Car Talk / LEAKED: The New 2019 Mercedes G-wagon by Bmedels26(f): 3:50pm On Jan 05, 2018

Very few cars in this world can get away with continuing with the same design for decades. In fact, only the temporarily unavailable Land Rover Defender and the Mercedes G-Class spring to mind. The latter in its new long-awaited W464 iteration wasn’t supposed to debut until January 15, but somehow official images have emerged onto a Chinese site to show the G in all of its retro-flavored boxy shape.

As it’s clearly obvious from these grainy press shots, Mercedes hasn’t messed around with the exterior design as it’s simply a chip off the old block, which we can all agree is a good thing. The evolutionary design makes perfect sense given the heritage of the G-Class, a reputable off roader that has been around since 1979 with virtually the same exterior appearance.

While details about the vehicle’s size are not available at this point, it’s a known fact the new generation won’t be wider than the outgoing W463 model on sale since 1990. Even so, a significantly roomier cabin has been developed thanks to smarter packaging. Aside from providing more space, the revamped interior will get a technology infusion, but we’ve known that for quite some time.

Don’t let the oh-so familiar Lego shape trick you into believing the W464 is more of the same, because nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, the off-road prowess coming from the three differential locks, low range, and ladder-type frame is still there, but a good chunk of the hardware has been upgraded.

For example, Mercedes and AMG have teamed up to develop a new independent double wishbone suspension. Another relevant example would have to be the nine-speed automatic transmission with torque convertor. We could go on by mentioning the updated rigid rear axle, 360-degree camera system, 18-inch all-terrain tires, and other goodies.

New engines are also in order for the 2019 G-Class, but we will have to wait until the North American International Auto Show in Detroit to learn about them.

Meanwhile, feast your eyes on these leaked official images showing the exterior and refresh your memory about the already fully revealed cabin.

Car Talk / Would You Buy This 1991 Nissan That Is Faster Than A Bugatti Chiron For A $100k by Bmedels26(f): 2:47pm On Dec 30, 2017

See, there’s this lovely 1991 Nissan 300ZX up for auction alongside the Tokyo Auto Salon in January, with a five-speed manual transmission and, oh, just a few modifications. Japanese tuning shop JUN Auto got the car and took its 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 to 3.1 liters, modified the body, added turbos like you found on Porsche Group C cars to each cylinder bank and ultimately upped the car to about 1,000 horsepower

The 300ZX went to the Bonneville Speed Trials and hit over 261.9 mph, which, if we’re keeping count, is above what your precious Bugatti is capped at. The 300ZX was modified to be road legal once back in Japan, but the BH Auction listing says the engine is virtually the same as it was during the trials. The company expects it to go for between $71,000 and about $98,000, but it could always sell for more.

That’ll teach you to mock those weak five- and six-figure budgets, huh?

Of course, the Chiron can do more than 261 mph. Bugatti puts a limiter on the car at that number, which is below what its Veyron predecessor ran—267.8 mph without a limiter—in 2013. Bugatti test driver and Le Mans champ Andy Wallace doesn’t think the Chiron will go 300 mph without the limiter, because modern tires probably can’t handle the pressure of that speed.

But why spend $3 million on a car with a speed restriction, anyway? This 300ZX will give you all of its power and tuner pride, for about $2.9 million less.

Car Talk / Why Is The Porsche 911 Called 911? by Bmedels26(f): 12:55pm On Dec 30, 2017
If you’re a fan of the simple, no-fuss naming scheme utilized by Porsche, you have Peugeot to thank. In a short and sweet informational video, the German automaker outlined the history behind the legendary “911” badge.

As the video enumerates, production was winding down on the 356, making room for a newly minted six-cylinder sports coupe. Porsche called its newest entry the 901, and ordered up a batch of gold nines, zeroes, and ones for the model badging in preparation for a full-scale launch.

At the 1963 Frankfurt auto show, Porsche proudly presented the new 901 coupe to the world. Peugeot wasn’t pleased the French automaker had semi-official rights to automotive numeric nameplates with zero in the middle. It had already sold quite a few models using this naming scheme, so it sent a “friendly but distinct” letter to Porsche requesting the 901 be changed to something else.

So, Porsche sliced the zero out of the equation and added a one, creating the 911 badge we know and love today. Despite the change occurring so early in the production process, at least 85 901s left the assembly line before the zero was stricken from the record. These were all allegedly produced for internal testing purposes, but a few slipped out to customers over the years.

Car Talk / Lexus Fans!! 2018 Lexus Rx450h Is Way Cheaper Than The 2017 Model by Bmedels26(f): 4:45pm On Dec 29, 2017

The dawn of a car model’s new model year often means a slight increase in price across the board. Sometimes, though, a company goes the opposite direction, and in the case of Lexus, goes way in the opposite direction. For 2018, Lexus slashed the base price of the RX450h hybrid by $7,340 versus the 2017 model for a total of $46,690. The price reduction isn’t only for the normal RX450h, the F Sport version sees a major decrease of $4,090 for a new starting price of $53,400.

The purely gasoline-powered Lexus RX350 line doesn’t get the same deep discounts for 2018. They actually increased in price, but only slightly. Normal RX350s, both front- and all-wheel-drive, are $50 more this year. The same goes for the F Sport versions of the RX350.

The RX line also will get a new longer version with a third row seat. Pricing has yet to be released for the longer vehicle. But we know it isn’t higher or lower than 2017 since there wasn’t a long version that year.

Car Talk / Father Of The Mazda Rotary Engine Has Died by Bmedels26(f): 9:47am On Dec 28, 2017

Kenichi Yamamoto, the father of Mazda’s rotary engine who later became the boss of the company, has died at 95, reports Japanese Nostalgic Car. His story is one of the most fascinating in all of the automotive world.

Yamamoto was born in Hiroshima in 1922, and according to Automotive News, graduated from Tokyo Imperial University in 1944. From there, he co-managed an airplane factory during the War, and returned home at the urging of a letter from his mother in September 1945, one month after Japan surrendered.

Upon arriving in Hiroshima, he found his home destroyed, his younger sister dead, and his father displaying signs of radiation sickness. To support his family, he took up a job at Toyo Kogyo, a local truck and artillery maker that was one of the few companies to survive the bombing of Hiroshima. Yamamoto started as a factory worker building transmissions, but within two years, was promoted to management and began work on a new engine for Toyo Kogyo’s three-wheeled truck, which was sold under the Mazda brand.

Toyo Kogyo released its first real car, the Mazda R360 in 1960, and in 1961, began a technical partnership with German automaker NSU, which was developing the rotary engine for production car use. Yamamoto was put in charge of a team at Mazda that later became known as the 47 Samurai, who developed rotary engines. In 1964, Mazda presented a prototype of the Cosmo Sport, a two-seater powered by a twin-rotor engine. It’s not an exaggeration to say that this is the car that ensured Mazda’s future.

In the 1960s, Japan’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) determined that Toyota, Nissan, and Isuzu would be the country’s sole carmakers. That didn’t prohibit Toyo Kogyo from making cars outright, but it made doing so extremely difficult. Yamamoto used the Cosmo Sport and its innovative technology to convince the MITI to give Toyo Kogyo’s Mazda a shot. Thankfully, it worked.

The Cosmo Sport reached production in 1967, becoming the first road car with twin-rotor power, and Yamamoto and the 47 Samurai continued development of the rotary. Mazda put rotaries in nearly every car it sold during the 1970s, but the engine hit its stride in its RX series of sports cars. The original RX-7 of 1978 cemented the rotary’s place in the automotive world, and helped Mazda become a major player in the US market.

Yamamoto rose up Mazda’s ranks, becoming its head of R&grin in the late 1970s, president in 1985, and chairman in 1987. In 1978, Bob Hall, then a journalist with Motor Trend and later Autoweek suggested to Yamamoto that Mazda build a two-seat roadster in the classic European style. Three years later, Hall joined Mazda as a product planner in California, and Yamamoto suggested that he start research into his two-seat roadster.

When he became president in 1985, Yamamoto set the wheels in motion to get the Miata into production. Hall, along with engineer Toshihiko Hirai and designer Tom Matano then got to work making their sports car a reality.

Under Yamamoto’s leadership, Mazda saw its greatest motorsport achievement—outright victory at Le Mans in 1991 with the four-rotor powered 787B sports car. To this day, Mazda remains the only Japanese automaker to win the race, and the 787B is the only non-piston engine car to do so. Yamamoto retired from Mazda a year later.

Today, Mazda doesn’t offer a rotary-powered car, but it still has a team dedicated to researching this engine type. And, the spirit of Yamamoto and the 47 Samurai is echoed in the company’s new Skyactiv-X engine, the first gas-powered production-car engine to use compression ignition. And of course, the Miata is alive and well today, with over a million units sold.

Yamamoto helped save and defined the soul of Mazda, and while he may be gone, the company once known as Toyo Kogyo lives up to his ideals.

Sports / Giggs Rules Himself Out Of Running For Swansea Job by Bmedels26(f): 3:38pm On Dec 21, 2017

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has ruled himself out of the running for the vacant manager's job at Premier League strugglers Swansea following the dismissal of Paul Clement.
With the Swans looking for a third boss in less than 12 months, Giggs had been talked about in relation with the role along with Ronald Koeman, Tony Pulis and Louis van Gaal.
Giggs was asked if he was interested in managing a club he was linked with before Bob Bradley was appointed in October 2016.

"No. I've spoken to them before, last time before they appointed Bob Bradley," Giggs told Sky Sports.
Giggs said the sales of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente in the summer had weakened the Swansea squad.
"I don't know, I'm not in the club but obviously over the years (it has been) a really well-run club, (who) play the right way and are an established Premier League team," said Giggs.
"But it's tough now, you see the teams down there. It gets tougher each year. They lost good players, didn't they? They lost Sigurdsson, they lost Llorente, and probably never replaced them. That's always a problem."
Giggs served as caretaker boss at Manchester United in 2014 following the sacking of David Moyes and was assistant manager under Van Gaal.
But despite being linked with a number of jobs, he has not managed to find a role since leaving United in 2016.
Clement saved Swansea from relegation after being appointed in January but his departure was confirmed less than 48 hours after the 3-1 loss at Everton on Monday -- Swansea's ninth defeat in 11 games.
Swansea on Thursday announced that long-serving midfielder Leon Britton, who has been part of the coaching staff, had been put in caretaker charge and would oversee Saturday's match against Crystal Palace.

Car Talk / Man Put Up His Super Car For Sale For 25 Bitcoins by Bmedels26(f): 2:09pm On Dec 16, 2017

A seller, located in Atlanta, Georgia, is offering up a new McLaren 720S on Craigslist for 25 BTC – lowered from the 30 BTC they were originally asking. The seller specifies that he’s not interested in letting the car go for cash, “bitcoin ONLY” the listing states. At 25 BTC, that works out to just about $420,000 at today’s exchange rate. With a starting price of $284,475, the 720S pictured here is a bit pricier than the average going rate – but we doubt some supercar-seeking Bitcoin millionaire is really going to care.

The supercar is finished in a signature Azores Orange paint job, with 10-spoke alloy wheels, electric and heated seats, a performance trim, a stealth pack, and sports exhaust equipped. If you’re in the area and you want to see the car in person before dishing out the whole 25 BTC, the seller is asking that you transfer over .00001 BTC to confirm the appointment, which works out to about $.20.

Of course, it doesn’t matter how you pay for it, the McLaren 720S still a lot of car for the money. Under the hood lies a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 good for 710 horsepower (529 kilowatts) and 568 pound-feet (770 Newton-meters) of torque, allowing for a 0-60 mph 96 kmh) sprint of just 2.8 seconds, on to a top speed of 212 mph (341 kmh).

Car Talk / Uber Apologizes For Charging A Rider Over $14,000 For A Few Minutes Ride by Bmedels26(f): 10:19am On Dec 13, 2017
An Uber rider in downtown Toronto was charged 18,518 Canadian dollars, or about 14,378 American dollars, on Friday for a ride that was five miles and 21 minutes long. All just a mistake, Uber has said.

The mistake, apparently, was with the driver, an Uber spokesperson told the CBC.

Uber says the ride in question took place in a traditional taxi cab signed up to the ride hailing service — an option available to customers in Toronto — and that the driver made a mistake when entering the details of the fare into his cab’s meter.

The refund only came after someone who said they were a friend of the passenger tweeted out the receipts.

https://twitter.com/emilykennard/status/939534163564253187

What I sort of can’t believe is that the passenger initially agreed to pay the money at all, necessitating the refund. Paying fourteen grand with the hope that you’ll be able to settle up later with Uber takes some faith.

Car Talk / Homeless Man Gets His Wish Granted After Helping A Stranded Motorist by Bmedels26(f): 6:43pm On Dec 07, 2017

A homeless veteran called Johnny Bobbitt Jr,A who gave his last $20 to a stranded motorist last month, has now purchased a new home and a 1999 Ford Ranger thanks to money raised by the woman he helped.

Kate McClure was stranded and alone on the side of I-95 one night in Philadelphia after running out of gas. After pulling off to the side of the road, McClure was approached by Johnny Bobbitt Jr., a homeless man, who instructed her to stay in her locked car while he walked several blocks and spent the only cash he had on him to get her gas.

Bobbitt Jr. served in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked as a paramedic before becoming homeless, as he says, through bad decisions and circumstance, according to the Associated Press (via TIME).

McClure was unable to repay him at the time, instead deciding to set up a GoFundMe campaign for Bobbitt Jr. with the target goal of $10,000 to put toward an apartment. The campaign went viral and raised nearly $389,000 in 25 days, instead. The money will now go into two trust funds, one that will deposit money to a bank account every month for Johnny to use, and another that serves as a retirement account.

Bobbitt Jr. has purchased a house, a computer and a truck, and wants to donate to people and groups that have helped him in the past, according to updates to the GoFundMe page.

The GoFundMe features plenty of photos from Johnny’s past life, as well as his new one if you’d like to check it out and feel a little better about the world.

Car Talk / Concepto X Render : Lamborghini Releases Photos Of Their Newly Designed Concept by Bmedels26(f): 10:00am On Dec 06, 2017

The artist behind this creation is Milen Ivanov, and he’s done his homework when it comes to capturing the essence of a Lamborghini. Lots of edges and contrasting angles? Check. Big air scoops? Absolutely. No perceived way of getting inside? We’ve got it. Spoilers and wings galore? Not only is that massive front splitter spot-on, but the rear diffuser looks like it could plow a field, and there are even winglets on the front fenders. Could they possibly serve any legitimate function? We really hope not, because that makes them even cooler.

It gets better. The rear engine cover with the sculptured vents totally reminds us of the Lamborghini Diablo. The wheels are obviously straight from the Countach. The front clip screams Aventador. And with the roof scoops and steeply raked rear glass likely making outward visibility theoretical at best, this car has pretty much everything we could possibly want in a bonkers Lamborghini.

We’re being absolutely serious here. This Lamborghini Concepto X design from Ivanov is crazy, and off-the-wall, and completely awesome. It strikes a very difficult-to-find balance of eccentricity with something that could still be a functional car. And just look at it – even without the badge on the nose it would only take one look to know this is a Lamborghini. That’s also not so easily done.

Ivanov has quite a few designs in his Bēhance.net portfolio, including a very cool Vespa Fly that, next to the Star Wars Hoverbike, would be a top choice for hover-scooting around town. We recommend checking out all the designs, but the Lamborghini Concepto X is our favorite by a wide margin. Well done, Mr. Ivano.

Car Talk / Top 6 Facts You Should Know About The Lamborghini Urus by Bmedels26(f): 9:47am On Dec 05, 2017

Lamborghini has finally revealed its second SUV in history. The road-oriented vehicle has a 641-horsepower twin-turbo V8 and highly creased body panels. There are plenty of interesting factoids packed into its four-door shape. We highlight the most interesting of them, here.

It’s named after a breed of cattle. Though many Lamborghinis have been named after specific fighting bulls, this one is named after an entire breed. The extinct breed is called urus, or sometimes aurochs, that is closely related to Spanish fighting bulls of today.

It’s the first Lamborghini with active roll control. When a car gets tall and heavy, it wants to lean a lot more when cornering. To counter that, Lamborghini fitted the Urus with an active roll control system to help keep the body flat going through turns. It’s also one of a number of technologies meant to improve handling, such as adaptive damping, rear-wheel steering (borrowed from the Aventador S) and torque vectoring on the rear differential.

It has huge wheels and brakes. Standard wheels on the Urus are 21 inches, but for those with a desire for bigger dubs, there are optional 23-inch models. These wheels are stopped by standard carbon ceramic rotors. The fronts are 17.3 inches in diameter, and the rears are 14.5 inches.

It has the best weight-to-power ratio of any SUV. Besides having the highest claimed top speed for an SUV, and acceleration on par with the 707-horsepower Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, Lamborghini claims the Urus has the best weight-to-power ratio of any SUV on the market. That ratio, with the SUV’s roughly 4,850 pound curb weight and 641 horsepower, is 7.57 pounds per horsepower. It is worth noting that the aforementioned Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is still close with a ratio of 7.59 pounds per horsepower.

It can be mostly rear-wheel drive, but not fully. The big Lambo is all-wheel-drive all the time, with its Torsen center differential providing a default torque split of 40 percent to the front, and 60 percent to the rear. This can change all the way up to 87.5 percent to the rear depending on conditions, or it can shift 70 percent of the torque to the front.

Its chassis is all steel and aluminum. Unlike the Lamborghini’s sports cars that use extensive carbon fiber in the chassis, either for the passenger cell in the case of the Aventador, or for reinforcement as in the Huracan, the Urus has a steel and aluminum chassis.

Car Talk / How To Diagnose A Failing Alternator by Bmedels26(f): 7:34pm On Dec 04, 2017

You turn the key, and instead of firing up the engine, all you hear are rapid clicks. “My battery is dead!” Or is it more complicated than that? The same situation could happen again with a new battery, if you miss signs of a failing alternator. Here are the several clues yours could be going out and what you can do about it.

HOW AN ALTERNATOR WORKS

The alternator is basically how a vehicle seems to have an endless supply of electricity. It takes a lot of juice to start an engine and meet all the various electrical needs of a vehicle. While different batteriescan have enormous capacities, eventually the headlights, heater, stereo, nav, and infotainment would all drain the battery of power.

An alternator charges the battery while the vehicle is running by turning mechanical energy from a spinning pulley into current. The rotor, brushes, and other internal parts of an alternator wear out over time, so replacing it is something everyone eventually needs to do. The following symptoms should give you an idea of what’s gone wrong, but if you’re still not sure, you can always bring your vehicle to Advance Auto Parts for a charging and starting system test.

BAD ALTERNATOR SYMPTOMS:

Dim lights

The failing alternator symptom most drivers recognize is dim or flickering lights. This is really obvious when headlights are on at night but also noticeable in dash lights and the center dome light. If the lights brighten as RPMs pick up, that’s even more of a sure sign.

Service engine light

Another obvious sign is the one your vehicle tries to tell you. This varies by the model, but when the alternator starts to let go, it can light up a “Check Engine,” “ALT,” or a battery icon indicator.

Odd noises

The serpentine belt could have stretched with age and may not be spinning the alternator pulley effectively, leading to a lack of charge. This typically results in a squealing noise. On the other hand, the internal bearings can wear out, causing a growl or grinding noise.

Electrical issues

Electrical vehicle equipment, like power seats or windows, may be slow to operate. Without enough power, sometimes the device will not function or will suddenly stop working, like the radio turning itself off.

Engine stalling

If the engine suddenly cuts while driving, it could be an alternator issue. Fuel injection needs a good amount of electrical power, and without it the engine quickly stalls.

Dead battery

Without a functioning alternator, the vehicle quickly uses up all of the battery’s capacity, leaving it drained. Pop the hood and check the battery, and you might think you’ve found the culprit. A fresh battery and a malfunctioning alternator, however, will quickly leave you stranded again. Here’s what to do.

TOOLS NEEDED
:

Multimeter

Safety Glasses

Code Reader (optional)

HOW TO DIAGNOSE A FAILING ALTERNATOR

If you have a “Check Engine” light, connect a code reader to the diagnostic port. If you find code P0562, you very likely have a failing alternator (note that codes may vary by vehicle make/model/year). Get it checked out, before it fails entirely.

If you suspect a failing alternator but don’t have a warning light, pop the hood and check the condition of the belt. If it is glazed and slightly burned looking, that is an indication that it is slipping. The belt is too loose, so it slips on the pulleys instead of traveling along them. The metal-on-rubber friction heats up the belt, quickly wearing it out. Adjust the tensioner to get the belt just right (too tight can also damage an alternator’s bearings), or just replace the serpentine belt since it is among the most affordable car parts you can buy, and it’s a quick and easy repair.

If everything looks good under the hood, grab your multimeter. Make sure the vehicle is parked on level ground with the parking brake on and wear your safety glasses. Set the meter to 20V DC and connect the leads to the battery—positive lead to positive battery terminal and negative lead to negative terminal. It should read around 12.6 volts.

Start the engine and carefully check voltage again. This time it should be at least 14.2 volts if the alternator is healthy and charging the battery. If voltage is good, turn on the headlights, interior lights, radio, heater, and any other electrical load. The meter should still display above 13 volts. If any of the voltages are below spec, it’s a strong case for a new alternator. Check all your cables for corrosion or a loose connection. If there are issues, stop by your local Advance Auto Parts store to get replacement parts you need.

Nairaland / General / Man Steals Ferrari But Gets Arrested After Begging For Petrol Money by Bmedels26(f): 9:17am On Dec 04, 2017

A suspected Ferrari thief was arrested after he was found begging for money to buy petrol, police said.

Israel Perez Rangel denies stealing the $300,000 car, despite allegedly not knowing how to fill the vehicle up.

Police in Santa Ana arrested the 38-year-old after spotting him begging for money to put petrol in the 458 Spider.

Officers noticed the supercar was trashed, with cracked fins, a destroyed gearbox, emblems torn from the engine and body and missing paddle shifters.

There was also vomit caked on the side, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The car was stolen two weeks earlier from the Ferrari & Maserati of Newport Beach service centre in Costa Mesa after a worker left the key on a passenger seat, authorities said.

CCTV footage showed a man dressed in a Ferrari jacket walking onto the car park and taking the vehicle.

Police were alerted to reports of a Ferrari driving erratically and stopped at a junction.

Officers also received a call about the driver asking for petrol money, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

Rangel allegedly fled when police arrived but was later found and arrested behind bushes near a Holiday Inn, police said.

He has pleaded not guilty on November 3 to felony charges of vehicle theft with a prior felony conviction of driving or taking a vehicle, grand theft auto with a prior conviction, and vandalism, the Times reported.

He also faces a possible sentencing enhancement on allegations of theft over $200,000, according to Orange County Superior Court records.

The Ferrari owner was able to claim insurance and used the money to buy a 2018 Lamborghini Huracan, the Times reported.

Among performance-car enthusiasts, Steve Saleen is a legend.

He has been associated a variety of cars but is probably best known for the Saleen Mustangs — Ford muscle cars modified to tear up the track and make a statement on the street — in the 1980s. His company also built the S7, a supercar.

Now Saleen Automotive is back with a new supercar, the Saleen 1 or S1, that he showed off on Thursday at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

It’s another swoopy design with impressive performance numbers. Saleen says the two-seat car will have a turbocharged 450-horsepower four-cylinder engine that will be combined with low weight to give it rocket-like acceleration. It is expected to go from zero to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds. Top speed will be about 180 mph.

But what will really set the Saleen 1 apart is price: About $100,000, Saleen said. That’s a far cry from many supercars that can cost double that or more.

Saleen says he hopes to start production at his Southern California plant by late next year. He wants to build about 1,500 cars, then Saleen Automotive’s Chinese affiliate, Jiangsu Saleen Automotive Technologies Group, will start production for worldwide distribution.
Saleen says he’s as excited about this one as he has been about any of his projects.

“It’s like a race car,” he said. “You’re only as good as your last race.”

Car Talk / Toyota To Use Cow Feces (shit) To Power Cars And Homes by Bmedels26(f): 11:18am On Dec 02, 2017

Let us consider cow feces as a resource — not to fertilize crops, but as a way to one day power electric- and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.

That’s the vision of Toyota Motor North America, which is … bullish … on hydrogen as a future energy source for consumer vehicles. It announced plans at the L.A. Auto Show to build the nation’s first commercial-scale 100-percent renewable power plant in California, using manure from dairy farms in the state and capturing its methane to generate water, electricity and hydrogen.

The Tri-Gen plant, projected to come online in 2020, will be located at the company’s operations at the Port of Long Beach, where Toyota is testing its zero-emissions hydrogen fuel-cell semi truck on daily runs of around 200 miles.

Toyota expects the plant to generate around 2.35 megawatts of electricity and 1.2 tons of hydrogen per day, enough to power the equivalent of nearly 2,350 average-sized homes and meet the daily driving needs of 1,500 vehicles. In addition to supplying the Project Portal proof-of-concept drayage trucks, the plant will fuel up new Mirai sedans being offloaded from Japan through its on-site hydrogen fueling station, one of the largest in the world.

“Tri-Gen is a major step forward for sustainable mobility and a key accomplishment of our 2050 environmental challenge to achieve net zero CO2 emissions from our operations,” Doug Murtha, Toyota North America’s group vice president of planning, said in a release.

The plant is based on a pilot project developed by Fuel Cell Energy, the U.S. Department of Energy, various California government agencies and the University of California at Irvine, according to Forbes.

Toyota says there are now 31 retail hydrogen filling stations open in California. It has a partnership with oil company Shell to open more
stations.

Car Talk / JOHN CENA Sued By Ford For Selling Super Car Worth $500k by Bmedels26(f): 9:55am On Dec 02, 2017

John Cena is on Ford’s Black book for allegedly flipping his new $500k ’17 Ford GT — violating a contract with the company — and they’re takin’ him to court.

According to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Michigan, Cena was “selected from thousands of applicants for the opportunity to purchase the Ford GT.”

Ford says Cena signed a deal in which he agreed to hold onto the car for at least 2 years … prior to unloading it.

However, Ford claims, soon after receiving the car, Cena flipped it for a big profit.

“Mr. Cena has unfairly made a large profit from the unauthorized resale flip of the vehicle, and Ford has suffered additional damages and losses, including, but not limited to, loss of brand value, ambassador activity, and customer goodwill due to the improper sale.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJhEK0E8E4Q

Ford is demanding that Cena hands over all the profit from the sale, as well as other damages.

According to the suit, for his part, Cena told the company he sold the car, along with other property, to pay bills.

Car Talk / Machine Vs Life: Formula E Car Versus Cheetah Drag Race by Bmedels26(f): 5:44pm On Nov 29, 2017
Formula E recently set up a race between one of its drivers, the Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne, and a cheetah. The race took place a landing strip in South Africa. I’m here to report that the cheetah lost.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-9oFxYFODE

Cheetahs, as you probably know, are the world’s fastest land mammals, capable of reaching speeds of up to 70 mph. A Formula E car, which is a machine built by humans, is capable of a top speed of about 139 mph. The cheetah, though, has much better acceleration, besting the Formula E for a bit in the beginning, before finally being overtaken.

Car Talk / 10 Things You Should Never Say To A Car Dealer by Bmedels26(f): 10:01am On Nov 28, 2017

Straight to the point

“I DON’T REALLY KNOW MUCH ABOUT CARS.”

Good salespeople know their products well and a dealership’s staff is excited and ready to sell you a vehicle. Indicating that you do not know much about cars is a clear signal to the sales staff that they hold most — if not all — the cards during ensuing negotiations. Do thorough online research before setting foot on a car lot so you have as much knowledge about the vehicle as possible. Being informed about the car you intend to buy will put you in good stead for getting a fair deal without feeling ripped

“I’M JUST LOOKING . . .”

Car salespeople simultaneously hate and love these three little words — it’s likely the phrase they hear most, and it is a rote response that indicates a customer wants a salesperson to remain at a distance. Salespeople understand you are “just looking,” otherwise you would not be on the lot. And they sell more cars at optimum prices to people who are “just looking” than to those who are well informed and ready to talk specific models, packages and pricing. So don’t say it. Open with questions that demonstrate you know something about the car(s) in which you are interested. The salesperson’s answers will also reveal how much they know about the automaker’s products and you can determine if the salesperson is a good fit for you.

“I’M PAYING CASH.”

You should let the salesperson know this when negotiating the final price of the car, not up front. After all is said, negotiated and done, you might be able to swing a slightly better deal if you are writing a check to the dealer today (might being the operative word

“MY CAR JUST DIED SO I REALLY NEED A NEW SET OF WHEELS.”

Don’t indicate to the salesperson that you are desperate for a car. If you do, you will open the door for the salesperson to convince you to settle for a car that might be less (or more) than what you really need because of the time crunch involved. Stay neutral throughout the purchase process. If you are the type of person who gets emotional during a major purchase such as this, do yourself a favor and rent a car for a couple weeks while you take your time shopping for the right car.

“I REALLY LOVE THAT CAR — AND I HAVE TO HAVE IT!”

See previous section. Showing your cards to the dealer too early signals that you are emotionally attached to a particular vehicle and — human nature being what it is — the salesperson then thinks you can be led by the nose to the deal they want you to have, not the deal you want to have.

“I KNOW MY TRADE-IN IS NOT WORTH MUCH . . .”

Despite the realities of the old clunker you drove onto the dealer’s lot moments ago, telling the salesperson right off the bat that your car isn’t worth much is a no-no. During negotiations let the sales staff determine the trade-in price of your vehicle. Have a general idea of your car’s worth beforehand by consulting third-party sources such as KBB.com, AutoTrader.com and NADA guides. That way you won’t be too surprised to discover your 1982 Crown Vic with 175,000 miles, mismatched fenders and no back seats is not worth the tires you drove in on . . . but you never know, they might be feeling generous . . .

“THIS IS MY FIRST NEW CAR PURCHASE.”

Nervously signaling — in a joking manner — to not only the salesperson and everyone within earshot that you are a neophyte when it comes to car purchases seems like a fine and benign thing to do. However, it does put you at a disadvantage when it comes to how much pressure and upselling the salesperson might do given this bit of information. It is best to stay neutral about the process, ask some astute, relevant questions about the vehicle you’d like to purchase and see how things progress. As The Gambler says, you gotta know when to hold ‘em .

“ALL CAR DEALERS ARE SWINDLERS, AND I DON’T WANT TO BE RIPPED OFF.”

No matter how you might feel about car salespeople or dealerships, keep it to yourself. Most car dealers and salespeople are NOT shysters, so don’t cop an attitude and treat them rudely thinking that staying “on your guard” will get you the best deal. Be civil, ask questions, learn about the car you intend to buy and, by being observant, learn what makes the salesperson tick.

“I NEED A MONTHLY PAYMENT OF NO MORE THAN . . .”

The dollar amount of a monthly payment is only one factor of the car-buying equation. A salesperson can give you a monthly payment and still build profit via other means, such as the total number of payments or an underestimated trade-in value. Before visiting a dealership, determine what you can comfortably afford based on your monthly budget and your online-researched trade-in value then negotiate from there.

“MY CREDIT IS NOT THAT GOOD.”

If you let this bit of information slip right away, you are putting yourself at a psychological disadvantage to get the best deal possible. If your credit is less than stellar, make sure you shop around for the best interest rate — often credit union rates will beat conventional banks, so try there first. If you must finance through the dealer, do so as a last resort and pay attention to the loan details, especially the number of years and final purchase price. The salesperson will try to get you the highest interest rate possible, since the dealership will get a cut of the pie if you finance through their lender. Knowing your credit rating ahead of time and having financing set up puts you in the driver’s seat, no matter what your rating.

Car Talk / Check Out The New Mercedes A-class 64-colour Ambient-lit Interior by Bmedels26(f): 8:12am On Nov 28, 2017

Car interior design is taking a serious step away from old-fashioned black or granddad’s favourite beige. Inside the new Mercedes A-Class it’s a coloured light extravaganza

Mercedes has released a set of pictures showing the interior of the new A-Class, and it’s what my wife would call jazzy.

Lovers of ambient lighting and shiny things will be all over the options list, by the looks of things. Strips of lighting run the full width of the dashboard, along the door trims and beneath the centre console

These strips can display up to 64 colours and project 10 mood programmes. We wonder if there’s one for ‘WTF.’ There are even colour-illuminated rings on the air vents, which themselves resemble concept car alloy wheels. It’s all quite intricate and designed to give a, err, more emotional feel. Interpret that how you will.

The trademark Mercedes door-mounted electric seat controls remain. The rest of the switchgear looks to be borrowed from existing models, too, and there’s plenty of leather and contrast stitching to indulge in.

The once-divisive, now-commonplace tablet-style screen is much bigger than before. The two 10.25-inch-wide screens you can see in the pics will be standard on high-end models, with twin 7.0-inch screens the base offering and a halfway house featuring a smaller and a larger one together.

We also now know that the new car’s boot has been boosted to 370 litres, which is definitely less rubbish than before and is helped massively by a redesign of the rear lights, widening the previously size zero loading aperture by 20cm. There’s better visibility thanks to slimmer pillars all round.

Car Talk / How Toyota Turned A Sienna Into The World’s Most Bad-ass Minivan by Bmedels26(f): 10:11am On Nov 24, 2017

Back in June, Toyota first showed the world this wild-child Sienna, which it dubbed Ultimate Utility Vehicle. Since then, the former minivan turned beastly off-roader has been touring the country as part of the company’s Ever-Better Expedition, sort of a team-building exercise. Now it’s pulling in to SEMA—its natural home, one might argue—and we’re finally learning more about its build.

We already knew that this sinister Sienna sits atop the chassis of a Toyota Tacoma pickup. Obviously, the nerdy sliding doors are replaced by motorized side doors. The fronts have been converted to suicide doors. The matte-black body is nearly all custom, including the front fenders and all four doors. The unique front bumper is by the folks at N-FAB, who also fitted the front winch mount and side step. The custom roof rack features an LED light bar.

The Engaged suspension components raise the former Sienna more than four inches from stock and allow for more than 15 inches of wheel travel. Those wheels are 22-by-12-inch Monster Energy 539B Off-Road units, wrapped with 33-by-22 Nitto Mud Grappler tires. The vehicle also includes a TRD supercharger and a Wilwood brake kit.

Inside the fully customized interior, a 2500-watt JBL audio system rocks the house, while a night-vision camera system lets occupants keep tabs on the world outside.

Despite Toyota’s impending move to Texas, don’t expect to see the company turning out Sienna minivans like this one any time soon. Toyota describes it as “a one-of-a-kind vehicle, not intended for sale.” Which means the pick-up line at school is safe—for now.

Car Talk / Aston Martin Vantage GTE Race Car Unveiled by Bmedels26(f): 10:11am On Nov 22, 2017

Though Aston Martin had more than enough news in revealing the new V8 Vantage, it decided it needed to show one more thing: the Vantage GTE race car.

Obviously the body work is based on the road car, but it’s more aggressive. It has an even bigger version of the V8 Vantage’s massive grille. The hood gets extra vents. The exhaust now exits out the front fenders. And, of course, it gets a huge wing and equally monster diffuser. The interior is quite a bit different, though, with the comfy seats and leather trim gone in favor of a roll cage and bare carbon fiber components.

Under the skin, there are some similarities to the regular V8 Vantage. The main connection is the Vantage GTE’s engine, which is a version of the same 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged AMG V8 found in the road car. It makes more power than the street version with at least 530 horsepower. Torque is roughly the same, though. Instead of an eight-speed automatic, the Vantage GTE uses a six-speed sequential manual transmission. Both cars use double-wishbone suspension front and rear, but the GTE gets adjustable anti-roll bars and Ohlins adjustable shocks. The brakes are also upgraded to six-piston front calipers and four-piston rear calipers from Alcon.

It will start racing in the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2018.

Car Talk / This 10.8-mile Ford GT Could Be Yours by Bmedels26(f): 9:55am On Nov 22, 2017

A car is only ever new once, and some owners try to keep that feeling as long as they possibly can, such as with the above 2006 Ford GT. The car will be offered by RM Sotheby’s at the company’s Fort Lauderdale auction, and it astonishingly has just 10.8 miles on the odometer. With so few miles, this car practically is new, despite being over a decade old.

To complete the like-new feel, the car still has the original plastic wrap that covered the leather seats. And the tag around the shifter warning drivers that the car is low and could scrape and be damaged. The engine bay is thoroughly clean, too. RM Sotheby’s also notes the car is nicely equipped with optional stripes, painted brake calipers and forged BBS wheels.

We admire the current owner’s remarkable restraint to keep from piling on the miles with this car. We’d be daily-driving it and then some, if it were our car. But on the other hand, we can’t help but feel that the owner really missed out on something by never driving it. At least he’ll have the car’s high value to make up for it. RM Sotheby’s expects the car to sell for between $300,000 and $350,000. These numbers almost identically reflect the $307,000 to $348,000 valuation from Hagery Insurance. But for bargain hunters, there’s the slim chance it goes for less, since the car is being offered at no reserve, which means whatever the highest bid is, it takes the car home. Those interested in purchasing the car could check out

the auction in April 2018
