Science/TechnologyEnergy Efficient Appliances Can Save On Solar Installation Cost by Blog2010(op): 11:11pm On Mar 08, 2010
Individuals and companies can reduce their installation cost by opting for more energy efficient products (appliances).

Energy efficient products can reduce the energy requirement therefore less panels should be needed and that inevitably should reduce your cost outlay. (Energy efficient appliances tend to be of similar price to non efficient appliance)  This is especially important when air conditioners (coolers) are required in the premise.

Air conditioners tend to consume lots of energy compared to most household appliance and the Nigerian hot terrain makes the use of Air conditioners a necessity. (Although energy efficiency is not limited to air conditioners it applies to all household appliance such as light bulbs, TV, washing machine etc.

For those considering solar power installation and already have appliances installed in their premise should consult an alternative energy consultant that can conduct an energy survey and also advice on best solution to reducing your energy usage and reduction of installation cost.
Science/TechnologyRe: Help Me Build Solar Panel & Invecter by Blog2010: 4:51pm On Mar 03, 2010
@IUKPE

I understand the reason that individuals prefer not to post prices on their threads; this is because each individual(s) has different energy consumtion needs and requirements. On average the cost of a 'watt' is N800 - N900 therefore if you want to generate 100w your cost for the panel can range between N80,000 - N90,000. This is excluding the other components such as battery, charge contollers and inverter.

It is advisable that an alternative energy consultant be consulted prior to purchasing panels, so proper advice can be given in regards to required power to be generated. The consultant should be able to conduct an energy survey based on your appliances plus usage and should be able to advice on energy efficient products and appliance so that the required energy consumption can be reduced therefore allowing for reduced cost of solar power.

do drop a post if more advice is required

Science/TechnologyRe: Solar Energy - All You Need To Know by Blog2010: 5:35pm On Jan 30, 2010
I commend Sathob for his/her extensive knowledge on the application of Solar Energy as well as raising the topic for dissatisfaction with the ‘norm’ of electricity supply from Grid system, so therefore,  I won’t touch on the technical aspects of solar energy components.  Sathob makes valid points that one feels its time for ‘Change’ towards renewable energy,  most especially Solar Energy due to the natural terrain of Nigeria.

Using solar energy allows us as individuals and organisations to reduce our carbon emission footprint that scientists argue, leads to global warming (I think Nigeria is hot enough already smiley) Unpredictable changes leads to risks of extreme weather, floods, hurricanes, or heat waves amongst many other natural disasters we tend to read, listen or watch in the news media.

Many argue the points that solar panels give off no pollution; the only pollution produced as a result of solar panels is the manufacturing of these devices in factories, transportation of the goods, and installation (which new technology and awareness is addressing).

Solar energy harnesses electricity in remote locations that are not linked to a national grid. (Am sure many African nations can relate to this wink) and some argue that the installation of solar panels in remote locations is usually much more cost effective than laying the required high voltage wires.

Solar energy can be very efficient in a large area of the globe, and new technologies allow for a more efficient energy production on overcast/dull days.

Solar panels can be installed on top of many rooftops, which eliminate the problem of finding the required space for solar panel placement.

Solar energy provides long term cost savings compared to grid connected power supply or the use of generators. (As we all know, how costly the latter can be, especially in areas with constant power disruption or non electricity power supply for long periods of time). Although the initial investment of solar power system may be seem slightly high, once installed, they provide a free source of electricity, which will pay off over the coming years.

The use of solar energy to produce electricity allows the user to become less dependent on the worlds fossil fuel supplies.

The production of energy from the use of fossil and some renewable fuels can be noisy, yet solar energy produces electricity very quietly.

Having raised many points in favour of solar Power, one feels obliged to raise points that should be considered and addressed by future generation, such as:

The initial cost of solar power which can make initial installation of solar power system costly, however this is gradually reducing with new technology and more competitors entering the solar energy renewals market.

Solar energy is only able to generate electricity during daylight hours. This means for around half of each day, solar panel are not producing new energy for your home/organisation but with larger energy storage batteries this point is easily combated.

Pollution levels can affect a solar cells efficiency therefore Solar power system needs to be approached from a holistic point of view of also reducing our pollution emission.

I hope this information raises awareness for change in our society.

Hi leo, I was browsing through the blogs and I saw your request. I am involved in the Solar energy industry and felt I should raise some points you probably may be aware of.

Aswell as solar panel, you are advised to use: sealed deep cycle solar batteries (they last longer), charge controllers, inverters and to fully benefit from the usage of solar power you are always adviced to opt for energy efficient products that consume lower wattage than the average products/appliances.

I can make a recommendations to you, if you still require particular product(s) suitable for Nigerian terrain, as well as give you valuable advice in regards to compatability and efficiency. my email address is blogs@isnhorizon.com

Hi, 1forall, apologies I didnt get back to you on time. I tried to retrieve your email from your profile, however, it doesn't give the option. I have a reader friendly detailed material that will give you clear understanding on building a sufficient solar system plus some advice on compatability. Drop me an email on blogs@isnhorizon.com.

you will require some components such as:

Solar module
Mounting system
Inverter
cables
battery (specific battery types)
Charge controller

you will require other additional components such as rcd sockets etc. it is key to understand which power level match.

Good luck, do send me a message if you require more advice on this and require a break down, I will send you a link and a how to step process
