TheGoodJoe: Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola insists that formations “are nothing more than phone numbers”.
The implication is that his players move from their positions so much that the stated formation they start in does not in fact matter. The players are so rarely in that shape that there is barely any need to name the formation. You're right |
Sports › Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Blueelf: 7:25pm On Jan 12 |
lexyman: Does Formation Really Matter in Football?
Formation matters in football, but it is not the most important factor on its own. Formation is a tool, not a guarantee of success.
What Formation Actually Does
A formation: Sets the starting structure of the team Defines player spacing (width, depth, and lines) Helps players understand their zones and responsibilities
For example: 4-3-3 → width, pressing, attacking play 4-2-3-1 → balance, control, smooth transitions 3-5-2 → midfield dominance, effective wing-backs
So yes—formation provides order.
Why Formation Alone Doesn’t Win Matches
Many teams use the same formation yet play very differently.
That’s because what matters more is: Player quality Roles and instructions Tactics in possession and out of possession Team chemistry and understanding Game management
A well-coached team in a “weaker” formation can easily defeat a poorly organized team using a “perfect” one.
The Reality of Modern Football
In modern football: Teams change shape constantly during matches A 4-3-3 in attack can become 2-3-5 A 4-2-3-1 in defense can drop into 4-4-2
What truly matters is movement, not just where players start on the pitch.
When Formation REALLY Matters
Formation becomes crucial when: Players don’t understand their roles Teams face clear tactical mismatches Coaches fail to adapt during the game The system doesn’t suit the available players
Using the wrong formation for your players is like assigning the right people to the wrong jobs.
my take: Formation matters for structure Tactics, roles, and execution matter more Players win games—not numbers on a tactics board
As Johan Cruyff implied: “Football is simple, but playing simple football is the hardest thing.”
I have never coached a professional team. But I know my onions—especially from football simulations.
On PlayStation, I apply tactical adjustments and switch formations mid-game to confuse opponents. These are strategic concepts I have mastered. You may argue that it’s “just a game,” but it is still a simulation—and in many cases, the same principles apply to real-life scenarios.
This is why I struggle with certain football arguments.
Finidi dragged us backwards tactically. Is he an authority? What significant success supports his theory?
If this were Guardiola or The Special One, I would have given it serious consideration.
But football respects ideas backed by results. so Finidi should go and sit down ... na so we for believe say this guys doesnt know how to play ,see wetin dem dey play now ? talk true e no give you joy ? You never see anything Na person dey twitter dey argue say its not Finidi's fault that we didn't qualify Lolll. I just left the guy. He's a blockhead Just ignore them |

JayromWrites: The match against Cameroon was so annoying. Like it was so glaring that he was bias. May God help Us This is the end of the road for Nigeria If una like, call God, CAF is a man-made competition amd there's no God there At least we've tried. We didn't ex0ect semifinal place. Let's be grateful for that at least |

Bassey and Osimhen should be warned
While we are enjoying 30s clips of bassey using his strength to bully players and kick them off, it won't be tolerated against Morocco. Red cards go surplus
Same warning to9 to Onyeka. The Moroccan strategy would be to ensure we are a man down and to do this early (in the first half). Bassey's hard tackling won't be tolerated. He's very prone to this and a bias refree will misconstrued his strength
I still see the Moroccans winning 2:1. We have done quite well but this is as far as the Supwr Eagles can go. The Moroccans will do all within thwer power to ensure they win this. The referee will never be on our aide amd you'll see the Nigerians conceeding a lot of free kicks in dangerous areas. Onyedika would do this amd it'll lead to a goal and he'll be vilified for a while like Iwobi
So, NGA 1: 2 Morocco

TheSuperNerd: Good point. This can be deployed too as an option. The idea is to go long from the back a few times bypassing the Moroccan final third/Mid block press. This is more likely when we are deep in our own half (if that be the case). Cameroon tried this in the first half and it didn't work Chelle must never use this tactic |

realpoacher: This is a good one
The only reason Morocco are favorites here is due to home advantage
The results on the field so far says a different story.
My prediction - Nigeria wins 2:1
.. Now this is data driven analysis I love this I said that if Morocco wins, it'll be due to officiating and crowd pressure The Morocco that played Cameroon looked ordinary. They could only score from two set pieces which the Cameroonian defence conceded due to lapse in concentration, not to forget that even 2 of Ibrahim diaz's goals are panalties |

comodo: One thing is sure. 1) They will still see Osayi as the weak link. 2) They will always try to close Iwobi down as quickly as possible.. 3) Osimhen will be kicked and provoked to get him out of the game. 4) Nwabali will be rushed once he gets a back pass I have this gut feeling that Ndidi's suspension is the blessing in disguise. 1) Osimhen will be captain and leader, therefore all the provocation will not yield any result because he will never want to let his teammates down. 2) Onyedika will be the nemesis of the Moroccans. Closing down on Iwobi from deep will give Onyedika room to operate. And from what I know, his passing range is not bad. He is also press resistant and better than Ndidi in that aspect. All SE need to do is hold on till 30mins, their will start gassing out. Unless they will concede possession to SE and rely on counters. Which will not help their matter. You'll make a very bad coach The Cameroonians tried this and conceded very early The best chance of SE to win is to keep playing thwir football as they've always played it even though I know Morocco will still loose |

I expect the game against morocc9 t9 be tough but I expect them to win because they have all the advantages - home, match officiating. They are also a disciplined and tactical side
Morocco will win but hopefully we get the bronze later |

9JAMac10: Calvin Bassey plays central defense like it’s a free role. classy Center Back entering his prime. He’s going to get even better. Anticipation, pace, power, aerial dominance, passing. He’s got the assets . Frightening potential Trust me, he is not even in his prime yet CBs generally peak late 20s till early 30s and even mid 30s (for those that keep fit physically and stick to strict diet regimen and a workout routine) |
