PoliticsKemi Vs Shettima: Facts Are Sacrosanct - Punch Editorial by Bobloco(op): 1:55am On Dec 21, 2024
VICE-PRESIDENT Kashim Shettima’s attack on Kemi Badenoch after her comments on Nigeria is typical of the country’s leaders. They are hostile to criticism and denythatfacts are sacrosanct. It is one reason Nigeria remains comatose. Shettima should stop exchanging words with Badenoch.

Born in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents and raised in Lagos till she returned to the UK at 16, the leader of the British Conservative Party has spoken freely about her Nigeriandispleasures.

The fire began ragingafter she recently described Lagos as “where fear was everywhere” and “almost everything seemed broken.” Badenoch recalled, “Neighbours scream as they are being burgled and beaten…and wondering if your home will be next.” She rememberedthat her brother’s personal belongings were stolen. She escaped from Nigeria in 1996 at the height of Sani Abacha’s brutal military dictatorship.

In return, Shettima lashed out at Badenoch, saying she was “denigrating her nation of origin” and that “she has even every right to remove the Kemi from her name.”This is uncalled for. The VP called Nigeria “the greatest black nation on earth”though the evidence is hard to see.

Nigeria is the ‘Giant of Africa’ with a clay foot.

Shettima is not alone. In 2004,Olusegun Obasanjo, arguably Nigeria’s best president since 1999, cursed hip-hop star Eedris Abdulkarim after the artiste released a song, Jagajaga, detailing the country’s general disorder, violence, and the ordeal of the common folk. Afrobeats star Davidohas also come under fire for his candid opinions about Nigeria’s woeful profile.

Nigeria’s leaders hate such candour about the country. They call it de-marketing Nigeria and rather prefer to play the ostrich. The world is an open market, and everyone can see what each country is up to.

In 2016, British Prime Minister David Cameron told Queen Elizabeth III at an event to mark her 90th birthday: “We’ve got some leaders of some fantastically corrupt countries coming to Britain…Nigeria and Afghanistan, possibly the two most corrupt countries in the world.” What a shame! Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index on Nigeria agrees.

Shettima must think beyond Kemi Badenoch
Rather than vilify her, President Bola Tinubu and his government should address the issues Badenoch raised. The exit of multinationals and the closure of local companies highlight that Nigeria is not working. The electricity grid has collapsed for the 12th time in 2024. In contrast, power is steady in Tanzania. South Africa and Egypt generate 58,000 megawatts each.

The rich send their children overseas for education because the public school system is broken. Muhammadu Buhari and Tinubu are recent examples of Nigerian presidents who do not entrust their health to local hospitals because the system is wretched.

Migration is a healthy, old global practice but in Nigeria, it has become an escape from horror. Insecurity has worsened since Badenoch’s days in Nigeria. Islamic terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and other gun-toting non-state actors roam free in large swathes of the country.

Farmers pay hefty levies to cultivate their land or to harvest their crops.Badenoch “does not couch her words, and says it as it is,” as her spokesman says. This makes Nigerian leaders uncomfortable.

There is a sense that the government is not working for the people despite the taxes and levies imposed on them. They generate their electricity, which is now threatened by high fuel costs. They sink their boreholes and create their home security systems. With the shabby public school system, many pay through their noses to send their children toprivate institutions.

People like Badenoch who speak out about Nigeria’s miserable state are not the enemy; they want the best for the country. Nigeria’s leaders are the country’s biggest de-marketers.

They should curb their outlandish tastes and fancies and not take such criticism personally.

PoliticsCourt Nullifies APC Congresses In Rivers by Bobloco(op): 12:34am On Dec 21, 2024
A Rivers State high court sitting in Port Harcourt has nullified the congresses of the All Progressives Congress in the state.

The court nullified the congress which produced Chief Tony Okocha, following a contempt of court proceeding filed by the camp of the reinstated chairman of the party in the state, Chief Emeka Beke.

The court had earlier issued an order stopping the conduct of the congresses in the state, but the APC went ahead to hold the exercise.

The embattled members of the party, who had secured the order, had returned to court, notifying it that the party had conducted the congresses despite the valid court order.

Justice Godswill Obomanu, after listening to the presentations and submissions of the counsel, nullified the congresses of the party.

Justice Obomanu expressed dismay at the party for going ahead with the congresses after a court had ordered that status quo be maintained in the matter.

He held that what the APC in the state did was trying to steal a match from the claimants.

The court stayed further proceedings in the matter and adjourned indefinitely.

It is the foolishness of you people to sit at home out of fear that made ipob members to continue thier atrocities. So until FG security killed those terrorists, you people will still be sitting at home on Mondays. Una too fear joor. It can't happen in south south or south west, when someone not even in Nigeria will be directing and commanding alot of people with few of his boys to kill people. Seyi makinde went so hard on those so called Yoruba agitators. Sunday Igboho was taught a lesson.
The sit-at-home protests in the Southeast have never been, and will never be, out of fear.

They are a form of protest against bad governance, the killing of indigenous people of Biafra, and, more importantly, a way of demanding the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has been unjustly incarcerated.

If the people of the Southeast decide to engage in street protests, security agents will go on a killing spree. Therefore, the only way the people of the Southeast can protest and remain safe is by sitting at home.

The Igbos are the bravest tribe in Nigeria. It has been said and proven that anywhere you go and don't see an Igbo man, know that place is unhabitable. It takes bravery to survive anywhere.
CrimeYoruba Elders Lament Rising Cases Of Ritual Killings In South West by Bobloco(op): 1:42am On Dec 20, 2024
IBADAN —YORUBA elders under the auspices of Kaaro Oojiire ÌmÍ Oodua Foundation, KOOOF, yesterday, expressed worry over the rising cases of ritual killing and body parts harvesting in the South West.

The Yoruba elders, in a statement by their Vice President/Diaspora Counsel, Gbenga Adewusi, wondered how cases of human decapitation and harvesting of human bodies have now become a daily occurrence.

Adewusi said: “The recurrence of the activities of those involved in the human ritual in the Southwest is indeed a shameful episode that should no longer be ignored and or swept under the carpet by all stakeholders in Yoruba land.

What makes the news alarming is the regularity of the sordid and inhuman activities, and the various types of people involved – from Muslim imams to Christian pastors, from teenagers to old and young men and women.

“If urgent actions are not taken it will ultimately affect the peace, tranquillity, progress, and development of the Southwest because no investor wants to invest in an area where citizens are regularly and gruesomely murdered to harvest their body parts.

“The current evidence gleaned from news reports indicate that the majority of those caught by the security services have been Muslim Alfas and Christian pastors. However, this simple fact is not an excuse to exonerate the Yoruba people from the menace of ritual killing because all those caught by the authorities were mostly sons and daughters of the Southwest soil.”

While condemning the act, KOOOF insisted that something urgent needed to be done to bring the scourge to a halt.

“We are all aware that there is a false narrative about ritual killing in the Southwest. The false narrative is that ritual killing is practised by the traditional Yoruba religious believers. This false perception is neither supported with available evidence nor is far separated from the truth.

“We, members of KOOOF boldly state that there is no money ritual at all. Those engaged in ritual killings for money are not practising the authentic Yoruba tradition.”

Politics‘You Can’t Suspend Us’ – Edo LG Chairmen Dare Okpebholo, Assembly by Bobloco(op): 4:15pm On Dec 18, 2024
The 18 suspended local government chairmen in Edo State on Wednesday dared the State House of Assembly, insisting that they can’t be suspended or removed from office.

DAILY POST reported that the council chairmen were on Tuesday suspended for two months by the House over alleged misconduct.

The lawmakers took the decision while acting on a petition by Governor Monday Okpebholo against the council chairmen.

The LG chairmen, under the aegis of the Edo State chapter of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria, ALGON, kicked against their suspension at a press briefing in Benin City.

Newman Ugiagbe, the chairman of Orhionmwon LGA, who briefed the press, stressed that their purported suspension by the House of Assembly on Tuesday, December 17, 20204, was a violation of court orders.

Ugiagbe, who is also the Edo State chairman of ALGON, said the tenure of the council chairmen who were sworn in on September 4, 2023, would only come to an end in 2025.

He posited that their purported suspension from office by the State House of Assembly was unconstitutional, ultra vires, null and void, and of no effect whatsoever.

According to him, the Edo State High Court had in suits filed against the state government and the House of Assembly ordered the defendants not to dissolve the democratically elected council executives on or before the expiration of their three-year tenure.

The state ALGON chairman averred that the association on December 17, 2024, served a reminder on the Speaker of the House, to inform him of another suit numbered B/3070s/2024, instituted against the governor, Okpebholo.

He said in the suit, the state High Court 2, granted the chairmen an interim order restraining the defendants from interfering with, obstructing, and disturbing the claimants of exercise of their constitutional rights over all assets and funds allocated to them from the Federation Account.

He added that the courts restrained the defendants from suspending, removing, redeploying, meddling, or in a manner interfering with them in the administration and management of their councils.

Ugiagbe further referred a Supreme Court judgment in a case between the Attorney-General of the Federation and that of Abia State and 36 others where the apex court removed the powers of the 36 state governors and House of Assembly, or acting through their privies, to dissolve or interfere in local government administration or management by using state powers derivable from laws enacted by the House of Assembly or (anyhow so-called or executive orders/other actions (anyhow so-called).

From the foregoing, the 18 Local government elected in the election of September 2, 2023, and sworn into office on September 4, 2024, remain the executive chairmen of our respective local government councils and we are going on with our constitutional responsibility as the chief executive officers of our councils.

“From the foregoing, it is given that the action of the Edo State House of Assembly on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, in response to the request from Governor Monday Okpebholo, suspending the chairmen/ vice chairmen is ultra vires and therefore a nullity because it is based on nothing in the eyes of the law. It is also a contempt against the orders of the courts,” he said.

Ugiagbe called on security agencies, and other institutions of government saddled with the responsibility of enforcing law or order to protect all assets and buildings of the local government councils.

He requested the deployment of security personnel to all 18 Local government secretariats in defense of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, that is being allegedly impeded by the Edo State House of Assembly.

Ugiagbe noted that the deployment of security personnel would help to create an enabling environment for the smooth discharge of the functions for which they were sworn in as duly elected political office holders.

DAILY POST recalls that the Edo State House of Assembly had on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at the plenary suspended the 18 Local government chairmen and their deputies following a petition written against them by Governor Monday Okpebholo.

The governor had in the petition accused the council executives of insubordination and gross misconduct.

He alleged that the council chairmen refused to submit the financial account statements of their various local governments to the State Asset Verification Committee.
