Nigerian publisher of several award winning authors, Emotion Press has launched an affordable publishing package as a form of palliative against the economic effect of the Coronovirus outbreak to writers of African descent. According to a statement released by the Public Relations unit of the publishing house, ‘the affordable publishing package is the company’s strategy towards subsidizing the cost of publishing for writers of African origin who are at this difficult time economically challenged but still seek the all-important written form of self-expression. We love an original African story and it is our vision to continue to publish our stories across all genres of literature to high acclaim.’

In 2018, Emotion Press published Soji Cole’s Embers, which won that year’s Nigeria Prize for Literature and was also acclaimed by Daily Trust Newspapers and Channels Television as one of the ten best books of the season. Literature / Unsung Heroes: Kola Onadipe, The Author Who Gave Us Sugar Girl. by bookrep: 12:51pm On Aug 22, 2018
A prophet is not without honour except in his own home.

As children, a good number of us spent our leisure reading foreign books. We revelled in Enid Blyton’s imaginary worlds and chorused the moral lessons she taught us through her stories. We travelled to Wonderland and Narnia. We learned, in a foreign language, that we should never stray too far from home so that we would never end up like Hansel and Gretel. These are stories we are yet to forget, and their writers are just as famous as the books. But with the exception of a handful of authors, the indigenous writers who blessed our childhood with beautiful children’s books seem to have been long forgotten, and their stories rarely grace our tongues. One of such writers is Kola Onadipe, the author who gave us ‘Sugar Girl’.

Born Nathaniel Kolawole Onadipe in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun state, Nigeria, he studied Law at the University of London and opened a law firm with his close friend Abraham Adesanya. The author lived most of his life for children. Not only did he write captivating children books, he had fifteen children of his own and was also famous for being a staunch disciplinarian and a principal of Olu-Iwa College (the school with which Ijebu-Ode Secondary Commercial School was merged to become Adeola Odutola College).

What most people do not know is that Kola Onadipe lived from the 14th of July 1922 to the 4th of December 1981. In essence, our beloved Sugar Girl is much older than we thought. Sugar Girl was published in Nairobi in 1964. The lucky ones who read Sugar Girl remember the very first sentence of the book: Her name was Ralia, but people called her sugar girl. We remember that she had a dog, that she was from a poor home, and that her mother was blind. Some of us can still hear her lovely voice which we never actually heard. We remember those steps she took in following that bird, those steps that took her far from home and into the hands of Awaya the witch and then, the hands of the hunter. And we’ll never forget the two most important lessons we learned in that book. First, never get so distracted that you lose your way. Second, if you go to the market, don’t throw stones; it may hit your mother. I was eight years old when I read that book. I have not read it for a second time (I am never really able to read one book twice unless I have to write a book review on it). Yet, I remember details that I usually would not—I will have you know that I don’t remember some of the characters of The Wizard of Oz even though I read both The Wizard of Oz and Who Stole the Wizard of Oz.

Literature / Adventures Of Betty [2] by bookrep: 1:57pm On Aug 21, 2018
Mister Bola calls himself a writer and comes boasting to me how he is a fine writer and has won this award and that. Imagine o! This is a writer that cannot even keep full stops and commas in a committed relationship. But we editors are the ones going to the Golgotha and receiving the tons of pains that could have been avoided if these writers can just take their time and do a neat job.

Ah, but please, let me digress. We’re in Ibadan, a.k.a. the home of Nigerian publishing where some tables must NOT be shaken.

Speaking of tables, so it came to pass that boyfriend visited last week and plenty things happened. Plenty things that started on the table. Hmm. Betty, Betty. Plenty things on the table?! Plenty things like writing abi? LOL. I hear you all, o ye people of God. Let’s just say there are things that often happen at night between two people especially when the breeze is kind and PHCN people decide to read minds from their station. Er, na you sabi wetin you think from here but let me continue my gist.
That particular Thursday morning, everything started on a wrong note. From my waking up to dressing up, it all felt as though my soul had left my body and had gone on an errand for God-knows-what.
The only thing I was grateful for after mumbling my Thank-you-God-for-this-day prayer was my ironed jumpsuit, the dress for the day. Sigh. Even the dress came with its own headache and I wouldn’t have selected it for ironing the previous night had it not been for the damn August cold. Arrgh!
This jumpsuit, a black, long sleeved bodice with its wide pants, could be worn for any occasion from professional to casual. But being the somewhat carefree person that I am, I prefer wearing it especially on casual occasions – and without its sleeves because that is where its beauty lies especially for the glorification of my God-given feminine gifts. But here is the weather foretelling a very cold day which means that I cannot wear my dress without its sleeves to work. (And I’d also be a fool to look forward to a gentleman’s suit!) August should please go already abeg.
‘Joromi Joromi, I want you to love – ‘ my phone snoozed for the first time in the day and sent chills down my spine. That song hasn’t played on my phone for two weeks.
‘Oh God. Can this day ever get any better?! Why does he have to call at this precious time?!’ I cursed under my breath as I watch the phone ring out and tried hard not to be enchanted by Simi’s voice.
‘Joromi Joromi…’ the damn phone rang again and I know boyfriend won’t stop calling until I talk to him. I know the patterns of his tantrums. Calling repeatedly is one way of saying, ‘well girlfriend, since you’re refusing to talk to me, we’ll both die here today’.
Mtcheew. ‘What if I’m not with my phone?’ I had queried him once and he had replied he still won’t stop until the 15th time. 15. That’s his birthday number. March 15. Sigh. Only a child behaves the way he does sometimes, this boyfriend of mine.

Literature / Adventures Of Betty by bookrep: 8:25am On Aug 20, 2018
That afternoon, I remember it was a Tuesday and I had just returned from that yeye bank interview in the Island, when boyfriend buzzed me.

‘Hey babe.’

‘Lover boy..’ I gasped

‘Eeya. Ndo. The bank people wanto kill my baby for me, abi?’

He has this strange sense of humour – it works for me. All the time.

He told me there was this vacant editorial position in Ibadan. I didn’t study English but I know when words are not in their right places. My father is a lover of books, old Warri Lawyer. He loves Shakespeare and Wordsworth and had all of their major books in his library.

Boyfriend sent me the details and the week after, I was in Ibadan for the interview.

After the written exam, about five of us, we were interviewed by a tall dark cute guy, should be in his forties but looked thirty-something.

He asked me several questions from my favourite books to my experience as a book editor. I answered him to the best of my knowledge.

19 days later, I got a call from the Ibadan publishing house to resume as an associate editor. Coming into Ibadan was a new journey and boyfriend asked if I was sure I wanted to leave Lagos for a one-off gig. The way he said one-off gig like as if it was a one night stand. The bar attendant asked if I would take the usual but I ignored him.

After minutes of silence, I picked my bag and walked out of the bar. Abi, what else should I do? Boyfriend never called for weeks, so did I. I sought consolation in my busy schedule at work, learnt how to typeset a book with Adobe In Design and mastered patience when reading the final galley of works going to the press.

‘Who is Uncle Lakin?’ I asked the girls. Both looked at me and returned to their desks as if nothing had been said. As if I was going mad and had the liberty to speak to myself all alone.

It was in the third week of my resumption that I realized why Uncle Lakin was in every girl’s tongue. That morning, I came into office wet and freezing cold. You know one of those strange August rainy days that won’t stop, and the daughter of man has to go to work. Lucky me, my house was just a block away from Kajola junction and I had this cute umbrella that can save the day. I got to the junction and waited for ten minutes before one of those Keke Napep alighted in front of me almost full. By the time I got to University of Ibadan, everywhere was messed up with mud and all sorts. Mehn! I got to the office about 10 minutes late and ran straight to the kitchen to make a cup of hot tea when I saw the tall dark cute looking man that interviewed me weeks ago. For minutes, my tongue was stuck as I continued to stare. Apparently, he was cold as he continued to sip from his cup of tea unaware a daughter of eve was at his back. I immediately turned back to go as I didn’t want him to meet me in this state.

‘Betty, right?’ I heard the voice.

I turned to look at the man all suited up like Prince Harry’s best man.

Literature / Why You Need To Take A Publishing Course by bookrep: 1:47pm On Jul 02, 2018
After you finish the first draft of your novel, the next thing on your mind would be how to get a publisher to have it on their list of fast selling titles. But few writers are aware of the fact that most publishing executives, I mean the book editors, book marketers, reviewers and publicists were once writers who later found their voices in the works of other writers. I will highlight in this article five reasons you need to take a publishing course:

1) You can learn some new tricks

Publishing has so many tricks and intrigues, most especially for those who will be interested in mastering one of its numerous units. For instance, you can make more money selling individual territorial rights with or without your local publisher. How? You need to take a course in rights and contracts. Who knows, the next Laura Bradford might just be you. Most publishers have had to employ the services of a foreign rights agent to handle the complexities of rights sales and permissions.

2) Earn an extra income

Even if you are a University lecturer or fully funded writer, you can make an extra income understanding the business of publishing. Academic publishing is always left in the hands of Publishing Executives, while University Dons complain of low royalty from their works. You might not necessarily start a publishing firm, but understanding the business side of the Academics will afford you more opportunity to optimize your income flow.

You will represent Emotion Press and its imprints as an editorial leader at industry events, on TV and radio, and at our conferences. And — depending on your interest level — you’d be encouraged to maintain a reporting beat during some of your time, or write analysis or opinion pieces.
Requirements:
• At least two years of media, book publishing or journalism experience as a reporter and/or editor.
• A proven track record in book publishing
• The ability to write clean copy and edit to Emotion Press’ style guide.
• Strong attention to detail.
• The ability to work mostly independently, with support and input from editors and colleagues.
• A creative, collaborative spirit; comfort trying new ideas, knowing some won’t work.
• The ability to work from our Ibadan office most days.
• Some evening and weekend work, and some travel.
• Must not be more than 30 years of age

Bonus points for:
• Leadership experience
To apply, please submit a resume, cover letter, samples of your work, and a link to an online presence — blog, podcast, Twitter stream, etc. — that you’re proud of.
