On Feb 12, 2015
Election administration.

The delegation is concerned that millions of permanent voter cards (PVCs) have not yet been distributed by INEC. Although INEC plans to move the distribution of PVCs from the LGA level down to the level of wards (which are smaller units under the LGAs and closer to the polling points), that exercise has not started in all states. Moreover, some Nigerians stated that in a number of states, the distribution exercise has repeatedly been postponed in some locations, leading to further erosion of trust in INEC. Some Nigerians are still unsure whether a voter without a PVC, but whose name is on the register, will be allowed to vote on election day and what arrangements will be put in place to adjudicate such matters.

Similarly, INEC brands the voter card readers (VCRs), a handheld machine that will be used to scan the biometric voter cards, as an innovation in Nigeria that would strengthen the integrity of the voting process; however, the procurement of the VCRs is still underway and not all card readers have been delivered to INEC. INEC is confident the delivery will be made and has issued guidelines to address card reader malfunction. INEC also views the card reader as a confidence building measure that would allow the commission to track the number of accredited voters and make sure they match the figures to be reported on the results sheet. Yet, some Nigerians are apprehensive about what would happen should the remaining VCRs not be delivered on time, or should many of these new machines malfunction on election day.

While INEC has specific plans for recruiting and deploying ad hoc poll workers that would include current and former members of the National Youth Service Corps and students in tertiary education institutions, some members of the public are concerned that training of these workers has yet to begin.
PoliticsRe: INEC Wasn’t Ready For Elections On Feb 14 - US Institutions by blackhope: 4:44pm On Feb 12, 2015
The impact of Boko Haram.

The presence of Boko Haram poses a political risk in that not conducting polls in significant parts of a region viewed as the stronghold of one of the contesting parties, even if for reasons of insecurity, would mean the disenfranchisement of a large number of voters. This would well call into question the legitimacy of the election in the eyes of the population, not only in the affected states but more widely.
PoliticsRe: INEC Wasn’t Ready For Elections On Feb 14 - US Institutions by blackhope: 4:40pm On Feb 12, 2015
Miscommunication.

For example, while INEC introduced a biometric registry and machine-readable permanent voter cards (PVCs) to curb fraud and duplicate registrations, some critics of INEC argue that there are no legal provisions for INEC to require a PVC (in lieu of a temporary voting card), and that the biometric features of the PVC go beyond minimum requirements of Nigerian law. Similarly, INEC explains the reduction in the number of voters in the voter registry from 73 million in 2011 to 68.8 million in 2014 as a result of steps taken to expunge from the registry double registrations and underage and deceased voters. However, some critics of INEC are concerned that the new figure does not reflect the growing population of the country...

Perceptions of political power in Nigeria.

... For example, they point to the lack of transparency in candidate nominations or party primaries, citing cases in which the candidate preferred by party leaders is given the nomination regardless of votes cast in the primaries. As noted by a highly respected Nigerian democrat, “Once an unpopular candidate emerges through this ‘selection process,’ the leadership that anointed that candidate then has no choice but to use fraudulent means to help the candidate win.” Given that party leadership in Nigeria is mostly male, this process also discourages the meaningful participation of women in politics and their access to positions of leadership....

PoliticsRe: Certificate Saga: Hausa Language Was Not Offered In 1961, Says Report by blackhope: 1:09pm On Jan 26, 2015
okpismart:
Despite the release of the school certificate result of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, the controversy over the released result has not subsided.

A research report by an educationist and Professor of Educational Foundations at the University of Ilorin, A. A. Adeyinka, has punched holes in the claims by Buhari that he sat for and got a credit pass in Hausa Language from the Provincial College (now Government College), Katsina, in 1961.

Adeyinka, in the report titled: “Major Trends in Curriculum Development in Nigeria”, said no school in Nigeria offered subjects in local languages at the time.

His research report had further chipped away the credibility of the Statement of Result released by the college to support Buhari’s claim that he sat for the secondary school certificate examination in 1961.

According to Adeyinka’s research findings available at www.unilorin.edu, prior to the emergence of a centralised government of the regime of General Yakubu Gowon from 1966 to 1975, all regions in Nigeria had different academic curriculums.

He added that it was only the Western Region that offered a local language as a subject in both its curriculum and school certificate examinations.

Wrong!.

Here is what Cambridge itself said about that

The organisation also confirmed that according to the Regulations for 1961, African Language papers, including those for Hausa were set for the West African School Certificate.

Why, that report was written by none other than JideOfor Adibe( Senior Lecturer, Nasarawa State University). Same fella who with top think hat on put a very positive spin on Alamieyeseighas pardon.

"There is, in my opinion, at least one justifiable ground for pardoning Alamieyeseigha: while his corruption – alleged and confessed- in office is condemnable, the way he was removed from office smacked of impunity and vendetta – something that has often turned the fight against corruption in this country into a charade. You cannot rig the legal processes to achieve a desired outcome – even if you caught the thief with his fingers in the cookie jar. ".
