Unfortunately, much of your supporting argument does not survive fact-checking.

Nigeria's debt burden remains a serious concern. However, the picture is more nuanced than you are suggesting .
When President Tinubu assumed office, debt servicing was consuming almost all federal revenue, leaving very little fiscal space. Since then, revenue growth and reforms have reduced that ratio to roughly half of federal revenue, while longstanding obligations such as the foreign airlines' trapped funds have been substantially cleared. So, while debt sustainability remains a challenge, the claim that "nobody knows where the money is going" is an exaggeration. Borrowing is tied to published budgets and approved projects, even if Nigerians are right to demand greater transparency and better value for money.


Your aircraft claim is even weaker. It is true that some aircraft delivered under Tinubu were ordered during Buhari’s administration, including the T-129 helicopters contracted in 2021. But it is false that Tinubu has not equipped the Air Force with a single aircraft. By December 2024, the Nigerian Air Force reported 12 advanced aircraft acquired under the administration, including King Air, DA-62, T-129 and AW-109 platforms. The administration also initiated the purchase of 24 M-346 fighter-attack jets and 10 AW-109 Trekker helicopters. Inherited procurement and new procurement can exist simultaneously.

On NELFUND, abolishing it is a legitimate policy position—but reallocating its funding to universities does not solve the student’s immediate problem.
A laboratory project may improve the institution, but it will not pay the fees or upkeep of the poor student who is about to withdraw. That is like renovating a hospital while sending the patient home because he cannot afford admission.

The present law provides NELFUND with 1% of taxes, levies and duties collected by the federal revenue service, alongside appropriations, repayments and investment income. It is therefore not simply a loose “1% allocation” that can be transferred without changing the law and replacing the support students currently receive.

The TETFund claim contains a half-truth. The original tax-reform proposal would eventually have removed TETFund’s share of the new development levy by 2030. That proposal was rightly criticised. However, the National Assembly rejected the defunding arrangement, and the final 2025 law retained funding for both TETFund and NELFUND through the development levy. Tinubu did not simply issue an executive order to “scrap TETFund.”

Finally, “student loans have failed in the West” is too sweeping. America’s mortgage-style loan system has severe default problems, but income-contingent systems operate differently: repayments rise with income and can protect low earners from unaffordable fixed payments. Researchers recognise both advantages and fiscal risks. The lesson is to design Nigeria’s system carefully—not to declare every student-loan model dead.

By all means, demand lower fees, stronger TETFund investment and tighter NELFUND oversight. But abolishing the bridge before constructing another one leaves poor students stranded in the river.

The real policy question remains: How will universities receive more funding while financially vulnerable students are kept in school—and precisely where will the replacement money come from?

The Federal Government has continued the rollout of its Presidential Conditional Grant Scheme (PCGS), a ₦50,000 grant programme designed to support nano businesses across Nigeria.

Launched in December 2023 under the Presidential Palliative Programme, the initiative aims to provide one-time grants of ₦50,000 to one million nano businesses spread across the country’s 774 local government areas.

The grant is intended to help small business owners strengthen their operations, improve cash flow, and cushion the effects of economic challenges.

To identify beneficiaries, the Federal Government partnered with state governments, the Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (NASME), ministers, senators, and members of the House of Representatives. Beneficiaries were shortlisted using the Federal Government’s approved selection criteria.

The government has also confirmed that the grant is a one-time payment, with each successful beneficiary receiving ₦50,000.

The programme forms part of broader efforts to support micro and nano enterprises, improve business resilience, and stimulate economic activity at the grassroots level.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has faulted former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s latest allegations against him, describing them as a desperate attempt to rewrite history and confer political advantage on his preferred candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the former President’s decision to accuse him of bribing the late Rt. Hon. Ghali Umar Na’Abba to impeach him was not only reckless but fundamentally unfair to a man who is no longer alive to defend his name.

“As Africans, we understand the solemn duty of speaking truthfully about the dead. It is therefore deeply troubling that former President Obasanjo has chosen this moment to allege that I gave the late Rt. Hon. Ghali Umar Na’Abba a bribe to impeach him.”

“If this allegation were true, why did he never make it while Rt. Hon. Na’Abba was alive? Why wait until the only man who could confirm or refute the claim has departed this world? By invoking a deceased man as the principal witness to such a grave allegation, former President Obasanjo has denied Nigerians the opportunity of hearing the other side of the story.

“The late Rt. Hon. Ghali Na’Abba cannot now defend his own integrity or respond to the allegation that he accepted a bribe. It is unfair to his memory and contrary to our cultural values to conscript the dead into contemporary political battles when they no longer have a voice.”

Atiku noted that the allegations themselves are not supported by any judicial finding or official determination.

“If there was indeed evidence of any criminal conduct as alleged, Nigerians are entitled to ask why no action was taken at the time by a government that wielded the full powers of the Nigerian state.”

The former Vice President said it is difficult to ignore the political timing of the recycled allegations.

“Coming at a time when the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election is taking shape, the obvious objective is to besmirch my person and reputation and confer an undeserved political advantage on the former President’s kinsman. Nigerians, however, know better. They are too discerning to be distracted by stale allegations resurrected for political convenience.”

Atiku maintained that the roots of the former President’s hostility towards him are well known.

“My offence was that I stood firmly against the unconstitutional third-term agenda. As a democrat, I chose the path of constitutionalism and the rule of law. Rather than surrender democratic principles on the altar of personal ambition, I defended the Constitution and successfully asserted my rights through the courts in a series of landmark legal victories against a sitting President. Those battles are now part of Nigeria’s democratic history. It is evident that the bitterness arising from that defining period has failed to leave former President Obasanjo.”

He said he would not be distracted into exchanging words over historical political disputes while Nigeria grapples with unprecedented economic hardship, rising insecurity, mass unemployment, hunger and disturbing questions surrounding the management of public resources.

“The task before leaders today is not to rewrite history but to rescue the future. Nigerians are more interested in knowing why food prices continue to soar, why public debt continues to rise despite increased revenues, and why scandal after scandal continues to trail the current administration than in revisiting political disagreements from over two decades ago.”

Atiku added that while former President Obasanjo is entitled to support any candidate of his choice, he should do so openly.

“If former President Obasanjo has chosen to take a political position ahead of 2027, he should simply declare it and allow Nigerians to judge it on its merits, rather than attempting to influence public opinion through allegations that can no longer be tested because the principal witness is no longer alive.

“Our focus remains unwavering: offering credible alternatives, defending democracy, demanding accountability and working with all patriotic Nigerians to restore competent, transparent and people-centred leadership to our country. Nigerians deserve solutions to today’s problems, not recycled political tales from yesterday.”
