LocalFARMERS: No chemical needed except herbicide for weed control. Fertilizer can be added only when your land is not fertile. Or when you notice that your Ginger leaves is not dark green Thumbs up for all these information. Which herbicide do you use for weeds control and whichtypeof fertilizer should be applied if Ginger isn't dark green? Plus how many months before harvest? |
Agriculture › Re: I Did Not Harvest A Single Ginger From This Ginger Farm Due To Disease Outbreak by Bobbyjay001(m): 6:11am On Sep 23, 2024 |
LocalFARMERS: Ok. Get ready to buy your Ginger seedlings. Ginger is usually harvested around October and November. During that period, Ginger is usually cheaper. I will advice you to buy the quantity you will use as seedings.
You will store your seedlings in a cool and dry place. Cover the seedlings with leaves. The seedlings will beging to germinate before the time you will plant it.
Farming of Ginger starts from the first rain of every year. By then your seedlings must have shown several signs of germination. One Ginger can produce 4 or more seedings. Each Ginger seed will have signs of germination at some parts of the Ginger. As seen in pictures 1 and 2 bellow. You will cut the Ginger into different pieces. If a particular Ginger have 5 signs of germination, that means you will cut that particular Ginger into 5 seedlings. Each germinating part makes a seedling.
Ginger is usually planted during the first rains within a particular raining season. Plough the field thoroughly with either a tractor or manually agricultural plough. Ginger is usually planted in a straight line. To achieve this, you will use a hoe to create a straight ridge hole from one end of the farm to another end. About 2 foots from the first ridge, create a similar ridge from the one end of the farm to the other end. Repeat this in the entire farm.
Lay your Ginger seedlings in the ridge hole created. Ginger are usually placed close to each other. The distance between each seedlings depends on the choice of the farmer and availability of seedlings. This is similar to what is seeing in picture 3. Cover the Seedlings with sand.
At this stage, you are required to cut some branches of trees, Shrubs to cover the entire farm. This is to protect the seedlings from excessive heat from the Sun. You know that, after the first rain in some raining season, the rain usually take some time before the raining season starts proper. During that rain break, if the farm is not covered with leaves, the heat from the Sun will affect the ginger seedlings and it might never Germinate.
Few weeks after the planting process, your Ginger will start growing as seen in picture 4. If your land is not fertile, you will need to add fertilizer maybe ones. However, if your land is fertile, you don't need to apply fertilizer Thanks for this sir. What chemicals like fungicides, insecticiand fertilizer are to be added? |

LocalFARMERS: Thank you I will love to tutor you on Ginger farming. However, I don't know if Ginger will be good for your type of Soil. Ginger doesn't grow well in some kind of Soil.
There is a reason why Southern Kaduna are the largest Ginger farmers in Nigeria. The reason is their kind of soil is good for Ginger farming.
I will advise you use a small portion of ur farm to experiment your Ginger farm. I can explain to you on when to plant your Ginger and the entire process that is involved. Thank you and God bless you for your prompt response. It's a delight and privilege meet someone like you online, who despite all that just happened, is willing to share his knowledge with a total stranger. God will continue to bless you for that. I am willing to start small and use small portion of my available land to test the viability of ginger in my location. Besides, I met a guy here last year, who testified that our soil is okay for ginger farming. He's based in Osun State but I recently changed phone and lost his contact. Thanks once again. I am willing to learn and know what it takes to be a successful ginger farmer. I want to opt out of tomatoes farming. It's oversaturated and I made lots of loss this year due to draught and glut. God bless you richly. |

Please, can you give me free tutor on how to cultivate ginger successfully especially in Southwest? I am based in Akure to be precise. Your efforts shall never be in vain bro. Take heart.
