He recently returned from injury and is Currently training with Werder Bremen first team. He is a regular starter for them when he is fit. Definitely better than anything we have now in that position. The risk is that he has never played against an African side in Africa so the physical side of the game and not so smooth pitch could be a massive factor. Bruno Onyemachi really bumped me up with that performance. Sometimes the best way to get a player refocused is to humble him.

The goalkeeper should have done better in that 3rd goal. I was not really all that impressed with him today. He had an ok performance. Bwene has now established himself as the backup for Ola Aina. Benjamin Frederick has now established himself as the starter partnering Calvin Bassey. Fernandez is good player. He made a mistake but he is a good player. His technical quality on the ball is solid.Solid backup for Calvin Bassey. The new leftback was OK. I don't think am yet sold on him but I will bring him in along with Felix Agu for the November qualifiers. Let Bruno sit this one out. He really need a self reflection after that atrocious performance he cooked up in GB. The Fulham youngster is a quality player. I saw some of the technical qualities in his game but he is not yet ready. He will come good but he is not better than what we currently have. The other midfielders did not impress me at all. Osuji actually outplayed all of them despite the fact he is a defender. Akor Adams answered the call today. He needed a redemption and he delivered.

Missing the World Cup and previous ones has been a curse and not a blessing, the more we continue to miss the World Cup our pool of quality players will continue to dip, I can bet you if we had been in the last 3 world cups consecutively we won’t have missed out on world class players like Olise and co. On Akinsanmiro, I have a feeling that Chelle does not rate him because leaving out a Serie A regular when we had a midfield crisis was sending a bad message. Chelle also possibly has no real idea how to utilise Akin just as how he is struggling to utilise Onyedika properly. And this is because the diamond is his bread and butter. His only tactical setup. Chelle has to diversify because our talents pool can be utilised in multifaceted ways alongside the Diamond he prefers.

While I can start listing names in a fantasy lineup, I must point out that we genuinely have a large pool of good/quality midfielders from the U23s to 23-24-25-26y/os and then the Veterans for me to just pick one sample based on my 3 main criteria pts for any formation, be it 4231, 433, 343/352 or even Chelle's Diamond.

I would love to see more of the candidates as the season progresses further because some potential strong candidates are under observation.

I would also love to watch the Russia game first to see what those young lads show and see how Chelle sets them up.

So no names listing for now. The 3pts I dropped already does the job of eliminating and installing the candidates that fit.

I would not want one player overburdened with defensive duties in a midfield 3. What is the need of a 3-man midfield if one still gets to do all the defensive work?

My selection would be based on player attributes and tactical balance. All 3 midfielders that meet the 3 main criteria below to a strong degree would be first choice selections followed by others who also meet these 3 on some solid measures or can meet 2 out of 3 with number 1, a must.

1️⃣High On-ball Technical Ability (Pass progressive, Pass range, Vision, press resistant, etc).

2️⃣Physical intensity (Also labelled as Athletic endurance, Stamina or Workrate. Can win duels, can impose himself physically, Decent speed, Press Resistance through ability to shove off challenges physcially, 2nd balls recovery).

3️⃣Spatial Intelligence/awareness (Ability to scan continuously in-game, continuously moving into gaps/spaces, also aids in press resistance).

As Coach, this is what will always guide my Midfield selections. There is real balance across board when the picks are made this way.

We saw it in full at Afcon 2023 held in 2024 where he was put alongside Iwobi. He made us not miss Ndidi one bit.

We have also seen it in friendlies vs Mozambique, Ghana, Russia and recently Portugal when he was paired with Onyedika.

Iwobi and Onyedika are ball-playing, ball-progressive, ball-carrying midfielders.
