TITLE OF BOOK: On Becoming AUTHOR: Toke Makinwa COUNTRY PUBLISHED: Nigeria PUBLISHER: Kachifo Limited, Nigeria ISBN: 978-978-54604-0-7 YEAR OF PUBLICATION: 2016 NUMBER OF PAGES: 111 BOOK REVIEWER: MofOluwawo O MojolaOluwa Photo Credit: Bella Naija On Becoming is an autobiographical account of the life and times of Toke Makinwa especially as it relates to her love life. Toke Makinwa, the second child of four children was born to Caleb Ifemayowa Makinwa and Modupe Monica Makinwa in the eighties. Born in Lagos to a civil servant and a teacher cum business woman, she moves with her family to Abuja, where her father has been transferred for work and lives there until eight, when a domestic fire accident which claims both her parents lives forces them to relocate, herself and her siblings plus a younger cousin, five children in all, to Lagos, to live with her mothers older sister, simply referred to as big mummy. Orphaned and suddenly uprooted at eight, with a heavy cloak of loss hanging over her and tons of unanswered questions, her life makes a sudden u-turn; turning her into a socially withdrawn and academically backward child. Perhaps the loss of her parents would influence the kind of adult she turns out to be? Perhaps not? In the book, more focus is placed on Tokes relationships. From her very first crush, it appears shes always been into the wrong men. But wrong is a relative term. Her first crush, the church choir leader, is caught kissing another girl at the back of the church, breaking her little heart. In her own words, she fell in love too quickly, even scaring away a few guys with her intensity… Her relationship with her first boyfriend fizzles out after she gains admission into the University. Her academic life sees no improvement as she even almost drops out but for the gracious big mummy, who comes to her rescue last minute. The Ake Arts and Book Festival 2016, which took place from 15th to 19th was an intense five days of information, education and entertainment. I can only share but a few thoughts from eight book chats, thirteen panel discussions, a movie show, festival of short films, tour, interviews and wonderfully packaged daily evening entertainment. Come along When you read the likes of Soyinka, Shoneyin, Helon Habila there’s always a character riding Peugeot in African stories. Eric Maydieu. While giving Peugeot’s goodwill message at the opening/welcome ceremony on Thursday morning, the 17th of November, 2016 . Kicking off with a solo rendition of the National Anthem by Falana, the ceremony had in attendance the Alake of Egbaland , celebrated African writers and representatives of partners and sponsors bringing goodwill messages in turns while the singing group Adunni Nefretiti serenaded the audience with appropriate music interludes, and of course, a rendition from spoken word poet Titi Shonuga What a grand way to set the ball rolling. AkeFest16 was proudly supported, partnered and sponsored by Peugeout, Park Inn, Etisalat, Miles Morland Foundation, FCMB, Coca Cola, Marine Platforms, YorubaName.com, Lafarge amongst others. http://www.bukrepublik.com/blog/2016/12/20/twelve-thoughts-on-ake-festival-2016/ |
Compiled by Folarin Olaniyi 2016 has been packaged with a box full of challenges for businesses; governments, state and local governments have been unable to pay salaries and the prices of both locally and foreign made products have risen astronomically. In the publishing sector, the prices of paper and printing plates have risen by more than fifty percent. Several Nigerian publishers have had to resort to cost cutting measures to stay in business. How then do the publishers break even? How do the authors whose books are one of their major sources of income come out buoyant from this turmoil? Most publishers whose books are printed in India and China have had to patronise the local printers, some have stopped taking orders, and hopeful the situation will become better. It is our hope that the coming year will bring forth the expected ease to the tensed business atmosphere. Notwithstanding the challenges the publishing sector faced in 2016, some publishers have struggled to stick to the vision of their establishments. Five of these publishers have been carefully selected based on their innovative products and services, culturally inclined books and continuous engagement with the virtual community. 5. RASMED PUBLICATIONS, IBADAN The Gbadega Adedapo led Rasmed has evolved from an emerging Dugbe based publishing house to a top player in the international book market, creating highly educative materials available in both the print and electronic medium. Rasmed Publications new website is colourful, highly informative and easy to browse through. Their Facebook fanpage and twitter handle are also updated on a regular basis. I understand Rasmed considers manuscripts for publication on a regular basis. It is important that the companys submissions guidelines be made available on their website, alongside testimonials of some of their authors. I want to also know how the company has been able to contribute to initiatives within their immediate community. This is very important. Publishers must become socially responsible. They must learn to separate a percentage of their yearly profits to support initiatives in their communities, and not only dole out books. Book Title: Eno’s Story Author: Ayodele Olofintuade Publisher: Cassava Republic Reviewer: Buike Onah (@buiketalks) In an era where there are complaints and concerns about the quality of the reading materials for young children and adults, Olofintuade gives us a refreshing dimension to the childrens fiction; a story that blesses both the imagination and the behaviour of the readers. Well illustrated in full colours, Eno’s story is the story of a young girl who faced the society’s view of her as a witch and stood up for herself. When her mother died from giving birth, Eno’s uncle believed that she was the cause of the death and that she is a little witch. The Uncle, Uncle Etim couldn’t understand how the girl was passing her exams even when she missed school severally due to the death of her mother. Another news that her father died in an accident confirmed her Uncle’s fear that she was a witch. READ MORE http://www.bukrepublik.com/blog/2016/11/28/a-review-of-ayodele-olofintuades-enos-story/ |

Oloruntoba-Oju’s fiction, When Lemons Grow On Orange Trees, is a book I had picked up to read out of sheer curiosity and marvel, asides its very simple, yet artistic cover which had initially aroused my interest. Having stumbled on the author’s biography earlier on the internet, I found myself wondering what story such a young mind could tell with a very puzzling and strange title as when lemons grow on orange trees. However, after a quick read of a few pages, I knew I had picked a book worth more than my money, a book worth reviewing even. When Lemons Grow On Orange Trees begins subtly and lightly, that it allows you to switch roles with its omnipresent protagonist and not feel guilty. Then, as it goes on teasingly, indulging you – the reader, to relive memories and even dare new ones, the table is suddenly turned and you’re given two choices: be ready to be part of a new, harrowing world or drop the book and be haunted for the rest of your life! Now, because I’m not one reader to dodge a good read no matter the sufferings to be endured with the players involved, and, since I was not also ready to be haunted by quotidian events – especially from a book, my decision was not hard to make. And soon, as I continued with the book, having settled what needed to be settled, one thing became very clear, Oloruntoba-Oju may truly be young but her story is so strong and wide apart from the usual and unnecessarily compounded cliches that now seemed to be the trend among young Nigerian fiction writers. http://www.bukrepublik.com/blog/2016/10/22/why-oloruntoba-oju-when-lemons-grow-on-orange-trees-will-haunt-you/

From camp, you were worried to your marrows about where you will stay immediately after your camping which is in addition to having no say in your PPA posting. Then you started attending your church camp fellowship; you saw hope as you realized that lots of those in that fellowship came as a result of that fear too. It gave you more reasons to be a better camp churchgoer. The visiting officials of your fellowship assuaged the fear that no matter where you were posted, you must be given a temporary shelter by the LGA council, or the local churches available in that area. But strands of fear were still visible on your head. Fellowship member hunters equally had the idea that their best bait of getting instant new members was via their offer of transitional shelters known as family houses. Some came with flexible conditions you could relate with as it involves church: no wearing of trousers, both sexes not sleeping in the same corner or rooms, visiting hours beyond six was a no-no, payment starts after your first two weeks; others came with an incredible rigid and unfriendly terms like pledging your first allowee to the church, something akin to first fruit pledge, skirts all through, and so on. Your head swiveled when you heard the allowee pledging part and jejely cancelled out those fellowships demanding such. In your mind, not only were they thieves with Bible but highly insensitive. A corper, fresh from the oven of camp, which sucked her up, her only means of sustainability for that transitional time was her first allowee that will quench the frustration and depression for the time being, and some Christian fellowships now come, swooping all of that allowee in one dash, just to be called faithful and faith-believing Christians and be given accommodation, haba! Is that not pure extortion, laced with bible quotes and insensitivity, and indirect payment of family house accommodation that was claimed to be free for the first two weeks? But that is a story for another day. http://www.bukrepublik.com/blog/2016/10/16/life-in-the-family-house/ |
Book: The Tongues of a Shattered S-k-y Publisher: Blackgraphics Book Author: Tosin Gbogi Reviewer: Rasaq Malik Gbolahan Pages: 102 pages ISBN: 978-978-2137-942 First published: 2012 Genre: Poetry JOURNEY TO NAY-TION OF REGAL -GIN Apart from I am memory, a poetry collection by Jumoke Verissimo and Night of My Flight by Akeem Lasisi, Tosin Gbogis The Tongues of a Shattered S-k-y is another magnificent collection that extremely talks on airegin the nay-tion of regal gin, the other way Gbogi re-constructs Nigeria, he alienates her, her life swindling, burning in the charcoal of broken memories of unseen pasts. Tongue of the shattered sky is poignantly written with great diction, each word hammering heavily on pains, agonies, desolate hearts of destitute, mourning a country filled with crying children, miscarriages of pregnancies and how history keeps repeating itself, how the same political truants keep staying at the upper seats and hunger-stricken masses are down waiting for hazy future. What a nay-tion of regal gin, intoxicant that perturbs the brains of our leaders, a nay-tion where bombs are play things, a nay-tion where robbers are friends of the citizen, a nay-tion where policemen are mid-night hunters, gunning down young minds because of money, a nay-tion where lies and truths reach compromise to withdraw the already burnt glories, ashes of loss still spread at the village square, on the streets. The readers can perceive it in Gbogis collection. Divided into four parts, with each title turning obstinate ears to the speeches of looters and sassing the commands of those thieves at the feet of the fallen mountain, Gbogi critically talks about the sociopolitical vices and religious shenaniganism that plagues our regal-gin nay-tion. http://www.bukrepublik.com/blog/2016/10/15/review-the-tongues-of-a-shattered-s-k-y-by-tosin-gbogi/ |
