Before we can best tackle the block when it happens, you need to do a check up. It is what we call knowing the causative agent of the problem. Ask yourself some of these salient questions. - Why am I writing? - How has my personal life intruded into my writing space? http://www.bukrepublik.com/blog/2016/10/08/how-best-to-tackle-a-writers-block/ http://www.bukrepublik.com/blog/2016/10/08/how-best-to-tackle-a-writers-block/ |
Monday. The sun is up, family house morning devotion over, breakfast served, your NYSC ensemble – khaki trouser, crested vest, white canvass, roped ID card, thick green belt and smooth simple makeup giving you smart soldierly look, you set off. You have made up your mind during the weekend. You will meet the school management and deliberate with them. Dialogue and deliberation the first strategy in conflict resolution. With the already familiar knowledge of the route, the Okada stopped you at your PPA in less than thirty minutes. School children peeped their heads from the classroom which you realized led into another classroom demarcated by a board. The two room bungalow suddenly developed internal uncompleted rooms which you did not notice on Saturday. One, the rooms, rugged, with chair and table, and learning aid calendars hung on the wall, was open. From the window, you saw a khaki wearer, a colleague. You exchanged pleasantries. Another joined. And the wait for the Headmaster begins. http://www.bukrepublik.com/blog/2016/10/08/ppa-beckons-2/ |

Saturday. It is already a day out of camp. It is still feeling surreal. What is more surreal is the thought of your Primary Place of Assignment. You begin to realize the mistake in your prayer. You asked for the capital, without stating where in the capital. No office; no school. Just Uyo. You got what you asked for. You even got more. The interior regions you thought you escaped from with your Uyo posting suddenly gave you hysterical laugh. Or how else will you explain your PPA and where it is located. A private Nursery and Primary School. Ikot Ekpeyak Ikono. You knew that there is trouble when the drivers of the King of Uyo roads, Keke (yellow tricycles), at Plaza, began an emergency consultancy forum among each other when you asked for direction the next day of your post-camp. In fact, your puzzle began when the old excos a corpers first GPS – of NACC family house in Uyo, your first abode, could not give you a definite direction, all of their efforts ended in ask the Keke drivers at the Keke park in Plaza. Yeepa is a 2014 Nigerian comedy of errors/ comedy of manners by the illustrious Tunde Kelani. In Yeepa, an adaptation of Femi Osofisans book of the eponymous title, he tells of the corruption infested local government agencies and parastatals and how they are almost paralyzed with an initially rumoured but eventually true news of the Public Complaint Commissioners intended and inevitable visit. Rather than attempt to set the records straight and put things in their proper order, the heads of these government agencies and parastatals only try to cover up their mess through corrupt means resulting in their being swindled by the fake and pretended Public Complaints Commissioner and being taken by surprise nay shock by the real Public Complaints Commissioner. http://www.bukrepublik.com/blog/2016/07/09/yeepa-the-movie-a-review-by-mojolaoluwa-o-mofoluwawo/ |
I had planned a small party for my long awaited birthday- a day I eventually started with every Theatre Artists nightmare- an early morning rehearsal! However, rather than complain to fate why it planned it so, I simply leaned on the recently turned fifty two fatherland Nigeria for strength while I basked in the love of the plenty birthday wishes that kept pouring in through calls and text messages. But alas! This euphoria was only short-lived as I found myself watching a viral video of the gruesome lynching of four young men who were just about my age. These young men: Chiadika Biringa, Llyod Toku Mike, Tekena Elkanah and Ugonna Obuzor, were four jolly friends and undergraduate students of the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Reports had it that the quartet had journeyed to a village called Umuokiri in Aluu, Rivers State to demand a payment from a debtor who was owing one of them. But unfortunately for the boys, they were mistaken for thieves by the heartless community members who brutally tortured them and eventually set them ablaze despite the screams of one of the victims sister who tried pleading for her brother and his friends innocence. Further reports stated that the parents of the four boys, on getting to the scene after receiving a distressed call, all broke into a state of hysteria as they were met with burnt corpses of their beloved sons. http://www.bukrepublik.com/blog/2016/10/05/tribute-to-the-aluu-4-this-day-that-year/

Easy is when you have started OBS and NYSC 101 before camping; gathering bits and specks of information flying around from your seniors and older ones. Hard is when the dreaded NYSC gate-search/accreditation elevates you into a white and green headed fowl, a soon to-be khaki Corper graduate. The watchword of NYSC is discipline connoting total obedience to instructions given and having a sense of responsibility towards good behavior without being instructed (the latter being the advanced version of discipline). For the sake of clarity to the issue at hand, kindly refer to the above definition anytime you see the word discipline. The Soldiers instructions are always direct obey, no questions! Also popularly known as operationdo what I say, bloody white fowl! http://www.bukrepublik.com/blog/2016/07/13/warning-htmlspecialchars-charset-utf-7-not-supported-assuming-utf-8-in-homewwwbukrepublikpublic_htmlwp-includesformatting-php-on-line-3317welcome-to-the-culture-shock-of-camp-discipline/

Born with a mental condition known as SCT- Sluggish cognitive tempo to a doting Mother and an uncaring Father who never cared to seek help for their eldest daughter challenged with mental growth and alertness, Atarhe soon learns she is different from everybody, particularly in thoughts and actions – a fact she has to struggle with both at home and amongst her peers in school. Back at home, her Father, often calling her slowpoke, failure, stupid child, dumb head, has another habit of comparing her with her intelligent younger sister, Johwo. At school, she is only popular because she falls in the category of the NFA pupils – an acronym for no future ambition. Finding solace only in scribbling her thoughts in her lettars which she carefully keeps in a bucket under her bed, Atarhe goes about with her fate until her prayer for a new class teacher is answered and she gets a chance to be better and even prove everybody wrong about being a failure and a child of no dreams. http://www.bukrepublik.com/blog/2016/05/07/book-review-ufuoma-bakporhes-lettars-from-an-slowpoke/

I understand like the President would say, I feel your pains that the economic recession is affecting every aspects of our lives. But it is also important and uplifting to know that the only way to come out of every situation is to seek uncommon knowledge. The information needed to be ahead of recession can be gotten from reading books. This Independence, out of your free time, I recommend you find time to read these books. They are very important to Nigeria and its peoples history. In these books, you will learn how to be a better thinker, fighter and leader. EMEKA BY FREDERICK FORSYTH Forsyth’s view of Emeka’s role in the Biafran war is an important read for the Bookrepublican that seeks an unreserved perspective on the Nigerian Civil war. Emeka is the dramatic, powerful and moving life-story of Chukuwuemaka Odumegwu Ojukwu. It tells the story of a rebel, general, head of state, governor and Igbo leader. This book should be read by every Nigerian that wants to know more about the politics and intrigues that came with the 1960s Biafran war. Interestingly, the Buhari led Federal Government has just reincorporated History into Nigerian school curriculum; I will ask that this book be listed as one of the study texts for our secondary school history students. http://www.bukrepublik.com/blog/2016/10/03/five-books-you-must-read-during-this-independence-holiday/ |

Writing Tips: Think Out Of The Box! Since the inception of our publishing arm at Emotion Press, several writers have submitted manuscripts. I have been given the opportunity to evaluate some of them. In this session, I would like to ruminate on one of the major problem literally fighting most writers.Just like Nolly wood where scripting cliches are the order of the day, most writers want to write as Chinua Achebe, Chimamanda Adichie and Wole Soyinka. Thinking out of the box is quite essential as a 21st century writer. Most stories you would be carving has been written before. The difference you would make will be your ability to write your own story your own way. Chimamanda Adichie and Chinua Achebe don't think the same way because they do not come from the same background nor had the same experiences; you and I don't think the same way. We are two original and creatively blessed entities. I am challenging you today to think out of the box. As you put pen on pen, think out of the box. Avoid cliches. Be like yourself. Be original.Create new things. Emotion Press wants to publish a quarterly literary magazine, you are invited to submit your entries. Visit Omojojolobooks./omojojolomagazine. You may have a unique story for publication? We want to publish you - omojojolobooks./submitmanuscript. Catch you. |
