richmond500:
So yesterday someone from worldbank talked about the reforms and most of us had to explain it the way we understood, but here is my take.
What WB said was that, "what Nigeria is doing is what Norway did and today their GDP per Capita is above $100k, twice that of UK and bigger than that of USA, it's no different from it but for us to reap the fruit of this, we need to stay on this course for another 10-15years to be able to get an economy that will match those of developed nation, but there will be pain from inflation, he also said we tried it in 2003-2007 but we didn't sustain it while Norway sustained their reforms, he also talked about how the Nigerian oil wealth used to benefit only the elites.

So we have another time again to choose between long term goals and short term goals. The long term goals has great benefit in the future but excessive suffering will come first while the short term goal will help us put food on our table today but Nigeria might collapse in the future."

The big question now is, can Nigerians endure the hardship?

The hard part is that we need these reforms, even if Tinubu fails, another govt will push it down our throats in the future, Nigeria cannot survive without it.

It's not about Tinubu now.
It's about Nigeria, if u are listening to economists, u will understand how we needed it badly.
So if he fails and we reverse it back, another govt in the future will shove it down our throats cos without it, Nigeria is sure to collapse.
But Tinubu and his allies sponsored, funded and organized protests and civil disobedience against the Goodluck Jonathan government over this same subsidy

End result of voting in leaders and allowing our leaders to run an economy based on oil and oil alone.

When oil crashed in 2014 , that should have been the chance to run some sane economics.

Apc had a chance to change the paradigm. They failed.Instead they borrowed to keep the facade up. Even the changes they are making now are because there isn't enough money to hide the cracks.

Anyway, we shall see. Right now, the mess is too great..

PoliticsINEC Must Be Unbundled Before 2027 – Obidients by Bobloco(op): 7:20pm On Oct 14, 2024
The Obidients Movement, a group comprising supporters of Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 elections, has advocated electoral reforms to ensure a free and fair election in 2027.

Yunusa Tanko, coordinator of the movement, stated this in Lagos while speaking at the Labour Party stakeholder meeting organized by Hon. Seyi Sowunmi, a Labour Party member in the House of Representatives.

According to him, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is overwhelmed with a lot of responsibilities, and the Uwais Electoral report should be adopted to pave the way for free and fair elections in Nigeria.

He said, “The electoral reform is supposed to address who becomes the chairman of INEC, knowing fully well that what is happening now is state capture. Already, INEC, not the police, has been captured. We are talking about INEC, which may soon announce a new chairman if the office of the incumbent elapses.

“We are also discussing the judiciary, which has been captured in a way. What we are interested in is an electoral reform that can provide free and fair elections for all Nigerians, irrespective of religion, tribe, or origin. When the electoral reform is corrected, we may finally achieve the credible elections we want.

“Remember, we have always been advocating that the Uwais Electoral report should be made sacrosanct because it states that INEC should be unbound to three entities: electoral enforcement agencies, a delineation commission, and the electoral body itself.

“As we speak right now, INEC is overwhelmed with work. We need to have this electoral process unbundled, meaning that anyone who will be INEC chairman should be chosen through a transparent process where the judicial council selects and nominates for the President to appoint. We don’t want the current situation where things are hidden, allowing the President to dictate who he wants. We, the Obedients, will seriously advocate for Nigerians to have free and fair elections.”

On the party’s internal crisis, Lagos State Labour Party gubernatorial candidate during the 2023 elections, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, stated that every political party in the world has its challenges.

He said, “There is no political party without its issues. Politics is a contact sport. You see what’s happening with the APC, and the same goes for the PDP. We have our challenges in the Labour Party, but what matters most is that we are willing to come together. We are seeking a political solution to our issues, and this activity today is about bringing everyone together.

“It’s a celebration because every time you hear about the Labour Party recently, it seems to be in a negative light, as if we are always fighting. But today, we are not fighting. We are happy, we are united, and that is the purpose of what we are doing here today. In the end, we don’t want to win any victory if the house is divided. A divided house can never stand.”

PoliticsLagbaja’s Soldiers Still Above The Law - Punch Editorial by Bobloco(op): 8:21am On Oct 14, 2024
YET again, Nigerian soldiers have shown that they believe they are above the law. The latest act of savagery occurred when soldiers from the Ojo Cantonment Barracks in Lagos, led by a colleague driving against traffic, brutally attacked and killed a police inspector, Saka Ganiyu, who was simply doing his job.

The incident reeks of lawlessness. The police officer stopped a soldier in mufti who was driving an unregistered commercial bus against traffic. Instead of obeying, he disregarded the officer. In the altercation that ensued, the soldier’s colleagues trooped out of the barracks and attacked the police team. This is brazen lawlessness by the soldiers.

This incident is part of a disturbing pattern in Nigeria, where soldiers have repeatedly acted as though they are untouchable, meting out violence to anyone who dares challenge them, even fellow law enforcement officers.

It is unconscionable that soldiers, who are meant to protect the country and uphold its laws, continue to engage in lawlessness and brutality. The killing of Ganiyu (an inspector), while trying to enforce traffic rules, exposes a serious issue within the ranks of the Nigerian military: a deep-seated culture of impunity.

The Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja, must take full responsibility for this lawlessness. Under his leadership, the Nigerian Army has again shown that it lacks discipline and respect for the rule of law. Soldiers, emboldened by a system that rarely punishes them, continue to terrorise civilians and fellow security personnel.

This is not the first time Nigerian soldiers have unleashed violence on police officers in Lagos. In August 2022, another police officer, Monday Orukpe, was brutally tortured to death by soldiers in the Trade Fair area of Lagos. The guilty soldiers faced no meaningful retribution. It was a brutal reminder that the Nigerian Army operates under a separate, self-imposed set of laws.

The problem starts at the top. President Bola Tinubu, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, must do more than offer token condolences after these brutal acts. His silence in the face of such barbarity is a stain on his administration.

Lagbaja must answer for the actions of his soldiers. He cannot absolve himself of responsibility by claiming ignorance or promising “investigations.” Under his command, the Nigerian Army has continued its long history of brutality, unchecked violence, and disregard for civilian and police authority.

The families of Ganiyu and Orukpe, and countless other victims, deserve justice. It is not enough for the military to detain the soldier responsible for Ganiyu’s death. The entire chain of command that allowed this culture of impunity to fester must be held accountable. There must be a public trial of the soldier(s).

The Nigerian military must implement far-reaching reforms to ensure such incidents never happen again. Soldiers need to be properly trained, not just in combat, but in respecting the law and the rights of citizens. The Army must establish stricter disciplinary measures to deal with rogue elements within its ranks.

Also, there must be clear and enforceable punishments for soldiers who violate the law. These punishments should not be limited to internal disciplinary actions but must include public trials and sentencing. This will send a strong message that the era of military impunity is over.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government must strengthen civilian oversight of the military. This includes creating an independent body that can investigate and prosecute soldiers who commit crimes against civilians or other law enforcement agencies.

This culture of impunity must end. Tinubu and Lagbaja must act swiftly and decisively to restore discipline within the ranks of the Nigerian military. If they fail to do so, they will have blood on their hands — the blood of innocent civilians and police officers whose lives were cut short by those who swore to protect them. Enough is enough.

Tinubu is not a democrat. He is a demagogue who for years masqueraded as a democrat. Today, he represents the greatest single danger to genuine democracy in Nigeria since 1960. Beside him, Gen Sani Abacha suddenly looks like a boy scout. Clearly, with Tinubu, Nigerians are wrestling “not against flesh and blood but against principalities… in high places.”

Of course the UN is aware of all the human rights violations being perpetuated by his principal. The UN is also aware of his role and that of his principal in the killing, maiming, and destruction of lives and property of people believed to be from a particular ethnic group during the last general election because of their democratic choice.

nairalanda1:
Well, not to defend t-pain, but the fact is, years of defending the currency left us with a very limited amount of money, most of which has been chopped by debt service.

Unless this government can start diversifying the economy, something I see them not being serious about right now, we are not going to improve our forex earnings, and means of defending the naira.

And taking loans to do so, is not going to make things better...we would just be pushing the evil day further. Like Bhari and initially t-pain.
