It definitely is easier to find Christianity, one of the most unserious and joke-like forms of religion, where HYPOCRISY, LIES, and IMMORTALITY are readily tolerated and even defended. You rarely see the same people embracing Islam, Buddhism, or other religions they consider “too strict” about moral conduct.

In Christianity, you can openly identify as gay or lesbian and still be elevated to positions such as pastor or bishop. You can even establish your own church and continue living in what their own scriptures supposedly condemn, while everyone is expected to applaud it as “acceptance.”

The same people making that argument would suddenly develop a very strong memory if they were asked to hire a convicted serial child grapist as a babysitter for their children. Even if he claimed to have repented, they would not suddenly say, “His past is his past.”

They understand consequences perfectly well when their own safety, money, or children are involved.

So why does “the past is the past” suddenly become the standard when defending conduct they personally want to excuse?

Moral consistency matters. If you believe repentance changes a person's standing, then apply that principle consistently. If you believe past conduct matters when assessing trustworthiness, then apply that principle consistently too.

You cannot selectively suspend your standards whenever they become inconvenient and then pretend that is morality.
