20 December 2022

A social activist and financial expert vying for Oyo South Senatorial District seat in the forthcoming general election, Adewale Aderinto, has vowed to use his vast knowledge of public and private administration to bring desired development to his domain if provided the opportunity to serve.

Aderinto, who is seeking the senatorial position on the platform of Action Alliance (AA), made this assertion in a communiqué issued on Monday by his campaign organization.

The grassroots politician and community leader said his vision is to deliver a people-centered leadership that will rejuvenate and propel Oyo South to greater heights.

According to the senatorial hopeful, he will leverage his wealth of experience in the financial sector and cordial relationship with major stakeholders to address problems facing communities across the territory.

"My vision is to bring about a vibrant, prosperous and greater Oyo South. When elected as Senator, I will work assiduously to ensure that the entire district is taken to an enviable height," Adewale Aderinto promised.

He finally urged eligible voters in all the nine local government areas of Oyo South to support his quest to emerge victorious at the senatorial election scheduled for Saturday 25th February 2023.

EducationASUU Strike Update: ASUU Warns Students May Stay Longer At Home by bodvic14(op): 7:58pm On Nov 29, 2018
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that the ongoing strike by its members may be prolonged as no concrete resolution has been reached in the negotiation with the Federal Government.

The union called on parents and students to show understanding over the development so as to save Nigeria’s university system from collapse.

ASUU National President, Biodun Ogunyemi, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday.

NAN reports that university lecturers had on November 5 embarked on a strike, demanding the implementation of the 2009 agreement it entered into with the Federal Government.

The lecturers are also calling for full implementation of the Memorandum of Action (MoA) agreement with the government in 2017; improved working conditions and welfare package; and upgrade of facilities in universities across the country.

According to Mr Ogunyemi, the strike is not to short-change the students, parents and other key stakeholders but to save the country’s university system from collapse.

“We want to call on our students and parents to show understanding with our struggle as we are in this together.

“The whole essence of this struggle is to ensure that our students get worthy and deserving certificates that they will be proud of anywhere they may find themselves in the world.

“The struggle is to ensure too that we save Nigerian universities from going the way our public primary and secondary schools have gone.

“Today, most parents are sending their children and wards to private primary and secondary schools around the country because of the perceived or alleged falling standards.

“We do not want our universities to go the same way because a lot of our parents may not be able to afford the private university fees,’’ he said.

The ASUU boss added that there was an urgent need for both the federal and state governments to reconsider their approach toward the development of universities to avoid an outright collapse in the near future.

“The sad thing now is that the World Bank is giving funds to some private universities to thrive over public universities.

“Unless Nigerians rise to the occasion and join ASUU in putting pressure on both the Federal and state governments to pay adequate attention to our universities, secondary and primary schools, we may be facing a total collapse of our educational sector, ‘’ Mr Ogunyemi said.

He noted that university students might be staying longer at home as no concrete resolution had been reached with the Federal Government so far.

Mr Ogunyemi said that representatives of the union met with the Federal Government on November 26 but that the meeting ended in a deadlock.

“We met on Monday in order to reach an agreement on the key issues we are agitating for but nothing tangible came out of the meeting.

“Rather than come out with firm commitment on what to do about these demands, they were appealing to us to go back to the classrooms while they tackle the issues; and to us they have missed the point.

“We were told that the negotiation will continue on Friday, November 30 but up till now, as we speak, I have not received any notice of meeting to that effect,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the ASUU first met with the federal government on November 15 to deliberate on the issues.

EducationStrike: FG, ASUU To Meet Again Today by bodvic14(op): 5:46am On Nov 26, 2018
The Federal Government is expected to hold another emergency meeting with the Academic Staff Union of Universities on Monday in a bid to end the ongoing strike in public universities.

The last meeting between the two parties took place on November 15. Despite the meeting lasting for six hours, the strike was not called off because no agreement was reached.

Our correspondent learnt on Sunday that today’s meeting would again focus on the issues in the 2017 Memorandum of Action, which the union claimed the Federal Government had neglected.

Public universities lecturers began their strike on November 5, saying the Federal Government had failed to implement the key areas of focus contained in the MoA.

From a copy of the FG/ASUU 2017 agreement obtained by our correspondent, the issues still under contention are the funding of public universities, earned academic allowances, salary shortfalls and pension matters.

The President of ASUU, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, in an interview with our correspondent on Sunday confirmed the union’s meeting with the Federal Government would take place on Monday.

Ogunyemi said, “There is supposed to be a meeting tomorrow evening (Monday). It all depends on the way government approaches it. If they invite us further, we will go. It also depends on what they put on the table. We met them briefly and we agreed to meet on Monday (today).

“We met with the Minster of Education (Adamu Adamu) on Thursday and it was a short meeting. We have given them our terms. I am not representing myself but those who have given us a clear mandate and we shall abide by the terms.”

The Federal Government’s delegation led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, in their meeting with ASUU leaders on November 15 appealed to the union to consider the interest of the students and end the strike.

EducationNgige’s Medical Trip Stalls ASUU, FG Negotiation by bodvic14(op): 3:40pm On Nov 22, 2018
The permission by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige to travel abroad for medical treatment may have stalled the negotiation between the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government today.
It was gathered the rescheduled meeting between the union and federal government for today may not hold due to the permission sought by the convener and Labour Minister, Dr Chris Ngige who reportedly told the meeting of his scheduled medical trip abroad.
Meanwhile, President, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Biodun Ogunyemi has stated that no issue contained in the union’s demands has been resolved.
He urged members to disregard the usual propaganda that the strike is politically motivated.
This position was contained in the Strike Bulletin 3 issued and signed by ASUU president.
Ogunyemi therefore asked members of the union to remain resolute with the strike.
