So long as there is a demand in neigboring countries, the prices of petroleum product will be inelastic in those places. It is what a A JS3 economics student in secondary school knows. Let me sttempt to break it down further if they will even have the capacity to understand.

The demand for items considered a necessity commodity is price inelastic. That is, so long as people need it for their everyday life and survival, any price increase will be pushed to the consumers.

In Nigeria and neigbouring countries, petroleum products are considered a necessity for everyday living....transportation, power generation, etc....so if you increase the prices, it will be passed on.....simply means if the prices are increased in Nigeria, it will be increased at the borders too, it will never deter smuggling....in fact, it increases the motivation for smuggling.

A typical example is when the subsidy was claimed to be "gone" by the cerificate forger when he was "high", they increased the prices in Nigeria, it never discouraged smuggling because there was demand and the border remained porous , they simply passed on the cost to the neighbouring countries. If you increase the prices to N10,000, so long as there is a demand in those places, the border is porous and they have the funds, they will continue to buy at your prices no matter how high you raise it to deter them from buying.

Another example, as much as the US government have made the cost of smuggling of hard drugs to the US through their land borders very costly, which has made the drugs more expensive in the US with its attendant implications if caught, smuggling of hard drugs through the land borders has never ceased nor reduced. In fact, its been on the increase....simply because, the demand is there and some people consider the drugs a necessity as lifestyle.

The problem with mofos like the one below is that they take all the bull crap stories the government puts out there without reasoning it out first....maybe because they dont have the capacity to or they are agents of the government.......

Just because the minister of state said recent fuel scarcity was due to the activities of smugglers they just never checked the facts,they accepted it and went to town. Nobody bothered to ask the minister why smuggling even takes place with the presence of customs and other security agents at the border.

Is increasing the price of fuel the solution to smuggling or tightening of the porous borders?

If you increase to N3000 per litre in Nigeria, but there is demand in those neighbouring countries, and the border remains porous, smuggling will continue.

In partnership with the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT), the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) says there are plans to deploy a nuclear reactor for power generation.

Yusuf-Aminu Ahmed, chairman of NAEC, spoke on Thursday at the 20th anniversary symposium of Nigeria’s first nuclear research reactor-1 (NNR-1) in Zaria.

Ahmed said Nigeria’s accumulated expertise in nuclear power positions the country well for advancing to the next stage of power generation using the technology.

“We have used the reactor for research and development over the years and now we are going to use the reactor for the purpose of generating electricity,” the chairman said.

“President Bola Tinubu has already given the commission a mandate to see how it contributes in the clean energy sphere of Nigeria and [how] the nuclear energy programme of Nigeria would participate.”

He said the project’s timeline would not be publicly disclosed, adding that international partners and vendors are working closely with the commission on the initiative.

Ahmed said intergovernmental agreements have been concluded with some vendors regarding nuclear power in Nigeria, noting that the president would make the announcement soon.

In his remarks, George Akume, secretary to the government of the federation, said the 20-year safe operation of the nuclear research reactor demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to the safe utilisation of nuclear energy.

Akume said the procedures involved in operating a nuclear research reactor are similar to those required for establishing a reactor that would produce electricity.

“President Tinubu has re-echoed the need for having nuclear energy into the sources of electric power generation in Nigeria and Nigerians should look forward to this power,” he said.

“Electricity generated through nuclear energy is clean and safe except for human errors or natural causes such as the one that happened in Hiroshima.”

Also speaking, Sunday Jonah, director of CERT, said the occasion was held to commemorate two decades of safely operating, maintaining, and utilising the first nuclear research reactor known as NNR-1.

Dangote has also promised the products won't get reduced in terms of quality unlike what we used to have, promised they will track consumptions by local consumers unlike hoarding and sell to neighbouring countries at a higher price, so what saner people are telling you but you simpleton has failed to realize with you stubborn coconut 🥥 head is it won't be business as usual, although NNPC will buy but the dynamics at the long run Dangote will have a say because his name and his products are as stake.
