It's no longer news that Atiku has emerged the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, after polling the highest votes from the delegates with Nyesome Wike of Rivers state coming in second. The question still remains if the peoples Democratic party will be able to wrestle power from the ruling All Progressive Congress. In elections in the past, the south-east and south-south have always been the stronghold of the main opposition party(PDP) since democracy returned in 1999. In the 2019 general elections PDP had an average of 75.30% of the total votes cast in the south-east and over 56% of the votes cast in the south-south; leading up to the 2023 general elections, things have taken a different turn and alot of factors have come into play, with Peter Obi (Atikus' running mate in 2019) and Abaribe( former senate minority leader) leaving PDP and moving to the labour party and APGA respectively,Ekweremadu(former deputy senate president) being unhappy and the silence from the quarter's of Wike since missing out on being PDPs' preferred candidate may mean that all is not well. All these different turn of events may cost PDP votes in it's stronghold in the south eastern and south-south regions of the country and may in turn coat them the presidency. Political analyst have projected that in protest against another northern presidency, with the APC likely candidate being Tinubu and the renewed calls for people to vote based on issues and the movement it has generated-both on and off social media- Southern Nigeria might likely opt for a third force which Peter Obi's Labour party provides. This leaves the PDP in a dire situation because even if this third force doesn't end up taking over power from the APC, it may end up costing the PDP the votes it needs to wrestle power back from the APC. They always find a way of tarnishing the man's image and the image of ndi Abia as if there own states are better. Any pics of bad road they see, they tag it Abia. They wouldn't see the roads he has built and the things he has done and commend him for that. 1 Like |
