PoliticsAisha Yesufu Criticizes NDC Primary Election In Abuja by blamingthedevil(op): 12:20am On May 30
On the Record: NDC Primaries... A Better Abuja Is Inevitable | #AishaforSenate2031
As the dust settles on the NDC Primaries, I want to set the record straight: I did not quit, I did not drop out of the race. I stayed to the end. I also do not intend to litigate a process that was never truly allowed to happen, I share my truth because the people of Abuja deserve the truth.

Why I Ran
I came into politics from a deep conviction: that to drive the transformation we hope to see, it is not enough to complain from the outside. You must step into the ring with your convictions and fight to get into the positions where decisions are made with the weight of the law.

I understood what I was getting into. I knew that the quality of our politics has not yet risen to the occasion, that values-based candidates do not easily emerge by merit in a system built to resist them. But I made a decision going in: I would not compromise my values. I would stand for what is right. I did not leave advocacy to go into politics. I took advocacy into politics.

The Campaign We Built
I ran a campaign I am truly proud of. Our ground game was on point. We had grassroots credibility, the kind you don't manufacture in a backroom. The SAY-Nation volunteer network was formidable, so formidable that the process had to be taken out of the open and resolved through a clandestine affirmation behind closed doors.

Street by street, ward by ward, conversation by conversation, we built something real. To every volunteer who knocked on doors, every supporter who argued our case in market squares and motor parks, every young person who believed that this time could be different: I see you, and I am deeply grateful. You showed Abuja what a people-powered campaign looks like.

The Process That Wasn't
What was billed as a primary was, in truth, a predetermined outcome dressed in procedural formalities. The primaries were repeatedly postponed. Venues were changed at the last minute. Guidelines of the party were not followed. Delegate based process was introduced to be conducted at a central location instead of the direct primaries to be conducted at Local Government headquarters. When the moment came, the contest was not decided by delegates in the open; it was affirmed in a closed room, away from the people whose voices it was supposed to reflect. The party will indeed go on to release statements upon statements about the free and fair nature of the Abuja FCT primaries. They are entitled to their voice, but the facts that transpired when litigated by conscience and the guidelines of the electoral act do not reflect justice and fairness.

Why I Didn't Escalate

I ran to win. But when the process was subverted, I made a choice: I would not exhaust myself in a grievance process designed to wear people down. I chose instead to extract every lesson this experience had to offer.

I now understand the architecture of the system in ways no textbook, no punditry, no amount of outside observation could ever teach. That knowledge is worth more than any petition I could have filed. I leave this process with something far more valuable than a ticket; I leave with clarity.

It is important to note that this account reflects my experience in the Abuja FCT Senatorial race. It does not speak to what transpired in other states, nor do I claim to understand the specifics of those contests. Every state had its own dynamics, and I will not generalise from my experience.

On the NDC
For now, despite its shortcomings, the NDC remains the only party that has given the better Presidential candidate in the 2027 electoral cycle a platform to run. To everyone within the party working to make this possible, I am grateful. Transformation does not come from outside alone. It must also be fought for within.

A Better Abuja Is Inevitable
This is not the end. What we built, the network, the credibility, the grassroots trust, cannot be taken away in a backroom.

BusinessHow A Stable Naira Is Quietly Fixing Nigeria- Kalu Aja by blamingthedevil(op): 6:35pm On May 25
Kalu Aja
@FinPlanKaluAja1

The Naira has shown remarkable stability against the US dollar since late 2024. After extreme volatility with rates spiking above $1: N1,600 in early 2025, the official exchange rate has settled in the $1: N1,350–1,430 range by May 2026, with daily volatility dropping sharply from over 4% in 2024 to around 0.5%. This is one of the most significant positive macro developments in recent years.
While improved FX liquidity and CBN reforms played a role, one project stands out as a major structural driver: the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. The 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery has fundamentally altered Nigeria's foreign exchange demand profile. It is delivering measurable relief to the country's fiscal position. This reduction in FX demand for fuel imports has directly eased pressure on the Naira. Analysts refer to it as the "Dangote Effect". Lower import needs mean less reliance on CBN interventions and reduced vulnerability, which should reassure investors and policymakers about Nigeria's economic resilience.
The question is: how is this stability actually affecting Nigeria's fiscal numbers—debt, deficit financing, borrowing needs, and trade?
Nigeria's external debt, roughly 30–35% of total outstanding public debt, is denominated in US dollars. A more stable and stronger Naira directly lowers the cost of servicing that debt.
In 2025, Nigeria spent approximately $5.21 billion on external debt service. Under the new floating exchange rate policy in early 2024, this would have translated into a much higher Naira burden. Recent stability has made the Naira equivalent more predictable and relatively contained. In the 2026 Federal budget, debt service is still projected at a massive N15–16 trillion. Still, the exchange-rate risk component has been meaningfully reduced. This is not trivial. Every 100 Naira depreciation against the dollar adds billions of Naira to the annual debt service bill. Stability, therefore, frees up some fiscal space, even if only modestly, and reduces the risk of sudden budget blowouts caused by currency shocks.
A stable Naira reduces the need for CBN interventions using the BDCs or heavy domestic borrowing to defend the currency. It supports investor confidence, helping attract more foreign portfolio inflows and easing pressure on the domestic bond market.
Lower fuel import costs reduce the overall import bill, easing pressure on the Federation budget and Naira and indirectly supporting debt service. The crude import bill is rising, but this is offset by additional revenue from taxes on refined product exports and from potential production of polypropylene and linear alkyl benzene as the Dangote refinery expands.
However, the core deficit problem remains large. The 2026 budget still shows a deficit of around N23–24 trillion, with total new borrowing planned at N29 trillion. Stability helps manage the existing debt stock. Still, it does not magically close the wide gap between revenue and expenditure. The government is still borrowing heavily to finance recurrent spending and infrastructure.
Nigeria has continued to record strong trade surpluses, partly because a more stable exchange rate has not undermined export competitiveness as much as feared and has reduced the cost of essential imports. A stronger Naira makes imports cheaper in Naira terms. This has two important effects: It eases imported inflation, especially for raw materials, machinery, and refined petroleum. It also supports import-substitution industries. The Dangote Refinery, for example, benefits enormously from predictable and relatively stable FX — it can plan long-term without the fear of sudden Naira crashes disrupting feedstock or spare parts imports.
Nigeria recorded a record trade surplus of N17.78 trillion in 2025, with the refinery cited as a major contributor through import substitution and early exports. By reducing crude-for-fuel swaps and outright imports, the refinery has narrowed the current-account deficit and supported foreign reserve accumulation (reserves rose from $32.6 billion to $33.8 billion in the period following ramp-up).
Naira stability since late 2024 has lowered certain fiscal risks, improved planning, and given the government some breathing room. The CBN under Governor Cardoso deserves credit for the FX reforms that contributed to this outcome. But stability is a platform, not a solution. Nigeria's fundamental fiscal challenges remain, presenting an opportunity for meaningful reform.
Debt service still significantly crowds out capital expenditure. Non-oil revenue collection is still too low. Oil revenue volatility has not disappeared. Nigeria still has very large deficits financed by heavy borrowing.
In other words, a stable Naira makes the existing problems more manageable. Still, it does not fix the underlying revenue-expenditure imbalance or the structural weaknesses in the economy. It should be seen as an opportunity rather than a victory.
The government must use this window of relative calm to aggressively grow non-oil revenues, improve spending efficiency, and gradually reduce reliance on borrowing. Stability has bought Nigeria time. The real test is what Nigeria does with that time, which can inspire policymakers and investors with a sense of purpose and urgency.

Politics'Membership timeline': INEC appeals judgement, seeks stay of execution by blamingthedevil(op): 6:27pm On May 25
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has asked the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal to set aside the judgement of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which nullified part of the the election guidelines put in place by the commission for the conduct of the 2027 general election.

Rexall that last week, Justice Muhammed Umar of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, nullified guidelines issued by the INEC directing political parties to submit their membership registers and databases by May 10, 2026, as a condition for participation in the 2027 general election.

A political party, the Youth Party, had filed a suit challenging the legality of the electoral body’s directive or guidelines.

The court said in its judgement that INEC could not lawfully shorten the timeline already provided under Section 29(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 for the submission of party membership records and candidates’ particulars.

But, in the appeal notice dated May 25, 2026, filed by INEC, through its Counsel, Chief Alex Izinyon, SAN, the electoral umpire prayed the court to set aside the judgement of the lower court.

Apart from praying the court to set aside the judgement, the Senior Lawyer, in the appeal, asked the court to stay the execution of the judgement.

AN ATTACK ON DEMOCRACY: MY EXPERIENCE AT THE ADC PRIMARY ELECTION VENUE

It is with deep concern and a heavy sense of responsibility that I bring to public attention a disturbing incident that occurred today at the venue of the ADC primary elections.
I was subjected to an unfortunate and unacceptable attack allegedly carried out by individuals identified as loyalists and political associates of Senator Ireti. What should have been a peaceful, democratic exercise intended to reflect the collective will of party members was instead overshadowed by intimidation, aggression, and acts capable of undermining the sanctity of internal democracy.
Let me state clearly: violence, intimidation, and political harassment have no place in our democracy. No aspirant, supporter, or citizen should face threats or attacks for exercising their democratic right to participate in a legitimate political process.
This incident goes beyond me as an individual. It is about the future of democracy in the Federal Capital Territory and Nigeria at large. If intimidation becomes a tool of political participation, then the integrity of our electoral system and democratic institutions stands threatened

PoliticsDavid Mark's Daughter, Blessing Onuh, Wins Benue APC Reps Ticket by blamingthedevil(op): 7:27am On May 18
Senator David Mark, ADC National Chairman’s daughter wins Benue APC Reps ticket

source

Blessing Onuh, daughter of former Senate President and National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, David Mark, has obtained the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket to contest for another term in the House of Representatives ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Also emerging victorious in the party’s primaries was Mrs Regina Akume, wife of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), who secured the APC return ticket in Benue State.

The ruling party conducted its direct primary elections on Saturday across the 11 federal constituencies spread within Benue State’s 23 local government areas.

The exercise produced major upsets as six incumbent lawmakers lost their re-election bids. Five of the affected lawmakers were said to be loyalists of the SGF, Senator George Akume, while candidates reportedly aligned with Governor Hyacinth Alia gained the upper hand.

Among those defeated were Dickson Tarkghir of Makurdi/Guma, Sesoo Gboko of Vandeikya/Konshisha, Asema Achado representing Gwer East/Gwer West, Ugbor Terseer of Kwande/Ushongo, Sekav Iortyom of Buruku, and David Ogewu from Oju/Obi federal constituency.

However, Regina Akume successfully retained the APC ticket for Gboko/Tarka federal constituency, while Blessing Onuh won the Otukpo/Ohimini contest. Other serving lawmakers who secured fresh tickets include Ojema Ojotu of Apa/Agatu and Solomon Wombo representing Katsina-Ala/Logo/Ukum federal constituency.

In Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo federal constituency, Anthony Agom emerged as the APC candidate after the sitting lawmaker, Philip Agbese, defected from the APC to the Labour Party shortly before the primaries.

Meanwhile, Engr. Terfa Ikya defeated incumbent Dickson Tarkghir to win the Makurdi/Guma APC ticket. In Gwer East/Gwer West, Engr. Terhemba Nongo recorded the highest votes to unseat Asema Achado.

For Kwande/Ushongo federal constituency, Prof. Kohol Iornem defeated incumbent lawmaker Ugbor Terseer to emerge winner.

Engr. Livinus Tsar also triumphed over serving lawmaker Sesoo Gboko in Vandeikya/Konshisha, while Gideon Inyom defeated Sekav Iortyom to clinch the Buruku federal constituency ticket.

The Buruku primary election reportedly experienced tension following the snatching of results in one council ward.

The situation was later contained after a suspect was arrested. In another ward, a presiding officer was accused of failing to submit election results.

At the Oju/Obi federal constituency primary, former Benue Commissioner for Information, Dr Peter Egbodo, defeated incumbent David Ogewu. Egbodo had recently resigned from Governor Alia’s cabinet before joining the race.

Chairman of the National Assembly Primary Election Committee for Benue State, Alhaji Sabiu Saidu Mahuta, officially announced the winners after declaring the contestants with the highest number of votes victorious.

Mahuta urged all aspirants to accept the outcome of the primaries in good faith, stressing that there should be no bitterness among participants because “there are no winners or losers.”
