Maserati has filled out its Levante family with a Ferrari-powered version of its SUV.

Revealed at the New York motor show, the Levante Trofeo will sit above the diesel Levante and the V6-powered Levante S that has recently gone on-sale in Australia when it arrives in local showrooms early next year.

Unique to the Trofeo, it is powered by a version of the 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 that’s also used in the new Ferrari Portofino roadster and the mid-engined 488 GTB sports car.

In the Maserati, it produces 440kW and 730Nm and is hooked-up to an all-wheel drive transmission, giving it the ability to rocket from 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 300km/h.

Part of that comes from a new Corsa driving mode that brings a race-style launch control function, as well as opening the exhaust system to produce a thundering soundtrack, tightening the suspension for greater body control and adding more weight to the steering for a sportier feel.

Mitsubishi has given its family-hauler a mild makeover.

The Japanese brand has upped the safety credentials of the Pajero Sport by adding autonomous emergency braking as standard across the range along with adaptive cruise control.

Mitsubishi is also adding a five-seat GLS variant to the range, which joins the entry-level GLX as the other smaller format option along with the existing seven-seat GLS and Exceed variants.

The new GLS five-seater is priced from $48,500 (17.4m) before on-road costs. All other models have seen a slight price increase with the entry-level GLX now costing $500 more at $45,500 (16.3m), the seven-seat GLS is $1000 more expensive at $49,500 (17.8m) and the Exceed is hit with a $650 price rise bringing it up to $53,650 (19.3m).

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the second-generation G-Class at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit earlier this year. It’s the first redesign the model has received since its launch in 1979. The two may look the same, but underneath is a thoroughly modern chassis, while the entire package is loaded with all the latest tech you would find elsewhere in the Mercedes lineup, like a full suite of safety equipment and the company’s double-screen dash.

However, the new model won’t arrive until later this year, meaning you still have a chance to get your hands on the last brand-new, first-generation G-Class. Shoppers will have their choice of three models, the regular G550 and the AMG’s double-trouble offerings, the G63 and G65 AMG. The G550 and G63 both sport one of Mercedes magnificent twin-turbocharged V8s while the G65 escalates things substantially with a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12. More than likely this is going to be the last time the G-Class will even be made available with a V12. Mercedes even has a special Final Edition G65, only 30 of which will come to the United States.

There’s also a Manufaktur Red and Black Edition package, which can be ordered with any G-Class. It features Magma Red paint with black accents on the outside and black leather with red contrast stitching on the inside. The AMG pair also get an available Mojave Package that adds Olive Magno exterior paint along with Saddle Brown leather and carbon fiber bits in the cabin. The G63 will be made available with an AMG Performance Studio Pack that offers the same interior, but with a Monza Grey exterior. Pricing wasn’t announced but expect the starting price to start close to the $123,325 figure of the 2017 model.

Porsche says it won’t offer electric vehicle owners access to a free charging network. Instead, the German maker of fine sports cars says it expects its new fast charge network to generate a profit. From day one of Stuttgart’s involvement in the electric vehicle space, it will charge for electricity at a similar price to what it costs drivers to refuel their cars with gas.It’sa move that puts them squarely at odds with Tesla, which used free access to a national network of Superchargers as a springboard for popularity up until recently.

Following Porsche’s annual press conference in Stuttgart, Germany, Lutz Meschke, deputy chairman of the executive board was asked by GearBrain if Porsche’s electric car chargers will be operated as profit centers. Yes, we want to earn money with the new products and services. Of course. Yes.” He then contrasted the business model withTesla’s. “You can not run things like this, you have to earn money from these services.” It’s unclear how clear how defined Porsche’s pricing strategy is at this point, but we should see the plan fully galvanized out before the company starts delivering its electric cars in late-2019.

Already, we know Porsche will install 800-volt electric car chargers at its dealerships which will eventually be capable of delivering 250 miles of range in just 15 minutes. Porsche will also sell home chargers to Mission E buyers and the company has partnerships to set up charging stations established in both the U.S and Europe. The first Porsche EV will be in the same vein as the Mission E concept car, a four-seat, four-door sports car with two electric motors, all-wheel-drive, more than 600 horsepower and rapid acceleration. The second EV will be based on the same platform and arrive similar in style to the Cross Turismo concept the company showed off at the Geneva Motor Show.

Toyota makes numerous vehicles one would readily associate with the legendary Paris-Dakar rally, but the Prius might not come to mind as the first choice for the Sahara Desert. But that’s the car a Japanese team chose for their 4,350-mile adventure.

Team ACP is a privateer team, which has taken part in the Paris-Dakar numerous times. In 1981, ACP’s Kiichiro Yokota became the first Japanese driver to reach the Dakar finish line, driving a production Land Cruiser FJ60; in 1987, the team won the marathon class of modified diesel vehicles. It goes without saying the ACP drivers are no strangers to Dakar or the Sahara, and their Prius drive retraced the route they took to prepare themselves for the first rallies almost 40 years ago. The team has also tested Priuses on several continents in varying conditions starting all the way back in 1997, when the first generation was released.

As you can see from the photos above, yes, the team mostly kept the Prius Prime on the asphalt, and they did have a Land Cruiser as a support vehicle. But still, they (sometimes literally) pushed the Prius to places it was perhaps never designed to go to, yet it made it to its Dakar destination in one piece. And some of the car’s features definitely came in handy, as the crew was able to use the Prius as a power source to heat up food and tea-making water.

Porsche isn’t letting Audi have the spotlight, especially when it comes to flying cars.

Although the two companies both fall under the Volkswagen Group, they’ve always had a friendly rivalry, especially when it comes to Le Mans. And now it appears Audi’s collaboration with Italdesign and Airbus on flying cars has Porsche intrigued.

The sports car maker is in the early stages of designing a blueprint of a flying taxi, saying that it believes “three-dimensional mobility” is the way of the future. “There’s another dimension out there that is completely empty without any traffic jams,” said Porsche sales chief Detlev von Platen. “So why shouldn’t we develop something in this direction?”

The company expects it will take up to 10 years to finalize the technology before it can launch a flying car in real traffic

Recently at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, Audi, Italdesign, and Airbus unveiled the latest version of their flying car concept called the Pop.Up Next (seen above). Mercedes-Benz’s owner, Daimler, has also expressed interest in flying cars by investing in Germany’s Volocopter, which is developing a five-seater electric flying taxi.

China’s Geely, which owns Volvo and Lotus, also acquired U.S.-based Terrafugia and is expecting to deliver a flying car to the market next year.

When Lamborghini announced it was making an SUV, enthusiasts weren’t too happy about it.

But now Lamborghini is proving why the Urus is important to its lineup, and why Ferrari is following in Lamborghini’s footsteps with an SUV of its own. Speaking to CNBC, Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali said sales and orders for the new Urus have been “terrific,” and that the reaction of the customer is “really fantastic.” This is despite its hefty starting price of around $200,000.

According to Domenicali, Lamborghini will end 2018 having produced around 5,000 units and more than 1,000 of those will be the Urus. By the end of next year, the Italian automaker will be producing around 8,000 units and more than half will be comprise of the Urus.

He added that 70 percent of Urus buyers are new to the Lamborghini brand, but even more surprising, is how many buyers are women. The model is selling well in Russia and India, along with other other markets with bad roads, where the typical Lamborghini sports car doesn’t fare well.

So there you have it. No matter how upset you may be that Ferrari and Lamborghini are making SUVs, an automaker’s main goal is to make money. And well, SUVs are currently making money.

Stupidity exists on an endless spectrum. This boundless field can make it difficult to accurately measure just how half-witted someone or some act can be. There are people who don't wear a seatbelt or will text while driving. Those acts are stupid because they put people at risk of injury, be it yourself or others. There are also people like 25-year-old Jonathan Rivera. According to the Associated Press, Rivera showed up to court in Hartford, Conn., to answer a charge over a stolen car — and got there by driving a stolen car.

Rivera was charged with first-degree larceny and tampering with a motor vehicle. That theft occurred back in February. While Rivera was at court talking with a judge about that charge, parking officers were scanning license plates in the courthouse parking lot. They spotted a car that had been reported stolen, so officers waited for a driver to return. Police say Rivera was arrested as he tried to drive away.

Two new charges were added — second-degree larceny and taking a motor vehicle without the owner's permission. Maybe he's going for a hat trick, or, if he wants to keep things simple, steal a car straight from the courthouse parking lot.

The tipping point for wide acceptance of convertible crossovers is coming, and Volkswagen will soon throw another few thousand pounds on the scales. The People’s Car maker launched the standard T-Roc in Europe last November and says it has 40,000 orders on the books already. With VW predicting crossovers will comprise 40 percent of company sales by 2020, the T-Roc cabrio will be one of the 20 crossovers the carmaker plans for sale globally to satiate demand.

We get the feeling Volkswagen’s laid out a biennial grooming program to get us ready for the announcement. The original, Golf-sized T-Roc concept teased us with a two-panel targa top at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. Two years later, VW figured we were ready for a conceptual take on the full monty, so it brought the truly convertible, Polo-sized T-Cross Breeze to Geneva. Two years later, we get the news that the dreamy curiosity is going into production. Two years hence, we’ll have it.

Based on the design sketch posted with the press release, it looks like the production unit will come with a fabric soft top, same as on the Range Rover Evoque Convertible. Don’t fret if you’re keen on this distant nectar; this will be the Volkswagen Group’s first convertible crossover, but it certainly won’t be the last, and VW could be saving the U.S. market for a hardtop convertible Audi crossover.

The carmaker says it will invest around $98 million in updates at its Osnabrück, Germany plant to build the T-Roc cabrio, with preliminary plans calling for up to 20,000 units per year

It’s a known fact that more and more automakers are beginning to move away from diesels in the aftermath of the messy scandal at the Volkswagen Group in order to focus on hybrid and electric vehicles while making gasoline engines cleaner. It looks like Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is also jumping on the eco-friendly bandwagon by deciding to discontinue diesel engines from all of its passenger cars across the group. It won’t happen right away, though. Citing sources close to FCA, Financial Times says the diesel engines will be dropped by 2022.

While the Italian-American marque hasn’t issued an official response to the report, it is believed the decision has been taken as part of a new four-year plan programmed to be unveiled on June 1. It’s difficult nowadays for automakers to develop diesel engines that comply with the stricter regulations regarding emissions, prompting more and more companies to invest the money elsewhere, particularly in electrification and gasoline engines.

Corroborated with a lower demand for diesels in Europe (market share dropped by 8 percent to 43.8% in 2017), it’s easy to understand why the diesel is on its way out. It’s also worth mentioning that because of the new Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure, industry experts are estimating costs with development will rise by 20% to make diesels WLTP-friendly.

But the diesel won’t be retired altogether by FCA as the plan is to keep it alive in commercial vehicles. Interestingly, FCA was the only large car manufacturer in Europe to post an increased share of diesel sales in 2017 compared to the year before, with 40.6% (up by 0.2%) of all FCA cars delivered on the old continent being powered by a diesel engine.

There’s more to the stink bug than the fact it smells pretty terrible. Especially if you’re shipping cars to New Zealand from Japan, and a stink bug infestation throws a spanner in the works.

New Zealand authorities are doing their best to keep invasive foreign species out of the island nation’s eccentric eco system, and to protect their farming industry. They have enough bothersome possums and rats, and stink bugs are especially unwelcome in the eyes of Kiwis. The insects reproduce quickly and with their resistance to pesticides, they could devour New Zealand crops.

That brings us back to the cars. Three cargo ships, carrying new and used Japanese cars “of every make and model” were discovered to be full of stink bugs, and it will take a good while to sort it all out. Talking to CNN, David Vinsen, CEO of New Zealand’s Imported Motor Vehicle Industry Association, said he had never seen a situation as serious as this. On the cargo ships are more than 10,000 vehicles, which will have to be properly treated before they will be let into the country. Some 8,000 cars are still waiting to be loaded into ships in Japan. Already, 95 percent of imported Japanese vehicles go through approved facilities to weed out any biohazards; in the future, the NZ government will require all used vehicles that come in from Japan to be cleaned and inspected. The same goes for used machinery.

With the importation process ground to a halt and no new stock available, the car industry workforce will see layoffs or cut working hours unless the matter is rectified soon – while personnel cleaning out buggy cars will have their hands full. “People are concerned about their jobs”, said Vinsen, “So we need to get this matter resolved as quickly as possible.”

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport took the wraps of its 2018 Formula 1 car at the Silverstone International Circuit in England. The defending champs call the F1 W09 EQ Power+ its “most advanced machine” ever conceived and predict that it will become the fastest Mercedes-AMG F1 car ever.

It’s described as an evolution of last year’s race car, which driver Lewis Hamilton drove to a fourth-consecutive title. The most significant change is the addition of the Halo cockpit protection, per new F1 rules, plus the omission of the monkey seat and high T-wings. But it maintains the 2017 W08’s general design principles, with the same wheelbase and a slightly increased rake angle. The livery is based on the 2017 livery with more accentuated lines. There’s also four of them — one for each championship Hamilton has won.

The new EQ power unit — and name shared with Mercedes’s future electrified models — was also developed to meet new rules limiting the number of times power unit components can be changed per driver per season without grid penalties.

“The biggest challenge we’ve got is lifting our durability limit with the challenge of racing just three engines per driver per championship and two ERS systems,” said Andy Cowell, managing director of Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains, in a release. “That’s a 40-percent increase in the distance that the hardware needs to do for this year compared with last year. We’re focused on trying to increase the life of the hardware without losing performance.”

The team also sought to improve the packaging of the powertrain — a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 with two electric motors — plus combustion efficiency and hardware friction reduction.

Hamilton returns for his sixth season with Mercedes-AMG and is joined again by Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas.
